When New Jersey's Dana Owens adopted the stage moniker of Queen Latifah when she launched her rap career in 1989, she also assumed the regal bearing and flowing clothes of African royalty. Her raps not only demanded respect but also radiated an unassailable air of authority. Since then Latifah has branched out as an actress (starring in the TV sitcom Living Single), businesswoman (she co-owns Flavor Unit Management, which handles rappers like Naughty by Nature), and singer (she sings with a live jazz band on the concluding cut of a later album), but that imposing dignity remains her trump card on Black Reign, her first album for Motown after an unfriendly split with Tommy Boy. Her refusal to be pigeonholed or limited in any way is part and parcel of her demand for respect and makes her one of the most rapidly evolving artists in hip-hop. --Geoffrey Himes

SHORT REVIEW HERE.......2006-07-27
Buy this CD.....it's awesome
Pleasantly surprised.......2006-07-21
Although I had previously sampled some clips from Passage and Eternal, it was the song "Telepath" that gave birth to my interest in this Swiss band, and was the reason why I bought this album, 2004's Reign of Light. While I wasn't completely thrilled on first listen, I started to enjoy this CD more and more with each spin in the stereo, and before I knew it I was singing along to the songs - even though I couldn't comprehend the lyrics. There's definitely a Rammstein similarity, as several others have mentioned already, but there's enough differences in Samael's music to set them apart from the "Neue Deutsche Harte" scene (aside from the fact that they're not German :-P). I would say this sounds like Rammstein taking an experimental turn in their music, using a wider variety of sounds and adding vocals similar to those of Dimmu Borgir's Shagrath. There's also an Eastern feel to some of the songs, making for an interesting escape from the otherwise 'outer space-y' theme the band tend to stick with. I'd say my individual favorites off RoL would be opener "Moongate" - which has a catchy chorus and would serve quite well on the dancefloor, the aforementioned "Telepath," and "Heliopolis" - although all the tracks are good in their own right and are all listenable.
I'd recommend this to anyone looking for something a little different in the overpopulated, somewhat predictable genre of modern metal. It's definitely a refreshing escape from the Shadows Falls and Lamb of Gods of today, and could fit in in a moshpit as easily as it could a dancefloor.

Very disappointing album for a longtime Samael fan........2006-05-21
It's been 5 years since Samael's last release "Eternal". They've had some serious label issues that have resulted in a necessary hiatus. This has meant that my expectations for this new album were extremely high. I figured 5 years break should allow the band to come back with increased enthusiasm and inspiration. Perhaps even write a complex album to match the heights of 1996's "Passage". Unfortunately, this isn't the case. If anything, I feel this is quite a lacklustre release. It certainly has the sort of variation of sounds that have illuminated their work and it most definitely has made a progression even further away from the last release, but I can't help feeling that there is something missing from "Reign of Light". Or maybe it's just that Samael have finally moved too far from where I feel comfortable. It's just not metal any more!
It all starts promisingly enough, with "Moongate" being a really good track. I can even cope with the rap-like vocals as they work quite well in this instance. It's around track 4 (the title track) that the disappointment starts setting in for me. It becomes apparent that Samael are attempting to reach a commercial audience, which is made all the more strange by the fact that there are still no clean vocals. Basically, Samael have ended up somewhere in the vicinity of Rammstein, without any sort of dance-floor presence. Tracks like "As the Sun" are unlikely to sit well with metal fans and they are not really going to impress fans of Rammstein either. So whom exactly is this album directed at? I really couldn't say.
Now don't get me wrong, this is not a terrible release. There are many sections that I enjoy quite a bit. But I can't help longing for an earlier incarnation of Samael to raise its head. Maybe they can come back from this, but if we have to wait another 5 years till the next release sees the light of day, you can scrub Samael off my "anticipated future release" list.

ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19
Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.
I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.
The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.
Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16

Polish Sausage!.......2004-08-09
It's 2 of their EP's put on 1 CD for us Americans. 1 problem though. Apparently The Angel of Death (Thin Lizzy Cover) is removed for the Blood EP portion. (Check out the Imports) Vader grabs your attention and doesn't let go, except on the Keyboard intro Red Dunes. On the album as a whole, it great; but the problem is that on tracks 1 and 2 there is a small background clicking noise when it gets quiet. It's as if the CD is scratched. (I know its not scratched, because I downloaded the 2 tracks before buying it) This is because they were produced in a different area. It isn't that bad on We Wait, but its annoying on Shape Shifting. It is however less noticeable if you don't listen to it on headphones. The rest of the record(s) is great.
The track As the Fallen Rise gets straight to the point. (There's a Shredding Solo 3 seconds into it!) Tracks 10-12 are covers; the most interesting is Freezing Moon because of Peter's bizarre vocals. The Live Versions of Creatures of Light and Darkness and Carnal barely sound live except for the vocals. It then closes with the fantastic Lord of Desert. Why not 5 stars? Because of the lack of the thin Lizzy Cover and judging from other stuff I've heard from these guys, this is nothing! I originally was going to purchase Black to the Blind, but the cursed Record store didn't have anything else. This, my friends, is good Death Metal. Stuff Straight from Poland.
Great Metal-Great Band.......2004-07-24
Both these albums contain mountains of solos, heavy riffing, and skilled drums. The vocals are also wonderful, escaping the gore metal growls of cannibal coprse while still having a certain degree of heaviness and death about them. Song after song Vader delivers without compromise. The live songs on Reign Forever World are a welcome addition to the album, Carnal being sent to new heights of energy. The covers are also a pleasant surprise, one Judas Priest song and the great Freezing Moon performed with a mastery that it never was before.
For any fan of metal, black, death, or thrash this band will not disappoint.
They don't get much heavier than this!.......2004-03-24
Vader's latest Metal Blade release is a combination of their 2001 studio release Reign Forever World and their 2003 EP Blood. Essentially, you get a splattering of Vader's most recent work combined with two live tracks and three covers. No matter who's behind it, death metal is just plain brutal and Vader is damn proud to have that label. Rapid solos, heavily distorted riffs, and raw vocals explode on the opening track "Shape Shifting." Let's face it; you know that formula is not going to change. Vader whips right through three of their two-minute blood soaked anthems; "As the Fallen Rise Again," "Son of Fire," and "Traveler." Each track is more intense then the last. You'll feel the heat as Peter unleashes some punishing vocals that will surely open the gates of hell and release the evil within. Although some of the guitar and drum work tend to sound alike, Vader changes up the rhythm just enough to notice a difference.
Vader's lead ax-men could sure give Eddie Van Halen, Marty Friedman, and other shredders a run for their money on "Frozen Paths." How they can play that fast and hit every note is beyond me. There are a lot of satanic references on "Privilege of the Gods," and that's not any different from the album as a whole. The guitars are deafening on "Reign Forever World," and nothing's wrong with that (what did you say?). Vader's covers of "Total Disaster" (Destruction) and "Freezing Moon" (Mayhem) may be true to the original, but I really don't know. However, I never imagined that "Rapid Fire" (Judas Priest) could be so heavy and still enjoyable. The two live tracks, "Creatures of Light and Darkness" and "Carnal," are nearly flawless. It must have been a weeknight when they were recording: the applause sounds like there are no more than twenty people in the room.
Anything bad?
The intensity is all but sucked away on the one-minute keyboard instrumental "Red Dunes."
Bottom Line
If you like your guitars heavy, ultra-fast, and intense; your drums rapid and head pounding; and your vocals loud, harsh, and brutal; Vader will not let you down. Overall, the mixture of studio, live, covers, and instrumentals are a little inconsistent.
I LIKE THIS GROUP.......2004-02-09
Doc is a madman on the drums with pummeling double-bass assaults
and intense skin banging, great vocals and killer riffs and solo's
.This Vader album is probably the best yet. It's really the only one i've gotten into. This is not death-metal(it has talent in it)
if you are a death metal fan and are into Cannibal Corpse,Morbid
Angel,Deceide then you will not like this. Now if your a fan of
Slayer you will like this to an extent. But if you're like me and
are a big fan of heavy metal/metalcore and like bands like As I

SONGS: 1. My Anger 2. Seasons 3. Burnt Offerings 4. This Side Of Summer 5. Season Of Madness 6. Did I Know You 7. Farewell To All The Kings 8. You Walk Alone 9. Under A Midnight Sun (instrumental) PALACE OF BLACK is an exciting Metal project featuring vocalist Michael Vescera (MALMSTEEN, REIGN OF TERROR and LOUDNESS) and guitarist Paul Marko (NOVEMBER 67). There is more than a heavy nod to the grandfathers of Metal - BLACK SABBATH on this album. The first riff from "My Anger" determines much of the style of the album from the word go and the playing is skilful if not overwhelming. Vocally Vescera is in fine form songs such as "Seasons" show depth and imagination and strong chorus plus mature song writing. This would set more than happily on any later SABBATH release. Again "Burnt Offerings" retains a crisp driving riff with a melodic chorus passage. Wind down CANDLEMASS a few notches and you will get a sense of what PALACE OF BLACK are trying to achieve. It's nice to find a Metal band that doesn't want to hammer everything into the ground with frenetic riffing and drumming. The almost languid pace at which some of the songs canter along is refreshing as it is appealing. "This Side Of Summer" is a monster ballad that starts slowly and crashes in with a stomping riff. PALACE OF BLACK are firmly rooted in 80's Heavy Metal and are different in that they are not playing million miles an hour Epic Power Metal nor European Melodic Metal. If you fancy a change and a gearshift or two down then Vescera and Marko may well be a welcome respite.
