Amidst a bramble of noises the Devil Dub god opens this collection by growling "Welcome to hell!," but this set from San Francisco duo Ben Wa is more like heaven on earth. With enormously fat beats and brooding bass, their musical trip begins in the electronically altered mind and branches out from there. Plenty of underground attitude--a bit calculated with dark recitation at times--dominates this delicious mix of twisted and manipulated rhythms. There's a graceful touch of King Tubby here and there, with metallic elements echoing forth like soft taffy between warm, wet bleeps and drips spiraling in and out of the cosmic landscape. "Beelzebub Dub" molds a magically psychedelic soundscape out of the Hammond B3, while "White Russian Dub" turns a guitar into hypnotic ghostly calling. Whatever the track, Devil Dub is sure to make your woofers bump and grind and the trunk of your car happily vibrate away. --Karen Karleski

    Album Description

2007 release from the mysterious Bernard Fevre (AKA Black Devil Disco Club) featuring dub versions and reworkings of tracks from the experimental Disco album 28 After. Supposedly, this Fevre character released a six-track album of underground disco as Black Devil back in the '70s entitled Disco Club, but then again he might not have. The story Fevre tells is that 28 years after releasing a cult classic, which no one seems to be able to get their hands on, he put out a new six-track album last year called 28 After. Confused? Yeah, me too. 12 tracks. Lo Recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Underground Dub Stars Comin' At Cha'!.......2002-04-10

WOW! I picked this CD up because I am a huge Buckethead fan and that got me interested in Bill Laswell and I was interested to hear what a dark ambient dub band from the mind of Bill Laswell would be like when syphoned through the guitar wrenching fingers of my favorite masked psychotic Buckethead. unfrotunaley, and this was the only unpleasent thing about the CD, he really doesn't play hardly at all. On this set Buckethead had more to do with the programming and beat of the whole dub than performing his ever famous sonic attacks via his chosen weapon- a flying V. However it does give fans of bands such as Death Kube K to kick around while they anticipate something new, which this CD is not. It is more typical Bill Laswell/Buckethead stuff. If you like Death Kube K get this CD, if you didn't care for Death Kube that much, you might think twice about getting this CD. The thing that I like the most about this Cd is that Laswell and Bucket are able to take one certain type of sound and just build around that sound, unlike most dubbers who all to suddenly intigrate new sounds to the already banging cacophony of noise that comprises the songs. Overall this Cd will definitely have your stereo bumping some major beats and makes for a fun and more over, interesting listen.

      5 out of 5 stars top shelf.......2001-10-19

I've been an avid dub fan and collector for twenty years. This was an unexpected suprise. It's a wonderful blend of the reggae pioneers sound with a killer first world flavor; all done with a seemingly effortless ability to weave a coherent spell from one cut to the next.

5 out of 5 stars I can't understand how there are only TWO reviews here........2001-04-23

Okay. Buy it simply because it's the coolest thing nobody's heard about. Or because the cover is so cool. Or because of the lineup. Or because the names of the songs are funky. Or because the reviews are good. Oh, don't care, why, just check it out. It's a deep, dark groove designed for late-night sonic mind-f**ks. Trip with this album.

If you want an idea of what it is, I'm not the guy to do it. I listen to everything from Leadbelly to Autechre, Digable Planets to Ani DiFranco and everything in between, but I have no place to categorize this. I would say, however, if you've arrived here via Buckethead, approach with caution--his guitar wizardry is kept tastefully to the task at hand: a spacey, down-tempo, evil jam. I think people coming from the area of Aphex Twin, Plaid, and Squarepusher would most immediately dig this album. Though it is not like any of those artists, really.

      Just check it out.

5 out of 5 stars New wave of dub.......1999-07-31

Having never heard the cd i had the priveleg of seeing the "devil dub" band play in SF. It blew my mind, going primarly to hear buckethead play i was blown away by what i heard. This is a very mellow brand of dub with a nice wash of electronic beats to keep it progressing. my favourite track is probably track 4.

5 out of 5 stars A very strange CD - ambient music mix.......1999-07-09

Listening to this CD (if it were not for some dubbed in voice overs) would be like listening to the sound track of a good horror movie.

If you are going for the ambient horror music mix this is 5 star CD.

On the negative side, some of the tracks sound downright evil.

Lee Perry at his weirdest. A must have album for any dub reggae fan. I first heard this album on a mix tape a guy in college had. I have always forced people to listen to it ever since - whether they like it or not.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Top 10 of all time.......1999-05-29

Lee Scratch Perry's Time Boom X De Devil Dead is one of the ten best albums/CD's of all time. Not so much for its social and cultural implications like the Beatles, etc, but purely for the enjoyment of life and great sounds this Jamaican Mad Man produces. It stays with you as a Van Morrison, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan or Nick Cave CD does.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best reggae album I have ever listened to........1999-04-07

As a longtime listener of space music and experimental/industrial, it is not often that I find reggae music that approaches the creativity of these genres. Much of the music produced by Adrian Sherwood can indeed be considered a reggae form of industrial/experimental, and this album is no exception. Combine the experimental influences with hard charging dance rhythms and Lee Scratch Perry's inane singing, and you have an album that is not only great listening but also very interesting, in much the same way that Dark Side of the Moon is interesting. Check out "Jungle."

UK reissue of the reggae icon's 1987 album with The Dub Syndicate. This release has Perry at his brilliant best, the rhythms are complex & the melodic lines within the tunes are classic Lee Scratch Perry. 13 tracks.

This and From the Secret Laboratory are different in style, but both are consommate examples of what both Perry and Dub Syndicate are capable of. If you have any interest in dub music of the post-roots-reggae variety, this is an album to own. Perry rants in his inimitable style, and the grooves are deep, hypnotic, trippy ... etc. -- all the usual adjectives apply. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Originally released as "Wailing" in 1980 on the Jah Guidance label, now available again thanks to Trojan records! "Wailing/Face the Devil" is hand in hand with "Firehouse Rock" the best material ever made by Pipe and the crew. Wonderful harmonies on top of Roots Radics crucial beats, mixed by the legendary Scientist! A Linval Thompson production, one of his best along with Meditation's "No More Friend" and "Big Ship" with Freddie McGregor.

"Face the Devil" includes classics as the wonderful "Rudie Say Him Bad", "Penny I Love You", "Who No Waan Come" and of course "Face the Devil". It also includes three tracks that was not on the original release, with rythms taken from Freddies "Big Ship". Lovely!

Two of the dubs was also included on Scientist's classical "Meets the Space Invaders" from 1981.

If you love "Firehouse Rock", don't miss "Face the Devil"!!!

2 out of 5 stars What the Devil?.......2000-10-01

When I discovered that a reissue of old Waiing Souls music was available I immediately purchased it. I expected to listen to some wonderful undiscovered gems - I was suprised. The good news is the music is engineered by Scientist and includes some key dubs. The bad news is this is not some of the band's better material. I presume the back up band is The Roots Radics. The Souls have recorded some excellent albums with The Radics but this is not one of them. The songwriting and the music both are weak. There are some bright spots, however. One highlight is the song "Time is Important." This is an awesome song and has a very uplifting beat. Unfortunately this is one of the few high points on this recording. Trojan records threw this package together quickly and it shows. For instance, The dub that follows the opening tune, "Face the Devil," is "Why No Dub," not "Face the Devil Dub." Why follow a song with the dub to a differnt song? It doesn't make sense. And, the recording sounds as though it was mastered under the muddier waters of The Carribean Sea.

My advice to those who are looking for a good Wailing Souls album - Skip this one! If your looking for other excellent recordings by the Wailing Souls but already own "FireHouse Rock," buy "Bredda Gravalicious," or their new release, "Equality," or their 1976 self- titled album which has just been re-released. If you buy one of these albums instead, you won't be asking yourself, "What the Devil, did I spend my money on this one for?" Respect!
