Even among rap fans, Heavy D has been considered innocuous. He's a bit reminiscent of Will Smith; any nastiness he exudes is eaten up by his goofy demeanor. The overweight lover is back with more of his bumpin' sex grooves, but is it streetwise? That's a different story. Rap has always prided itself on its edge and even a so-called "novelty" like Eminem has the groove smarts to match his persona. There's something about Heavy D that just doesn't cut deep enough. Q-Tip (of Tribe Called Quest) pops up on a track and the moment he says, "Yo," you ignore the lackluster backing; he commands the mic while D seems to disappear into the mix. There is one track ("You Know") that deserves a listen for its skillfully smooth merging of rap with drum & bass sounds. --Jason Josephes

Like most of their albums it took a few listens for me to fully enjoy it. Now this isnt their best effort but its still good. It just didnt hit as hard as their other albums did. It reminds me of Lullabies just because of the fact that it took awhile for me to get into it. If you have never listened to them then I suggest Songs for the Deaf, Rated R, or their Self-titled before this one. If you have those then Id say buy this.

Different style but still awesome.......2007-07-28

This CD is awesome, as are all QOTSA cds, but definitely different. I can't believe it is getting bad reviews because it is a different style, just give it a chance, it takes a few listens to get used to it, but it gets better with each listen. People apparently just wanted this cd to sound exactly like earlier QOTSA releases, but that's one thing I love about QOTSA, is the fact that all the CDs sound different.

So just give it a chance, listen to it more than one time before you decide you hate it. I love this CD, and if you're a QOTSA fan, you probably will too.

Queens of the Stone Age is nothing if not consistent when it comes to their musical style (their lineup is a different story all together). From the minute that "Era Vulgaris" kicks in, you know what you're in for, and you get it in spades. Incredibly catchy, somewhat gritty quality, and a just plain groovy mood that gets orchestrated throughout the album's eleven tracks. Witness opener "Turnin' on the Screw" which bleeds into rip-roarers like "Sick, Sick, Sick", "Misfit Love", "Make It Wit Chu", "3's & 7's", the instantly memorable and catchy "Suture Up Your Future", and the excellent closer "Run, Pig, Run". There's not really anything here on "Era Vulgaris" that you haven't heard before from Josh Homme and co., but if you're a longtime fan of the band, this isn't a bad thing one bit. As far as providing more than solid and inventive rock, "Era Vulgaris" delivers in all departments, and is yet again another wonderful entry in what is a very impressive and underrated discography. All in all, whether you're a Queens of the Stone Age fan new or old, "Era Vulgaris" won't disappoint.

I've listened to the cd 5 full times and these boys are all over the map.
The biggest thing lacking is the drive on all but one song (sick,sick,sick). The rest is a jumble of misc. garbage. Not worth the price or time and makes lullabies sound like a 5 star album. Maybe the loss of Nick Oliveri is catching up with the band in the song writing department on the second release since his firing.

Don't Like As Much As The Last 2, But Still AWESOME!!!!.......2007-07-29

This band still rules!! Just saw them in San Diego on the first nite of the tour.(July 24, 2007) They played every song on this CD. Great stuff!!
I bought the CD that comes with the Bonus DVD. It has all behind the scenes at the recording of this CD. Pretty cool stuff. Portnoy is funny, with his Ali G impersonations. This is a great CD!! A must for all Dream Theater fans.

A Magnum Opus after 20 years of Prog-Metal.......2007-07-26

I have been following DT since 1994 when I was introduced by a friend who played Images and Words in a car ride home from school. That was 13 years ago and DT remains the only band I simply do not get tired of listening to.

They were formed in 1985 and here we stand in the year 2007 and 10 studio albums later with Systematic Chaos which I think is arguably their finest work to date.

Some of their previous releases took a little time invested listening for the tracks to grow on me. They always did and I always grew to love the music. Systematic Chaos stands out for me as a DT album which I LOVED on first listening. I mean I think I nearly blew the speakers out in my house the first time The Dark Eternal Night started piping through my system.

Some standout tracks on Systematic Chaos:

In the Presence of Enemies - Part 1: First track on the album and a great opener for DT as it has a very progressive feel to it with a complicated riff that they play with in several different forms leading up to James LaBrie cutting into vocals at 5:13. For some reason, 'clean and crisp progressive metal' comes to mind when thinking about this track.

Forsaken - Opens with a creepy sounding piano sequence from Jordan Rudess which would find itself at home in a movie like "The Exorcist" and then explodes with the rest of the band playing a variation of that theme. The lyrics are very creative and spell a story of a person being visited at night by a 'forsaken' who tempts the victim to give themselves up. This song has a more ballad type feel and you are tempted to sing along with this one.

The Dark Eternal Night - If In the Presence of Enemies is clean and crisp, then this song is its antithesis sounding grungy and ballsy. It starts with John Petrucci on a seven string guitar playing a filthy riff. The vocals cut in at 1:11 with LaBrie and Portnoy together distorted and angry. This is a song where your volume knob has a mind of its own and speaker companies may make some money in replacement parts. This wouldn't be out of place on a Megadeth album and I think DT may find some new fans with this tune.

A note on the 5.1 mix on the bonus DVD...this isn't just the music cloned on the surround and center speakers. The music has actually been mixed. You will hear panning and splitting of vocals and instruments. The bonus DVD is well worth having if you are fortunate enough to have a surround system.

The documentary on the DVD is the only thing I wasn't entirely happy with. While it was cool to see how the songs take shape, there were a few things that bothered me. For one, if you watch this with a good sounding subwoofer, be ready to turn it down during the interviews with John Petrucci as they were done in a very windy alley and subwoofers will lovingly reproduce all that wind making the interview almost impossible to sit through. The second thing is a bit nitpicky, but I feel they should have future proofed the documentary a little better by filming it in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Widescreen TVs will be ubiquitous in the near future as prices continue to tumble. It would have been nice not having to watch it in pillar box format on my tv.

Most bands don't last 20 years. If they do, they are tired sounding and probably ready to hang it up. DT is in their prime after 2 decades, and if they continue to make albums like this, the fans will respond with good album sales and sold out shows. I hope to see a 30th anniversary tour in the future.

If you are new to DT I can't think of a better way to start than picking up Systematic Chaos

Unlike the promo songs, In the Presence of Enemies (the split-up epic) is the most memorable, magnificient song I know. Repentance has emotive power of a steam roller. I can't get enough of this album.

Dream Theater is known for their complex, progressive arrangements and strong musicianship. Any band would be happy to have one of these muscians be their hub, but Dream Theater has 5 talents who all excel at their individual instruments. Bringing it all together in one band is truly a feast for the ears. This release may be their best yet. It's a little heavier and a little darker than some of their other releases, and some of their fast, tight riffs have had me pushing the rewind button in disbelief so I could listen again. The DVD covers the recording of each song, some of the thoughts behind those songs, and a little look into their personalities. If this is the only Dream Theater release you buy, I guarantee you'll be going back for more. Highly recommended.

Russel Allen is without a doubt one of the most powerful singers of our times, and Michael Romeo is pure genius in how he has crafted this album and he slays on his guitar! Russell Allen Truly Shines Here.......2007-07-26

It is not hyperbole to declare that 'Paradise Lost' was worth the five-year wait, and nearly a month since I purchased it remains in heavy rotatation on my MP3 player. Few bands have the kind of staying power that allows them to take that amount of time off and still be relevant, or have as loyal a fan base. Then again, Symphony X has always appealed to literary maven in me, from V: The New Mythology Suite, (based on the myth of Atlantis) to The Odyssey (Homer would have loved these guys), and I've adored them not only for making great albums, but for treating the listeners like intelligent human beings.

This is NOT a remake of 'The Odyssey', so don't expect it. 'Paradise Lost' is darker, richer and deeper in tone and texture, including the artwork (which is worth the price alone). From the sweeping 'Oculus Ex Inferni', which opens this grand epic depicting Lucifer's rebellion against God, to the blistering 'Set the World On Fire/The Lie of Lies', to the heartrending Revelation (Divus Ex Pennae Tragoedia), it's cinema of the mind done through music, and what music it is. I do believe that John Milton would indeed be proud.

It seems that most of the reviewers are budding guitar gods, which is why they focus on the almost inhuman stylings of Michael Romeo (and believe me, they ARE simply jaw-dropping--does the guy have extra fingers on his hands?), I'm all about vocals and personally, it's Russell Allen's intense vocals that really stand out here and showcases his incredible range. For some fans, the heaviness Allen uses here may be somewhat disconcerting, but for the overall theme of the album, it's perfect. While we're not talking unintelligible death-metal growls, it is a much darker and harsher sound. However, Russell Allen is the ultimate actor, managing to convey the seductive evil of ultimate power. He's both wicked and alluring as he snarls with fiendish venom: "I will forsake you/destroy and unmake you/with all my might/I will take you down..." His delivery reminds me of Jon Oliva's Mephisto from 'Beethoven's Last Night'. Of course, Allen does go softer on such tracks as `Paradise Lost' (my other favourite) and `Revelation' (I love the ending which incorporated melodic lines from Divine Wings of Tragedy--it's a trope that I've noticed most progressive/power metal bands seem to use).

There's nothing else to say except that I truly LOVE this album and can't wait to see them live. This is American Power Metal at its finest!

This album defines great Rock 'N' Roll music........2007-07-30

In my opinion this album is the greatest Rock 'N' Roll album ever. I strongly recommend you to buy this if your a rock fan, it is a must have. On another note I read some of the 1 star reviews and I urge you to disregard what they have to say for a few reasons. One reason is they put some false facts in their reviews (not all but a few) which clearly shows their lack of knowledge concerning this great rock band. Also I saw some of their other reviews for other cds. They gave 4-5 stars for bands like greenday and I think Beyonce (some crap like that)though their were a few who gave great bands like Metallica 4-5 stars. One more thing is that AC/DC makes great rock music, think about it. Its powerful yet simple and usually about the definitive rock 'N' Roll topics which are women/sex, alcohol, and good times. The songs of Back In Black are great rock songs which many people love, from credible rock/metal musicians to the average person.

Dollars and (common) cents........2007-07-20

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song). Unfortunately, iTunes doesn't carry any AC/DC songs at the moment.
This CD is perfectly priced. 10 great songs for $10. If you don't already own the CD, the popular songs you'll know are Hells Bells, Back In Black and You Shook Me All Night Long. If you like them, then the rest of the songs on this CD won't take long to grow on you. Especially, Let Me Put My Love Into You. I promise that this CD will not disappoint.
This is one of my three favorite Hard Rock/Heavy Metal albums from the early 1980's. The other two are Judas Priest's "Screaming For Vengeance" and Def Leppard's "Pyromania".

Simply put, THIS is rock and roll!.......2007-07-11

I can't really think of anything too specific to say about "Back in Black". One day, I bought the album, listened to it and had one of the biggest musical joyrides I can recall! Critics may despise AC/DC, but that's no reason to neglect this album! In fact, this qualifies not only as being one of the biggest-selling rock albums of all time, but one of the greatest. That being said, "Back in Black" is probably the first album people will think about whenever AC/DC is mentioned, and while they have a great selection in their catalogue, this is, no doubt, their finest hour.
From the guitar crunch of the Young brothers, from Malcolm's rock-solid rhythm playing to Angus's legendary riffs, licks and solos, this no doubt qualifies as a great guitar album. Then comes in the rhythm section of Cliff Williams on bass and Phil Rudd on drums, and while Phil Rudd may not have the same chops as John Bonham, Phil still makes his drums sound larger than life, which makes for a great cornerstone of the AC/DC groove. And then...Brian Johnson. Who would have thought after such a great lead singer as Bon Scott passed away, Brian Johnson would be able to fill in his role, and fill it in greatly, as well. His voice may take some getting used to, but he definitely sounds best on this album.
In addition, the remastering is excellent. The volume is up and there's no static or unneccesary noise that ruins the sound. After all, there's nothing as disappointing as hearing a great song like it was recorded a mile away! Anyway, this album is just flat-out excellent for those who dig such a sound. Ten songs at a little over forty minutes, and a cross between a hard-rock crunch and an old-school groove for each song, AC/DC did just about everything they could right on this album.
As a summary, this album will make you forget your problems, imagine these guys on stage at night in a big, sold-out arena, playing these rockers loudly and proudly, and, of course, prove to be a testament of time and rock and roll. And remember, take no pressure from the critics. Be your own person! Rock out and feel good about it! And remember, "rock and roll ain't noise pollution...it just makes good, good sense!" Peace!

One of the best CDs ever...REMASTERED.......2007-06-27

I owned an original copy of Back in Black and played it constantly. It's an ideal CD for road trips and just incredible rock from beginning to end. I didn't think anything could possibly improve it until I heard the remastered version. Suddenly the bass comes out more, the drums are even more in your face, the vocals are clearer, it just ROCKS even more. There are plenty of bad remasters out there of various classic albums, but thankfully, this is not one of them.

The rebirth of AC/DC .......2007-05-16

Hands down the best AC/DC CD. This is the cream of the crop, and it doesn't get any better than this. To this day, each song rocks loud and hard, and vocalist Brian Johnson was never better. A must for any hard rock collection, your ears will be bleeding.

Listen............I love Manson's decadent, hedonistic, sometimes brutal music. But this.....disappoints. It's very understated, slow moving and has no Kick. No Punch. I will always support his output and listen to his material, but after many, many listenings, this album still bores me and makes me change the selection. Enough said. After taking nearly four years off from making new music; he has returned with "EAT ME, DRINK ME". Eleven powerful rock songs with a purpose. You have slow ballads like "Just A Car Crash Away" and uptempo pieces like "The Red Carpet Grave" and "Are You the Rabbit?". You have classic Manson in "Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery." And finally new Manson in "Putting Holes in Happiness" and "They Said That Hell's Not Hot". An amazing album that needs to be in every rock 'n roll fan's collection.

It grew on me........2007-07-25

As a longtime MM fan, I wasn't overly impressed with this album when I first heard it. I bought it for an eight hour road trip, listened to it for pretty much the whole way, and decided it was ok - not fantastic, not awful. Then, a few days passed without me listening to it and I popped it in the cd player again...and really liked it! I've been listening to it since and enjoying it more and more with each listen. True, it's not MM's best album ever (to me, Mechanical Animals & Golden Age of Grotesque are tied for best MM albums), but it is good and it gets better with each listen.

Oh, I should mention that the lyrics are awful (same old, same old, just less clever/creative and perhaps more tired), but I for one don't listen to MM for the lyrics.

If you are a fan, I think this is worth buying.

By Far His Worst Album.......2007-07-20

I have been a fan of MM since '98 and I have to say that this album is a real let down. Almost every single song has a long guitar solo at almost the exact place every time, and some songs even sound similar to another before it! Out of the entire album, only about two or three songs really stood out as ok, nothing really blew me away.

I'll give him points for his style change, which sounds like a record from the 70s, sadly however, most of the songs are just boring. I have liked all of his past records, Mechanical Animals is what made me a fan, but I just didn't care for "Eat Me, Drink Me" at all. Hopefully, the next CD will be better

The original and definitive heavy metal band, Led Zeppelin made their mark in several other categories with their fourth album. The vocals of Robert Plant, guitar playing of Jimmy Page, and drumming of John Bonham are all the stuff of legend. John Paul Jones brings extra versatility and originality on bass, keyboard AND acoustic guitar. The songs:

Black Dog - blues-influenced (like a lot of earlier Zeppelin), loud and raunchy (in the best kind of way), some over-the-top vocal stylings
Rock And Roll - barn-burning blues and a great vehicle to show off one of the greatest rock drummers ever
The Battle Of Evermore - inventive art rock that proved that these guys were not only great rockers, but great artists as well
Stairway To Heaven - the definitive power ballad
Misty Mountain Hop - more barn-burning blues with monstrously huge guitar sounds and distinctive electric piano riff

brings back memories........2007-06-20

i know that a lot of people claim to have gone to the original woodstock concert, but i really did. and of all the great bands who played there, this was the best. i will never forget their great set. the lead singer and guitarist was a black man who played his guitar left-handed. the best song they played there was a great, great song about somebody named Purple Hayes, who could get into your mind. i think the title of the song was "Purple Hayes." unfortunately i have never been able to find that song on an album, but this album is great anyway. i just discovered it, and it is full of great songs. there is one song here called "Stairway to Heaven," which is about a stairway that goes up to Heaven. cool. and there is other neat stuff, too. get this record. you should. and if anyone knows what album "Purple Hayes" is on, please please please let me know.

ZOSO.......2007-06-12

This is the album that got me in to Zepp, and the first one I ever bought.
This ground breaking recording was Zepplin's #1 album, and if this would have been the only album they would released, I think they still would have had just as much of and impact on the world as they do now.


1. Black Dog- Strange name but awesome song, and one of the best riffs ever!!! 5/5


2. Rock And Roll- This song is exactilly what the name is; Rock And Roll. It's Zeppelin at their best, Jimmy Page's solo is simply amazing and fits with the song. Perfect riff, Perferct title, and a perfect solo make this song, well...perfect! 5/5

3. Battle of Evermore- It's always nice to slow it up a bit with some thing accustic, and "Battle Of Evermore" is that something accustic. This song really shows off Robert Plant's vocal range and fetures matiline. Bring it Back! 5/5

4. Stairway to Heaven- This is a song that needs no introduction, it's such a totamic peace of music, mainly because it is a constant climing song. It has some of the stragest lyrics of all time, and is known for having a backwards massage. Message or not it is still an amazing song, and Jimmy gives one of the best solos ever. 5/5

5. Misty Mountain Hop- This is the first Zeppelin song I ever heard and it still rocks. Greatest riff of all time? Maybe, but one thing that I know that everyone thinks at some point is, "What the hell is a Misty Mountain Hop?" The world may never know. 5/5

6. Four Sticks- This is a highly underratted song. It has tons of cool elements about it, Electric and accustic guitar parts, cool vocals, and great keyboard. Classic hard rock song. 5/5

7. Going To California- Another accustic song, nice and mellow. 4/5

8. When the Leeve Breaks- Best drum beat ever, provided by the one and only Bonzo. Heavy riff with some harmonica, great way to finish off a great album. 4.5/5

I would like to start this review by stating that this is, arguably, the greatest rock album ever recorded. I don't see how it has an overall 4.5 star rating and it's all of the idiotic 1-star reviews that bring it down. I'm not calling it the best rock album of all time because I'm giving in to the hype about it, because I'm not. I own it and have listened through it over a hundred times so I am more than familiar with it, along with the rest of Zeppelin's music. This is simply the most complete, diverse and distinctive album ever. Not only are Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham gods of their instruments but they are likewise with song writing. The songs range from funky rock and roll (Black Dog, Rock and Roll) to groovy melodies (Misty Mountain Hop) to the more melodic ballads (Battle of Evermore, Going to California) to the epic heavy hitters on the album, Stairway and When the Levee Breaks. These four guys have mastered blues-inspired rock and roll and play it like no other. Jimmy Page is equally masterful and brilliant with the electric and acoustic guitars and his melodies are some of the most unconventional, odd time-signatured yet captivating ever. This is the quintissential hard rock album and it seems like all other albums should be measured up against this one.

I give every single song on this album a 10/10 with the exception of Four Sticks, which I would give a 9.5. Albums can't really rate much higher.

These are the gods of rock and this is their masterpiece. No person who claims to listen to rock should be without it. Don't pay any attention to the 1-star reviews, or the 2- and 3- star reviews, for that matter. They are ridiculous and written solely out of rebellion. Let them listen to their Fallout Boys and Nirvanas and Panic at the Discos. This is real music.

I am someone who usually does not give in to fads and trends just for the sake of doing it, but Led Zeppelin IV is a trend that I can't help but follow. It's simply the best..

If time is the true test, then Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits confirms that they really were one of the greatest rock & roll bands in the world. While, in retrospect, fellow graduates of the class of 1987 are about as cool as poodle perms and spandex, the L.A. bad boys still rock like gods. Listening to the sun-drenched chords of "Paradise City" and the ensuing stadium-sized swagger is enough to make wearing leather trousers and bandanas seem like a good idea. Of course, it helped that for them sex, drugs, and rock & roll was a way of life, not a fashion statement. As Axl Rose wails "I wanna watch you bleed" on "Welcome to the Jungle" like a chain-smoking lunatic possessed, it's hard not to believe he meant it. Yet equally, it was his surprisingly poetic nature that made genuinely touching love songs of "Patience" and "Sweet Child of Mine."

Though none of their subsequent albums matched the drug-crazed genius of Appetite for Destruction, they did, as the Greatest Hits reminds, have their moments. From the bloated Use Your Illusion I & II came ultimate rock ballads "Don't Cry" and "November Rain," along with the primal rage that was "You Could Be Mine." And while the covers of the The Spaghetti Incident? were largely forgettable, the fact that their final single was a seedy sneer through the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" seems spectacularly fitting. --Dan Gennoe

If you want the real deal from GNR just go out and get Appetite For Destruction.During the 80s there was GNR and Metallica two of the biggest bands in metal and if you know the legacy of Metallica you would sure understand that thats quit a feet to be alongside the most publicized metal band ever. if you like AFD then get the EP entitled lies which is a raw extension to AFD and then when your in the mood for something more toned down get both use your illusions cds. Sorry guys this album is mediocre at best and you can't cheat yourselves by getting a half hearted compilation go out and get AFD and Use Your Illusions 1 and 2.

I love GNR. They remain one of my favorite bands. They put so much feeling into their music and lyrics (even those that are about drugs and sex). This was the first GNR CD I bought, and at the time I was in love with them. Years later I was pushed by a friend to buy Appetite for Destruction. I said to him, "I already have their greatest hits." But he replies, "No you don't. Not really." So eventually I bought AFD, and I was blown away. It is one of the greatest albums ever written. It's absolutly astounding. I am shocked to see that this greatest hits collection only had three songs from AFD. I no longer listen to this collection. Songs like Nightrain, Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, and Rocket Queen weren't included. They certainly are better than some of the Medicore songs on here like Yesterday, Since I don't have you, and Such Fun. How were they hits, they were cover songs that did little to elevate the bands success. Where's It's So Easy, Coma, Estranged, and Garden of Eden. (even their underrated songs just mentioned are better than some songs on this track). If you want GNR's best, buy Appetite for Destruction and Use your Illusion I & II. If you want one CD then just get AFD.

Guns And Roses - A Decent Compliation.......2007-05-01

Talk about a band that had it all and pretty much threw it all away. Guns And Roses is the classic example of a band that came from nothing, hit the big time quickly, and then flushed it down the drain in a sea of drugs, alcohol, greed and general vice. The fact that they treated their fans like [...] did not help matters either. Showing up hours late at concerts or not showing up at all. Having hissy fits in the middle of shows and walking off the stage. It is really amazing to me these guys have maintained the audience that they have given the way their fans have been treated. This is a band that could have been the biggest hard rock band in the world, but basically blew it. Still, there is no denying that they produced some great rock n roll. The band really only put out 4 studio albums, so most people who are big fans of the band probably already have most of what is on this disc. As a compilation it is a decent collection. Naturally there is a lot of material from "Appetite For Destruction". The two "Use Your Illusion" albums are both well represented as well. My all time favorite G & R tune is probably "November Rain" which is here in all it's symphonic glory. Several covers are also here including Bob Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door", Paul McCartney's "Live And Let Die", and The Rolling Stones "Sympathy For The Devil". All in all this is a decent collection if you just want to get the band's best known songs.

Ozzy returns with a startlingly heavy ninth studio album, a record filled with vows to continue his rock 'n' roll ways ("Not Going Away," "I Don't Wanna Stop"), meditations on the state of a world that has changed surprisingly little since Black Sabbath's early days ("Black Rain," "God Bless the Almighty Dollar") and the obligatory ballad ("Here for You," which can be read either as a letter to a lover or a love letter to his fans). There's no "Crazy Train" or "Mama I'm Coming Home" here but Black Rain is a more convincing statement for it. You MUST buy this if only for collections sake. Since this will be his last album (or so says he) you Must savor it!!
Mr. Ozman Sir, you are a master artist of your genre, your contributions to R & R will be grieviously missed.
Even though I love only 2 of the songs, I will listen to this and cherish the music and your voice and lyrics.
You are a delicious little addiction of mine.

Five out of Ten songs = 5 stars.......2007-07-24

When I first listened to this CD, I was blown away because the first three tracks were all songs that I liked and I began thinking that this could become the best Ozzy album EVER! Those thoughts quickly evaporated as I listened to tracks 4-7 and found myself wondering how things went so wrong in the middle of the album. Tracks 8-10 restored my excitement and left me with mixed feelings after my first listen.

Since then, I have found that I absolutely love the songs "Black Rain" and "Countdown's Begun". I have played those over and over and I feel they really carry this album. "I Don't Wanna Stop" is probably my third favorite and then "Not Going Away" would be next. For the fifth best track, I would have to decide between the ballad "Here For You" or "Trap Door".

I know a lot of people have complained about the packaging for the CD, but I would like to remind everyone that Ozzy was giving away FREE concert tickets in those early release CDs. I am sure the thin packaging and cardboard slip cover helped cut down on the CD processing costs. This may have helped Ozzy to be able to give away an entire tour for free. I would also appreciate liner notes and better packaging, but if you had to choose between that and free concert tickets, I think the tickets provide a lot better value so I find it hard to complain.

When I think about this CD overall, I find that I really enjoy about half of the ten songs and find the others somewhat forgettable. For this reason, I decided to give it five stars, even though I don't truly feel it is worthy of that high of a rating (maybe 4.5 stars??). I suppose my logic is anytime you find an album that has five out of ten good songs that you like, I think that qualifies as an excellent album.

Ozzy's Back.......2007-07-18

Finally!!! A new Ozzy album. Good album; although a bit on the soft side (similar to Down to Earth). This album is filled with thick Zakk riffs and licks, which was worth the purchase. If you're an Ozzy fan, it's worth the purchase, if only to add to the collection.

Very good album, very consistent........2007-07-17

At first, I was not blown away by this. But after a few more spins, I really started to like it. It is not as heavy as some of his earlier stuff, but it is better than most of his later work. I like most of the songs. There are no big standouts, but not any really low points either. The album is pretty even and if you like any other work from Ozzy, you probably will enjoy this.

My favorite track is "Lay Your World On Me" and my least favorite is "Trap Door".

My favorite Ozzy album is "No More Tears" followed by "No Rest For The Wicked" which were the first 2 albums Ozzy used Zakk Wylde. I do also really like "Diary Of A Madman", but only for the few standouts it has. I did not care much for "Down To Earth" which was the last album Zakk was on.

Along with this album, I am currently listening to Megadeth-United Abominations, Dream Theater-Systematic Chaos, and Kamalot-Ghost Opera.

Ozzy rocks.......2007-07-13

Ozzy rocks with this one. I would highly recommend it. Many of the songs are on current topics, war, global warming, but with the Ozzy and Zakk Wylde sound we've loved throughout the years. His voice has never been better.

Do What They Say.............2007-07-31

I have been a huge Korn fanatic since Follow the Leader came out in 1998, and I have remained a loyal fan ever since, even after they released the not-so-hot See You On The Other Side. Besides that album (which had some good songs, but the rest was weak and watered down) the rest of the Korn discography has been great, with their self-titled, Follow the Leader, and Issues being some of my personal favorites.


Now onto the review of Korn's second self-titled release.
I feel that this album is a new start for Korn, after losing Head to Christianity and David Silveria temporarily being on a hiatus. Even though those two are gone, we get back some old korn elements. Returning on this outing, is the dark, angry, and sometimes depressing sound that Korn was known for in the mid-to-late 90s. The old Korn guitar-crunching and Fieldy's signature bass plucking is back as well for a good portion of the songs, which is a nice return to form. Besides all of the old, but essential elements to Korn's music, they somehow manage to sound different and creative. The dark atmoshperic tone to the cd is basically industrialized, but is extremely effective. Pianos, synthesizers, and even violins are thrown into the mix this time around, which adds a depressing mood to the sound. Jonathan Davis' vocals are as good as ever, and you'll even get to hear him growl a little at the end of "Killing." I am really impressed with Munky's guitar work. I couldn't be happier with him taking over all of the guitar duties. Just listen to the album to see/hear what I mean. Another thing that I am happy about is that The Matrix left Korn early on while making the album. Good thing this happened or else we could've ended up receiving another See You On The Other Side, which is a no-no. Atticus Ross took over the production, and that's why this album has an electronic tone to it, but don't let that steer you away from this album. It is classic and kicks SYOTOS in the teeth. In my opinion, this release ranks above Untouchables, Take A Look In The Mirror, and comes somewhat close to their first four albums.

For those that grew tired of Korn's signature blend of NU-Metal/Hip Hop, this ones for you...

"Untitled" is going to be the album that divides the Korn fan base. On one side you will have the hardcore NU-Metal lovers who will hate this album because it stretches so far into a more mainstream rock sound, pretty much leaving out most of the hip hop and Nu-Metal styles.

And on the opposite side, there will be those true, dedicated fans who will see that "Untitled" is Korn evolved, stretching out past the loss of two core members and trying out new territory.

2007 has brought MANY changes to the face of music, especially from staples such as Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park and most notably, Korn.

I admit, that after Issues, everything that Korn released was an un-original bore. Each album after Issues contained music that they have pretty much already done before. It was tiring, especially their angsty message, which had been repeated since their original self titled release in 94.

While Untitled doesn't showcase anything amazing in terms of the lyrical department, its the music that really shines here. I will say that Jonathan's vocals are much more realized and focused than on previous outings. We are also treated to a wide range of vocal styles from gutteral death growls, clean vocals, and his signature growl/scream style.
-One thing that I do really like about this album is that Jonathan's vocal style is largely different in terms of rhythm than on previous Korn offerings. This is a GOOD thing:) The vocals deviate away from the usual blend of incoherent babble and quasi-hip hop and take the form of rock.

And that is what makes this album so special, the melodies are very different and less Nu-Metal.

For the most part, those signature repetitive power chord thumps found most prevalent on every-single-Korn-album are missing from "Untitled", and in their place are guitar melodies and harmonies that are vastly mutated under electronic manipulation. The power chords still rear their ugly head once in a while, but they have been put in their proper place.

Synth's and Keyboards add a much needed dimension to the music, providing all sorts of sound effects and melodies. They really fill out the sound.

The drumming is rather normal, nothing special or different here. Mostly keeping time, but it fits the music really well.

Fieldy's bass lines are much more in the background on this one, but they fit the music really well too.

"Untitled" is a nice blend of rock,industrial, electro and ambiance that fits nicely into a mainstream mold, a nice break from the "usual" Korn stuff. Think more NIN and less Korn. One thing you will notice on "Untitled", is that Korn sounds like they are actually enjoying this music.

Each instrument is subject to electronic manipulation, which gives room for a lot of variety.

Overall, "Untitled", while not breaking new ground or shattering the envelope, is Korn's most original effort since their debut record.

This is the best korn album i've heard in years. Every song is just epic. i highly recommend this album to anyone.
