5 out of 5 stars A very interesting album........2007-07-02

First off this album is amazing! The musicianship is amazing, the vox are awesome. This album had me headbangin' from the first few notes to the very last one. Imagine the brutallity of Napalm Death meets the complex song writing of Death meets the technicallity of later works of Suffocation. In short this album is amazing. I don't have any complaints about this either. My favorite songs are Praise The Lord (Opium Of The Masses), Destroy the Opposition, Born In Sodom, Epidemic of Hate, and Pissing In The Mainstream.

2 out of 5 stars Idiotic Vocals Ruin A Decent Metal Disc.......2007-05-12

Right out of the gate, I want to point out that I am no neophyte to metal; I first became a metalhead in my early teens during the NWOBHM movement in the early '80s, I play guitar, and I am a huge fan of death-, progressive-, experimental-, metalcore-, math/tech-etc.....whichever sub-sub-genre of metal you throw at me...I fly the devil horns, and it is good. Now I love death metal...until recently I thought it was nearly impossible to ruin the cookie-monster death-metal guttural vocal style. I mean, it probably came into existence when a metal band in the early '80s couldn't find a decent singer. Well my friends, I have heard Dying Fetus, and now I know that it is possible.

Decent (and very heavy) metal riffs and classic death-metal blastbeats are completely ruined by a vocalist who (and I'm completely serious here) sounds like a nineteen-year old at a kegger trying to burp the ABC's. Literally. It was almost impossible for me to even listen to the rest of the CD due to my snickering and irritation. For examples of this style of vocal done right, see any number of other bands....Death, Decapitated, Gojira, Immolation, Kataklysm. I mean, really......I wanted to give it one star due to excessive annoyance, but the solid riffs and guitar work prevented me.....get a singer, dudes. Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2007-01-16

Yeah, I know, lack of a better title, but better than giving some Rolling Stone like title (you know, fruity).

This band rules, and this is the second catchiest death metal album (first still goes to Effigy Of The Forgotten). This band also is the only band that sounds like nothing else. Here's why:

1.Groove. Death metal has to have some of this, other wise, it sounds like complete _____. That's why I hate most metalcore. BEcause it's boring, uses the same damn beats. Most metalcore blows.
Some albums don't have as much, but all metal albums have to have at least a little bit. If it dosen't, it has a much harder time of being something that you can'enjoy for the actual music (okay, there are a few albums that got away with not alot and kick ___, like Obscura).

2.They have a really kick arse style. Grindcore mixed with regular death metal, and it dosen't sound like a Beck song.

3. Lyrics. Yeah, these guys have a name that most lame- half arsed Cannibal Corpse rip-offs, and they had two albums before this that used gore lyrics. But finally, they switched to political and social problems of America. Great to see that some bands aren't trying to make more gore lyrics. CC and others will handle that just fine. So if you want to try a metal band, focus on lyrics that take more thought, or haven't been used. Even if they are about death, you can't use different kinds of death themes (Nile)

That's the main thigns that made a difference to me. And it's awesome to headbang to. If you like death metal, than you should check it out. My only complaint are the vocals, they kind of aren't as good as Suffocation or Cryptopsy (Lord Worm rules).

5 out of 5 stars Ferocious!!.......2007-01-15

I must say that Dying Fetus has to be one of my faves of the Death/Grind genre. Unfortunately, I was one of those people who found out about Dying Fetus when Stop at Nothing was released. Then shortly afterwards I worked my way backwards through their catalog and bought the amazing "Destroy the Opposition" then I purchased "Killing on Adrenaline" and so on. I would reccommend buying any of the older Dying Fetus CD's first before buying "Stop at Nothing" that one kinda sucked. Onto the review, John Gallagher is one of those vocalists who send goosebumps down your spine. The guttural vocals are almost inhuman and sound like they came out of the pits of hell. He is one amazing guitarist and the rest of the band are amazing musicians as well. I believe Chimaira asked for the talent of Kevin Talley to do the drums for the new Chimaira record in the absence of Andols Herrick. Jason Netherton went on to make Misery Index a full time thing after "Destroy the Opposition." But I'm pretty sure you already knew that. Those who do not like death metal are like "Those bands have no talent...blah blah blah" I just give them a big slap in the face and throw on some Dying Fetus, or some Skinless or Guttural Secrete or Deeds of Flesh and then they pretty much shut up. So if you are a fan of EXTREME METAL of the most punishing kind, pick up all of Dying Fetus' albums along with the aforementioned bands as well.

5 out of 5 stars Decimation.......2006-08-27

If you are a fan of the genre then you will love this disc. It is a non stop Brutal Assault on your ears. Now since theses guy's have a habit of changing members on every album it should be interesting to see what the line up will be for 2007' If you want real true Brutal music the kind that you feel inside by this disc an unload on someone. Stay Brutal. HORNS UP!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bartok bonanza.......2000-09-17

If you're looking for a single CD that will introduce you to the treasure-house of Bartok's piano works, you can't do better than this. Szokolay brings each of the 55 short selections here to vivid life, from the simple and understated ones to the harmonically challenging, from the folk rhythms to the austere and meditative mini-masterpieces. The piano sound is just a little thick compared to the best piano recordings, but its very lack of sharpness helps to keep some of the more percussive pieces from sounding too brittle. I enjoy this more with every hearing. Hats off to Naxos for a great buy.

Album Description

"Early Warnings" is a thematic and all-too-relevant collection of songs concerning war, human rights abuses and the spirit required to transcend these dysfunctions that were selected by the pioneering "women's music" and political activist Holly Near from two of her previous albums, "Watch Out! (1984) and "Sky Dances" (1989). Both of those records were originally released on Holly's own much-missed Redwood Records and have been unavailable for the last decade. "Early Warnings" contains nine songs from "Watch Out!" that are making their CD debut here, four songs from "Sky Dances," and the version of "Quiet Early Mornings" that Holly contributed to Appleseed's award-winning 1998 release, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol. 1."

As Holly describes the contents of "Early Warnings," "Most of the songs were written in the 1980s. Reagan was president…Fear-based thinking and fundamentalism were on the rise. There were many early warnings…and the storms just keep on coming."

The song "Watch Out" warns that "there's the rumble of war in the air," pointing a finger at the Reagan administration's militarism. The political "death machine" and the religious right wing are put on notice that "the meek are ready, armed with a loving hand," on "The Meek are Getting Ready." "War of the Flea" is also about the battle between the small and the mighty.

Holly's strong feminist beliefs are the basis of "She," which Holly calls "a mythological song about the rise of women in the face of oppression," "Step It Out Nancy," in which a woman rejects an arranged marriage, and "The Train Song," described by Holly as "the lament of a poor woman who can't seem to get out of her situation of bad times and hard knocks."

Not all of "Early Warning's" songs, many of them Near originals, concern confrontation. "Sky Dances" is a Native American tribute to nature. "Couple of Friends" and "West Virginia Friend" are tranquil meditations on friendship, and "Sun Won't Stop" is about Holly's father. The CD ends on a hymnlike note with "Quiet Early Morning," reminding us "We can still have singing tomorrows."

Holly's warm, unafraid vocals are accompanied by world-renowned instrumentalist John McCutcheon (dulcimer, banjo, guitar), members of the chamber folk ensemble Trapezoid, New Age bassist Michael Manring and longtime Near associate John Bucchino on piano.

5 out of 5 stars Moving, Inspiring, Get Up and Go.......2004-04-29

First I have to admit that I am a fan of Holly's but her music is always on target. Songs written some ten years ago are still relevant although, that doesn't say much for our times. If you are looking for inspiration and hope and at the same time wanting a message to get you up and moving towards change, this is the album for you.
Holly has a very polished voice without sounding like an opera singer. Her words are clear and easy to follow. I like her music because there are many songs I can sing on my own or sing along with. That to me is the true test of a songwriter and singer; if you can carry them along with you in your head or sing along. Too often these days, without a lyric guide, I can't understand even a fourth of the words of a song.
Also, if you are feeling frustrated with our world situation and need some hope, Holly's songs on This album both remind us we must change ourselves and our society and at the same time, give us hope that change is possible. I don't feel so alone when I hear her words. This is not a professional review; just one that says this is one of her best and very much worth buying.

      Amazon.com essential recording

Bartók's Mikrokosmos ("Little World") essentially comprises 153 teaching pieces, divided into six books of progressive difficulty. These works make ideal vehicles for budding piano students who are ready to face the myriad challenges of 20th-century keyboard music. They also reveal the kernels of the Hungarian composer's uncompromising compositional style. György Sándor was a piano pupil of Bartók's, and his fluid, perceptive playing is unfailingly idiomatic, from the simple, canon-like exercises at the start to the demanding Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm that crown the cycle. The mono engineering is thin but acceptable. Suffice it to say that the composer would have been proud of what his pupil achieves here. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars The slender difference that makes the great difference!.......2006-09-29

At the actual moments it's hard to find out that unusual and missed way of play Bartok with these well known dissonant inflections, for all of us who had the immense privilege to watch this legendary pianist twice in Caracas in the seventies and eighties. To this reviewer, it will be absolutely impossible to forget his egregious presence and powering [...], steeled phrasing hovered by that special reverberation and acidic lyricism at the moment to play Out of doors that cold night of December 9, 1982.

Without another intention in mind, but intending to illustrate and motive the newcomer listener, I would say that in just few counted occasions (Richter and Prokoviev, Ravel and Cortot) there has been such chemical rapport between composer and performer.

At least in my case, I have not heard about any other pianist able to sound so sarcastic, reverberating and genuinely Hungarian as Gyorgy Sandor did it.

So I really hope you to keep in mind all these previous considerations at the moment to make this wise choice. Go for this record without any shadow of doubt.

This album is now part of the mythic legend of the treasures for keyboard.

No other pianist will sound so astonishingly as Sandor does.
