What an amazing album! This is Karen Marie Garrett's third album, and it is a real find. I am immensely impressed with the delightful melodies which run consistently throughout this album. Tip-Toe Dancer has to be heard to be believed. It is such a beautiful piece of music, and makes the listener want to stand up and start dancing. This track is just one of an album full of highlights. Welcome B and Simple Things are so delicate. This album is produced by Windham Hill founder Will Ackerman. Consequently, the production is first-class. A joy from beginning to end. Bravo!!

"Allure of Sanctuary" is the second CD released by Karen Marie Garrett. It is astounding how much this artist has grown since her 2002 debut, "Pensare Piano." Will Ackerman's gifts as producer certainly helped to make this CD as breathtaking as it is, but if the quality of music isn't there, no producer in the world can give it soul and depth - and this CD has mega-doses of both. A classically-trained pianist from the age of five, Ms. Garrett plays with the strength and emotional clarity that come from years of expressing oneself at the piano, sharing the joys and sorrows of life with the beloved 88's. The twelve pieces include eight original compositions, a lovely arrangement of "The Green Hills" by Brian Gibson, and Erik Satie's "Trois Gnossiennes," performed as originally composed. Most of the pieces are piano solo, but Garrett is joined on two by award-winning cellist Eugene Friesen (I LOVE cello and piano together!). Some of the other tracks have English horn, light percussion, and wordless vocals, but this is truly an incredible piano album.

The CD begins with "Tip-Toe Dancer (Kathryn's Song)," one of the lighter pieces in this collection. It was inspired by a story told by a close friend about a childhood dance performed for friends and family. Graceful yet playful, it is easy to imagine the seriousness of the young dancer and the warm reception of the adults. "Lake EWOK Muse" is an improvisational duet for piano and cello that followed a sunrise meditation beside Lake EWOK at Skywalker Ranch, where the album was recorded. The feeling of serenity envelops you as you listen to the two artists interact seamlessly, creating a perfect sense of peace. "Simple Things" is a celebration that begins in a classical style reminiscent of a children's piano study and evolves, retaining the sweet melody and simplicity of the message but becoming a full and graceful solo. The title track is fascinating. It begins with a mournful piano prelude and becomes a rhythmic dance with a seductive Spanish flavor. Susan Whittle's vocals and percussion provided by Will Ackerman and Derrick Jordan add to the enchantment. "Will's Song" is an improvisational piece that is so deeply felt that it almost sends a chill - what a beauty! "Toll of War (Adagio)" is a wrenching duet for piano and cello. A profound statement of humanity rather than of politics, the sense of loss and pain reach to the depths of the soul. This is a piece that needs to be heard. The gentle, pensive closing track is a solo piano reprise of "Lake EWOK Muse."

New Order is a member of an elite group of long-standing bands whose sound remains innovative, despite a nearly unchanged musical direction. No one touches Peter Hook's warm, startlingly melodic basslines or Bernard Sumner's slightly unsure but instantly recognizable singing. Get Ready is a classic New Order album with a few twists. Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan (who no doubt hero-worshipped the band, like most angst-ridden alterna-youth of his generation) is invited for a guest appearance on "Turn My Way," and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie aids New Order in producing the dirty, Stones-ripping tune "Rock the Shack," an imitation of Scream's 1994 single, "Rocks." Fans might be taken aback by the disc's occasional sophomoric lyrics, but given the band's standard for poetic prowess, it may be safe to assume that lyrics like "Here comes love/it's like honey/you can't buy/it with money" are tongue-in-cheek. The CD is bookended with its best songs: "Crystal" is one of their finest singles ever, layered with synthesized rhythm tracks and a beautiful interplay between Sumner and a backing female vocal, and "Run Wild" is a tastefully lush ballad that summons those painful and glorious emotions that somehow are unique to the band's music. Few rock groups that equally utilize keyboards and guitars have survived the post-Nirvana shakeout, but Get Ready is further testimony that while trends and musical movements come and go, New Order will always matter. --Beth Massa

Tea with the devil.......2007-03-25

Thirty years and counting, and never a dull moment. New Order's simplistic lyrics may not be everybody's cup of tea, but those lyrics have a mile-wide streak of wryness and bone-dry wit that easily whizzes over the head of some. Hooky's bass, as usual, powers the whole thing along, and it's utterly astonishing that a bunch of 50-year-olds are still writing songs about falling in love and taking drugs, and making you feel like you're in love or on drugs when you hear those songs. This is a deep and emotional album, shot through with hard-core existentialism and a pop sensibility that is only possible to achieve after 30 years of breaking the mold. Personally, I have loved this band (and, of course, Joy Division) ever since I was a boy in the 1970s. "Get Ready" shows absolutely no signs of tiredness, jadedness, repetetiveness, and is the work of a band fully at the peak of its game.

Some of their best, some of their worst..........2007-03-20

New Order has always been about seeming contradictions. They often sound melancholy, yet upbeat. The lyrics rarely match the mood of the music. They even recorded a song (Blue Monday) dominated by a drum machine generated beat, yet the most machine-like aspect of the song is the deadpan delivery of the vocals. Their singer can barely sing. His lyrics are often amateurish. The bass, rather than the guitar, is the lead instrument on many of their songs, and their keyboardist was recruited primarily because she was the drummer's girlfriend. They started as the remaining pieces of a great band (Joy Division), yet one whose arguably most talented member (Ian Curtis) had hung himself. As one reviewer once said of New Order, "rarely has so much been accomplished with seemingly so little". The results have often been stunning, and have made them my all time favorite band.

So it is with mixed emotions that I review yet another seeming New Order contradiction - the album "Get Ready". Released 8 years after their previous effort, "Republic", by all rights these guys should have been washed up, over the hill and counted out. Yet, this album contains several tracks that are as good, or better than, anything else they recorded in their stellar career. I give this album 4 stars because these tracks should not be missed.

Sadly, at the same time, several of the tracks on the album are downright horrible... maybe they deviate too much from the classic New Order sound that I love, maybe they really are the ill-advised forays into sonic territory previously unexplored by this band that they sound like, and maybe they really just are uninspired. Whatever the case, if all the songs on the disc sounded like these, it would be very hard to recommend the album, New Order or not.

The album starts off on a very positive note, with the single Crystal. The lyrics, often a New Order weakness, are nothing to write home about here. "We're like Crystal, We break easy. I'm a poor man, if you leave me." they start. Yet, the massive drum beat at the start pulls you in, and when the shimmering guitar riffs start you know that yes(!), after 8 years, New Order is back, and as good as ever. If there was any doubt, a Peter Hook bass solo follows - that signature element of the New Order sound that sounds as sweet now as the first time I heard it, all those years ago. (9.5/10)

The second track is 60 Miles An Hour. A respectable, if not stellar effort. The song is carried by Hooky's bass and Morris's drumming, especially at the beginning. Rockier than just about any New Order track from any previous album. Unfortunately it meanders in the middle. But, a great Hooky bass solo at the end accompanied by a nice synth line ends the song on a positive note. (7.5/10)

Next up is Turn My Way. Simply put, this song is cringe-worthy. Why they felt the need to collaborate with Billy Corgan, I doubt I'll ever understand. What, New Order (New Order!) can't sound good on their own? Its as if Eddie Murphy thought he needed help from Adam Sandler to be funny. Unfortunately, Corgan's presence leads to a song that simply sounds like a bad combination of New Order and Smashing Pumpkins as he and Bernard Sumner sing a duet. Their voices do not blend well together. The lyrics are again inane, only this time there is little to make up for it... "Don't wanna have to work / like other people do /I want it to be free / I want it to be true". (4/10)

Following Turn My Way is Vicious Streak, with a much slower tempo than any of the three prior tracks. In fact, it strays dangerously close to ballad territory, and the instrumentation is rather dull. "What am I going to do? I feel like I'm on fire. If you only knew, that you're object of desire". Fortunately, the chorus is somewhat catchy..."I keep hanging on, I keep hanging on, and I swear by God that you're the only one. I keep hanging on, I keep hanging on, and I swear by God that it won't be long." (6.5/10)

Primitive Notion sounds more like Joy Division than anything New Order has done since, well, Joy Division. Hooky's bass starts things off, joined by Morris's driving post-punk precision drumming, then joined by Sumner's guitar. Probably Sumner's 2nd best lyrical effort on the album. "I've done it before, and I'll do it again. Charged with a life that'll burn to the end. How can it be that we're so far apart? I want it to be like it was at the start." (8/10).

Slow Jam is up next. This entire track would have been best left on the cutting room floor. The lyrics are uninspired and are simply an exercise in putting together some poor rhymes. "Again, it manages to sound like a bad combination of New Order and something they're simply not - a heavy metal band. (4/10)

Rock The Shack is the other collaborative effort on the album, this time with Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream. The song ends up sounding more like the Strokes than New Order. It reveals the weakness of Sumner's voice when he tries to hit the high notes and the screaming parts. And the chorus is abominable. "Rock the shack, Rock the shack, Rock the shack, Rock the shaaaaaaaaack". Bernard Sumner may not be the best lyricist ever, but he can do a lot better than that. An uninspired and lackluster effort.(4/10)

Someone Like You gets us back on track. This is a truly excellent song. A quirky, cool synth bit starts us out and carries through the song, and Morris's drums are ever present and brilliant as they always are when placed at the top of the mix. Hooky's bass is present and accounted for. "This can't be real, my heart is burning. How does it feel? Lets say I'm burning". Female backup singers join Sumner for the chorus and the result is perhaps different than anything New Order did prior to Get Ready, but easily as good as anything they did before, too. (9/10)

Close Range keeps up the momentum. Again Morris's drums carry the song. Best lyrics on the album - about helping a drug addicted friend. "You've got to pull yourself together man! You've got to get back on your feet again. How can I ever make you understand? You've got the world right in your hands..." The vocals do not exceed Sumner's abilities and everything sounds great. Hooky's bass comes in with a couple of typically brilliant solos, which all combine to make this the best song on the album, one which they could have recorded during their heyday and it wouldn't have sounded out of place on Low Life or Brotherhood. (9.5/10)

Run Wild closes out Get Ready. Again, a very slow song. I think this one clearly does cross the line into ballad territory. Thankfully, as ballad's go, its pretty good. "If Jesus comes, to take your hand, I won't let go, I won't let go...". Harmonica-like instruments come in to play, for the first time since "Love Vigilantes" on Low Life. The most melancholy we get on this album. (7/10)

i came out of rehab a week ago and this cd hasnt left my alarm clock since. waking up in a medicate dhaze with the sun blazing into my room isnt good motivation but this cd makes me think about my old days and keeps me cheerful in the morning. very easy on my vocal chords too :D perfect morning music

Don't love it.......2007-01-19

Maybe I haven't given it time to grow on me yet, but I'm not overly impressed. I have had all their albums up to this one for a long time and had high hopes for this one, especially based on the other reviews here. It reminds me more of Regret (and some of the second Electronic album) than earlier albums and none of the songs really jump out at me. I've only listed to it three times, so I'm sure I'll warm up to it a bit more.

Same old same..........2007-01-06

Look, I really have enjoyed some of their stuff over the years. I bought this when it came out, gave it a listen, and put it away. It didn't register much one way or the other. Same sound. My seventeen year old daughter recently grabbed some of my cd's along with some of her's and loaded up the ten cd changer in the bug. We listened to "Get Ready," and I cringed at the vocals, really lame: "I live to die, I live to get high." Whatever. Her choice "Lucy Ford" by Atmosphere came up next and blew me away with its honesty and vibe, and I'm not even a big rap fan! I immediately tried to sell my copy of "Get Ready" here. Used price: $1.19. Says it all. Want a similar sound to "Get Read," but with intelligence? Try Electronic's "Raise the Pressure" instead. It won't embarass you.

Even the most high-minded hip-hop connoisseur will have a hard time fronting on the booty-bounce directive, "Shake Ya Ass," surely one of 2000's most memorable songs. The lead single off Mystikal's fourth album encapsulates his whole approach: guttural, grunted directives and sexist boasts over some seriously funky production (courtesy Outkast, the Neptunes, and the Medicine Men). Check the tropical backdrop and Nivea-blessed chorus of "Danger" and the wah-wah guitar/808 combo of "Big Truck Boys" for the funk; check nearly every song for that vulgar braggin' and boastin'. The raw bass and slinky rhythm of "Smoked Out" is a nice Southern take on G-funk, and it's a welcome reprieve from the thick "come hither" machismo which dominates much of the other songs. When he's not stroking his ego, though, Mystikal does a good job getting serious too. Uncovering the bad side of the bling, tracks such as "Ain't Gonna See Tomorrow" and "Murderer III" impressively display a more socially aware and mature Mystikal. --Hua Hsu

Rock Solid........2006-01-06

Mystikal developed a totally new style and attitude with this release. Having strayed away from the tank was the beginning of the end however but there were no signs of that on this LP. Great production and great flow make this album a southern must-have.

Lacking.......2005-07-25

Life after No Limit wasn't very kind to Mystikal, and even with the Neptunes production this album isn't very good. The singles, "Shake Ya A*s" and "Danger" are fine, good rap songs, but as a whole the album isn't great. He doesn't have as much to say as he used to, and he spends most of his time bragging about nothing or yelling at nobody in particular for no apparent reason. This was entertaining for a few albums, but it's gotten old and without the No Limit squad, Mystikal has proven pretty one dimensional. A lot of the songs are pretty much the same, and only a few guest appearances lighten up the album. Da Brat and Petey Pablo lend an OK rhyme on "Come and see about me" and the best track is obviously "Neck Uv Da Woodz", where OutKast pretty much does the entire song. Without C-Murder and Master P and the rest of no limit, Mystikal isn't much, even though this was his most commercial success. People wanting to own some Mystikal ought to buy "Mind of Mystikal" or one of his No Limit releases.

Its alright.......2004-12-09

Nothing special, but its OK. Not as good as his previous efforts. The radio hits are OK, [Shake Ya Ass & Danger], but they is only really one song that is "outstanding", being Neck Uv Da Woods (w/ Outkast). There are many songs that are still tight, such as I Rock, I Roll, U Would If U Could, Mystikal Fever, and Ready To Rumble, but not "outstanding". This is not a bad album at all, in fact it duznt have many "bad" tracks, but Mystikal just hasn't put enough into it. Better than latter releases though. A good listen, so still pick this cd up even if you are just a rap fan, but don't expect too much from it.

And that's broken record! The last CD Mystikal did before dis (Ghetto Fabulous)was off tha chains! This one ain't! For instance, the first track is pretty much like the 7th one except it's like a clean remix. He doesn't yell as much which he's known for. If it was produced from no limit then maybe it would rise a lil higher to impressive. Now he has his greatest hits oot while serving time.

This album is awesome i've had this album for like over a year n a half now and i still listen to it like every day this alum would definitely be in the top 30 out of all my albums. the best songs are "shake ya a**", "ready to rumble", "jump", "danger", "i rock, i roll" & my fave "mystikal fever".

Album Description

"Get Ready To Fly" is Big Beat's second volume of rarely-heard 1960s masters from the vaults of the legendary Norman Petty studios. This time the focus is on the mindbending rock and pop sounds the producer recorded during the late 1960s.

Petty was the first to admit he had little taste for psychedelia, but his exceptional abilities as an engineer allowed the producer to sonically indulge the young bands who visited the studios to the fullest. The results were some of the spaciest sounds to emanate from an American studio in that era, a fascinating potpourri of raging fuzztone, swirling organ and Anglophile harmonies.

Several of the items on "Get Ready To Fly" are acknowledged pop-psych classics, such as the Apple-Glass Cyndrum's `Someday', `To Give Your Lovin'' by the Happy Return and the Hooterville Trolley's `No Silver Bird', but extensive research into the Petty archives has resulted in a tremendous programme of obscure classics and never-before-heard gems. The artists represented journeyed from such disparate locales as Utah, Montana, Mississippi, Texas, Colorado, Missouri and Canada to record with Petty in Clovis, New Mexico.

With unprecedented access to the original master tapes, the sound quality on "Get Ready To Fly" is second to none, and the accompanying booklet is packed with information on this little-documented episode in Norman Petty's career, with the full participation of many of the former band members.

Big Cock should be the biggest rock band on the planet. I think a name change could help that as nobody in their right mind will ever say the name on the radio or TV. I love every song on this CD and Robert Mason is a great singer and front man. There is no lack of attitude on this CD and these guys walk it like they talk it.

This is an absolutley amazing album. Not one bad song. All melodic 80's inspired, inuendo packed, hard rockin' sing along songs. A must have. I heard about it on the net at Sleezerocks.com and then on the www.hairballjohn.com net radio show. These guys don't let you down...EVER.
I crank this one to 11 in my car and I can sing along with them all.

I was truly blessed by Virtue's songs. It was as if they just know exactly what people are going through and make the perfect song for that situation. I love them so much and I always tell people that I am the long lost member of the group because I can't stop singing like them. God bless!!!

A Gospel Group Beyond Comprehension.......2001-05-20

Virtue is one of the best gospel groups out there. In a group of four women they sing beautiful songs that soothe the spirit. Their songs have unique and uplifting lyrics, beats, and rythym. One of my favorites would be "I Must Tell Jesus" on their first album.

Once you get either the first album "Virtue" or the second album "Get Ready" you'll be ready for any other music that has Virtue's name in it.

Be prepared, also, because Virtue's newest album should be for sale in July of 2001! I know I can't wait!

I have heard a lot of christian female vocal groups but none to this calibur. Virtue has the ability to be one of the gratest vocal groups of all time. Their tight harmonies and lovely voices only make you want to fall in love with the Master all over again. This new project has uplifted me to a hight where I am alone in the arms of my Maker, praising His name for everything He ever did for me. If you are buying only one CD this year, you must make this the one.

"Get Ready for This" is 2 Unlimited's first album. This contains there first two worldwide hits "Get Ready for This" and the even satisfying "Twilight Zone". The other tracks of the album are just as fabulous as the hits. This groups' music is strictly recommended to electronic dance fans. This is techno music at its best, Anita and Ray are excellent musicians. Hello, it's me again! The same reviewer as before, who gave his other review the summarry title, "Really, I would Give It 2 1/2 Stars If I could." Well, I'm back, reviewing the same cd again, because there are 2 things that I forgot to put in my last review.

There are 2 things I didn't put in my last review that I feel neccessarry to add in and tell you about. First of all, I said that I was from Bombay, India when I wrote my other review. Well, the truth is that I'm not Indian at all. I'm actually, totally American. I just travel around the world a lot. I'm currently in the Netherlands, the home of 2 Unlimited's fan club right now. Second of all and more importantly for this review, I feel it extreemly neccessarry to tell you that despite what I said in my last review, I only meant SOME of the songs were bad. Not every song on it is bad. There are some good ones. (My favorites of which are the orchestral mix of, "Get Ready For This," and, "Contrast.") It's just that SOME of the songs are bad.

Well, that's all! You can read from me next in my review for "Hits Unlimited," the album that's tons better than this one! I will be writing a review on that soon! Until then, "ta, ta!"

really, i would give it 2 1/2 stars if i could........1998-12-29

ever since i first heard the orchestrational mix of "get ready for this," i've always been deeply obsessed with it. when my cousin let me borrow "hits unlimited," the cd that had the vocal version of the song, i found out that the song had a version with words. and the rest of the cd was perfect, too, for me. i liked the cd so much that my cousin got me one for myself on my birthday. then one day when i was looking around in a music store, i found this cd. it had both versions of "get ready for this" on it, plus other songs that were on the other cd, so i bought it. now, after having it for a little while, my conclusion is this: this cd is okay, as far as music, how most lyrics go, and some lyrics are concerned. i mean, most of the music is great! i think most of this is some of the best dance and dj music there is, and i wanna thank and complament the geniuses who wrote it! Most of the music on this cd is perfect, and i give it five stars, and i like the way most of the lyrics go, too. but the lyrics are different. they're the reason why i'm giving this cd 2 stars. some of them aren't good or appropriate, especially the f-word in "workaholic." i mean, i like most of them, don't get me wrong.-but i don't like all of them. i give this cd 2 stars, but i would've given it 2 1/2 stars because most of the music on this cd is so good, but, including and because of some of the lyrics, the whole cd doesn't deserve any rank higher, but they don't let you give 1/2-stars, so i'm giving it a plain 2 stars instead because the whole cd isn't bad, but because of some of the lyrics, isn't good, either.

The best way to explain what this band sounds like is that they are a combination of REM, Hootie and the Blowfish and Dave Matthews with a smidgen of the Allman Bros. for good measure.

This band has a melodic foundation with a marvelous pop sensibility; they are intelligent, crafty, and very talented at every position in the band. Get ready folks, the south is gonna do it again. I normally don't listen to Rock, but this album draws you in. Every song is perfectly done and very smooth. If Dr. Dre did rock music, it would sound like this! This has become my favorite album by far.

These guys really are at the absolute top of the commercial radio pop-rock pile, as good as Collapsis, Athenaeum, and Transmatic. I don't know how these guys haven't got a major label deal, because they're totally better than 95% of major label rock, and every song on this album has hit written all over it.
