Editorial Reviews
The Cross Movement is back and, amazingly, even better than before with the Philly clique's sophomore release, House of Representatives. On this one, the Movement continues to represent Christ and hip-hop to the fullest. Although thesquad was snubbed from a Dove last year, this album is a sure shot for next year, no doubt. If you're not familiar with The Cross Movement, then there's two things you need to immediately know about the group. First and foremost, they are all about the gospel of Jesus Christ, period. That is their platform and that is their frame of reference. Some rap crews like to talk in generalities and purposely veil their message to pique the curiosity of the listener. But these cats are not from the same school of content or technique. For them, God is not the first thing; He's the only thing. Their message is hard-hitting, unadulterated and uncompromising. The second thing you need to know about them is that they are from Philadelphia, so their sound has a decidedly East Coast feel to it. The beats are stripped-down, no-frills, strictly-business types of beats. No annoying bleeps or whistles, and (regrettably) no scratching, just basic elements of the uncut funk. This is appropriate, as it matches their
'in-as-much-of-your-face-as-possible-to-the-point-of-making-you-fear-for-your-life" type of delivery. People keep telling me that their popularity will snowball. If you ask me(G-Natural), these guys are poised and ready to drop an avalanche of hip-hop apologetics on an industry that is only comfortable hearing about God when it comes one snowflake at a time. If this won't spark a movement, I don't know what will. So let's get down to business on this album. On the first song, the crew wasted no time representing the Savior with the title track, "House of Representatives." Laced with a beat tighter than a "Stone Cold" Steve Austin cholk hold, an anthem-like chorus and orchestration string accompaniment, this joint had me wanting more. It opens with John "The Tonic" Wells taking roll, and after he does so he says, "okay the floor is yours, gentlemen make yourselves clear." At that point, they do just that. "House of Reps" showcases the talent, anointing, and spiritual authority of all seven "advocates of the theocratic rule." Two cuts that definitely should blaze the airways are "Super-Star," (The Ambassador) and "Eyes Off Me" (Cruz Cordero). The first declares that we live in an era of the human super star, while the second implores the listener to take their "eyes off me and onto Jehova Rophi." Such humility is reflected in all their songs, especially in the track "Spare Rituals"(The Phanatik). The word-play in the hook grabs the attention of the listener with the confrontational ain't spiritual; you just caught in a bunch spare rituals." And the Phanatik continues on later, with: "I tell you the truth / that me without Christ is like the house without the roof / and you need proof / we'll check the average house without doors / or no floors / no windows / just empty corridors / it's what we called abandoned / and that's the state that every man's in / unless you've asked Christ to stand in [the gap]." Another standout and probably my favorite track is, "Off the Hook" - and believe me, the title says it all. The Ambassador's flow is reminiscent of The Roots: razor-sharp, very animated, and passionate. It's a masterpiece for any MC, much less a sanctified one. The Ambassador's storytelling skills make it evident that he has been anointed to perform his craft. Never before have I heard such testimony over beats. Of course, they had to please the fans with a sequel to "Cypha Time" from their last album, Heaven's Mentality. "Cypha: The Next Day," features each MC flexing their skills in succession, all while giving all glory to the Most High. The strongest critics (the secular market) got a chance to hear the track on Philly's 103.9, amongst artists like Jay-Z, Method Man, and DMX. Phone calls flooded the station in response to the "Cypha" and their live testimonies on air. Needless to say, listeners were ecstatic and eager to hear more from the Cross Movement. Of course, anyone can hear sample songs from their newest album on their Website. Lastly, other notables definitely worth mentioning are the radio-oriented tracks "Just for You," featuring TRU-LIFE, the Urban Surgeon (who also produced most of the album), "Playa Hater #1" and "Maze of Madness," both by The Tonic. No doubt, House of Representatives is an album that shouldn't be slept on. This release surpassed all my expectations. Don't just take my word for it, though. Listen for yourself and receive the uncompromised Gospel of Christ. It was Him that died on the Cross, and now through these cats, you can feel his Movement. Better than its sequel, this cd has great beats/messages........2002-08-16
We get to hear these guys rymn about Christ's authorship of all life, His return that is to come, human arrogance in terms of the hypocritical R&B artists, becoming a human sacrifice for Christ with our lives, pointless church traditions, the questioning of those who claim to love the Lord but live otherwise, and a solid number of other issues.
These guys are the most honest Christian group to date. Call them the Rich Mullins' of the Christian rap genre. These guys are tremendous and you can certainly bounce to this cd. Enjoy.
