This is the album on which Aretha finds her voice. She'd previously recorded for another label, but this Atlantic debut created the sound that has come to define her. The tracks read like a greatest hits collection: "Respect," "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man," "Dr. Feelgood," "Baby, Baby, Baby," "A Change Is Gonna Come," and the title track. She's alternately pumped full of soul or scraping her inner being to find more. A classic. --Robert GordonCustomer Reviews:
FOREVER ARETHA, FOREVER THE QUEEN OF SOUL.......2007-03-08
On this CD, Aretha not only defines Rhythmn and Blues; she also defines her version of the Blues. Her Blues is not the Blues of Big Mama Thorton, KoKo Taylor, or Etta James. Aretha's Blues doesn't try to compete or "rock" like a man's Blues. Aretha's Blues is a woman's Blues--smart, sassy, pleading, proud, and defiant all at the same time. One gets to feel it all when she belts out "I Never Loved A Man the Way I Love You," "Soul Serenade," and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man".
And the piano playing--yes, that's Aretha--that pure syncopated gospel style that many church going African Americans take for granted on any given Sunday morning.
Add this body of work to your Aretha collection. You won't have the blues for long and you will come to understand what it means to "go to church."
Soul is a Serious Business - and She's Got it Down!.......2007-02-23
Be sure to buy this. I know that most consider soul a more singles-based genre than an album-based one, but there are quite a few good soul LP's out there that deserve the same recognition as the '60's rock classics. This is one of them.
One Of The All Time Best.......2007-02-15
Timeless soul diamond.......2007-01-13
Anyone with a radio has probably heard Aretha belt out "Respect" and other hits, but checking out an entire album really enhanced my appreciation of her remarkable voice. Her range and power are extraordinary, and to think of her pounding the keys while singing out her anguish and happiness really makes the album magic. Her lively wailing on "Drown in My Own Tears" is soaked in authenticity, and her sultry readings of the title track and "Dr. Feelgood" make it a surprisingly steamy affair. It's great to hear Aretha pour her sweat, heart, and guts into these songs and hear the soft, hard, fiery and sweet sounds her voice is capable of.
The backing band is tight and spot on--there's some really gnarly blues guitar, for instance, on the title track, and "Save Me" doesn't drop a funk-soaked beat. Throughout the whole album, the saxes and brass shine and accentuate the spaces between Aretha's confessions, illustrating the soul truth that simple is powerful. The background singers also help support Aretha's power with soft harmonies (like on the jazzy "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream").
Last, the songs are stupendous. Not only does Franklin conquer Otis Redding's "Respect" and cut the definitive version, she also reimagines Sam Cooke's "Good Times" and gives the man a run for his money on her tender reading of "A Change is Gonna Come." Along the way, she also manages to make soul classics out of a few other songwriters' tunes ("Do Right Woman") AND co-write some soul classics of her very own. Serious business indeed.
I love this CD and listen to it all the time--no matter how radio-overplayed "Respect" is, this album still glitters with the magic that created it and remains part of the bedrock of my modest soul collection.

Masterful--Funny, Creative, and in Control.......2007-06-30
What's most impressive about Rodney Dangerfield--and I'd say the same of Jackie Mason when I saw him in concert--is the absolute mastery and control that he has over his material and the audience. There are several instances of heckling during his set and he quiets them down with a quick retort and doesn't so much as skip a beat. At the end of the album he answers some questions from audience members and shows a flair for both improvisational humor and the ability to tie audience comments back to his own material. I'm stunned that I got this CD for about $7. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better comedy value anywhere. (Just for your calibration purposes, my favorite comedians are "early" George Carlin, Robin Williams, Mitch Hedberg, Woody Allen, Steve Martin, Bill Cosby and the Sklar Brothers.)

Cut from the same cloth as bands like Great Big Sea, Black 47, and the Pogues, the Young Dubliners put some rock 'n' roll in their Irish ditties. Here on its sixth album, the L.A.-based band looks back to the old country, mostly reinterpreting some of the Emerald Isle's greatest songs. Pogues fans will recognize such classics as "If I Should Fail To Fall From The Grace Of God" and "Pair Of Brown Eyes," and there are two Dubliners songs too, but the rest are traditionals as well as one original and one song adapted from a Patrick Kavanagh poem. Likely best enjoyed in the company of friends, this album is prime fodder for night of drinking in the pub thanks to the sing along choruses and big crunchy guitar parts. It's a fair piece from the tradition, but this band manages to keep the communal aspect of Irish music intact, and that means this tribute hits just the right note. --Tad HendricksonAlbum Description
The hard-rockin' Irish band the Young Dubliners celebrate St. Paddy's day with all the gusto and charm only a bunch of good ole Irish lads can do (with a couple of American's to even out the pot). All the pub favorites with a few ballads thrown in for good measure. Why, it's what St. Patrick himself would be hummin' if he had the mind to...Customer Reviews:
Keep up the Tradition.......2007-06-08
The Young Dubliners have covered some of these songs on thier previous albums. Earlier versions of Rocky Road to Dublin and Ashley Falls are far superior on "Rocky Road" as well as Follow Me Up to Carlow and Foggy Dew on "Breathe"
Take one listen to The Foggy Dew on "Breathe" and hear the passion. A great tribute to a great song. Luke Kelly would have been proud. I just don't hear any of that fire in this collection. Not to many groups can cover Pogues songs well and here is another example.
Great idea but it falls short.

I can't get enough of this release! 5+ stars. Worth every cent........2006-11-10
While I have most of Missy's releases, some of them are hit or miss when taking into account every single song, so the beauty here is that you have a collection of her best songs in one CD. There is not a dud in sight.
I had given Missy a rest for a while and for whatever reason this release has made me an even bigger fan if that is possible as it has feel of a party mix but you'll find yourself surprised, at least I did, that they are all Missy and not different artists. While she of course has guest stars in most of her recordings, they are not on just for sales purposes as they bring strong value added to their respective songs.
In a nutshell, if you are not a fan, nothing here will change that. If you are a casual fan it's a must. If you have all her releases and are really short on money, you can make your own mix. While it won't have the remixes, you'll still have a massive collection of songs that will make you want to sing, dance, rule the world. This release easily earns its 5 stars from this fan! While totally irrelevant to my rating, I love the cover of this CD. Missy looks darn GOOD!

Album Description
Import only double-disc collection released by Warner's includes 43 tracks. 'Respect' features all the classic songs by the original Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Rooted in a gospel tradition that was to inform her soul-charged sound, her impact on pop music, and in particular American pop music was profound. It was the run of late-60s Atlantic hits featured here ('Respect', 'Chain of Fools', 'I Say A Little Prayer') that made her a star but as this 'Best of' shows, there was plenty more to come. Aretha was discovered all over again by a new generation in the 80s thanks to her role and performance ('Think') in hit musical The Blues Brothers. Riding high on a wave of success, duets with latter day icons followed like the epic "I Knew You Were Waiting" with stubble-faced George Michael and the anthemic 'Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves' with self-proclaimed diva Annie Lennox. Respect is certainly due to the remarkable talent of Aretha Franklin and this double disc anthology thoroughly represents the diva in her full majesty. Warner. 2002.Album Details

Love it!.......2007-01-08
My mom always talks about the music she used to listen, but she doesn't even have a cassettee tape or even a vinyl record of any of the music she listened to from her childhood through her adulthood. Giving her these cd's was the best idea every. She actually cried!!!! My mom told me listening to these songs, she could remeber who she was with, where she was, and what she was wearing, when she heards the songs that Aretha sang.
The price was great, considering you got two cd's. And they deliveried the day before her birthday.
So, if your looking for a gift to give someone, who always talks about the music they used to listen to, but they don't have any of it, and they love Aretha Franklin. This is the perfect gift.
The Queen of Soul.......2006-02-20
The Queen Indeed.......2006-01-12
Granted, Aretha is one of those singers that with almost every song sung offered an essential piece of music to cherish and remember, however, most fans of her music (and i am one for sure) can still never be without her hits. They're all here. A one disc collection of her recorded work is, frankly, a joke - unless part of a series - like Rhino's The Very Best of Aretha Franklin '60's and '70's CD's. However, a two disc set is fairly acceptable, and this is the best you will find.
Combining the lady's many Atlantic hits, and some slight rarities, as well as her Arista power house throw downs, is a God-send, that any fan will adore, and sew a special pocket on all their clothes for its carriage so as to never be without it(maybe, or is it just me?).
Although thats not to say that only fans would appreciate this collection. I'm sure any more casual fan of, say, Respect or Think or Chain of Fools (which i assume anyone with ears is), would highly likely fall head over heels in love with much of the material included here.
Therefore, it is my recommendation that everybody buy this CD. And might I suggest that if you like this you buy some of her remastered reissued original albums, so as to hear the overlooked gems on each.
Queen of soul.......2005-03-01
Aretha has had many major hits in America although she has not been particularly successful in the British singles charts. During her time with Atlantic, Aretha had two UK top ten hits (Respect, I say a little prayer) and two other UK top twenty hits (Don't play that song, Spanish Harlem). All those hits are included here, together with many of Aretha's other classic recordings for Atlantic, some of which were minor UK hits but all of which did much better as singles in America. These classics include Think, You make me feel like a natural woman, I never loved a man they way I loved you, Chain of fools, Do right woman do right man, Angel, Since you've been gone and Until you come back to me.
With Aretha's distinctive voice and delivery, her cover versions are always interesting. Surprisingly, Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) is omitted, but Bridge over troubled water (Simon and Garfunkel), Oh no not my baby (Maxine Brown) and Let it be (Beatles) are among those included.
Aretha eventually left Atlantic, joining Arista in 1980. This rejuvenated her career although she never quite achieved the level of success that she had in her early years with Atlantic. However, she had two major international hits via duets - Sisters are doing it for themselves (with the Eurythmics) and I knew you were waiting for me (with George Michael), the latter becoming a number one hit in Britain (where it remains her only number one hit) and America. She also just missed the UK top ten with Who's zooming who - but most of her UK hits in the eighties were minor hits, just as they had been in her Atlantic years.
This compilation, spanning several decades of Aretha's music, clearly shows why she is regarded as the Queen of soul. There are many Aretha compilations to choose from, but if you want one covering her whole career, this is as good as you are likely to find.

In the 1960s, the Staple Singers began to make music that spoke to a wider audience than their core gospel fans. Gospel had served as the musical backbone for the Civil Rights movement from the beginning, but Pops Staples was spurred on by the inspirational messages of Martin Luther King Jr. to address more explicitly these issues. This 1972 record, an apex of groovy, mellow soul music (thanks to Al Bell's production and the definition-of-funky Muscle Shoals rhythm section), landed the group three Top 10 R&B hits and their first pop chart-topper, the joyous, bouncy "I'll Take You There." The Staples were always a one-of-a-kind gospel group; they managed to be the only one to inhabit the Top 10 without ever diluting their messages of tolerance, respect, and love. Who can fault any great preacher for wanting to spread the word to as many people as possible, especially when it sounds this glorious? --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

One of the most overlooked bands of all-time.......2006-11-24
To call Vain "glam" really doesn't do them justice. From a strict musical standpoint, they were far more talented and diverse than most of the metal bands who were around in the late 1980s. They weren't gimmicky, which probably contributed to their lack of record sales. If they had simplified it a bit, like maybe Warrant or Britny Fox for example, they probably would have sold millions of records. They were too good for their own good. And their live show was outstanding, too.
The only negative thing about "No Respect" is the occasionally cheesy lyrics. To this day, I can't listen to the chorus of "Aces" without laughing.
I still have an original copy of this on CD (vinyl, too), and I listen to it at least every couple of weeks. It has definitely stood the test of time.
