5 out of 5 stars The Stratocaster Godess.......2007-07-14

Usually, I listen mostly to hardcore metal and glam rock, but few years ago I've noticed a record with a very attractive girl on the cover, sat beside a fender stratocaster. It was Hush by Ana Popovic. Back home, when I put the record in my player I became a fan for life after few minutes. Ana simply drove me to the best of blues, Jazz and Rock music. After Comfort To The Soul, a jewel as well, Still Making History is her third studio album (maybe the fourth, I think she recorded one a long time ago but never found trace of it). I already think that's her best album and if you don't know her it's a very easy way to fall in love with her music. After that you won't be long before beeing in a rush to buy the others one. If you love great guitar players, don't go further, she's probably the best guitar player I've ever seen, and she's such a singer as well, a very strong voice, and even if, like me, you're not a blues or jazz fan, you'll change your mind definitely. If she's coming in your town, don't miss her, I've seen her once on stage, and that was such an experience, and at the end of the concert, don't go away to quickly, Ana loves to meet her fans and to have a chat. Hope to see her again very soon.

5 out of 5 stars This CD deserves to make History.......2007-06-25

I saw Ana Popovic live two years ago and thought she was a great guitarist with a potentially good voice and would be creating some classic blues-mould-breaking music in maybe five years time. I was wrong - she's done it with this CD already.
Ana's Serbian roots have given her plenty of fuel for lyrics here and she writes well beyond her years on difficult themes: The anger that being treated second class because of your birthplace creates (`Hold On'), Third world poverty (`Between Our Worlds'), Our chance to change things for the better(`Still Making History').
Naturally, she lays down first class blues as expected - (`You don't move me', `How'd you learn to shake it like that'); but she also delivers great reggae riffs as on (`Hold on' and `Between Our Worlds') as well as delivering breathtaking jazz vocals, (`Doubt everyone but me' and 'Calenders')
This is an exceptional work that deserves a whole lot more attention than it will probably get. Buy it, play it, and tell your friends!

5 out of 5 stars History In the Making indeed.......2006-08-05

JR Writer puts out an extremely impressive debut mainstream album. He truly shows why he wears his wings. His lyricism and delvery are incredible. The beats are sizzling and there is no track that gives up. Every song is incredible. A few diplomats show up to lay down their lines, but the majority of the album is JR showing that he can rap with the best. My personal favorite is Goonies feat. Jim Jones and Hell Rell followed closely by Why Try feat. S.A.S. S.A.S. sounds eerily like Bone Thugs N Harmony on the hook on theis track. All the tracks on this album are banging placing History In the Making as one of the best albums of the year.

5 out of 5 stars The Movement Continues............2006-07-28

The title definitely fits well with this album cause J.R. proved that he can do more than just the mixtape scene with joints like "Grill Em" and "Xtacy" but besides the singles, bangers like "Riot Pump" and "He's Moving" definitely bang out, "High Music" is funny as ****. His heart felt joints are "To Be a Diplomat" and "My Life". Fire album along with "Killa Season", cop both if you a fan of The Movement. P.S. Better than all of the down south crap coming out(excluding Wayne, T.I., and Luda)

    2 out of 5 stars Wackness.......2006-07-28

J.R. Writer sounds like a baby CamRon in voice, flow, and rhyme scheme. Even though in my opinion he's a little bit better than CamRon, that's still not saying much (since CamRon is arguably the worst rapper out right now). The album isn't as horrible as CamRon's album earlier this year either. There are actually some songs that are tight to me and if they aren't tight...they're at least listenable. But listenable doesn't make it good. JR Writer doesn't spit any game, he just raps often rambling along in his slow flow. His rhymes while technically sound, are boring. The production is riding though...always love Dipset beats and really they are the only thing that keep me interested. However, JR Writer is the most talented of anyone in Dipset I've heard so far and has a little potential. Good songs include Byrd Call, Xtaci, and That's A Bet. 2 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars INSANE.......2006-07-27

Another member out of Dipset lights it up. These guys are on a huge roll not just on the streets and the underground, but in the mainstream. This CD JR Writer shows what he does best! Murder anyother rapper out there. His lyrics are straight insane. Gotta say he can straight gangsta rap and then the song Xtasy shows his verstailty so damn much... just damn. I don't see anyother rapper topping this CD this year. Dipset does it again...

    5 out of 5 stars D*** this boys hot.......2006-07-24

in his first non mixtape(writers Block) project History in the Making will go down in the history as possbly thhe best album out this year will have to wait for the games till i decide.Jr writer is solid and has good punchlines this cd is going to be a classic in the future

    Album Description

Berliners say New York's Rebecca Garfein is causing a revival of Reform Judaism in Germany; this mezzo-soprano is making history with her music, recorded in the country where her great -grandmother perished in the Holocaust. In 1997, she became the first female cantor to sing in a synagogue in Germany; where she performed as part of Berlin's International Jewish Cultural Festival; and this exquisite 1998 release captures that ground - (and stained-glass ceiling) - breaking moment. It contains Jewish songs and prayers in Hebrew and Yiddish, selections from the Book of Ruth and Song of Songs - liturgical music previously only chanted my male clergy - operatic in character, performed in what was once the women's gallery in the Oranienburger Strasse Synagogue before its destruction. This live performance was attended by Jews and non-Jews, women and men, together, shattering the historical separation of faiths and genders. Beautiful, significant, and highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected.......2006-01-21

Hmm... Ok, maybe it was not the best reason to want to buy this CD, but I heard one of the songs on it, Hashkiveynu, performed (partially) during an episode of the West Wing, and it sounded AMAZING (it was NOT the same cantor as on this CD). I am not Jewish and not even very spiritual, but I wanted to have that song in my collection.
I immediately searched the web for the info, got the name of the chant and found this CD. I almost purchased it without listening, when I found a different site, where they actually have rather long excerpts (2 min.) of most tracks, so I listened to them.
Boy, was I relieved and disappointed at once! Relieved that I didn't buy the CD and disappointed that I couldn't get the song I wanted (I was willing to buy a whole CD for just 1 song, that's how much it impressed me).
The song sounds very little like the one from the West Wing, although I do believe that the site where I found the info speficially pointed to this CD as having a recording of the same song used in the show. And I'm sorry to say it but the voice also doesn't hold a candle to the one used on the show - way too "operatic", as mentioned by many, and harsh and even unpleasant-sounding to me. It took all the charm and candor right out of the song (in the show, they had a much more natural voice do the song). I also agree that the choir does not mesh well with the soloist.
If anyone knows where and if I can purchase a recording of this song done by a different singer (if it can be the one from the West Wing, I'll be thrilled), please, let me know. In the meantime, I'm passing on this CD...

    5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2006-01-11

    What a voice...!

    5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Cantorial Performance.......2004-01-27

Cantor Rebecca Garfein has a magnificent voice which expresses the oft-overlooked nuances in the music she has chosen for this recording. Able to perform equally well in the metzo soprano and soprano ranges, the cantor delights the listener with thrilling high notes and sultry lower registers.

Organist-Choirmaster Arnold Ostlund, Jr. skillfully chooses registrations which enhance both the cantorial performance and the superb choral blend.

5 out of 5 stars Jewish songs and prayers beautifully sung!.......2004-01-18

Cantor Rebecca Garfein's Sacred Chants is a memorial tribute to the cultural and spiritual greatness of the pre-war German Jewish synagogue. Some of the numbers were composed by Jews on Jewish themes -- for example, Mah Tovu by Cantor Meir Finklestein or Ahavat Olam by Cantor Morris Barash. Other numbers were composed by non-Jews, but they express traditional Jewish values. Throughout, Cantor Garfein sings with love and passion in the spirit of her tradition. Additionally, the beautiful organ music is wonderful to hear for those of us who have enjoyed hearing organ music as part of our Reform Jewish liturgy.

3 out of 5 stars Good but is this Jewish?.......2004-01-07

I have to admit, it am in the process of converting and wanted a contemporary collection of Jewish music in the house. I was especially excited because it featured a female cantor. Unfortunately, I played this CD and it...reminded me of church not synagogue! Lovely for what it is though, with the opera voice, choir and organ music. Not quite what I expected.

Dub poetry doesn't get better than on this seminal disc. Johnson drops his rhymes so that they join tightly to Dennis Bovell's basslines, giving both word and rhythm greater power. More literarily and politically savvy than his peers in Jamaica, U.K.-based poet LKJ's rhymes stand up without music, on the printed page. In "Reggae Fi Dada," he wisely eschews the general in favor of exploring the more expressive realm of the personal. He takes that tact even in the political protest of the title track, a rendering of confrontations between black youth and the British police, thereby making the poem all the more harrowing. A direct descendant of a generation of West Indian writers who emerged in the '40s and wrote from the point of view of a colonized people just awakening to their national spirit, LKJ weighs the riddims of poetry and reggae and finds them equal. --Elena Oumano

Upon migrating to the Bronx NY in 1984, I began watching caribbean videos, primarily Reggae videos. Became fascinated with one in particular, which showcased celebs such as Michael rose and Black Uhuru, Bob Marley live, and LKJ.
I would say that I rented this video simply to watch The Great Insurrection video. Amazed to see people of all ethnicity stand up against "The Englan."

Anyway, I just wanted to respond to D. Garcia's morphed sense of reality for us! You need to recognize Slim!! and Until you can't "put yourself" in our shoes, so to say, keep ya mouth shut!!

You probably didn't even buy the cd and just wanted to get your point across...If you want to do that, O'Reily won't mind having you on to spead that trash!!

I am a huge fan of the Texas rap scene. I love all these guys, they are a lot more talented than most other mainstream rappers these days. People who don't listen to rap don't understand the power of this album. I'm tired of people saying how "un-original" this kind of music this is. Go listen to the beatles then. This is rap.

1 out of 5 stars to the people that have no respect for the dead..........2006-04-12

Some people have no respect for their neighbors when they are alive.

Face it. The biggest problem this culture has is not racism it's DENIAL. Denial of it's own role. Denial of it's own racism. Denial of absentee fathers. Denial that violence as a way of life is stupid. Denial that drug addiction is the drug addicts responsibilty. Denial that pimps exploit their own community. Denial that GIANT SPEAKERS blaring out of cars is damaging to your community. Denial of Libraries. Denial of simple decency to others.

Constantly complaining that your problems are a result of racism is counter productive. Black on black violence/exploitation/crime is so predictable it's standard. Chicano on black or black on chicano violence/exploitation/crime is so predictable it's racist. There are racists in every culture including this one.

Just remember that 200,000 white Americans died in an effort to end slavery. Don't dis them! Don't be ungrateful for the dead people who died for you and then be grateful for a dope who selfishly overdosed. Don't forget that thousands of white Americans marched to end Jim Crow laws.

Cliche ridden lyrics that pander to your audience is just a way to make money. There is nothing respectable about pandering.

Sorry man I'm just sick of this whining, complaining culture. I'm sick of the entire Rap culture. There are just too many idiots to sift through. There's probably some good stuff but it's like finding a needle in a haystack full of ...

These guys made their own bed.

5 out of 5 stars This is a SUC classic but who's Garcia?.......2006-03-20

I actually met with this CD by accident i found it in a store just there but enough with the lame stories. This CD is hot one thing i don't really get why it says in the track list Garcia though. This is the best of SUC with production of Thug dirt and his rhymes are pretty dope. I specially like the first track pop your trunk

      3. History Lesson Skit - Thug Dirt
      4. Screwed Up Click - Big Pokey, Mike-D, Lil' Keke,
      5. Poed Up - Big Pokey, Papa Reu, Thug Dirt
      6. Esg Skit
      7. Back Up - Benz, Lil' O, & Bun B
      8. Know Who to Call - D-Red, Thug Dirt, & Hawk
      9. I Like To - Lil' Flip, Thug Dirt, & Boo
      10. 3-2 Skit - 3-2
      11. 3-Some - 3-2, Top Dollar
      12. Don't Make Me Wait - D-Red, , Li'l KeKe, & Thug Dirt
      13. Pull Up to the Club - Darryl d'Bonneau, Thug Dirt, Xavion
      14. C-Note Skit - C-Note
      15. Raise It Up - Thug Dirt, ESG, C-Note
      16. Ready to Rock - Li'l KeKe, Thug Dirt, Z-Ro
      17. When We Ride - Chingo Bling, Hawk, Thug Dirt and someone else i forgot...
