With his fluid bass lines, perfect grooves, and tasteful solo lines, organist Charles Earland created some of the finest recordings of the soul jazz genre three decades ago. On this 1999 date, Earland touches on those early successes, including some tunes that he first recorded on Living Black in 1970, Miles Davis's "Milestones," and Benny Golson 's "Killer Joe." He's also accompanied by some longtime associates, including guitarist Melvin Sparks (present on Earland's early masterwork, Black Talk from 1969) and drummer Bobby Durham, who he first worked with in the '60s. With percussionist Gary Fritz, Earland's is a great team of under-recognized veterans, and they're joined by two formidable younger players, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and trumpeter James Rotondi. The combination of youth and experience with hard bop tunes (Horace Silver's "Sister Sadie" is a highlight) and soul grooves creates one of the finest sessions the genre has produced in years. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars A mighty burner, indeed!.......2000-06-08

At the helm of the Hammond B3, the late Mr. Earland cooked up what simply has to be some of the most soulful jazz grooves of our time. You will NOT be able to keep still through a single cut on this CD. It's that good.

...For what it's worth, nearly every other Earland album offers similarly stellar vibes. It's the most listenable type of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Earland : Forever The Mighty Burner.......1999-12-13

I was informed this morning of Charles Earlands passing. Charles passed in his sleep after a gig in KC. Charles Earland was a one of a kind performer who put a lot of grease and energy into his playing. He brought whatever song he did to live, and gave it a driving groove. He played with such energy that no matter where he was - - be it the studio or live, you couldnt help but get into it. Charles put the word DANCE into drive and he burned. He created his own style, and delivered it without compromise... This album is testimony that he remained Mighty to the end. - - If you enjoy this album, I really suggest checking out his others as well. Though Charles for sure had his bag, and may have relied on the same riffs and licks and tricks from album to album, he had his own thing going and applied his trademark ability to burn up the dance floor via Jazz transmitors and juke boxes from coast to coast... he left the planet having forever made a mark on the soul of Jazz and the Jazz of Soul... After you order this album, you might want to go back in time and listen to LIVING BLACK or BLACK TALK as well as some of his early work with LOU DONALDSON (Hot Dog etc.) - - If you were not lucky enough to catch him alive, I can assure you that he burnt and sweat quite hard in the studio as well. Charles last albums were as good as his first (how many artists can say that) - - Like the title of an earlier album, he has left the planet.. but for sure hes done so in style and hopefully will inspire generations to come. From Milestones to Sister Sadie, you WILL enjoy this selection.

4 out of 5 stars Mighty Burnin' comeback on the Hammond B-3!.......2006-10-13

After three good selling albums on Columbia Records in the beginning on the '80's playing electronic keyboards in the smooth / disco jazz vein, followed by a five years self-imposed hiatus from performance and recording , Charles Earland returned to recording playing the Hammond B-3 for Milestone Records with the 1988 album "Front Burner". This thanks to producer Bob Porter (a jazz organ aficionado), who made the decisive phone call to Earland, as he did in 1969 when he signed Earland to Prestige. "Front Burner" has all the Earland trademarks playing jazz organ - cookin' soul jazz and hard bop, predictable organ licks and solos, imaginative left-hand bass lines using high quality sidemen in sextet format. With trumpeter Virgil Jones, Bill Easley on tenor/soprano, guitarist Bobby Broom, drummer Buddy Williams and occasionally Frank Colon on conga, Earland gives us an interesting entry to his composing world with memorable swinging tunes. The highlights' are "I Will Always Love Her" and "Gospel Time" - tune you can easly whistle when showering. Guitarist Bobby Broom is an interesting pairing with Earland on this album - an underrated guitarist with great chops and technique.

Charles Earland was not the most imaginative jazz organist out there, but he'll be remembered as a great band leader that made organ combos burn!

5 out of 5 stars Rob Klotz is right.......2005-01-25

I know Rob and he's right; this album cooks. We used to play it on KJHK's Jazz in the Morning and it's a heck of a way to get up and going. Most discs by the mighty burner are hot, this one included. Add it to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars "This thing cooks!" (Rob Klotz).......2002-01-17

I'm elated that this record is available again after being out of print for a while. Don't pigeonhole it in the 'organ-snooze-formula' category, this one's a real gem. It isn't really a bop album, it's really a bunch of upbeat jazz-inflected R&B jams that feature the organ, but each melody instrument gets a solo turn here and there. The sidemen on the date are a perfectly-blended collection of guitar, sax, and rhythm, and they (and terrific tunes) make this a winner. There are several upbeat tracks and a couple of slow-burners, but overall the songs are pretty strong, and in my opinion that's the key to making a solid record. It's an excellent recording, and the only weak point is the lame 'Moonlighting Theme' cover, which is just a lousy song. But don't hold it against this record. This is very-well executed, soulful, instrumental groove music, and it's just plain fun. If you like instrumental jazz and/or r&b, give this one a chance. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 20 Hours of Dvorak at a Bargain Price.......2004-08-03

This 17-CD set collects together in one box all the published orchestral works of Antonin Dvorak. It's neatly done: each CD is in a paper envelope and there is a 51-page booklet (with knowledgable and helpful notes for each disc) all fitted into a cardboard box no thicker than that ordinarily used for a two-CD opera recording. All this music has been issued previously on separate discs or sets by Naxos and most of it is, if I'm not mistaken, still available that way. But this collection is one easy way to scoop up all of Dvorak's orchestral music at once. There is much music here that is almost never heard, certainly not in the concert hall and even on CD. For instance, I cannot recall ever seeing a recording (and I know I've never heard in performance) Dvorak's 'Intermezzi.' And the rarely-heard 'Legends' are nicely done here by Stephen Gunzenhauser and the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. Of course, the name of the orchestra tells you something: some of these performances were recorded before the breakup of Czechoslovakia into Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Yes, some of the recordings go back to the late 1980s. No matter - the sound is quite acceptable throughout.

There are numerous participants in these recordings, many of them orchestras in the Czecho-Slovak area, as well as the Polish National Radio Orchestra, the Russian Philharmonic and even London's Royal Philharmonic (in a smashing performance, with Maria Kliegel, sure one of our best current cellists, in the Cello Concerto). Conductors include Gunzenhauser, Antoni Wit, Camilla Kolchinsky, Dmitry Yablonsky, Michael Halasz, Zdenek Kosler, Libor Pesek, and Robert Stankovksy.

Obviously one wouldn't buy this set for the most familiar Dvorak pieces - the 'New World' Symphony, the Cello Concerto, the Slavonic Dances - if that was all one was interested in. There are too many fine performances of those already on the market. But how many of you have recordings of poorly known but top-drawer works like the 'Czech Suite,' the 'American Suite,' (it is fashionable to dismiss this suite, but it's actually one of Dvorak's best), or some of the orchestral music from his many operas--overtures to 'King and Charcoal Burner,' 'The Jacobin,' 'Kate and the Devil,' 'Rusalka'? All of these, and more, are here. I recently returned from a trip and the only music I took along was this box of Dvorak. I never got sated, or bored, by it.

I was also quite taken by the performance of one of my favorite pieces by Dvorak, his 'Wind Serenade,' here played by the Oslo Philharmonic Wind Soloists. And there are marvelous performances by Gunzenhauser and the Polish NRSO of 'The Noon Witch,' 'The Golden Spinning Wheel,' and (a particular favorite of mine) 'The Wild Dove.'

And then there's the super-bargain Naxos price. This is an easy recommendation for the music lover in the market for this specific collection of music.

    Album Description

"With each visit to Chicago ... Joey DeFrancesco seems to attain another, still-more-remarkable degree of technical fl uidity." -- Chicago Tribune "Joey DeFrancesco is rightfully known as an incredibly talented organ player. He's got an array of solid CDs that document his rise to the top. He can fi t into any setting, from hard bop to the electronic funk of 1980s Miles Davis. He can swing a room of lead balloons ... He's had the audacity to usurp his idol, the legendary Jimmy Smith, atop annual critics' polls ... [and] critics and observers say he's responsible for the re-birth of the Hammond B-3 and organ music's place in jazz." -- All About Jazz "The music of Joey DeFrancesco--an important force in the revival of the Hammond B-3 organ as a jazz instrument--runs the gamut from soul-jazz and bluesy grooves à la Jimmy Smith to hard bop to the more advanced modal style of John Coltrane disciple Larry Young."-- All Music Guide "No less signifi cant in the story of Joey's ascendancy is the ability he has shown to create excitement. The tension he is capable of building brings back to mind a tradition that began some fifty years ago, when Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts began stirring up audiences around the country." -- Leonard Feather

    · Combining monstrous chops with a fl air for showmanship and an unquenchable urge to burn, Joey DeFrancesco almost single-handedly put the Hammond B-3 back in the public eye. Today, organ afi cionados regard him as the "baddest B-3 burner in the business." a claim supported by his fi ve consecutive Down Beat Critics Poll Awards. · With over twenty solo releases and historic associations with legends such as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvin Jones, and John McLaughlin, DeFrancesco's place in the idiom's history is cemented. · Joey DeFrancesco has come a long way since All of Me, his recording debut as a leader made in 1989 as a fresh-faced seventeen-year-old. From the get-go, the Philadelphia native established his credentials with virtuoso technique and an innate soulfulness that he brought to bear on the hulking Hammond B-3 organ. · Through the 1990s, DeFrancesco was widely recognized as spearheading a renewed interest in the Hammond organ, an instrument that had fallen out of favor among musicians and the public since its golden period during the 1960s and early '70s.

I am not condoning drug use by any means, but the way you consume this album will greatly change your opinion of it. Nosdam's fourth solo album is also his most coherent and streamlined. The samples he selects are used to embellish his own productions rather than create new songs and they are as varied as "Donkey Kong" to "Titticut Follies" to "Night of the living dead." The entire album seems to build up to the Patton collaboration "11th Ave Freakout Pt 2" which oozes and bubbles along wonderfully then crawls back down to nonsense production like "upsetter". The album does work, but it's nowhere near as interesting or wild as "No more Wig for Ohio" or "Plan 9" or even the beat's he's made for Peeping Tom or Sage Francis. The album as a whole is forgettable but don't you dare sleep on tracks like "Untitled Pt. 1, 11th Ave Freakout Pt.2, or Flying Saucer Attack."

        5 out of 5 stars www.undressmerobot.com review.......2006-06-22

        Loopy Goodness!

Odd Nosdam, former member of the crazy experimental atmospheric hip-hop group cLOUDEAD, gives us yet another solo album. His third try finally hits the mark, molding lotsa sounds together to create one great sound.

If you are at all familiar with Anticon Records releases, you won't really be surprised by this album's sound. However, if you've never heard of cLOUDEAD, Why? or Themselves, then boy are you in for a treat.

What these guys do is they make hip-hop really weird and atmospheric-like. They fill in the spaces between the beats with fuzz and loops. They use really random samples to enhance their music. Etc. This album gives a great example of these random samples being used correctly.

Other Nosdam solo albums were good, but just like Why? and cLOUDEAD, they could get kinda too weird sometimes. Thankfully, both Nosdam and Why? made their albums more cohesive and accessible in 2005. They also made a bunch of songs on each album catchy as hell.

You'll see what I'm saying when youre listening to Burner and you get the the songs "Untitled 1," "Untitled 3," and "11th Ave. Freakout pt. 2." My gosh, these are GREAT songs. Especially Freakout. It's got to be one of my favorite songs of last year...(sorry, can't talk now...am listening to Freakout pt 2...)

        Ahem. It's over.

Not to say that the music doesn't get kinda freaky on this album (try "Cloudead" or "Gun") - it just gets less freaky less frequently, that's all. It's also kind of cool that he brings people like Dosh (electronica/atmosphere), Jessica Bailiff (slow and dark music), and Andrew Broder (guy from Fog, similar to the Anticons) into the production of this album. It paid off.

I'll end this by saying the album can get quite mezmorizing at times. So if you want to get mezmorized by at least 4 songs, buy Burner.

        3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars - Expecting more..........2006-04-15

Somewhat disappointing (debut?? no...) album from Nosdam, who in my opinion, did a better job with No More Wig For Ohio and his very creative Le Mix Tape Deluxe albums. Not a failure, but Burner is very much a disjointed album nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars totally not hiphop, very busy but also very ambient,ok i said it.......2005-09-27

i must agree with the first review, this isn't hiphop. and for me thats just fine.don't get me wrong, i love my daedelus, dabrye, and the very talented scott herren, but only when it's more sound, beat collage no rap-n-rymn guest vocals.not that i even consider this close to those artists. like i said,i have too agree with the first review, this is different and dead on about the vocal useage and close on the lo fi minimal flow but i really don't like to compare or pigeonhole a new artist or project because just like anything new with experimental process be it music, art, writing etc. just because i do all the above and really have no desire for vocals in song verse unless it's like this or sampled to flow with the beat.so again i think the first review pretty well sumed it up,very good ear.i know, this is what i do.

4 out of 5 stars like sigur ros, but with beats.......2005-08-12

you have to be in the mood for something like this, i think. it borders on being "ambient" at times, and i hate the word "ambient", so that's actually a good thing here. i was not familiar with this guy beforehand, but knowing the anticon collective/label, i expected the experimental factor would be through the roof.
it was not as offbeat as i thought it might be, and that's a good thing. i was afraid it'd get too arty and i'd lose interest, but this has enough happening to keep you hooked. some songs are merely interludes, others are quuite lengthy, and this is, more or less, an instrumental record. there are sampled voices, and there may even be some genuine vocals, but all are used more as instruments, and less as tool to deliver a story, so make of that what you will.
the only thing this kept reminding me of was the icelandic band Sigur Ros. there are similar sounds alot of the time, and the tempo is about the same. this strikes me as a record that is as close to hiphop as most sigur ros fans would get. that said, this certainly isn't what i'd call a hiphop record, no matter how far one might stretch the definition to avoid pidgeonholing hiphop. it's more a view into a dj's cluttered, collaged, dark heart. i get the feeling that this guy could take any sound he was a fan of and incorporate it into his work, and it would all feel at home. and that honesty alone is plenty refreshing.

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent Pop-Rock.......2007-02-25

This is Robin and Phil (singer and drummer) from the Gin Blossoms' post-Blossoms effort. This CD came out in '99, and I was a little late getting it, but I'm a huge Gin Blossoms fan, and this does not dissapoint. Pretty similar to the Blossoms last record, perhaps a little more aggressive? Anyways, near perfect pop-rock. Don't player hate, get this.

3 out of 5 stars It's NOT the Gin Blossoms.......2004-11-12

This wasn't what I expected coming from 2 of the members of the Gin Blossoms. Actually, I heard that the other member of the Gas Giants was a member of the Gin Blossoms way back in the day. Anyway... the Gin Blossoms put out incredible albums. Generally, there aren't many bad tunes on their cds. But the Gas Giants couldn't pull that off. "I hope my kids like Marylin Manson" and "Quitter" are really good songs. But the rest of the album is average at best. It was sort of a filler during the time when the Gin Blossoms had broken up. Hearing Robin's voice and Phil's beats was great but it lacked Bill's bass lines. But hey, they're not supposed to be the Gin Blossoms so I'll cut them some slack.
As a side note.. what the heck is with the name "Gas Giants" anyway????????????

          5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD!.......2004-07-11

Many of these previous reviews hit it on the nail. ROBIN has a wonderful voice and makes this project, POPPIN' WHEELIES and now recording with the GIN BLOSSOMS again....reason to BUY this and the other ROBIN WILSON CDs! A CLASS act!

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC ROBIN!! NOW, DON"T FORGET THE POPPIN WHEELIES!!.......2003-09-19

Always been a Robin Wilson fan, as it seems he was the focal point of both the much-loved Gin Blossoms and his followup band here, the Gas Giants. His vocal style is just CLASSIC powerpop, and here, Robin is in VERY fine form. I just love the Gin Blossoms records, and their mix of great Big Star-ish powerpop, jangly REM/Byrds riffs, and a drop of alt-country for flavour.

Now, I love harder-edged powerpop too, like Cheap Trick, and here, on this flat-out FANTASTIC Gas Giants record, Robin and his pals seem to merge Robin's trademark vocal stylings of his Gin Blossoms days, with more of a Cheap Trick-ish setting, and it totally works. It's like the Gin Blossoms live attack but in the studio. And the reason it works is cuz of Robin's spot-on powerpop songwriting and pure passionate yet understated vocals, plus their sense of fun. Robin is just great and he seems to not be able to do any wrong moves, classic!!

There are at LEAST 3 classic tunes here: "In Between Two Worlds", "Quitter" and "Tonight Won't Let Me Wander", and all the others are almost in the same excellent realm. I also rally dig "Circus Of Stars" and the way it changes form mid-song without losing any melody or momentum, quite inventive really, even genius.

Now, here's a tip: there IS a SECOND Gas Giants record out, but not under that name, but the POPPIN WHEELIES!! They sell it here on Amazon.com, but no one seems to know about it here, and that's a shame, because it's CLASSIC ROBIN (Dan and Phil AND Scotty Johnson are on there too)!! It's Robin + his pals doing a Gorillaz-like project, aka a CARTOON, but it's still the same voice and style, like classic Gin Blossoms, the Gas Giants edge, just more powerpop sugar piled on, a VERY good thing. It was produced by Robin, most of the tunes WRITTEN by Robin, along with 3 Tommy Keene covers (attention powerpop enthusiasts), including a killer "Places That Are Gone"!! Imagine ROBIN WILSON SINGING "PLACES THAT ARE GONE" (with Scotty Johnson on lead guitar), and believe me, it's as drop-dead amazing as you would imagine. TOTALLY cool!! Sooo, order this Gas Giants record AND the Poppin Wheelies CD (and Jesse's solo record, "Tunes Young People Will Enjoy"), and you are set!!

Robin rules, what can I say?? Helluva nice guy too...

          5 out of 5 stars FBTBB Rocks! 5 Stars!!.......2001-02-21

As a longtime fan of Gin Blossoms and Robin Wilson, I bought the CD as soon as it came out. I LOVE it! I think it has a great diversity of styles; a cool mix. Great rockers, classic pop tunes, everything a music lover can want. Robin's impeccible vocal style is in fine form. I give FBTBB 5 stars!
