Worth the Wait.......2006-12-05

Listening to the cd "Just Feelin'It" gives you another opportunity to hear just how talented Michael really is. This cd is a great follow up to his first cd "The Bottom Line". True jazz listeners will definately not be disappointed in this cd. This cd also has a great supporing cast of well known and talented musicians. While listening to this cd, one will definately be Feelin' It. Waiting four years for Michael's new project was worth the wait.

I just had to, however, confirm their findings. This CD is amazing.
Manson has been a major thrill during the live concerts of George Duke, but this CD shows another side of Mike.
Believe it or not, this CD rockets streight in to my classic top 15, among
Songs in the Key of live, I am, Gratitude and Another Level.

When you are able to call on the likes of Brian Culbertson, Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum, Jeff Lorber, Norman Brown, Nelson Rangell, Paul Jackson Jr. and George Duke to work with you on your album, you've obviously made your bones in the music world. Such is the case for Michael Manson, on this, his phenomenal second release, JUST FEELIN' IT. There are 12 cuts on the album and not one of them is a throwaway... each track has its own unique personality and appeal, with a wide range of influences, from jazz to R&B to gospel. Co-produced by Brian Culbertson, the title track is also the first single. With a colossal hook that will have you humming right along, "Just Feelin' It" is crisp and confident, bringing to mind a perfect autumn day. Lenny Castro on percussion provides the perfect pinch of spice to "It's The Way She Moves," another track that I would definitely want to hear coming from my radio. Manson and Jeff Lorber have a remarkable musical rapport as is evidenced by the ultra cool "Way Back When" which they co-produced. Michael Manson has stated, "There are musical conversations that are intriguing and I hope the audience shares in that... it is great for musicians to communicate in that way. Manson's staying power.......2006-09-21

Man oh man!!! Now, this is how smooth jazz bass is meant to be played. This is one hot, well-composed CD, with Manson showing that his sideman days are definitely long gone and that he is here to share the "star" spotlight with the best of them! Each song has a uniqueness about it, but it's all identifiable as pure funky smooth jazz, some of the funkiest to date. Just listen to "The Bassment" to get a real sense of this artist's very essence and his funk appeal. The writing is superb, as well. You've gotta get this one!! A strong followup to his first CD.

This two-CD set collects a couple of shows by George and Ira Gershwin. Both produced in 1925, the two musicals--Tip-Toes and Tell Me More--are fairly obscure and don't boast as many famous songs as contemporary Gershwin offerings such as Oh, Kay! and Lady Be Good. Still, they are bursting with wit, invention, and joie de vivre. Based on a 1998 concert production, Tip-Toes is delicious, and several songs deserve a place in the Gershwin pantheon: the ballad "Looking for a Boy," the love duet "That Certain Feeling," and the rousing dance number "Sweet and Low-Down." The score is also notable for its spectacular writing for duo pianos. Tell Me More is not as immediately accessible (indeed, it had the shortest run of any Gershwin musical, with 32 performances), but it's delivered with élan by its topnotch cast, which includes Sally Mayes, Christine Ebersole, Diane Fratantoni, and David Garrison. Under the expert musical direction of Rob Fisher (from New York's famed Encores! series), this double set is, of course, essential for Gershwin completists. Tip-Toes, which made its Broadway debut on December 28, 1925, was produced by Alex A. Aarons and Vinton Freedley, who had been the producers of the Gershwins' smash hit Lady, Be Good! the year before. Attempting to repeat that success, they once again combined the same book writers, Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson, with the Gershwin brothers. Tip-Toes was well received by audiences and the press, and ran for 194 performances. It was given a subsequent production at the Winter Garden Theatre in London, opening August 31, 1926, running for 181 performances.

One of the most overlooked Gershwin shows, Tell Me More was also the most unlikely of Jazz Age musicals. In an era marked by lavish extravaganzas and brash star vehicles, Tell Me More, which opened on April 13, 1925, relied on charm, modesty, and an impish sense of humor. Because it failed to recoup its investment on Broadway, it was relegated to the list of Gershwin flops; because its score was largely forgotten, it has been widely regarded as a minor effort. In truth, it's a key show. As the only full-length collaboration between George and Ira Gershwin and B.G. DeSylva, it combines the delicacy and grace of the scores George had written earlier in the decade with DeSylva and the bold wit he had pioneered in partnership with his brother Ira four months earlier in Lady, Be Good! The best of both worlds, Tell Me More was a one-of-a-kind achievement.

Gifts from musical theater heaven!.......2005-07-24

The restoration of several complete Gershwin scores in recent years has been a gift from the theater gods. These two shows lack the bite of "Strike Up the Band," "Of Thee I Sing" and other earlier releases, but they have no lack of the Ira's wit and George's effortless melodies. Upbeat tuners "Kickin' the Clouds Away" and "Sweet and Low-Down" are especially engaging, and the authentic-sounding orchestrations lend a nostalgic aura. The first-rate casts seem to be having the time of their lives.

Tell Me More and more and more.......2001-12-07

I bought this CD because I had seen the concert of Tip-Toes, which I found enjoyable if uneven: great songs in Act I and not much in Act II. But for me, the real revelation here is Tell Me More, a totally forgotten Gershwin musical from the Twenties. I only knew one of the songs, "Kickin' the Clouds Away," but this score hits all the right notes, from gently melodic to flat-out funny. And the cast couldn't be better. David Garrison and Christine Ebersole are hugely funny in the comic roles, tossing out their one-liners like the Broadway pros that they are. And what a delight to hear the romantic couple on one of these vintage recordings -- in this case, Diane Fratantoni and Philip Chaffin -- sing just like a real period couple: him with the creamy tenor voice and her with the boop-a-doop flapper sound. Their rendition of "Three Times a Day," a lovely ballad with a Kern-like flavor, is, for me, the highlight of this 2-CD set.

Two restored little Gershwin gems.......2001-11-10

Although the Princess shows of Kern, Bolton and Wodehouse back in 1917 tried to introduce a solid plot into the American musical comedy, the story lines still did not amount to much until "Show Boat " set the standard. So when George and Ira Gershwin opened with two musicals in 1925, the first was based on a mistaken-identity situation already a cliché in the genre (Bolton did the book); and the second (again with Bolton, plus B.D. de Sylva) was about the Florida land boom that also formed the basis of Berlin's "The Coconuts" the very same year.

Both "Tell Me More" and "Tip-Toes" were part of the discovery of many Gershwin manuscripts buried in a New Jersey warehouse; and we can be most thankful to New World Records for restoring the scores and bits of the dialogue in a two-CD boxed set (80598-2). The music is what you would expect from Gershwin: 1920s jazzy with that special core of Gershwin genius. Yes, a good deal of it sounds like Berlin and Kern--as did just about every other contemporary composer except Romberg (who sounded like Herbert). On the other hand, "Kickin' the Clouds Away" from the earlier show seems to be the inspiration for Berlin's "Shakin' the Blues Away" written two years later! "Tell Me More" also does not shy away from ethnic jokes (i.e., mistaking a request to disguise oneself as British for doing so as Yiddish) that do not offend at all. And if we moderns grow impatient with the rich bubbleheads of the F. Scott Fitzgerald crowd, they are still a breath of fresh air after the population of "Miss Saigon" and plays of that sort.

The game casts have voices just right for this sort of characterization and delivery. The "Tip-Toes" production is taken from the Carnegie Hall Concert version and is outstanding.

This New World set deserves a place of honor among the other Gershwin Brothers restorations on other labels. And do not forget the New World complete recording of Kern's "Sitting Pretty," which (like these two Gershwin shows) did not produce any hits but is delightful from overture to Finale Ultimo.

Mad Mex in fine form.......2001-01-28

Paul Gonsalves is an underrated, underappreciated tenor, falsely characterized as a honker for his Newport blowout. In this 1963 small group setting, he shows the great lyrical, subtle tenor that he is. Yet he always swings intensely. Like Getz and Lester, he is a nice contrast to the hard bop machine guns. With Ellington colleagues Johnny Hodges and Ray Nance, and the wonderful pianist Walter Bishop, he's in top form here. He's one of the best; check him out.

Tell It The Way It Is -- OK, It's Pretty Lame.......2000-08-02

This one was a real disappointment! After loving "Gettin' Together" (see my review), I was thinking two albums on one CD from the mid-60s would be more adventurous and just plain more music. But "Tell It The Way It Is" is basically a smaller version of Ellington's band playing music that was interesting ten years earlier, in the mid-50s. The title track by pianist Walter Bishop, the album's supposed selling point, is an univentive boogie-woogie meets swing number. It only gets worse on the warped concept album "Cleopatra." Without going into the gory details, it's basically just boring, commercial soul/organ jazz despite a lineup that features Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones and Roy Haynes. I can't bring myself to give this CD only two stars because I know there are people out there who will enjoy this release. But for my money, it's better to get "Gettin' Together" or Gonsalves' album with Sonny Stitt, "Salt and Pepper."

This is a terrific, creative set of music by musicians who came out of the bebop tradition (Moody & Kenny Barron were in the Gillespie band together) but were interested in exploring ways to push the envelope a little. The set begins with their roots, a furious rendering of the Gillespie/Parker "Anthropology," taken at such a frantic tempo, it's a wonder that Barron's fingers didn't break. You sometimes hear Dizzy tear it up like that, particularly when he was young--but veteran players burnin' that hot on a bebop tune, in 1973? No! Oh, but yes. These guys were truly feelin' it.

After scorching "Anthropology" to the ground, Moody cools down by taking up his flute on Barron's ballad, "Dreams"; and, following that, he returns to his tenor for a long, lovely meditation on the standard "Autumn Leaves."

Gary Giddins says in the original liner notes that Jobim's "Wave" has never sounded so marvelous as here. I don't know about that, but it is an evocative arrangement of flute & electric piano with creative rhythmic ideas, which sounds faithful to Jobim without sounding like just anyone's Jobim. Maybe it's just that I particularly like Jobim's music, but this is probably my favorite track on the album.

"Morning Glory" is another Kenny Barron ballad, with Moody on alto this time. Finally, the album returns to more roots: a blues by Red Holloway & Art Hillery. It's sort of an eccentric blues, though, that sounds a lot like Monk, with odd touches of harpsichord and arco bass. But it all stays grounded by Moody's meaty solo and Barron's groovin' turn on electric piano. A charming end to a very satisfying album.

Organist McGriff is 65 now, a soul-jazz survivor who's been serving up first-rate funk for 40 years. McGriff first surfaced in the wake of Jimmy Smith, but his roots go even deeper, adding the relaxed swing of the Basie band to the potent mix of gospel, R&B, and bop that drove the organ-jazz movement. McGriff leads two bands here, an all-star sextet and his working quartet, with four tracks given over to each. The date is dedicated to the memory of the great tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, but there's nothing melancholy here, just a celebration of a vital tradition. Recorded over two days by Rudy Van Gelder at his New Jersey studio, this CD feels like a classic '60s soul session in every way, without a hint of artificiality or any straining for effect. From the musicians to the sound, it's the real thing. The sextet sets McGriff solidly amongst musicians of his own generation, with a riffing saxophone section that's made up of Bill Easley's liquid alto, David "Fathead" Newman's booting tenor, and Ronnie Cuber's bristling baritone. Melvin Sparks is masterful on guitar, from chunking rhythm to solos that always find new turns on familiar themes, while the younger Kenny Washington contributes spare and sparkling drums. It's a band that's built from the ground up, with McGriff's fluid pedal bass, and creamy, understated chords setting a relaxed groove on every track. "Stan's Shuffle" is as apt to invoke Basie as Turrentine, while "Sermonizing" is solidly sanctified. McGriff's working quartet--with Easley on tenor, Wayne Boyd on guitar, and Don Williams on drums--is just as good, whether playing the up- beat funk of "Us" or finding and expanding a gospel dimension in Miles Davis's classic "All Blues." --Stuart Broomer

A solid, swinging session.......2002-04-05

Once again Jimmy McGriff assembled a group of first rate musicians to play soulful jazz. Stan's shuffle is a bright opener with everybody grooving (Ronnie Cuber is especially impressive on this one). David Newman preaches on the tenor on the Paul Mitchell's superb Hard Times. The standard Just in time has been very played but Jimmy McGriff's rendition is fresh as the song is done like a bossa nova. Listen also like McGriff and drummer Don Wiliams swing on the rocking City lights. This is even better than his original 1980 version for the Jam label !

This is the real stuff.......2001-09-29

This is for sure the real stuff... this is soul jazz in the traditon of Jimmy Smith. One of the blues here is called Sermonizing which refer to Jimmy Smith and his legendary recording "THE SERMON" from 1957. I always liked McGriff.. when he was younger he might have had more aggressive sound and attack. today his sound is more mellow But still...he puts you in the groove right away and his basslines on the B3 is FAT and bouncing.I am especially touched by the first song on this CD."Stans Shuffle" a tune wtitten by the late master Stanley Turrentine .. and I suppose this is a tribute to Stanley since he died a month prior to this recording in 2000, David "Fathead" Newman plays wonderfully here..No wonder since he belongs to the same school as Stanley did.. where an extreme blues feel was an essential thing combined with a fat sound.Melvin Sparks is one of the most effective soul jazz guitarists and this CD is again a proof of that.
If you buy this CD.. you will not get any surprises BUT and hour of soul jazz played by the masters of this music.
