Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Great game - great music.......2007-01-10

My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

3 out of 5 stars Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

5 out of 5 stars best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

I really like this Cd, it's a classic, with the title track to be one of those that will live forever. I think Stereo MC's are also worth checking out for some of their other, underrated work.

3 out of 5 stars A little unimaginative... but better than I expected........2006-02-23

Bought this CD for one track (connected)... a little early 90s nostalgia.

Not exactly one of my all time favorites, but a good CD for cleaning the house...

3 out of 5 stars Good Driving Music.......2005-09-23

I must say the only reason why I initially bought this album was because of the nostalgia of "Connected" and "Step It Up". After listening to the album though, I was pleased to discover a few gems like "Ground Level", "Playing With Fire" and "Pressure". But unfortunately those are the only songs that really stick out. The rest is just background lounge music. That said, this is still a decent album to listen to - especially on a long drive. I would have given this 2 stars out of 5, but I had to give it an extra star solely on the basis that this it is undeniably quite a creative and original record.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-07-26

I love the Stereo MC's because they provide me with what I feel is missing from most other Hip Hop & Hip Hop influenced Pop and that's good musical production, a variety of sounds and instruments, vocals & lyrics that don't rely on blatant swearing and mindless lyrics about "bitches and hoes", crime, drugs, etc...

I like all the tracks except 3, and the only thing I dont like about track 5 & 13 is the female vocals. My favourites are 1, 7 & 11. By the way, if you like these guys, you might also want to check out the Fun Lovin' Criminals.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Rix

4 out of 5 stars Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04

This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

As cliché as it sounds, music does have the ability to bring people of various background and ethnicities together. Think not? Witness Connected, the debut album from the Foreign Exchange. North Carolina-raised MC Phonte, one-third of Little Brother, and Dutch producer Nicolay formed the duo and crafted the ethereally lush hip-hop album without ever meeting face-to-face. Using the marvels of modern technology, the group traded verses and tracks over the Internet. The result is anything but mechanical. Nicolay crafts soulful, intricate backdrops that draw comparisons to producers Pete Rock and Kanye West. On the appropriately titled "Nic's Groove," the producer crafts a pitch-perfect midtempo track over which Phonte and Little Brother cohort Big Pooh trade verses. Phonte also enlists a host of upcoming artists to guest on the set. The group's MC teams with newcomer Median on the emotional "Be Alright." While Median holds his own, Phonte is in full command with a personal lyric about dealing with the ups and downs of everyday life. Meanwhile, "Sincere," which features R&B songstress YahZarah, will have listeners falling in love with hip-hop and each other all over again. Connected is a prime example of the power of good music uniting different worlds. Maybe our elected officials could take a page out of the book of the Foreign Exchange. --Lincoln Smith

Album Description

The Foreign Exchange first "met" in mid-2002, when Phonte (who resides in North Carolina and is also a member of the underground rap trio Little Brother), heard some of Nicolay's music online and asked to rhyme over one of his tracks. When Big Pooh of Little Brother, lent his vocals to the track, the song became "Light It Up," and was featured as a B-side single for the group's acclaimed 2003 effort, The Listening. "Nic was sending me some of the most beautiful stuff I'd ever heard in my life," Phonte says emphatically. "They inspired me so much that I just had to do something over them." The end result is Connected, a gorgeous and reflective blend of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic soul.

While Phonte serves as the duo's main vocalist, the group is quick to point out that Connected is not a "Phonte solo album," and is instead an ensemble record with Nicolay and Phonte acting as the project's conductors. With guest shots from up and comers Critically Acclaimed on the churchy, organ-driven "Hustle, Hustle," and neo-soul songstress Yahzarah contemplating lost love over the melancholy vocal harmonies of "Sincere," Connected finds Nicolay and his multi-talented counterpart uniting artists from different genres under a united theme of good music.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you for...this album.......2007-07-02

I know alot of you are asking "Who is Nicoley", well I can answer that by saying one of the dopest producers out right now. The beats on this album are so good, you don't even notice Phonte in the background. But still Phonte does add some nice vocals as well. Don't be afraid to pick up this album. It isn't gangsta rap or hardcore rap, it is uplifting and positive hiphop. Some of the songs really have alot of meaning. This CD will put a good spin on your collection and besides its a LITTLE BROTHER CD, so give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-12

Phonte? You want more...Nicolay is on the boards and this is the first time I heard him and it was incredible. The beats are so smooth and emotional. It's some real stuff. Phonte always rapping about stuff I can relate to cuz its hard for me to relate to pop rappers with all their "hos" and "drivebys". Yeah, this is real hip hop. Hes got the voice man. Just like Guru said "its the voice"... Big Pooh sounds like a new MC on this one. But man, Phonte and Nicolay, I cant wait for the next one called:

Leave It All Behind

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Heaven .......2007-04-23

I had to write a review on this cd because it is just that good. It mixes so many moods in one collective effort. I want more if they have it to give because as Nas said it hip hop is dying. They dont make music like this anymore. Very chilled out! It never gets old and you can press play and listen without skipping a song. If you like real hip hop music and are looking for an underground classic add this to your collection.

This album is a trailblazer, good music is timeless and this meets that bar.

I like all the tracks except 3, and the only thing I dont like about track 5 & 13 is the female vocals. My favourites are 1, 7 & 11. By the way, if you like these guys, you might also want to check out the Fun Lovin' Criminals.

Jay-J must have been holding back all these years to let Migs, Papp and Kaskade catch up. This 3 cd set is perfect for the car, club and after party. Better burn some back ups because whomever you play it for is going to snatch it when you're not looking. The energy, track selections and flow is full on flawless. Rocking it out of the gate with CELEBRATE sets the tone for an explosive journey.

This is the best showcase of soulful house my ears have been fortunate to hear in a while! Jay-J has stepped up big time and it's obvious why Defected has asked him to launch a second series. The right amount of classic and current tracks arranged perfectly to take you not only on a journey on each disc, but one hell of an Odyssey when you play them back-to-back-to-back. `With Him', `Love Is', `Nervous Acid', `Trust', `Rock the Spot' -- Jay-J just keeps raising the bar for what audiences can, and SHOULD, expect. Finally, both Jay-J and his music will GET THE RESPECT HE DESERVES... And what a great value!!! 3 cds, unreleased tracks, 3 music videos and an interview with the "Godfather" himself. I can't wait to see him on tour...

Susan Lincoln's beautifully crafted vocal performance of Hildegard Von Bingen's Songs devoted to the Sacred Feminine, is the embodiment of Heartfelt love and divine inspiration. The sacred music of Hildegard Von Bingen, carried on the wings of Susan's angelic voice, will take you on an emotional journey relaxing and inspiring you as it moves through your body awakening the divine spirit within.

Hildegard Von Bingen, a 12th century abbess, mystic and healer, was one of the Earth's most evolved and visionary individuals. She is also the first composer whose biography is known. Living in a time when few women were accorded respect, Hildegard composed 77 songs, including an "opera" or morality play set to music, which was far ahead of its time.

      Product Description

A collection of r&b, soul, jazz, pop, world and gospel songs by Berklee College of Music students and staff to raise awareness of the plight of women and children affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. We Are All Connected is the culmination of a collaborative effort engaging many members of the Berklee community. A delegation of Boston women traveled to the Sudan with Mercy Corps where the group heard firsthand accounts of the violence that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions to camps. These stories inspired the group to take action to produce a full-length CD. Guest Artists Include: Meshell Ndegeocello, Walter Beasley and Vinnie Colaiuta

5 out of 5 stars Just listen to the voices.......2007-01-26

Very powerful statement by an extraordinary group of young musicians. In one song, you can hear the voices of the children of Darfur. It is haunting yet inspiring to hear the voices crying out for fear of extinction, but at the same time at peace with themselves.

5 out of 5 stars We Are All Connected ... All Music, One Voice, One Powerful release of music.......2006-11-22

From beginning to the end this compact disc is wonderful! All the colors and sounds of voices and instruments come together in a sweet blend to tell the story of the victims in the Darfur region of Sudan. Stories of hope, survival, and longing. Songs such as: Love Myself Instead, We Shall Heal, Home, and Why only wets the appetite and leaves the listener wanting more, looking introspectively, and asking questions.

Kudos to Berklee College of Music, the leadership of Roger Brown, and the inspiration of Linda Mason ... We Are All Connected is an incredible collection of music to raise awareness in support of those who are suffering in Darfur.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful music for the most worthy of causes!.......2006-11-21

Wow! This CD blew me away. I am so impressed with the students, faculty and staff of Berklee College of Music for lending their time and talents to produce this benefit CD for Darfur. The music is so diverse and inspiring too! Everything from jazz to techno to R&B, world and country. I love the way they wove the voices of the Sudanese women and children into their music. [..] Hats off to Berklee, their leader Roger Brown and his wife Linda Mason for bringing this topic to their campus, and inspiring the making of this CD. I love that I can buy an incredible CD of music, and support a cause that is near and dear to my heart. Proceeds go to MercyCorps "Darfur Fund", and I plan to buy several more to share with friends and family this holiday season. Do something good for your soul and for the good of humanity and buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Music for my ears and soul for my heart.......2006-11-20

I came upon this CD as an activist for the women of Darfur. I was familiar with the work of Mercy Corps and knew that any project they were involved with was worth my money. I searched for really effective ways that I could help stop the atrocitites in the Sudan and was quite pleased to have come upon this CD.

Well then, I actually listened to it. It's great. I mean, really great. I know Berklee is a very reputable music school so I figured it would be good, but I can honestly say I was really moved by the music. I was psyched that not only had I helped the women of Darfur by buying the CD but I was also proud to be supporting Berklee students and faculty.

As a result of the music being so good, I am going to give this CD to several people on my holiday list this year. Of course it's also nice to give gifts just for the humanitarian aspect, so it's great to know that with this CD I'll have both bases covered.

5 out of 5 stars We Are All Connected.......2006-11-18

We hear so many stories in the news about atrocities happening around the world that we become inured to them, and learn to separate ourselves from what we hear completely. We become spectators instead of participants. CDs like this one remind us that regardless of the distance between continents, there are connections between people.

Hearing the recordings of women and children in internally displaced person camps in Darfur incorporated into the compositions of Berklee's music community reinvigorates those connections, and reminds us that we do have a voice, no matter where we live. And knowing that the proceeds from the CD benefit Mercy Corps' Darfur programs makes this an easy purchase to make. I'm sending it to everyone on my Christmas list.

      Album Description

"We Are Connected", the 2nd full length album from Jondi & Spesh on indi label Loöq, is a progressive house exploration that pushes the boundaries of the genre. The title track blew up in the UK last year and was licensed to John Digweed's label for his Bedrock compilation. The album also includes the bassline driven stormer "The Sway" (recently released on vinyl in the UK only), as well as more unusual selections such as the electro-styled "Beam Me Up" and the hard yet deeply intense "Sky City."

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great music to play anywhere, anytime........2003-06-25

I live in a small town far away from San Francisco, which is the stomping grounds of this dynamic duo. Yes J & S are dynamic because it seems everything they touch musically turns to greater than gold. "We Are Connected"(active love mix) starts this album off on an awesome journey through dreamy and creamy melodies. "Cycle One" is next and is my favorite track off of the album, because it has like 30 different textures to it and grows for the whole duration. Every track is impeccable except 9, because it is not a musical track.

      5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!..........2002-10-16

If you like deep trance and good solid beats, this album is for you. If you like "techno" that is played on the radio, then stay aways from this. For the true trance fans out there, pick this up...you won't be sorry!...

5 out of 5 stars the future of good music.......2002-01-04

i hope the mainstream never gets this. very good driving music. track 2 is playing almost constantly on my stereo. all i would change is a little less of the repetition type beats that electronic music is famous for, and substitute with more change up runs. the sound production is better then most studio producers/engineers. all in all, a top notch effort. i only wish more artists could succeed like this. is that mr. hawkins narration on we are connected? i think so!

      5 out of 5 stars Just Listen.......2001-01-04

"We Are Connected" is one of the best CDs to put any party into a trance. As soon as the first track played its spring-sounding bass out of my speakers, I was constantly waiting for more. Although the album is nothing compared to a live performance from these guys, it sure beats anything else I've heard in a long time. The only thing I wish is that it was a continous mix from start to finish. Ending it off with a faster version of track one dissapointed me. They should have started off the CD with the last song. Other than that, I don't think that any underground dancer would be dissapointed. I still gave the album 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The journey of self discovery in Looq Land!.......2000-12-30

WE ARE CONNECTED is a first time introduction in a new place. A place where there are happy faces, glittery kisses and never ending bottles of water that taste like heaven. 'We Are Connected' quenches your thirst for self discovery through orignal music that is so unique and like nothing else recorded today.

Listening to the title track 'We Are Connected' for the first time (again)makes you feel as if you are an infant taking your first step. People are smiling at you and excited to be right there to see. You want to rush, run and jump into the next track in hopes it brings the same happiness that your last blow pop did. You soon realize that each phase is a differnt tune. You want to keep the 'We Are Connected' vibe as you are so overly ecstatic with this newfound feeling of happy happy dancing love. Track two, 'Cycle One' makes you stop and slow down so you don't forget to remember it wasn't the blow pop or the cutey face glittery kisses of big eye love that drew you in, it was the music. 'Cycle One' is deep with so much substance that for a moment, you're not too sure if you are scared or not.....you are not. Once you pass that phase, track three, 'The Sway' picks you up again and hugs your whole body and soul with it's beauty and flow. It connects your feet to your heart to your brain. 'The Sway' is the little brightly lit warm cabin in the dark woods of clubland. You get there and the light is on. By 'The Sway', you know you are safe with Jondi and Spesh. The rest of the way you let them act as your pied piper. You trust them following their journey for you down the yellow brick road of tracks 4 to 9 and end up full circle with the 'We Are Connected' overdrive mix that leads you to the Emerald City that is QOOL.

We are lucky, we are happy and grateful to be able to experience this time and of course, We Are Connected. Thanks Jondi and Spesh! Yeah!
