Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Despite the bluesy bark of Travis Tritt's soulful vocals, his artistry lacks the bite of his outlaw heroes. His first album for Columbia (after a decade with Warner Bros.) finds him once again mixing country tradition with rock dynamics. "Livin' on Borrowed Time" sounds enough like Hank Williams Jr. that it could pass as Bocephus Lite, while the title cut recycles every ramblin'-man cliché from the Allman/Skynyrd school. On "Never Get Away from Me," he offers sound-alike homage to Waylon Jennings (and wife Jessi Colter). For all of Tritt's good-ol'-boy bluster, the bittersweet balladry of "Best of Intentions" and the bluegrass uplift of "It's a Great Day to Be Alive" suggest that he's really a softy at heart, and more than an echo of his influences. --Don McLeese

This cd is awesome. Travis Tritt sounds amazing and every track has that down home, soulful vibe we all love about his music.

5 out of 5 stars Travis Tritt turned this rocker to country........2004-12-22

This is the kind of album that makes hard rockers like me start listening to Honky-tonk and liking it. I, like other reviewers enjoyed the "Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde." video. I mentioned it to my friend, who lives country music. I also happened to mention that one of my favorite country songs happens to be "Here's A Quarter Call Someone Who Cares!". She mentioned that it too was from Travis Tritt. She married a guy that looks just like Travis. She told me that the whole album is one of the best country albums she's ever heard.

I think I have to aggree with her. Every song is strong. I think that Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde is one of the greatest country songs I've ever heard.

Down The Road I Go - The reality of a loner that lives on the road not wanting to "Find grass stains on the bottom of my feet!" He talks of how the girl needs to nail him to the ground because be's born to run.

Livin' On Borrowed Time - Living on the edge, no money to do anything, just surviving paycheck to paycheck.

Best of Intentions - A great balad love song. Tells of how a woman loves him even though he can't "build you a castle". No matter how bad things get, or how badly he does, he's always had the best of intentions. Great hit. Great sound.

It's a Great Day To Be Alive - Just happy with the way things are and living life for what it is.

Love Of A Woman - How the love of a woman is the best thing for a man. How women know them better then they know themselves. How no matter how hard, or wild they are their women are in control.

Never get away from me - Not letting go of the woman that you love. Despite rejection from family. How love can cross barriers and bridge disputes.

Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde - Story of a guy who gets a heck of a lot more then he bargained for picking up a red-headed knock-out. She robs stores, and lands him in trouble. Classic. Billy Bob Thorton stars in this. Travis plays the tow truck driver who shakes his head at the guy for what happened. Classic. Great video.

I wish I was wrong - Wishing that he's seen the truth before it ran him over like a truck. Love is blind and not realizing it.

If The Fall Don't Kill You - Several stories of infidelity. How true love can be distarous is you are not careful.

Just Too Tired To Fight It - Finding the end of loves road and just not really wanting to fight it. Tired of fighting the memories of a love lost and gone.

Southbound Train - The final track is the fastest. It's written with Charlie Daniels and it shows. It's the story of a woman who leaves Bangor Maine for the sun and heat of the south and her new life. Her family didn't want it but she left anyway. She's a "knockdown queenie in a bakini". She drives the guys crazy. Her new life was started by the clickity clack of the southbound train.

This is the type of album that hard rockers can listen to and start to enjoy country. This isn't Haggard, Jennings, or Nelson. He's very successfully put a very hard edge to country and bridged a gap that was popularized by Charlie Daniels.

I recommend this album to any rock fan that wants to broaden their horizons and branch out into country.

5 out of 5 stars Tritt is terrific!.......2004-06-23

Travis Tritt's 2000 album, DOWN THE ROAD I GO, spawned several hits: "Modern Day Bonny and Clyde," about a pair of outlaws (the video featured Billy Bob Thornton); "It's a Great Day to Be Alive," about a former outlaw who looks back on his ruff n rowdy past with a smile; "Love of a Woman," a stand-by-your-man anthem about how men cannot live without their women; and the best of all, Tritt's own "Best of Intentions," about a man who's sorry for not fullfilling his dreams.

But there are other gems on here, such as the rowdy title track and "Livin On Borrowed Time." You've also got "Never Get Away From Me," a simple but enjoyable tribute to Waylon and Jessi. Or "I Wish I Was Wrong," which tests Tritt's superb vocals. The final track, "Southbound Train," is a romping tune of a woman heading to Florida to kick back and cut loose.

DOWN THE ROAD I GO is one of Travis Tritt's best efforts. Though his songwriting doesn't get as much credit on this album as in past records, it is still there--marking Tritt as one of contemporary country's best singer/songwriters. With a powerhouse voice and undeniable outlaw status, Travis Tritt is a legend in the making.

THIS IS ONE OF TRAVIS TRITTS' BEST ALBUMS, EVERY SONG IS WELL DONE. AFTER TWO YEARS OUT OF THE SPOTLIGHT THIS FORMER AWARD WINNING ARTIST PUT ALL 4 OF THE SINGLES OFF DOWN THE ROAD I GO IN THE TOP 5 BILLBOARD COUNTRY CHARTS."MODERN DAY BONNIE AND CLYDE" AND "ITS A GREAT DAY TO BE ALIVE" ARE THE STANDOUT CUTS,AND IF YOU LIKE BALLADS THE #1 HIT "BEST OF INTENTIONS" IS A MUST HEAR.I GIVE THIS ALBUM FIVE STARS.

4 out of 5 stars Travis Tritt - Down The Road I Go.......2003-05-14

Travis is back on form ! After a couple of mediocre albums, he's back with the kind of music he was born to sing.

Modern Day Bonnie And Clyde is a wonderful song about a man meeting a woman at a truck stop, they further along stop at a store that she robs and they both drive away with the money before getting caught at some motel by the police. If you ever see the video, Billy Bob Thornton and Gwyneth Paltrow play the role of the modern day Bonnie and Clyde.

Another great song, It's A Great Day To Be Alive must be a constant crowd-pleaser with Travis singing how he might get himself a new tattoo, take his Harley for a three-day cruise or even grow a fu-man-chu.

The only reason why I do not give this a 5 star rate is because of Best Of Intentions which is okay enough but does not match the delight of the other songs here on this album. Let's just hope he stays in this kind of music on his next albums.

5 out of 5 stars Forgive the cheesy title, but a star is re-born once again........2007-07-09

In 1954, Judy Garland gave the most acclaimed performance of her career as a musical movie star in George Cukor's musical remake of the 1937 straight-up drama A Star Is Born. After its premiere, the film was heavily edited and would not be seen in its near complete form again for nearly thirty years. Judy was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, but lost to Grace Kelly, to the chagrin of many Garland fans to this day, as well as many celebrities of the day. (Groucho Mark famously called it the biggest robbery since Brinks.)

In all that mess, the soundtrack was released by Columbia on vinyl record in mono and has since never been out of print and was a best-seller for years. In 1988, Columbia took the musical numbers and the overture directly from the film's stereo soundtrack (As, sadly, stereo soundtrack masters no longer existed.) and released those onto CD. The sound quality was somewhat horrendous, but digital audio was still in its infancy and not much else could be done.

In 2004, for the film's 50th anniversary, Columbia, Legacy, and Sony Music Soundtrax released this incredible new expanded remastered CD reissue of the film's soundtrack. This is the most complete soundtrack you can find and it's definitely worth upgrading from your 1988 CD release.

This CD contains not only all of the songs, including an extended intro to The Man That Got Away which was shortened in the film as well as the complete intro to Gotta Have Me Go With You, but also contains a near complete release of the instrumental score, which includes whole tracks and parts of tracks that were not used in the film, as well as an alternate vocal take of It's A New World, the deleted When My Sugar Walks Down The Street segment from Born In A Trunk, and a static-y complete version of The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial, which was taken from a worn acetate playback disc - the only complete recording in existence.

The soundtrack is taken from a mixing and matching of several elements, such as acetate playback discs, the original Columbia mono soundtrack album masters, and the film's 4-track stereo soundtrack, among others. This means that the soundtrack goes back and forth from being stereo and mono. However, this does not detract from my listening experience any, and frankly, I can't tell much of a difference. One interesting note is that Gotta Have Me Go With You uses both the film's soundtrack and the mono soundtrack album masters to create a faithful listening experience, from the mono instrumental intro to the song itself, which except for a short portion, is taken from the film's 4-channel soundtrack. (The mono portion of the vocal part was used to edit out some plot-related screams that were present in the 1988 release. This method of retaining the aural integrity of Gotta Have Me Go With You was also used when it was included on the Rhino Records compilation Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits.)

Despite the fact that this soundtrack is taken from several different surviving elements and sadly not from a single set of elements, as Warner Bros. didn't have the foresight to save everything like MGM and Disney did, this is an excellent presentation of this landmark soundtrack. The sound quality for the most part is excellent, and the liner notes are also wonderful. Garland historian John Fricke writes a small essay on the production of the film and an annotated guide to the soundtrack, which gives a synopsis of the plot and also indicates where the tracks from the CD appear in the film. Producer Didier C. Deutsch also writes a small essay on the creation of this CD release, giving notes on the elements and some specific tracks.

Amazon is offering this soundtrack at an excellent price, and I have to say, it's a bargain for a soundtrack of this caliber and sound quality. Any Garland fan or movie soundtrack fan should have this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Star Is Born Soundtrack Review.......2007-01-10

A really excellent soundtrack to go with an excellent movie. This is some of Judy Garland's best material in both music and acting. The power of her voice on "The Man That Got Away" is amazing. "Born In A Trunk", "It's A New World", "Someone At Last" and "Lose That Long Face" are other recommended tracks. This is a MUST HAVE for all you Judy Garland fans.

5 out of 5 stars Judy at her peak!.......2006-05-30

Judy Garland's finest film work was "A Star Is Born." Because she and her husband, Sid Luft, were also the producers, it was the most intensely involving production she had ever undertaken. The laser focus of her brilliant talent was never before realized on film to this degree. Also, she had gained tremendous personal confidence due to the unprecedented audience response to the concerts she had done between her MGM films and ASIB. The love with which the live audience embraced her, brought new heights to her acting as well.
The production values of the film were top of the line and it shows on this fine CD. It's a chance to experience Judy's talent on a more intimate basis without the visuals.
A must-have for every serious Garland collector.

5 out of 5 stars a "Star" shines like never before..........2005-04-27

This reissued remaster of A STAR IS BORN is a must-own for fans of the movie, and in particular those who were somewhat dissatified by the previous CD edition (CK 44389). That edition was great for offering us most of the main numbers in stereo/mono mix but was marred by poor analogue distortion and other remastering problems (though this was the best that could have been done at the time). This new edition (CK 65965) presents the entire score, including background and incidental sections as well as the cut material, in a sparkling new package.

The big bonus for getting this latest edition is for Garland's complete rendition of "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial" (without the dialogue of James Mason). This has been taken from a rare acetate master, so while the sound quality is not the best, having the number complete without interrupting dialogue is a more than ample compensation. You will notice too that "Lose That Long Face" has been newly mastered from a better stereo source (cutting out the thunder-crashes that were heard on the first CD master, and Garland's singing no longer has those violent analogue fluctuations during the introduction). "Gotta Have Me Go with You" is now presented without the screams and noises, in a new master from the mono soundtrack.

"When My Baby Walks Down the Street", a section cut from the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, has been added as a bonus track. This sparkling-new STAR IS BORN reissue is a great tribute to what is most definitely Judy Garland's greatest hour on film.

5 out of 5 stars Musical perfection of the highest magnitude!!!.......2005-02-25

Was there ever a more perfect voice than the one possessed by Judy Garland? Powerful yet gentle. Dynamic yet restrained. Bone-chilling yet soothing. She had the pipes!

And her instrument was showcased at its best in the music from her triumphant "A Star is Born".

This expanded version is a bona-fide treasure with the highlight being Garland's earth-shattering "The Man That Got Away," presented with vocals and several instrumental versions. Along with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Trolley Song", "The Man That Got Away" is an essential for Garland fans, as well as those that know a good song when they hear it.

The fifteen-minute medley that was featured in the film as the "introduction" of "Vicki" to the public is another outstanding track, featuring "Born in a Trunk", "Suwanee," and "My Melancholy Baby," all exquisitely performed by the legendary talent.

Clocking in at just under eighty minutes, the soundtrack to the classic film is, indeed, in a class by itself, and deserving of repeated listening, maintaining its "freshness" after more than five decades.

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2007-05-16

One of the great singer-songwriter albums, with a much cleaner sound than on JW's debut (produced by Robbie Robertson) and a determined, against-the-odds optimism (as the title suggests). Some of the lyrics go over the edge into cute (the business about tickling the world's belly button), but not many. Jesse's voice is lovely. Note that Amazon's song list here leaves off the concluding song, All of Your Stories, which is definitely one of JW's most beautiful. And that's saying a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Lyrics.......2006-10-01

The first five songs here have some of the most haunting and simple and spirited lyrics written. Music has great melodies, but the lyrics are special. First got this one in 1972. "if the wheel is fixed, I will still take the chance... when you're skating on thin ice, then you might as well dance."

Like Joe Ely, Lucinda Williams, and Dave Alvin, the BoDeans suffer in the peculiar purgatory of being loved by critics and fellow musicians and pretty much ignored by the public at large. Neither side of that equation is likely to change with Go Slow Down, an album whose rocking hooks and soulful singing are likely to make music insiders salivate with pleasure and whose old-fashioned, homemade rock and roll sound is likely to leave radio and MTV cold. This is an album so good that it justifies the critics' constant comparisons of the BoDeans to Creedence and the Band, but this is not a friendly market for Creedence and Band reincarnations. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a band which doesn't limit itself to the simple IV chords that seem so popular nowdays.......2005-06-28

This is brilliant stuff! Each song is superb! This band really is great and has a different style from anything ive ever heard before. The greatest thing about the music is how "blended" it sounds. There is nothing i can think of criticising (sp?). One thing you should know, however is that the song The Other Side is quite disturbing (it talks about commiting suicide), although the instrumentation is still very good.

3 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you're expecting 10 more like "Closer to Free".......2005-04-22

I am a BoDeans fan. I own OUTSIDE LOOKING IN,HOME, and LOVEANDHOPEANDSEXANDDREAMS.

This one I inherited by marriage, presumably because my wife bought it for the "Party of Five" theme song ("Closer to Free") that opens the disc. That track is a marvelous screaming blast of modern rock and roll...and sounds completely unlike ANYTHING else on this disc. By far, the BoDeans more common sound is a more laidback rock and roll that's dipped in country so if that's not your cup of tea this album probably isn't either.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Closer to Free" is by far the most immediate tune in here. When rock crits talk about "3 minute ditties", this is EXACTLY what they mean. Fun, raucous, and loud..everything rock and roll should be. A lovely intro gives way to the celebration of the road in "Texas Ride Song" while "Go Slow Down" is a grinding bluesy celebration of languid lovemaking. "Something's Telling Me" finds the singer sensing his love affair about to end but still hopeful ("Something's telling me that there's gotta be more than this/There's gotta be more to the whole d**n thing than just a hug and a kiss/Someday I'm gonna find it/then I'll really know/But if you're gonna leave, then I think you'd better go") The disc wraps up with a lovely hidden track (#12), the low-key charmer "She's So Fine" which has a beautiful accordion part.

LOWS:
"The Other Side" is a celebration of suicide as some sort of mystical passage to a better plane of existence. It's downright creepy. "Freedom" strives for significance (written after Nelson Mandela's release from prison) but just seems tepid.

BOTTOM LINE:
Definitely listen to the samples first if you only know "Closer to Free". It's false advertising for the band. If you still really only want "Closer..", you may be better off with the show soundtrack which also includes great songs from Shawn Colvin, Chaka Khan, and Nancy Griffith.

If you enjoy music by the Jayhawks, Lucinda Williams, or Whiskeytown, you may enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold Nugget Buried in a Pop Landscape.......2005-03-29

I realize I've come around to being a Bodeans fan late in the game, but bear with me. I'm slow but I do learn.

I used to live in Sonoma County in California. There's a funky little radio station there called The Krush that plays whatever they please, pretty much. I first caught the Bodeans on that station and did what I usually do when I first sample a new group -- I bought a 'best of' album called "Slash and Burn". My favorite cut on that album is "Fadeaway". It's one of my favorite songs to play when I'm heading out on a road trip.

I bought "Go Slow Down" at a used CD store without hearing any of the cuts beforehand. I love it. What finally turned me into a major fan was the way they seem to be able to veer between genres such as heavy blues, country, zydeco and light pop.

I really dislike being hammered by the same sound time after time on every album cut. Even too much of a good thing wears me out, so I like it when a band plays with my mood by altering the sound.

The Bodeans are a real treasure. If all you ever listen to are Top of the Pops sorts of radio stations, you'll probably never hear these guys and you're probably not the sort of person who could appreciate them. On the other hand, if your favorite thing is discovering a nugget of pure gold buried in the pop landscape, get a Bodeans album.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2001-01-28

In a just world, these guys would be all over the radio and MTV. Of course, nowadays, the really *good* music is NOT to be had in those places. You have to dig deeper!

Well, if you're on this page, you have dug deep enough to find the BoDeans, one of the best unsung bands around. "Go Slow Down," while not their best work (I still think that "Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams" retains that title), is nonetheless resplendent with very-good-to-stellar songwriting and clean, tight playing.

The best songs on the album, in my opinion, are the first five. After that, a slight bit of steam is lost, with the exception of "Stay On." But the entire album is still eminently enjoyable, and it is an especially great "driving album." (To quote Texas Ride Song: "Let's go, shall we/On through the Majesty." Great road trip music!

I also want to say that "In Trow" is one of the neatest little instrumental pieces I have ever heard, and I wish it was longer than it is.

Despite some songs that don't quite measure up to the first five, there is enough great homegrown, guitar-driven rock and roll and uplifting harmonies to justify this purchase and then some.

4 out of 5 stars Infectious and Energizing.......2001-01-03

Like many listeners, I first encountered the BoDeans courtesy of the Fox show "Party of Five," as that show took "Closer to Free" as its theme. I borrowed the CD from the library, and have since purchased my own copy.

The BoDeans don't try to reinvent the wheel or to (purposefully) blaze new trails musically. They simply play and sing their hearts out, and it shows. I would liken this to a great bar band, and I mean that in the best sense of the phrase: a band in touch with everyday people, their longings, and their need to clap and sing along with great music. Many of the songs are laced with a bittersweet taste, but that makes them only that much more enjoyable, as life is like that as well.

The first four songs alone make the CD worth purchasing -- I dare you to listen to them and not dance in the car or in your living room as they play. You'll be strumming that air guitar and swaying in place before you realize it.

"Closer to Free" is basic and fun, and begs to be blared at high volumes. The next two songs, "Save a Little" and "Texas Ride Song" compel you clap and sing along, as well as grab the lyrics sheet so you know the words next time you listen to them. The Bodeans show their ability to take guitars and drums and construct amazingly infections pieces here. "Go Slow Down" is a slow, intense piece about a couple's physical closeness.

It's after these four songs that the CD lags a bit, but "Stay On" and "Feed the Fire" help pick up the pace and your attention.

If you like catchy, guitar-driven rock with heartfelt lyrics and rhythms, this album is a must-have.

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30

If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11

I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.

5 out of 5 stars Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20

Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

5 out of 5 stars Sinister, strong, dark and wierd.......2005-12-20

Jesus Lizard are simply not as others. David Yow's lyrics and vocal delivery are like listening to the paranoid ramblings of a deeply twisted, and sensitive person broken by this absurd, violent, yet humorous world. Like some kind of punk rock Charles Bukowski, he deals in psychic pain and character observation (or confusion) unlike few others. He doesn't wallow in self-serving despair, rather his angst and anger is primarily directed outward in a kind of celebration of the absurd. His screams and pained vocal delivery provide a huge contrast to the surgically precise, yet no less disturbed math-metal-punk of guitarist Duane Denison, drummer Mac McNeilly, and uber bassist David Wm. Sims. They proceed like some kind of unending bad dream that you don't want to wake up from, that you can't wake up from. Relentless and abrasive and dark, yet not without humor, Jesus Lizard's Down is a unique listen from one of the odder and truly alternative bands of the '90s. Also recommended: Head/Pure (their first EP and album in one CD), Liar, Goat, and Shot.

Some lyrics from "Din":

Get me up from this terrible place
Because it's dangerous down here
There are splinters and splinters
Flying like arrows around
I turn around to see one huge black tongue
That means to lick my very being
And the sun is about to set
On the head of my shadow
so get me the hell out of here
so get me the hell out of here

5 out of 5 stars waiting for the reunion tour.......2005-11-02

This is the best Jesus Lizard album, with its unique arrangements and stellar songwriting.
Or is it "Liar," with it's amped-up crunchiness?
Now that you mention it, "Goat" is pretty essential.
The singles/rarities collection "Bang" is also hard to beat.
"Head/Pure" might be more difficult to access until you're into them, but then you get even more of their best songs.
Heck, even "Shot" (despite being the "major label sellout post-Albini album") is most assuredly rocking.

5 out of 5 stars Down for me is Up.......2003-03-02

This album is probably my favorite JL album, even compared to Liar.
It's just crushing, and bass lines (like on 50 cents) just don't come around often enough. While i am glad to see bands such as the Dennison Kimbel Trio rise from the ashes, the Jesus lizard are just so seminal, and i think this album really captures why.

4 out of 5 stars Another jesus lizard CD,similiar to the rest, but still good.......2002-11-24

As the sonic maelstrom of "Fly on the Wall" is let loose, the understatement of the linear notes becomes painfully obvious. Jesus Lizard's deft musicianship, pummeling rhythms, and passionate howling vocals seem almost otherworldly in their intensity triggering a brutal assault on all fronts. To call "Down" simply an abrasive album wouldn't be giving it enough credit. This CD does not merely repel the senses like so many other "abrasive" recordings but instead launches a full-scale attack that continues at an unrelenting pace from beginning till end. Proving to be the true embodiment of noise rock itself, the individual member's talents easily rival those of legendary noise veterans. Recalling the heyday of Detroit's 1969 proto-punk acts, Dennison's riffs are as heavy as Wayne Kramer and as sloppy as Ron Asheton while David Yow's manic unintelligible rants are easily worthy of Iggy Pop himself. Holding down the bottom end, as always, is Jesus Lizard's first rate rhythm section with Mac McNeilly and David Wm. Sims literally beating every ounce of life out of their instruments. The band's veins course with aggression and power and with the help of Steve Albini's equally confrontational production work, Down proves to be a quite satisfying documentation of the band's raw energy. The only drawback to this CD would be that, although Jesus Lizard's sound is definitely as unique as it is massive, the actual songs tend to be very similar. In the grand scheme though, the repetitiveness of the individual songs tends to not really matter when coupled with the consistently striking overall sound and Down still remains a fairly strong effort. Although perhaps not as memorable as Liar or as innovative as the Head/Pure Eps, Down is another strong Jesus Lizard album, even if it is a largely repetative affair.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not their best.......2002-02-10

"Head" and "Liar" are tied for first regarding Jesus Lizard recordings. You cant really go wrong getting any of them, so whatever your mega cd store can carry, fear not and buy it. This one will put an odd look on the faces of old Lizard fans, though. Its very slick, methodical, and muted somewhat. "Misletoe" is a ragged, jangled rant that ranks with their best, heaven knows what its about, but who really cares when its up loud? "Countless Backs of Sad Losers". from what I can tell, is either David Yow's attempt at a political statement, or about the way things are because of the travails of ruthless alpha males, or maybe Im just an idiot and should refrain from interpretation, especially of someone who is as obtuse and cryptic as Yow is. "50c" is what David Yow would pay your mother to screw the band...those are my favorites, the cd drags a bit at the end, but all in all, this is good money spent if you cant get any of the early ones.

Just a year after their smash breakthrough debut album--itself still riding high in the charts--the Irish Tenors have added another delightfully varied collection to their discography. Live in Belfast again showcases the group's obvious concert charisma from a performance given in February 2000. It's a generous smorgasbord of medleys, traditional numbers, and songs from popular sources (including "Scorn Not His Simplicity," which Sinead O'Connor has interpreted)--mixing nostalgic sentimentality with selections of bittersweet melancholy. Binding the whole together is the unmistakable stylish charm of the Irish Tenors, whether singing in solos or in ensembles. But the biggest surprise for fans already hooked on the Tenors is the introduction of Finbar Wright as replacement for original member John McDermott. Wright's bright, romantic voice easily wins over a potentially skeptical crowd--especially in the dreamy "Isle of Innisfree"--and blends nicely with his colleagues. (McDermott, who had to bow out of the performance due to the death of his mother, makes a surprise appearance to solo in a memorable and touching "The Last Rose of Summer"--given as a tribute to his parents--and to rejoin the Tenors for "Red Is the Rose.") The arrangements by Tenors producer Frank McNamara are played with zest by the Orchestra Warsaw Sinfonia. --Tom May

5 out of 5 stars Great Music and Outstanding Voices.......2007-03-28

My wife and I saw these tenors live and on stage and we were truly impressed. Their voices blend beautifully and they present a well rounded variety of songs. We so enjoyed the first CD that we bought this current one.

5 out of 5 stars Time for a new one.......2001-10-19

I bought this CD, (plus the video) in July 2000 and listened to it so much I think it must be just about worn out.!!!The video I have seen so often I bet I have seen every idiosyncrasy of each of them. The Tenors are almost my total pastime. About 12 hours a day, listening and viewing. I "met" them July 22/00 and have been to four concerts, and I'm still impressed by the joyous sounds of their voices.
It's been a lomg time since I wrote my last review of this CD, but I hope I have helped to encourage others to enjoy the thrill of the most magnificent voices of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, wonderful voices.......2001-05-31

I do not claim to be a musical expert. It has always been my contention that music which makes the listener feel good, which raises the spirits and makes the heart glad, is worthy of being heard. Such is this CD. I don't listen to it to search for flaws, flubs, failings and screw-ups. I listen to it because it makes me happy. I am of Irish ancestry, and this wonderful music stirs a core deep within my soul. I got to hear some traditional Irish folk music I'd never heard before. I would hope that all those who listen to this CD would choose to enumerate its merits based on the fact that this music is meant to lighten the soul. It never was meant to be held up to intense scrutiny, because it is folk music. These are the songs the people sang. They weren't meant to be grand, classical opera, and should not be regarded or critiqued as such. They are beautiful and moving, just as they stand, and I am grateful that God gave these four men such voices to sing these old tunes and to preserve them for the generations to come. God knows we need positive, beautiful music now more than ever.

4 out of 5 stars Professional on professionals.......2001-05-05

I am taking from the best in the world. I have met Pavarotti's teachers (Joan Doanerman and Joan Sutherland) and also take from them. I am very well-known in musical analyzing and teaching. I have read all reviews, and personally, many of you need to learn much more about proper vocal technique to be a critic. The voice must flow, with support (breath), low larynx, etc. All four tenors possess the proper singing qualities. However, stage presence, song interpretation, and musicianship also take into affect. Finbar Wright needs to continue his musicianship. He possesses much more romanticism than he shows. Also, anyone can say words like "texturing, spellbinding and dominance," and sound like a knowledgeable critic. However, these words are thrown into sports review as well. Face it folks, know what you are saying. John McDermott has a beautiful voice, but it is a much different classical style than many people know. John is a Celtic Tenor, which means that his under- and overtones will sound much different than the other three. The symphony is NOT too dominant, David Schierholz. If you have worked with the Met recording studios, than you can talk with me, because I have sat in on them. These are live performances, not takes in a studio. Folks, I am a born and bred Irishman. These men are great, but there needs to be more of there individual literature available. I would love to find Anthony Kearns classical recordings. Then, when you have studied and understand the nature of the voice and theatre, then you can write your reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Tenners for Tenors.......2001-02-16

This cd and video was my introduction to the wonderful "Irish Tenors". Seperately each is spellbinding. Together they are nothing short of magical. Finbar Wright is a dashingly romantic figure while Ronan Tynan is most compelling. Anthony Kearns will be a major star someday in the opera world. His voice is clear and strong. Wright's voice soars in songs such as "Carrickfergus" and "Isle of Innisfree". He seems a bit nervous which is understandable given he had only 10 days to prepare for this concert. He was asked literally days before the performance to step in for John McDermott. Thank goodness he did! The one downer for me was the appearance of John McDermott as his voice is not my cup of tea.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best........2005-03-02

I bought this CD with high hopes. I absolutely loved the first one, the one recorded live. This one was a disappointment though. The guys songs are good and their voices are in good form but it was missing something...feeling, I guess. The live concert version can make me cry and laugh it's so sung with feeling, but this is just singing. I just felt it lacked feeling. I guess that's why I was disappointed with it.

5 out of 5 stars What a magnificent Heritage.......2005-01-22

I highly recommend this album to all fans of Irish music. This is the last album with Ronan as a memember and it is one of their best. Ronan's "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen" is wonderful, so too is Finbarr's "South of the Border". The theme from the Titanic "My Heart Will Go On" is the best version since Celine Dione's. My favorite track is Anthony's "The West's Awake" . One point to note is that this group is one of the few out there who can perform live with an equally good recorded sound. Having listened to them at Meadowbrook NH the night of Ronan's farewell I can assure you that live or recorded they have a fantastic sound. I highly recommend this CD to all fans of Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars A Review .......2004-10-30

I have never really been a fan of Traditional Irish Music and had never even HEARD of the Irish Tenors....That is until a friend of mine introduced me to the recording of "Live In Belfast" Instantly, I was hooked. I have become addicted to a lot of these songs. Especially the goofier ones they sing. like "Phil the Fluther" and "Courtin in the Kitchen" When Heritage was released I was estatic....As I had loved all the songs they had released before. Even though they recycled some of their songs. I loved the way they re recorded "Red Is The Rose" with Finbar in place of John and also "Fields Of Athenry" I Found this version to be better than the other one. I found it really bizare that they would sing "My Heart Will Go On" as that is not an Irish Song...Ireland was where the Titanic sank. but still. I really enjoyed listening to it. "South of the Boarder" and "Golden Jubilee" along with "Little Brigid Flynn" were quite entertainingly cute. I really enjoyed Anthony's "The West's Awake" and "The Parting Glass" and "The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls" I would, too also love to see Anthony put out a solo album.

5 out of 5 stars Heritage, The Irish Tenors.......2004-09-30

This is another delightful effort by Anthony, Finbar and Ronan.
My favorite songs were "Off to Philadephia" (Anthony) and "My Heart Will Go On" (Finbar). I didn't even mind the repetition of some songs heard on past CDs - but wondered about it, until I learned of the departure of Ronan Tynan. I am curious to see the kind of arrangements they have included on their new CD, due to come out later this year, which they made upon the return of John McDermott. John is a Canadian of Celtic descent, whose voice, though pleasant in a folksy way, does not seem to blend as well with Anthony and Finbar as did Ronan's trained vocals. I would be very pleased to see Anthony make a solo CD, including such ballads as (my all-time favorite) Bantry Bay and some of the wonderfully playful Irish ditties he sometimes performs at his solo concerts.

3 out of 5 stars Tattered Tenors.......2004-08-20

When the Irish Tenors burst upon the public scene not too many years ago, they were heralded as a refreshing change in the sea of musical mediocrity. The original trio of McDermott, Kearns and Tynan thrilled us with their exuberance and vocal virtuosity and frankly, I miss that. (Please note: since I originally wrote this review the threesome has changed to McDermott, Kearns and Wright with Tynan having left the group).

As one of their latest efforts, "Heritage" is an "okay" album, but it certainly lacks the freshness and fun of the Irish Tenors' earlier efforts. Of course, there are notable exceptions such as Kearns' roguish "Off to Philadelphia", the sprightly "Golden Jubilee" and the beautiful "The West's Awake" solo by Kearns. Wright's "Little Brigid Flynn" is downright fun but his "South of the Border" is oddly out of place. With too many recycled songs and a little too little Anthony Kearns, I personally found "Heritage" to be the weakest effort in the generally stellar Irish Tenors' discography.
