In time you discover new yet old things..........2006-05-24
His song inspired was covered by The Brothers Johnson's hit makers of (A&M Records Label) da "FUNK" music... Thank god for the evolution of music...
*notably, "Shuggie" played on stage with my Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton and his dad Johnny Otis Sr.; as well as, a host of legendary blues fellas at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival ("Live at Monterey" CD ~ Johnny Otis)... These songs are packed with lots of innovation and freedom of unlimited expression, exhilarating to say the least!

this brotha is bad.......2005-12-02
A nice companion to Inspiration Information.......2005-01-06
It's amazing that both albums were recorded when he was still a teenager. There seems to be a lot of overlap with 'Inspiration Information', most notably 'Strawberry Letter 23'.
The albums feature good blues-guitar playing. The music was very much ahead of its time and very much ahead of his age. Overall, there's lots of good solid blues/R&B here.
As a side note, I swear a lot of the instrumental licks have been sampled by hiphop throughout the years; they're stone-cold grooving at times!
This double of Shuggie is good stuff, especially if you liked Inspiration Information. I'd say it's almost better than that one because this features more vocal tracks. A little pricey though....
Shuggie--Leave it to Raven to put out such a fine reissue.......2004-02-23
Well, thanks to Raven (sort of the Australian equivalent of Rhino), funk/soul fans finally have (most of) the rest of the picture. And you only have to hear Shuggie tear through the opening funk/blues strains of "Oxford Gray" to be converted. "Inspiration" fans will be pleased to hear "Strawberry Letter" and "Freedom Flight" in context (at last).
Genre-bending and genre-blending, Shuggie Otis was a little too baroquely ornate to be called "blues." But he was also much too expressive and emotionally direct to be lumped in with the 70s California folk singer/songwriters. He had a flow all his own: experimental without being opaque, exact without being tiring, and soulful without cliche.
Shuggie was definitely a musicians' musician; his multi-instrumentalist skills link him with one-man-band artists like Paul McCartney (1st solo record), Lenny Kravitz (Let Love Rule), Stevie Wonder (Talking Book), and Sly Stone (There's a Riot Goin On). Shuggie's do-everything-yourself tendencies came to fruition on "Inspiration Information," but you get to hear the seeds being planted on this reissue as Otis handles guitars, bass, vocals, organ, harpsichord, and piano.
For the classic rock fan whose soul/blues collection only goes as far as Jimi...
For the hiphop head who wants to hear the kind of hooks DJ Muggs would sample...
For the exacting music fan who wants to add another gem to your collection...
Pick up this disc. Now all we need is a decently remastered "Al Kooper Introduces Shuggie Otis"...

Product Description
Borrowing liberally from jazz, soul, world music and R & B, Kellylee Evans' debut "fight or flight?" is an ecletic treat, all held together by her rich, expressive voice. Listeners have long claimed that her music is a deceptive drug, creating an eerie calm yet energizing them at the same time. In 2004, Evans was the 2nd place winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition held in Washington, D.C. Judges like Quincy Jones and Al Jarreau tapped this young singer as an upcomer to watch. This debut CD tells us why. With each successive note, she boldly lays the groundwork for a new era in original vocal jazz. This is a CD for any true collection.Customer Reviews:

Comes from Gospel and the Blues - but is not Derivative.......2004-04-02
If there is one tune on this disc to recommend the whole album, it's St Louis Blues. The studio version here, while somewhat distant compared to the live Montreux version, can nevertheless make the claim that Ray Bryant owns this WC Handy tune. Discrete chord changes, dynamic range and time are all brilliant. Here's a jazz pianist doing a classic blues tune, coming from gospel and the blues himself, without being derivative. And distance can be a good thing, as it is here. This album is a good listen all the way through, and required listening for any Ray Bryant fan.
Moody........2001-07-19
This one is a studio solo effort, and as usually , it's great.
It's kinda moody though. The first cut, "In De Back Room," doesn't spring to life like it does on other albums, feeling more determined than lively.
The whole album is like that. Sort of a bluesy, sepia toning of some Ray classics.
The fourth cut, "Blues in De Big Brass Bed" is perhaps one of the finest Ray performances on any album. Both sad and passionate, this piece weaves through more than seven minutes of the kind of blues that would make the Hooker proud.
There already is a Ray album called "Alone With The Blues," but were that name not taken, it might apply here.
Good stuff.

Solo Disaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-08
You can punch holes all through some of those so called ghetto beats coming from behind those 16th year old lyrics. Now you know grown up means doing some grown up things. Latocha has too much passion behind that voice to reduce herself to this nonsense. I've had this disc for a while, but never got a chance to express my displeasure. I'm a true fan I ain't gonna lie to one of my queens, this ain't pumping. Love peace and all that stuff D.
I luv LaTocha!!!!.......2006-02-11

A Texas Southern University homegrown band.......2006-11-12
Mixed Bag.......2006-02-23
"Getting the Corners," released later in 1968 than the signature tune "Tighten Up" that put them on the map, is in the happy spirit of the better known tune. "The Blautch," especially the snappy faux-ending, is a precursor to the line-dance soul songs (Cha Cha slide, Mississippi Slide, etc) of recent times. "Back After the News" and "Song For Princess" are interesting instrumentals that would appeal to the listener after a few tries. But they are not great singers. "Work on It" in particular sounds like a bad James Brown imitation and "A Thousand Wonders" sounded better when Archie Bell recorded it. "The Tornado" is a somewhat incoherent workout that goes all over the place, as do a few other tunes on this CD.
Overall, not bad for a used buy. It's unfortante that studio politics (see liner notes) limited their recorded output, but when the songs here are good, they are very good.
