McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Boobs, babes, and bad guys!!.......2006-12-30
Oh, Riggs. What the hell? I bought this album strictly for the reason Zombie wasn't in it (sorry Rob). Shadowing the footsteps of the great white zombie himself, SOTE, freaking tripped over its own feet... So I know what your thinking, why the hell did you buy it if it isn't that great. Well kids, that's what I do! I buy crap! Then I come here to write about everything that doesn't have to do with it, and basically tell you to check it out for yourself, so you don't have to follow everyone else, and can stand up, grow some balls and make your own decisions rather then reading what everyone else says and decide after that. I mean come-on, how are you ever going to like or dislike things, if you're constantly taking someone else's opinion rather then finding out for yourself? (Slowly stepping down off soapbox) Seriously folks, I pop this CD in every now and then to get a little something different. How different you may ask? Well, listen for yourself. Better then any of Zombie albums?? Nah. How about better then the NEW Zombie album? Nope. So what then? Just a little change of pace, that's all. Think of it on the lines of Blood... Different people same blood. Different bands... Same sound... And to me. It's all GROOVY.
not zombie----still very good.......2006-08-31
Cool, a new Zombie album. No wait a minute........2006-07-19
At first glance the artwork on the album cover looks just like a Rob Zombie record. Then one turns the album over and the song titles look just like songs from a Zombie album. Moreover, when the cd is played I had to double-check the band listing because at first I thought I was hearing Rob singing. No actually Riggs is on lead vocals, well he certainly learned a lot from his old partner. As whole I enjoyed this album. I have been a fan of Rob Zombie for years, so I do think this record rocks. With that being said, it's biggest flaw, but yet it's strength is the album sounds too much like Zombie's work. If one is a fan of Rob Zombie's music he or she should enjoy this record.
Because of the record's close similarity to the other Zombie releases one has to compare the two. Which brings me to the conclusion that it is not as strong as most of Rob or White Zombie's work, maybe except for "Educated Horses". This not to say it's not good. This album does continue more in theme of "Sinister Urge" and "Hellybilly" Deluxe than "Educated Horses". In my opinion I don't like either album more than the other. They both have their strong and weak points. Actually, if one combined the best aspects from both, there would be one heck of strong album. This tells me that Riggs played a bigger part in Zombie's music than I thought and the two need to reunite! Only time will tell.
just what i was looking for.......2006-04-13

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

There's a lot of schlock on Broadway these days, so it's especially frustrating when a small, off-Broadway show doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Carried by the indomitable George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes in the title roles, Pete 'n' Keely should have been a lot more successful than it was, so we're lucky to have this recording to immortalize the little show that should have been. Inspired by the likes of Steve (Lawrence) and Eydie (Gorme), Pete and Keely are two high-voltage entertainers; the show purports to document their hectic 1968 TV special. Dvorsky and Mayes are fantastic as they frenetically go from clever originals by Patrick S. Brady and Mark Waldrop to over-the-top Rat Packy takes on classic tunes such as "Fever" and "Besame Mucho." As for the finger-snapping rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," you've got to hear it to believe it. Our only qualm: the recording doesn't do justice to Bob Mackie's delirious costumes. Oh well, can't have it all. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
It's Perfect.......2001-12-31
Upbeat Musical Magic.......2001-12-11
The cd captures wonderfully the manic energy of Pete and Keely - a television couple that reigned supreme in the 1960s. Throughout the album we hear them at their best as they recall their joint musical career and their award winning signature tunes.
Dvorsky is a smooth as silk baritone with shades of Robert Goulet. His rendition of "Fever" on this album is alone worth the cost of the cd. Although done with a slight comic edge, the song comes alive with a wonderful nuance that Dvorsky delivers effortlessly. You'll find yourself replaying that track again and again.
The same could be said for Maye's sparkling "Black Coffee". Her voice is pure velvet, with a touch of "seen it all and done it all" flowing throughout this sensational track.
This original cast recording has been produced perfectly. The sound quality is superb, and the inner liner has some great photos of Pete n Keely in their glamorous Bob Mackie costumes that were such a huge part of the New York City premier.
If you like Broadway - then this cd is a must have...
If you like to smile when you listen to a cd - then this recording is a must have...
And....if you like your music upbeat and infectious - then this original cast recording is a MUST HAVE for your collection...

The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11
Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15
Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.
I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.

Mr. Heath shows own great abilities away from MJQ.......2004-04-12
Since the bass/cello work of Oscar Pettiford, many have tried the same combination; Ron Carter and here, Percy Heath have been two of the most successful. The unusual sound of solo pizzicato cello is immediately intriguing and addicting.
There is a lot to hear on this date from swing and funk to deep balladry. From Heath originals to MJQ standards, the tunes here all have much to offer. All selections are very personal. My favorite thing about this record is that, unlike many other bass solo feature discs, Love Song doesn't over compensate with too much bass. The natural richness of Heath's sound comes through, which is pleasant compared to other amplified, processed bass sounds. His improvisations and serious swing, I believe, should be held on the same page as the immortal Ray Brown.
Also, terrific photographs.

Gorgeous CD.......2003-09-16
a disappointment from Hyperion.......2001-06-21
The music on "Songs of Scotland" is great--as long as you are looking for very English, semi-operatic readings of these Scottish songs.
Mrs. McLaughlin (an opera singer) sings beautifully; but in the style she is most accustomed too. Mr. Martineau certainly knows his way around a piano and as with Mrs. McLaughlin's singing, I find no fault in his playing here.
My quibble, which may well be minor to some...was that I expected much more "Scottish" sounding renditions of these songs; in this regard, I was disappointed.
This disc is OK in and of itself...recommendable even...but consider yourself warned. Now you know what you'll be getting.
