These are the things you need to know about Double Up, Mase's sophomore effort. "Stay Out of My Way" samples Madonna and Public Enemy; "Get Ready" rides a interpolation of Shalamar's "Night to Remember" (curiously nothing is heard from the Temptations' classic "Get Ready"); "Make Me Cry" samples Fleetwood Mac and Natalie Cole. And so on. Yeah baby, Puff Daddy taught his protégé well. Like his mentor, Mase is not a preposessing rapper, and his monotone can become rather wearying since he rarely changes cadences. His rhymes are pedestrian at best--he rhymes "Lewinsky" with "convince me," but he's not talking politics. Still, this is a good party or hip-hop dance-class album; the production is razor sharp and the samples are well chosen. Unlike most hip-hop that demands to be foreground, Mase makes music that is perfectly content to be pleasant, lightly funky background music. --Martin Johnson

R. Kelly's rep could be considered controversial at best, but that's not to say the man who does for raunch what Beyoncé does for backsides (that is, caused the masses to arrive at a more multidimensional consideration) is not a fascinating artist. On Double Up, arguably his most sex-crazed, diabolically sleazy CD to date, Kelly grunts like a monkey, envisions a hot and heavy interplanetary romp, and indulges in NC-17-rated rhymes. Stylistically, the self-described king of R&B kicks up a hip-hoppy storm, spitting rapid-fire rhymes and tossing the 'n' word around too freely. But then there's the saving grace: that voice. Throughout a couple of inspirational numbers and collaborations with friends such as Usher ("Same Girl") and Nelly ("Tryin' to Get a Number"), Kelly does what he did so capably on the megahit "I Believe I Can Fly": he reaches even reluctant listeners with deep-seated sincerity. There are way too many guest appearances here. (Twelve, if you want to get technical.) And I believe this is because R. Kelly was fresh out of ideas. I think that he did all this doubling up to swagger jack. You'll see what I mean after hearing "Tryin' To Get A Number" with Nelly. Mr. Kelly is trying to sound exactly like him... imitating him. He even kinda sounds like Usher on "Same Girl." But this is the least of R. Kelly's problems. The songs on here, especially the upbeat tracks, are so simple that they are almost monotone! Seriously, some of these tracks only use two notes on a musical scale. It's like he's trying to rap or something. The songs drag on to the point where it is unbearable. His melodies lack structure or a clear direction, which is really terrible if he wants to make his album almost 80 minutes long. His lyrics are absolutely bogus, seriously imitating monkey sounds, mentioning Charmin toilet paper... and this album has enough terrible metaphors to make and English teacher faint. His subject matter is extremely limited and quite disgusting. This is the biggest waste of money and I'm quite disappointed in myself. Even the two songs I initially liked have become played out and I will never listen to this again. I can't think of anything positive to say for this album. Please heed my warning and do not buy this.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The most difficult task a music lover and follower of R&B/Hip-Hop has when listening to the latest and greatest R.Kelly album is identifying which one of his multiple personalities will be the center of focus for his creative genius.
All of them have provided us with #1 hits and albums and all of them offer enough material to fill a double-disc project and then some.
In case you have a hard time remembering:
R.Kelly: The "bread-and-butter". He will bump and grind you and make you want to wax your Jeep!
The R: Smooth and silky. Like an assembly line at a Chocolate Factory.
Robert Kelly: The more human side. Spiritual, inspirational and uplifting.
The Weatherman: Put on your dancing shoes and "step to the left--step to the right".
Kellz: Hip-Hop with a vengeance! A fusion of smooth and calculated R-and-B with a shot of hip-hop.
His latest effort at making our Jeep speakers burst and our sexual energy peak is Double Up; where the personality "Kellz" runs wild. The artist who invented sing-rapping gives us flow and energy that some artists who classify themselves as rappers can rarely do. The flow between whatever catchy and infectious chorus the R in R&B has decided to infect our minds with is so calculated, so smooth and so rhythmic that on some phrases he doesn't even bother rhyming or connecting the phrases! But at that point, who cares?! R.Kelly's latest literally "has you at hello".
The system that this album works off of has become a staple for the 2000's era of R.Kelly releases. Why create an album based on each personality when you can include ALL of R.Kelly's platinum selling personas at different points in the album? Once he does this, all other R&B singers might as well pack their bags.
R.Kelly brings us lustful and dripping sexual metaphors that which can only come from a man who calls his unit a " giant rocket full of fuel" are found in cuts like Sex Planet, The Zoo and Sweet Tooth. They leave your leg shaking and eyes rolled back for the complete four to five minutes.
Kellz unleashes beasts of radio and windows-down-anthems like Im'a Flirt (Remix), Double Up, Rollin' and Hook It Up. Not only can these be found at your local club but they can also be found endlessly echoing in your head days after your first listen.
Somewhere in the midst of this musical orgasm you find yourself in the Caribbean dancing on the beach with cuts like Freaky in the Club and I Like Love. The Weatherman's taste for the international is only complimented by his taste for a Pina Colada!
The R in R&B's lyrical operas such as Best Friend, Same Girl and Real Talk are in a genre of their own. No one in modern music has been able to construct, compose, story-tell and touch audiences like R.Kelly's sinful and guilty pleasure soap opera music.
After sleeping off the club, sex and fights with his girlfriend we find Robert Kelly serenading us about the birth of his child in Having a Baby. Soon after that we are all driven to Rise Up out of the terrible Virginia Tech tragedy like only R.Kelly inspirational music can make us do.
A song that currently has no real R.Kelly personality tagged to it and is by far the most standout track is Rockstar. This monster of a song featuring Ludacris, Kid Rock and Kellz himself leaves your jaw somewhere by your all-white Air Forice Ones. The haunting electric guitar beat laced with Kellz sing-rapping and Luda's taste for the sexually outrageous is enough. But couple that with Kid Rock's 80's power ballad verse and ubiquitous screaming and you have somewhere R&B and Hip-Hop has NEVER gone before...and would be inclined to say it should go more often.
Double Up is new, fresh, innovative, constructive, risky, calculated and a top seller.
But that's just what R.Kelly does and has done for more than 15 years.

Nevertheless, I supported him. I remember when Chocolate City was released with the bonus Loveland disc, I was the only person waiting to purchase it and got it for only $7.99. Best purchase I ever made as I still play it continously to this day.
Well, I have said all this to say it's been a long time for Kelly to still be in the game but it is time he realizes that a 40 yr old SHOULD NOT be still singing about being a babby daddy and tryin to get a number. I mean the same girl track, come on - he nor Usher is 15!
I rated this album 1 star because I am not a 13 yr old and two, zeros aren't a choice.

Yes, the lyrics weren't deep. But, neither are lyrics for most of the urban stuff coming out these days. So to blame it on just R. Kelly isn't fair. You also have the fans who dictate what's going to fly.
All that said, I like the album from a music standpoint. The production is nice. Most of the rap cameos (minus Nelly) work. The "Zoo" song featuring animal noises was silly toward the end. But, there's also "Rise Up". It's about Virginia Tech, but I'm sure Kelly had that song in the works prior. It's something you can listen to for any situation. Oh..and there's a bonus song that's good.
Overall,I like the album. I see what other people are saying from BOTH sides. But, R. Kelly is an artist who we all should know by now what we're getting into when we purchase an album. There's no real surprises.

On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) For a composer who is (now) recognizably part of the 20th-century classical canon, the French émigré Edgard Varèse's output was astoundingly meager. Just 15 compositions from his entire life (he destroyed the compositions from his early years, and was a merciless editor of his own material in general) made it out to the listening world. Varèse was caught in the chasm between the music of yesterday and the music of tomorrow: scoring music for modified theremin, steamboat whistles, or air sirens, all balanced with the force of a large orchestra; writing pieces based on the flows of water and wind because that's what shapes the earth; using the concepts of chemical reactions and specific gravity as a basis for his music. Using extremes of contrast, dissonance, and variety in sound, Varèse's pieces had power in the way he attacked and shaped the sound he imagined. From Ionisation (1929), scored almost entirely for unpitched percussion, to the electronic-only, three-dimensionally produced Poeme Electronique (1958), he's provided a foundation that many genres, musicians, and composers were to build from not only for the next 40 years, but inevitably beyond. --Robin EdgertonCustomer Reviews:

Anyway, it's very important for the popular knowledge of this composers to have recordings like this, in which everything works perfectly as if it was a clock. After many years having some good recordings conducted by Boulez (Sony) and Nagano (Erato) mainly, we have now the possibility of listening one of the most musical and technical orchestra & baton of this time: The Concertgebouworkest and Riccado Chailly.
Most of the versions in this 2CDs set are the best I know, specially the orchestral works, played with conviction and precision by the Concertgebouworkest, an orchestra that had some problems with Mr.Chailly when they begin to play this, for them, `rare' music. The way Arcana sounds its incredible, full of power, mistery and perfection, the performing of Ameriques is breathtaking and I can only compare it with the truly outstanding version by Pierre Boulez with the CSO for DG. Deserts is a new dimension in Chailly's hands, really terrible and full of dark emotions.
Of course, there are little things that could be a bit better, like the Spanish sung in Ecuatorial, better sung in Nagano's version, but generally the performing is marvellous and the instrumental and ondes Martenot's playing in this piece is perfect in Chailly's version.
The ASKO Ensemble versions are outstanding too, showing a very modern Varèse. The performing of Ionisation, that great jewel, listened with a good Hi-Fi system is a experience not to be lost.
The recordings are very good, not outstanding, as it sounds like distant sometimes, but clear and with good definition, of course better with good electronics.
Booklet and presentation of the box is marvellous too; as it has to be in real event in recorded music in the last decades.
Sound Splitting Music.......2002-06-25
Chailly is great on much of this music. Ameriques and Arcana are sonic extravagazas. And this is the best recording I've heard of Nocturnal and Ecuatorial. Chailly does a good job with the chamber pieces of the 20s and 30s, though I agree with other reviewers, Boulez is much clearer on Ionisation. Chailly misses some of my favorite parts, and I find it hard to hear the first snare drum theme. (I'm also quite partial to Craft's version, but I don't think it's available anymore.)
I also must add to the chorus of exceptions on the questionable material. The orhestrated version of the solo song has no place on this CD. It doesn't sound like Varese, more like Debussy, and though the song is quite impressionistic, I think we presume too much to orchestrate it and pass it off as "complete" Varese. And neither Tune Up nor Dance for Burgess really add much to our understanding of Varese, and are of questionable value. I suspect that Varese would have destroyed them completely had he been able. Much better to have a recording of the revised version of Ameriques. The revision is so extensive, that a side by side comparison would be illuminating.
All in all, I like this CD. Chailly's take on Varese is big and passionate, something that I think both Boulez and Craft miss. Abravanel comes close to this passion, but Chailly wins because of the gorgeous sonics. I highly recommend this CD to those interested in exploring the unique sound world of Varese.
An aural knockout.......2002-02-01
My favorites are, without a doubt, "Ameriques" and "Arcana," two explosive showpieces that will give your sound system quite a workout. But far from being merely loud, the scores have many beautiful textures (including quiet ones) scattered throughout the orchestra, and Chailly captures much of the glittering detail.
I even like "Tuning Up," which may seem like a less substantial work to most ears. To be fair, if the piece is not the last word in Varèse's imagination, it is clever enough for its short duration, and as with everything on this disc, the orchestra sounds superb and totally undaunted. Their virtuosity is both satisfying and thrilling, especially in such seldom-performed music.
Make sure your neighbors are away before turning up the performance of "Ameriques," though - the last few pages will blow your roof off.
I suspect Varèse would have loved this collection.

The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.
It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.

My favorite pieces on the CD are "SD-6 Dance Party," "Red Hair is Better," and "Spanish Heist." I've no idea who the guitarist is on the latter two cuts, but he's quite good!
I recommend this first and foremost to anyone who fears that soundtracks are a dead medium; Giacchino's a challenging composer and takes some real risks. Alias fans will snatch this up (although it doesn't include any soundbites from the TV series), as will anyone willing to play both techno and retro lounge on their CD players. Completists may not be happy with this CD as none of the popular music heard in the show is reproduced here, nor is the torch song Jennifer Garner sang in one episode. But that's what future installments of Alias soundtrack CDs are for!

These are the things you need to know about Double Up, Mase's sophomore effort. "Stay Out of My Way" samples Madonna and Public Enemy; "Get Ready" rides a interpolation of Shalamar's "Night to Remember" (curiously nothing is heard from the Temptations' classic "Get Ready"); "Make Me Cry" samples Fleetwood Mac and Natalie Cole. And so on. Yeah baby, Puff Daddy taught his protégé well. Like his mentor, Mase is not a preposessing rapper, and his monotone can become rather wearying since he rarely changes cadences. His rhymes are pedestrian at best--he rhymes "Lewinsky" with "convince me," but he's not talking politics. Still, this is a good party or hip-hop dance-class album; the production is razor sharp and the samples are well chosen. Unlike most hip-hop that demands to be foreground, Mase makes music that is perfectly content to be pleasant, lightly funky background music. --Martin JohnsonCustomer Reviews:

You got to respect Mase... This album was a classic and Harlem World was one of the greates albums of all time... The only reason Welcome Back was a flop was because there was no promotion what so ever... Diddy did a horrible job.. We all know Mase can see because Harlem World has sold colse to 10 Million copies to date... Now that he is leaving Bad Boy Records, and is offically signed to G Unit, he will get the attention he deserves... Mase is an inspiration to us all and he sends a great messege. 50 Cent is probably the best promoter alive(Thats probably why Jay Z got him to co-executive produce Freeway's sophmore release Free At Last... Jay Z failed to promote his first one at all and it barley went gold so now he callin 50 for help.). As of now, Mase is signed to Bad Boy as well as G Unit, but G Unit's parent company, Interscope, will not sign Mase until he is released from his Bad Boy contract... The working title to his new project is now being called Offically Back... He has also released a mixtape under the classic G Unit Radio series. It is titled.. G Unit Radio pt. 16: Crucified 4 The Hood: 10 Years Of Hate. It was an instant classic... Everybody needs to quit hating and show Mase the proper respect he deserves...
