No Electronics.......2006-05-21

Here, Billy Barber uses the full range of electronic recording capability enirely in partnership with acoustic piano. The results are startling.

"Piano" means "soft." It's a contraction for "Pianoforte," meaning "softloud." And digital recording is ideal for the piano in a studio.

Barber's playing has been better elsewhere - my favorite recording story is his inversions of "Happy Birthday." As we learn in the liner notes, he did this as a series of tonal inversions of the traditional song in order to thrill his mother for her birthday. How long would it take her to identify the simply little song he was playing?

When I think of my deceased mother, I imagine myself playing that for her and wondering how long it would take before she recognized the tune...happy birthday, mom.

Billy Barber plays songs that sound like Gershwin, Copeland, Beethoven and Haydn but they are Billy Barber. Who is he? Where has he gone? He is a Boogie-Woogie Listz, a dancing Mozart, a Billy Joel with a pedigree -- LISTEN TO THIS DISC! All I want to know is : Where are you, Billy?? Please give us more! I don't know who Billy Barber is, or where he has gone, but he has left us , in the wake of his life, this singular, remarkable disc, clasical and inventive, jazzy and rhythmic, and it will be, forever, music that we will point to as moving and and dramatic.

This CD contains 10 original songs about the American Civil War written by Dave Mathews. As a history teacher Dave used his music to bring the Civil War to life for his students. Great Music.......2006-10-02

I am a huge Civil War buff. I do prefer actual type music form the Civil War, but I do find this CD by Dave Matthews very entertaining. Unlike previous reviews, I think this is a very good CD about the Civil War. I think Mr Matthew captured a feeling for the times in upbeat folksy way.

I will not buy a CD over the internet that I can not sample the songs first. Oh well, you lose.

These songs are not written in the Civil War period.......2000-05-19

The price is great, the audio quality is good and the words in the songs are inspiring. There's one glitch, however. These are not original songs composed and written by people who witnessed the Civil War, but are modern ones composed in the 20th century, thus losing most of the aesthetic value that one usually derives from the historical authenticity.

A misleading title; should be subtitled "Modern Songs of the Civil War." Average vocal quality and heavy on modern acoustics. Customers looking for traditional authentic music of the US Civil War can ignore this CD. Disappointing....

An excellent presentation of little known WBTS songs........1999-03-19

From the haunting "Road to Gettysburg" to the up-beat "Farewell to Ye", Mr. Matthews' presentation far exceeds his earlier efforts in War Between the State's music. I was especially delighted in "You will refuse the Line", honoring Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and the 20th Maine as well as the brave Confederates, primarily Alabamans, who charged up Little Round Top after marching 18 hours. An excellent addition to any Civil War buff's musical library.

You'll love this disc..........2005-09-12

I happened upon this disc by divine accident and it has become one of my favorite albums. I read about how good the song "At the Alibi" is and for once I agreed with the review! Am looking forward to Jason's second album which I'm going to order this week. If you're looking for a disc to enjoy and listen to repeatedly, check this one out.

Jason came to my school with a group called "Freedom Sings" sponsored by the First Amendment Center in Washington, D.C. First of all, the group was amazing! And when I heard that Jason had written "Red Ragtop" for Tim McGraw, I was impressed. But when he sang it.... Well, I cried. I hadn't heard the Tim McGraw version, but I thought Jason was probably better, since he had written it. It probably comes more from the heart. Oh, and he also sang a Bob Dylan song--he sounds just like him!! I'm now a fan of country music! Or at least Jason White. :) LET'S MAKE HIM FAMOUS!

Amazing CD.......2003-09-25

I heard "At the Alibi" on the radio and had to have the CD. Since I've had it, everyone I've played it for has bought the CD. Incredible lyrics, talented musicians and great vocals.

Lyrical Genius!.......2003-09-15

Jason White is not only an amazing songwriter, but also very skilled at delivering the songs with a very intriguing style. Some people have gotten offended by what seems to be a pro-abortion song, but that's only because they are not intelligent enough to actually LISTEN to the whole song before passing judgement and it doesn't help the Tim McGraw doesn't do the song justice. As a native Nashvillian I've heard a lot of songwriters and very few are as gifted as Jason.
This CD is a must have if you like an album you can sing with the car, chill to at home, or just be inspired by. Not a bad song in the mix.

Songs that Stick with You.......2003-03-05

This album is filled with songs of variety, yet they share some ties: an amazing bunch of lyrics and melodies that stay with you. Jason's tunes are constantly playing in my head, but because they are many that stick, not just one that won't go away (a Hellish experience), I have great respect for the album as a whole. I highly recommend it. Great road trip music!

Just Good Guitar!.......2002-06-11

This is the debut album for Gray Sargent under his name. The trio becomes a quartet for five of the eleven tracks with the addition of Dave McKenna at the piano. The program has nine standards and a fast blues as well as a slow blues. The standards vary nicely in tempo. In short , it's an appealing program that's swing with a little bit of bop.

Gray Sargent's style is very smooth and fluid regardless whether the tune is a slow ballad or fast. His style is very similar to Kenny Burrell and Barney Kessel. I have him on other recordings and his playing was impressive enough to cause me to pick up this one.

This is a cd which provides very enjoyable trio/quartet listening and is a welcome addition to my own library.
