Album Description
Debut from this Los Angeles quintet that features members of NEUROSIS, ISIS, HALIFAX PIER, and the CIGNAL. Their lush, soaring instrumental soundscapes are reminiscent of Goblin, Death in June, Tones on Tail, and early Sonic Youth. Look for touring in Europe, the U.S. and Japan.
Customer Reviews:
WOW.......2007-06-27
First it was Neurosis that punished one's soul in a daunting fashion, then it was Isis whose gargantuan riffs flowed through one's veins and mockingly flurted with the explosion of the listener's heart. Now, the seeds of both legendary bands have created what is now Red Sparowes, and may I add that this cd is utterly addicting. Sounds that grasp your throat and leave you breathless. Masochistic?? Indeed.
Oh my god!.......2007-03-15
I can't believe I found a more pretentious band than Godspeed You Black Emperor and Sigur Ros. Look at those song titles! I can almost smell the organic free-trade coffee and hand-rolled cigarettes from here. Five stars just for the size of their egos. Just imagine if this wasn't a side project. I know what I'm getting everyone for Christmas this year.
a good isis alternative .......2007-01-23
It'a alright, definently an isis sound, they helped produce these guys, but not like isis. kinda boring.
Couldn't Hold My Attention.......2006-09-22
I came to Red Sparowes (through Isis) with very high expectations, and I was not entirely satisfied with this record. Too often, in my view, this record sacrifices emotional content for pretty composition and dreamy soundspace. In many ways, this record retraces the navel-gazing excesses of 1970's prog rock.
Formally, this is minimal, meditative, non-vocal, headphone-oriented rock music. Comparisons to Explosions in the Sky are very apt. Like that band, Red Sparowes know when to stop playing, and how to use the quiet spaces between the notes to build a quiet intensity. It's just a little too quiet and not quite intense enough.
Still, I must admit that this band has a lot potential. I look forward to their new stuff.
Best Album of 2005.......2006-09-02
While most of the user reviews have been glowing, I am surprised at the handful that accuse Red Sparowes of doing nothing "new". In the limited, narrow world of instrumental (or pseudo-instrumental) post-rock, the Red Sparowes certainly stand head over heels. This is heavy music without being heavy. The melodies are delicate and each composition is carefully crafted. These nuances are even more pronounced when they play live. It is inspiring for an old fart like myself to see kids up on a stage that are channeling a much different energy than the usual trucker-hat, tight pants, tiny t-shirt world of Arcade Fire or Devandra Sufjan Etc. This, in itself, is certainly "new". What Red Sparowes do that no other current band does (and if you can think of any, let me know) is channel the early spirit of '80s goth music. Many of their songs have a similar feel as to a lot of the grandiose introductions on the Cure's "Disintegration", which is, truly, a majestic and beautiful thing. I just hope, with as much energy as these guys have and as committed as they are to other, equally adventurous projects, that Red Sparowes are around for a long time.

This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
rhythm music.......2007-06-08
I bought this for a friend after I bought it for myself. Great variety of songs. Wonderful for parties. Would recommend.
red hot and best!.......2007-05-14
of the many red hots i've listened to, this one is the best!
the music, those great catchy samba and bossa nova tunes that became wildly popular during the 1960s, are suited to each of the artists making a guest appearance on the cd.
among the highlights are the trip-hop infused 'corcovado' by everything but the girl, the dance-club happy 'boy from ipanema' by crystal waters--which also contains one of her best vocal performances--, sting's loving, pensive 'how insensitive', maxwell's calming 'security' and caetano veloso's highly erotic 'e preciso perdoar'.
the collection, generally speaking, is a great party cd and each song is treated with a great deal of ingenuity and integrity.
New Takes on Brazilian Pop.......2005-06-30
Now, mind you, I can't tell the samba from the bossa nova from...some other type of music that might be played in Brazil. But I still have an interest in hearing the quasi-tropical cocktail lounge-style pop tunes of this mighty South American giant. They speak Portugese there, you know. And are known to launch at a moment's notice into the lamabada, which is a forbidden dance.
Most of the songs contained herein were written way back in the day by Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least a few should be vaguely familiar: "The Girl From Ipanema", of course, but also "One Note Samba", "Waters Of March", and "Water To Drink". But these aren't the original versions--they're updates in a variety of styles. Some work pretty well, some will make you want to hurl (mainly Sting's take on "How Insensitive", which is droning and pointless).
Notable are: a punched-up synth-heavy "Ipanema" by one-hit-wonder Crystal Waters, jazz group Incognito on "Water To Drink", world-music-loving David Byrne and sultry Marisa Monte on "Waters Of March", the well-known Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the lesser-known Cesaria Evora on "E Preciso Perdoar", Stereolab's quirky and strange "One Note Samba", and Bebel Gilberto on "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo".
The Red Hot series, which started with the Cole Porter tribute "Red Hot + Blue", has always done excellent work and this compilation is no exception. If you'd like to sample Brazilian pop music of a certain era but you're terrified of breaking out your dad's dusty old Jobim LPs, this is a great way to see what's what.
Also the liner notes are extensive and informative, so you really get your money's worth. I'm still not clear on the divide between samba and bossa nova, but I reckon that's my fault.
Listening Pleasure-RED HOT+RIO.......2004-03-03
I enjoyed 1.Used Your Head by Money Mark, 2.Corcovado done by Everything but the Girl, the funkie beats were great, 3.Desafinado done by Astrud Gilberto & George Michael was soothing and relaxing, 4.Non-Fiction Burning was enjoyable 5.Crystal Waters' version of The Boy from Ipenema, LOVED IT!! the music makes your body want to move, it will be favorite, 7.Seguranca (Security) done by MAXWELL with that sultry soft voice of his & the music, this is a favorite, 8.E Preciso Perdoar done by Cesaria Evora & Caetano Veloso w/Ryuichi Sakamoto on the keyboard, Damn I love Cesaria's voice, she got off, this is definetly a favorite, 10.Water to Drink by Incognito w/Omar & Anna Caram was nice, 11.Dancing by Milton Nascimento was enjoyable, 12.How Insensitive done by Antonio Carlos Jobim & Sting, I didn't care for Sting singing this song, I do enjoy Sting's music but not this, he wasn't the man for it. 13.Water of March done by David Byrne & Marisa Monte was okay, but I enjoy Al Jarreau & Oleta Adams rendition on "A Twist of Jobim" better, 15.One Note Samba/Surfboard by Stereolab & Herbie Mann, I didn't care for that techno or computer sounding stuff, it sounded like the music on The Wiz when they were trying to get away from the trash cans, it will get a skip, 17.Black Orpheus Dub by Mad Professor, it had sort of a Rasta, funk, techno flair which was okay, 18.Chico Science & X DJ Soul Slinger, I couldn't get into that either, that will get a skip too, 19.Funk'N Lata's Sambadrome, was short & funky, 20.Giberto Gil's Refazenda, his voice went well with the song, 21.Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo done by Cazuza & Bebel Gilberto was nice, but the sound was off, it sounded like they were singing in a tube. I manly purchased this CD because it had my 2 favorite singers Maxwell and Cesaria Evora & I enjoyed both of their songs immensely. I am totally satisfied with this purchase and it will be one of my favorite CDs which I listen to often.
Great for Jobim Fans.......2002-07-16
If you like Bossa Nova, particularly Antonio Carlos Jobim, you will love this CD. It has covers by many current artists of his songs, as well as some other Brazilian music. I like how the liner has the lyrics in English, but almost all the songs are in Portuguese. The David Byrne Waters of March in an exception, where he sings in English, and a woman is singing in Portuguese, but it works out very well.
An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

A huge disapointment.......2004-12-01
Yes, this disc has some stunning music...about 2 minutes per selection of it. Sometimes a little more, but this is just a movement or so of each. I was thrilled to find Andrew Davis' version of The Polovstian Dances and found only a short choral section of it. It is a useful survey if you are a fledgeling listener to Russian classical music, but other than that, it is pretty useless for listening.
The true Russian spirit............2000-06-18
This CD has a wonderful combination of the best tunes Russia has to offer (under 10 minutes of course!). Folk tunes like Two Guitars and Dark Eyes add to the Russian spirit. Also a nice war-like tune by an unfamilar man by the name of Knipper. This is his only work that made it to the world of classical music. Many other works done nicely by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and many others who don't end with 'sky'. Very nice way to introduce you to the Russians. Buy it even if you know about the Russian works. There are a few 'one hitters' on this CD.

Album Description
The third full-length and first on Merge from one of the rock underground's most enigmatic songwriters - Eric Bachmann (ex-Archers Of Loaf frontman). Intricate tales of desperation, betrayal, loss and survival. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
tears in the wine have burrowed down in my spine.......2005-07-12
not quite as somber and dark as the first 2 crooked fingers albums, this third album from eric bachmann's post-archers of loaf band is my favourite of their releases (by a very small margin, as i admit to loving the first 2 as well) and the songwriting is breathtakingly achy, just as it should be. bachmann's characteristic growly voice is invariably (and justifiably) compared to tom waits or neil diamond but his lyrics remind me a lot more of robert smith - lots of decay and death and drunkeness with tiny illuminating rays of light surprising you every now and then. the incredible "you threw a spark" rocks and can actually be called upbeat, both musically with its trumpet riffs and also with lyrics that cover a break-up with positivity and directness instead of pining away for lost love and better days.
which is something that crooked fingers does very well, of course, and if that is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed - there is plenty of lost love and longing on this album. as usual, many of the songs contrast dark and light and desperation, and loss and redemption are frequent themes. the string arrangements add a fuller and more lush and layered sound than previously and unless i am insane and/or living in a dream world, there are also very strong references to "pachelbel's canon" running through the whole album.
if you are already a crooked fingers fan, you will lap up this record like a kitten lapping up milk. and if you are not, then there is something wrong with you and you should seek immediate help by listening to "red devil dawn" right this minute
The Emperor's New Jump Suit?.......2004-11-23
When it comes to music, one thing's pretty certain: people hear what they want to hear. I see it often in press releases where up-and-coming bands want to be linked with, say, Archers of Loaf, but actually sound like HOOTIE.
It seems people want to compare C.F.'s leader/singer E. Bachmann these days with Tom Waits, or Mr. Springsteen, but I don't see why nobody ever mentiones Neil Diamond. Well, N.D. isn't hip, folks.
There are good tunes here, but they suffer from a certain sameness to these ears.... the vocals all seem to be delivered with the same level of intensity, in the same narrow range, with similar chord changes, similar melodies and themes. It's fairly simple music, delivered effectively. Now if only they'd do a cover of "America". Holy cow!
This one's different........2003-11-23
This one has a different sound than the previous stuff. There are horns, it's more electric... Sweet Marie even reminds me of Put It On by Bob Marley, its sort of reggae. So, if what you loved about this band's previous efforts was the melancholy, home-made, acoustic, bar room folk sound - then you will be hard pressed to hear those things in this album at first. At first, all you will be able to think is, "Is this Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash?" Give it a few listens, however, and it begins to shine. It is truly a great album. Every track is a good one. For me though, I don't think it will ever stand along-side of the first two full length releases.
Crooked is good, Crooked Works.......2003-03-06
Red Devil Dawn moves Crooked Fingers ahead by returning to the more lush arrangement of the debut release. Admirers of previous works will not be disappointed with this collection. Familiar themes and textures but with a glass-half-full perspective on a few more songs. You hear the plucked nylon strings' sound of Bring On The Snakes in "Don't Say A Word" but with less of the tortured soul that album presses upon you.
"You Threw A Spark" and "Sweet Marie" should be surpises to most fans, with their lighthearted and joyous lyrics. You still get the somber here with "Carrion Doves" & "Bad Man Coming" but you're not left feeling as sorry for Mr. Bachmann because he seems to have left himself out of the songs this time. Albeit, without losing his stake in the compositions.
My lone remonstration would be that, similiar to previous releases, a few songs come across as "rushed". Some breathing room here and there would round out the compositions a little better. I'm not pretending to know more about composition than Mr. Bachmann (after all, All The Nation's Airports is flawless) but base this opinion on my guttural reaction.
Raise your Crooked Fingers and shout.
Junkmedia Review - Who would've guessed?.......2003-02-21
On Red Devil Dawn, Eric Bachmann sings that he has 30 years of hopes and fears breathing down his neck. Despite such an emotionally harried existence, Bachmann has turned out his most focused effort of his post-Archers of Loaf career. It seems that his songs benefit from a mellowness that comes with age.
Bachmann's transformation from leader of the aforementioned ragtag bunch of Carolina indie rock messiahs to proprietor of Crooked Fingers has always seemed sort of odd. As recently as last week, fans debated which act they prefer on the Crooked Fingers message board ("I wish time froze with Vee Vee," moans one), despite the fact that Bachmann is four releases deep into his latest project, a marriage of bluegrass pub stompers and jaded eloquence.
Not that the evolution isn't remarkable. The Archers employed uncomfortable fistfuls of guitar and belted lyrics that fomented audiences into frothing masses. The first time I saw the band, kids literally hung from the rafters of the club. Upside-down. Crooked Fingers, on the other hand, offers a quieter, more introspective experience structured around an off-center amalgamation of guitars, strings, keyboards and canned beats (as did Bachmann's erstwhile AoL side-project Barry Black, for that matter). Reports indicate that the band can kill a crowd playing acoustic instruments on the floor of a nightclub, as they did during a tour last year.
The first two Crooked Fingers records catalog Bachmann's continued evolution. His vocals, once delivered in gruff, chesty bellows (as in the Archers' "Audiowhore"), have mellowed into a flowing baritone akin to Neil Diamond's. Crooked Fingers' debut and Bring on the Snakes exhibit wider and more cluttered instrumentations, as Bachmann toyed with complex arrangements of more traditional styles of music.
Listening to Red Devil Dawn, Crooked Finger's first release on Merge, suggests that some figurative clouds may have receded for Bachmann. A renewed concentration on electric guitars smoothens the compositions' edges, complementing the steady use of bowed double bass to anchor the bottom end of the songs. Atmospheric keyboards and a dry drum machine continue to color the latest record, as they did on previous records.
While Bachmann's fixation with decay persists (the album's opening line is "Dead in the sun and covered with glue" and the closing number is titled "Carrion Doves"), his new songs are imbued with a greater sense of optimism than ever due to the use of more pop-oriented chord arrangements than previously employed. And while those earlier records sounded more folksy, with Red Devil Dawn Bachmann edges tentatively back in the direction of rock music, albeit with a more mature, softer touch.
That softer touch leaves the door open for Bachmann to explore some new territory: love songs. Two tunes on the record bearing women's names ("Sweet Marie" and "Angelina") approach the realm of ballads, something of a stretch for a guy who half-hollered his way through his singing duties with the Archers. Additionally, the chorus of "Disappear" features the plea "Cary don't cry, I'm going to disappear," which we assume is sung to a person and not the suburb of Raleigh, NC. Not surprisingly, Bachmann pulls off the overtly romantic material, relying on restrained, world-weary singing and smooth string arrangements. Classical fans will note that "Disappear" heavily references Pachelbel's Canon in the chorus.
Interestingly, Red Devil Dawn has an even lower gear. Lightly pulsing bass and plinky mandolin give "Boy With (100) Hands" a downright tender, lullaby-ish feel. Of course lullabies in Bachmann's world are just as sinister as those of Robert Smith's, as evidenced by the lyrics to the downbeat "Don't Say a Word": Those tears in the wine/have burrowed down in her spine/here they come again falling like a driving rain/to take a little piece of her and wash away/so nothing left can be saved.
Though there is no shortage of beautiful, pensive downers on Red Devil Dawn, there are some pointedly upbeat moments too, including the horn-heavy rocker "You Threw a Spark." Built around the same chord progression as that awful James song "Laid," Bachmann salvages the melody with his dry vocals and the almost-over-the-top horns. Horns also open "Sweet Marie," an upbeat number in which Bachmann boasts he is going to go kick the ass of his romantic rival.
Fans will eat up this new record, as the songwriting rivals, and often exceeds, the best of Crooked Fingers' prior curious work. Those who never got on board with the Crooked Fingers sound may find reason to reconsider, as Red Devil Dawn touts Bachmann's most focused work of his post-Archers career. ...

Mystical Magnificata of Spiritual Beauty.......2005-11-03
Richard Souther transports the listener to an ethereal realm on each and every note and instrument, with each original arrangement. While the music and words were initially composed and written by Hildegard von Bingen, a highly evolved 12th century mystic, artist, and healer, Richard Souther rekindles the flame with updated interpretations and instruments (synthesizer, keyboards) to appeal to modern ears. Nothing is lost in the transition ... the heart of the listener expands ever wider as the music of the past greets the present, giving and receiving the gift of Spirit.
Sister Germaine Fritz, OSB sings vocals on "Kyrie" (track #1) accompanied by Davey Spillane with a low whistle while the all female string quartet, Cello, accompany on their instruments. It provides a deeply spiritual peace, comfort and solace. Another track, "The Fire of Spirit," ignites a flame which burns brighter the more one hears the music. The lyrics in Latin are a soulful meditation for anyone seeking peace and joy in tumultous times. The intro is sung by Noirin Ni Rian, whose distinctive voice adds the right qualities to the sacred text. Sister Germaine and Katie McMahon provide lead vocals with other worldly adoration and praise for life and all of creation.
Occasionally acoustic drums add a down to earth natural appealing rhythm. The African djembe sounds nearly like a harp, bringing the listener closer to the angelic realm. The lyrics are in Latin, which has mystical and ethereal qualities sung by first class female vocalists. The mellow tones of the Cello quartet vibrate in harmony with each word sung in Latin. Anyone desiring to feel closer to Divinity and the Source should own this CD. The music celebrates life in all its myriad of forms and expressions ... providing Grace to all who listen.

Vision ll.......2003-01-29
When Richard Souther finished recording Vision in 1994 for Angel Records he was soon asked to do 'Vision II' which was no surprise considering the critical and commercial success of Vision.
At this point he chose to change record labels and signed a 7 album deal with Sony Classical. This seems to have played a major role in the shaping of Illumination. With the financial weight of Sony behind him Richard had the freedom to pick and choose his guest musicians. The line-up speaks for itself.
Where as Vision has a strong musical identity and is basically a showcase for the extraordinary talent of Richard Souther, Illumination explores new musical terratories.
Like Vision, it is not a straight cover of Hildegard's gospels but a musical impression of her works that is uniquely interpreted. There is more of a world music feel to Illumination with contributions from the likes of Davey Spillane (Riverdance) reinforcing this feel.
There are some haunting vocal passages and a wide and varied mix of tones and textures that give this album an almost cold and disconcerting edge when compared to Vision. It certainly requires a little more time to absorb than its sibling but as the music unfolds the listener is treated to an aural tapestry of beautiful atmospheres and sublime musicianship.
Another essential purchase for music lovers with vision.
Where's the Hildegard?.......2002-07-04
Overall, a worthy attempt, but having heard both Vision as well as studied Hildegard's music in its original, and the performance by Anonymous Four, I ultimately found this album somewhat lacking. First, most of the cuts do not even feature Hildegard's music. Sure, some of the plainsong modulations are picked up in the synthesizer meditations, but where is the substance of Hildegard's work? I do like the mix of multi-cultural motifs, which chant lends itself to, but it overwhelms the timeless genius of the great nun. What there is of Hildegard is re-worked to the point that it is unrecognizable. The one cut I did NOT care for was track 9 "Spirit of Fire" which could have been renamed "Spirit of Ennui" or "Spirit of 'I just got this new keyboard let me see how it works.'"
I, for one, like "Vision" much better - but then, I also prefer Enigma's Return to Innocence.
Soaring Beauty.......2001-05-23
This is my favorite cd of all time. I was browsing through the library's cd collection about 8 months ago when I caught the name "Hildegard von Bingen" out of the corner of my eye. Being a fan of all things Hildegard, I borrowed it from the library and took it home with me... Dear God, I was blown away! I've never heard anything more beautiful. It manages to reach incredible soaring heights without ever truely increasing the sound level, and it really is like a journey. Ok, that sounds pretentious, I know, but it's like a story unravelling. Anyways, enough of my raptured sighs - get this cd, listen to it, you will LOVE it!
Among the better interpretations.......2001-04-11
A wonderfull collection of songs. As a seasoned collector of von Bingen recordings, this has been a very gratifying CD to listen to. This recording surpassed my expectations.

Along with Michael John LaChiusa and Adam Guettel, Ricky Ian Gordon is one of the Young Turks of New York's musical theater. Like them, Gordon shuns both the accessible pop of a David Yazbek and the bombast of a Frank Wildhorn, preferring instead to write post-Sondheimian art songs. The numbers here (with lyrics by Langston Hughes, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker, James Agee) span two decades. They are marvelously interpreted by the likes of Audra McDonald, Dawn Upshaw, Darius de Haas, and Judy Blazer. Blazer ambles through "Resumé/Wail/Frustration" with delicious jazz-age wit, while Upshaw once more proves that she's a classical singer with an uncanny flair for the nonclassical repertoire. Note that anyone who's expecting anything resembling a beat is advised to look elsewhere. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal!.......2001-09-27
Ricky Ian Gordon is a very talented composer and poet, and the songs on "Bright Eyed Joy" display his magnificent gifts. There is not a contemporary composer who has his talent of fitting text to music, and the singers on this disc bring his compositions alive. Track 17, "Once I Was," will make you weep!
Incredible.......2001-06-02
This is an incredible CD, from the sparkling orchestrations which are chamber but in the way they are mixed everything dances out at you, to the vocal interpretations which are so innovative for a recording of this type...settings of poetry but sung by regular, albeit, extraordinary regular people (except people like Dawn Upshaw and Audra McDonald who have already established themselves as major vocal artists)so that the songs feel personal. There is about this CD an incredibly meaningful air...moving, magisterial, powerful...straight from "Heaven" to "Joy" Gordon takes us on an inexorable journey through life towards transcendence and he and his brilliant players and performers succeed...Nonesuch does it again...Superb! Kudos all around. Gordon is a REAL composer, with a deep understanding of poetry as well as a fabulous gift for writing words himself!
Quite an enjoyable CD.......2001-05-20
Being a fan of Mr. Gordon's, I couldn't wait until this CD came out. And I was not disappointed. The music is a cross between classical art songs and standard Broadway fare. Perhaps most enjoyable are the tracks sung by Audra McDonald, some of which were previously released on her first solo album, Way Back to Paradise, but which were supplimented with some additional tracks that really suit her dramatic voice and extensive range. Two other highlights include "Afternoon on a Hill", "Souvenir", and "Once I Was", which demostrate clever writing on the part of the composer, as well as true understanding of the texts on the part of the performers...I feel that Mr. Guettel performs well on this disc. It may appear that he does not have the vocal training that others do, however, his interpretive skills as well as his clear understanding of texts and emotions make his tracks poignant, and his voice is quite pleasant. My only complaint would be that Darius De Haas was included on the disc instead of Billy Porter, who I have seen performing these songs live, and quite well. Mr. De Haas is quite adequate, I simply prefer the power and exultation that Mr. Porter displays when he sings the compositions. Overall, however, this is a wonderful inclusion to anyone's collection, especially anyone who is a fan of anyone writing new, sophisticated theatre music.
Don't Walk, run ...run ...run ...to your stores.......2001-05-08
A huge fan of Donald Katz's "Home Fires" in which Mr. Gordan and his family are the central characters in a moving biographical tribute to an American Family, I have followed the story of this talent ever since. What I have to say of this incredible cd is nothing less then INCREDIBLE. Though there are some major comparisons to the likes of Stephan Sondheim, I am sure Mr. Gordan does not mind in the lease, but in the ened, he is all his own. Do not walk to get this cd, run to get it ....run like there is a wild fire following you to your nearest cd store ....If you don't love it, if you aren't moved by every lyric and strong and chord, then all I can say is, your not a real musical theater fanatic.
Where did all the decent singers go?.......2001-05-07
It is such a tragedy that such beautiful music such as this CD is ruined by inadequate singing on behalf of the performers. There is ONE exception to this, of course, and that being Audra McDonald. Darius De Haas and Theresa McCarthy are both excellent musicians in an artistic sense, but they lack any sort of vocal substanance needed to carry off these difficult songs. Unsupported and in need of clarity are how I would describe their performances. Dawn Upshaw must posses some of the most glorious high notes ever to be heard, unfortunately, she swoops and scoops all over the place and manipultes her vowels in such a way as to distract the listener. Since when did this become acceptable? Adam Guettel is not a singer and I never understood why he insists on attempting to sing anyway. I still remember the first time I heard "Come to Jesus" with he and Audra. He paled so much in comparison... In conclusion - if you can stand the singing (which is very hard, I still can't force myself to listen to McCarthy attempt to sing track 4, or maybe 5)then this CD is excellent. Gordon tends to be very elementary in his compostions, so there are many hummable tunes due to his repititious themes. As a fan of art songs and Dawn Upshaw/Audra McDonald, I've been looking forward to this CD. If you are fans of them as well, and don't mind paying [the price] for about 4 good songs, then have a go at this CD!!
