5 out of 5 stars Classic Thrives 30 Years Later and Beyond.......2007-05-13

I fell in love with "Don't Ask My Neighbor" as a teenager; "Flowers" followed; "The Keys to My Heart"; many followed. Uplifting without being sappy, suffused by gospel influences, unbelievable harmonies, the Emotions are a huge influence on soul and their songs leave a stamp that will forever move and warm the heart.

5 out of 5 stars The Emotions.......2006-08-29

Jeanette, Wanda, Sheila, and Pamela Hutchinson...Song Birds...Blessed by God...Unadulterated Harmony...Their songs mattered back in the day and today they still matter. Music that can take you away from everyday hustles and bustles - to a place that makes one long for the days when music had meaning: "Best of My Love, Flowers, Me For You, Don't Ask My Neighbor, Keys to My Heart, and Walking the Line"...all can make even the stoniest heart want to take a whack at love. I often play their songs and immediately my home fills with serenity...as if I am laying before a flickering fireplace on a winter storms day. I cannot say enough about these women (Wanda, Shelia, and Pamela/Jeanette) and their incredibly gifted voices. I highly recommend this and all other CDs of The Emotions, for all music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Near-Perfect Collection of the Most Durable Female Group.......2006-03-29

My only complaint with this collection is that "WHAT DO THE LONELY DO AT XMAS" was not included! This is what a female group sounds like when they're not all sexed-up, hyped-up, with 3-ton egos getting in the way. The Emotions still perform to this day with the original line-up; no running off chasing solo superstardom. Maybe it was because they were family.

5 out of 5 stars 20 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH.......2005-09-24

Highly recommend this CD. It takes me back in the Day.....70's - 80's. These voices are not doctored up in the studio....they really can sing. Buy this CD......it has all the Hits!!!! 20 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH!!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Emotions.......2005-09-10

This CD brought back so many happy memories of the late 70's and early 80's. would reccomend to anyone and everyone

4 out of 5 stars 'Emotions' Runs High and Shows Mariah's Vocal Range To Great Effect.......2007-07-07

Not one to contently bask in the glow of her burning fame in the early 1990's, Mariah Carey grabbed her lunch pail and quickly churned out a very enjoyable follow-up to her debut smash 'Mariah Carey'. With the enormous success of her first CD, it was an intimidating act for any artist to follow it up. But she succeeds admirably with 'Emotions'.

It shows Mariah was no fluke, displaying notes and pitch-perfect vocals that even today very few female singers can match. But not all the songs are keepers. I usually play only the first 5 songs and skip the last 5. My favorite is still 'Make It Happen'. The power and range Mariah displays on this track is remarkable. She pierces the heavens with her high notes and enormous lung power. I think Mariah really sings this song like she means it because she's writing the song from personal experience to not give up on her dreams of 'Making It'.

I think Tommy Mottola used 'Emotions' as a follow-up CD to spotlight Mariah's voice more so than the songs themselves. You can hear every part of Mariah's vocal range in the choice of songs on this CD. Obviously her upper range gets more of a workout on this CD than any other one in her entire Sony/Virgin/Island catalog. I think 'Emotions' was released as a vehicle to show her vocal chops and it succeeded in every way.

I wouldn't say the quality of songs is right up there compared with her debut CD or later ones (especially 'Daydreams'), but her vocal high register has never sounded better. Keep that tea kettle whistling, Mariah !

5 out of 5 stars This hasn't aged at all.......2007-01-21

While never a mega-fan of Mariah's, I was bowled over by her voice, the fact that she wrote her own songs, and that she released another album full of strong material just a little over a year after her debut. Some folks would have suffered creative burnout, but Mariah was just getting started.

I bought a copy of her self-titled 1990 debut, but I never did get around to owning a copy of "Emotions" (something that's going to change very soon). I don't why because I remember "Emotions," "Can't Let Go" (which, as much as I roll my eyes over love songs, has one of the prettiest melodies I've ever heard with a love song), and "Make It Happen" getting constant radio airplay in 1991 - and I enjoyed those songs each and every time.

Her lyrics were poetic and struck a chord with the then-teenager me, and her sound, while pop, had strong soulful overtones. She helped continue breathing life into a stale music scene and that feeling still resonates with me a little over 15 years after its release.

It can't be said enough that "Emotions" is classic 90s, is a great addition to the CD collection, and is Mariah at the top of her game.

And, best of all, the album's sound doesn't sound aged. - Donna Di Giacomo

4 out of 5 stars Mariah Carey Causes Emotions: 4-4½ stars.......2006-07-26

As Mariah Carey released her second album in 1991, an enormous pressure laid on her shoulders to follow up the success of her debut album. Despite the fact that sales of Emotions did not reach the same level as Mariah Carey, it still manage to do extremely well, selling over a whopping 10 million copies. Not bad for a sophomore album!

The title-track Emotions was released to audience as the lead single, providing listeners with a contagious pop beat. The song displays Mariah's high pitch notes and awesome background vocals which include Trez Lorenz and David Cole. And You Don't Remember is a superb ballad where Mariah's pleading voice belts out how her lover does not remember the love, they shared. The chorus is a delight to listen too - simply wonderful. My favourite song on the album is up next; the splendid Can't Let Go. It is no wonder that many consider it among Mariah's best ballads to date. Released as a single, the groovy Make It Happen got stuck at the no.2 position, I recall. However, the teasingly song is a wonderful treat. The overall message of the song: You should never give up, work hard and your dreams will come true in the end. If It's Over, a collaboration between Mariah and Carole King, has a taunt of a jazzy mood to it. Mariah Carey belts out the chorus powerfully. Once again, I prefer the Unplugged version - however, this is purely a matter of taste.

You're So Cold starts of with Mariah's praticing her vocal cords, functioning as a build-up to the actual song. The lyrics are a tad annoying, yet the song is still quite joyous. Albums tend to get weaker at the end, which is also the case with Emotions. To Be Around You, Till The End of Time and The Wind are likeable songs, however they do not hold up well against the rest of the album's excellent songs. The ballad-like So Blessed is another highlight of mine. The dreamy melody culminates with the more aggressive chorus especially the belting of the words ''You are my heart'' followed by the softer ''My everthing'''.

Emotions is one of Mariah Carey's best studio-albums, in my opinion. The combination of brilliant pop ballads and excellent up-tempo songs are clearly present on the album. If you are a big fan of Mariah's poppier songs or crafted pop songs in general, Emotions will surely be a safe bet. The only complaint I have with the album is that some of the material is a tad weak compared to the brilliant songs, which are to be found on Emotions; however, this is hardly abnormal. Emotions is a very solid effort and a better album than Mariah's debut.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-02-18

Mariah Carey burst onto the music scene with her fantastic self-titled debut album, and followed it up with her second album "Emotions". Essentially "Emotions" is in the same mould as her first album - beautiful vocals, heartfelt lyrics and an emotional connection with every songs.
Standouts in this album include:
"Emotions" - a good dancing track that features Mariah's piercing vocals.
"Can't Let go" - a beautiful ballad. One of Mariah's best songs
"Make it Happen" - A description of Mariah's life prior to becoming a superstar. Very catchy and uplifting
"The wind" - Very last track of the album. Mournful, breathtaking vocals combined with Mariah's sombre voice. Truly Phenomenal
Emotions is a truly magnificent album, featuring a wonderful collection of songs, each one a true delight to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Angels must sound like this..........2007-06-15

The Emotions, with the help of the elements, Earth Wind & Fire, produced the most compelling female vocal harmony group record of the 70s, The Jones Girls came in a close second... Their voices soar and their harmonies are beautiful. "Best of my Love" & "Don't ask my neighbors" was the hits that got a lot of airplay back in those classic days of Soul music. The whole CD is great and totally positive in the messages of love & happiness. This is definitely one for the classic soul collectors.

3 out of 5 stars Great Album, Great Songs, But a Terrible Re-Master.......2007-02-18

This CD sounds like it was recorded with a sock over the microphones, and sounds muffeled and there is an extreme loss of the midrange on the CD. Until they re-master this, I'd buy the record and convert it digitally if you know how, using free software.

5 out of 5 stars "Emotions breakout album".......2007-02-05

In the summer of 1977 the Emotions came out with their second Maurice White produced album and from the start we get the r&b/dicso smash "Best Of My Love" which went number one r&b and pop. This song became their trademark song which is sung by lead singer Wanda Hitchinson and was played in disco's all across the country. This albums is flawless and you can let it play all through but my personal favorites are "Don't Ask My Neighbor","Blessed", and "Rejoice" which are all the last three songs on the album respectively. The second single "Don't Ask My Neighbor" with its laid back and sexy melody was also a big hit off this album, but the best song has go to be the inspirational "Blessed" with its its back and forth tempo and another stunning lead by Wanda showing off her great vocal range on the vamps. The production by Maurice(who also helped out on vocals) and co-producer Clarence McDonald is top notch and the song arrangements are all done by Tom Tom 84, with key members of Earth Wind & Fire(which include bassist Verdine White and drummer Fred White, and guitarist Al McKay) supplying their excellent musicianship along with other great studio musicians of the era. Some of these songs could have been done by EWF which is really not a bad thing considering the band was at a peak moment in their careers creative wise. One of many albums the Emotions collaberated on with Maurice White and their most popular, considering its the only one available on cd. A sure keeper and a must have along, but still waiting on the previous album Flowers to be release on cd which was also great.

4 out of 5 stars Girl Groups - Take Notice !!.......2006-03-29

If you're looking for a blue-print for a sucessful girl-group, then vocally you need to start with this album. The songs are upbeat and positive without being too preachy or sugary. The vocals are impeccable. En Vogue, Destiny's Child, Xscape, and SWV probably were schooled by the superb harmonies of this classic release! I highly recommend: "BEST OF MY LOVE", "DON'T ASK MY NEIGHBOR", and "A FEELING IS"

5 out of 5 stars The "Magnum Opus" of Girl-group Soul.......2002-04-05

Along with Love Unlimited, the Emotions defined girl-group soul harmonies in the 1970's. "Rejoice" is the Hutchinson Sisters pre-eminent work, with harmonies as relaxing and refreshing as a Key West sunset.
Teaming with Maurice White (Earth Wind and Fire) at his creative peak, the Emotions blend spirituality and romance in a way that puts Prince to shame. Whether uptempo (the classic "Best of My Love"), sultry ("Don't Ask My Neighbors", which should be required listening for any female R&B singer"), or from the choir to the masses ("Blessed", a beautiful appreciation of life's gifts), the Emotions were at the top of the game when this album was released in the mid-70's.
The fact that this album is available on CD speaks volumes for it's quality, and freshness, 25 years post-release. Much of the classic r&b of the 70s remains unreleased, or available as import only. Kudos to Kalimba/Columbia for seeing that new generations can hear the finest three voice harmonies of the 70s.

3 out of 5 stars Good final album just before the Enz.......2007-04-24

Although "Conflicting Emotions" doesn't quite hold up to the band's best albums ("Corroboree", "True Colours", "Time & Tide", "Frenzy" and "Mental Notes"), the highlights are among the best songs that Tim and Neil Finn wrote. "Message to My Girl" is one of Neil's best ballads with a thick, rich melody and emotionally naked lyric. "Bon Voyage" the closing track by Tim is bitter-sweet as he had already made the decision to leave the Enz for a solo career.

I'd suggest picking up the remastered version as the album sounds much, much better than the previous CD release. Although there are no bonus tracks on this release (which is a surprise I would have thought that "Next Exit" would have been put on here but it shows up on "See Ya' Around" the last Enz studio album when Neil fronted the band), we do get the original lyrics and photos of the band. I'm disappointed that we didn't get any liner notes discussing the final album to feature Tim as leader of the band (although it's clear he was ceding leadership to Neil as Neil wrote most of the material on the album).

Bonus live tracks would have been nice here as well but we don't get any which really surprised me. Either way, this edition is the one to go with because Eddie Rayner's remastering gives the album a much warmer, richer sound with better detail and, near as I can tell, Rayner doesn't compress the heck out of the music to make it sound louder so the dynamic range is very good on this as well.

4 out of 5 stars This album is good, but alaska! is even greater.......2005-02-26

This album is above all things, quite beautiful. It treads the lines between, folk and rock, melencholy and aggression, love and apathy, and in doing so, forces the listener to actually listen, becoming an active partner through the songs.
Songs such as "Broken", with the haunting attrative voice of Russell Pollard making you want save him, and "In My Time" in which the cruchy guitar and powerful lyric make you want to fight the rising tide. Almost all the songs have a heart and direction lacking in most contemporary bands. I would recommend this album to almost anybody.
But beyond the album, i had the oppertunity to have seen them live on more than one acation and i belive that they are the best live band around in which no one knows of yet, and i say yet because at several of these shows, they played only "new" songs from their up and coming album, "Rescue through Tomahawk".
These songs hold a wieght and power that shatter you. Songs like the beautiful heart wrenching "Surrender", which, start of slow and gradually build to an emotion high of love and need, "Krystal Korpse" with it's serpentinesque jangle and spook house feel, and "Real is your Control", which i believe will be a big hit for them in the future.
So in review. Buy Emotions and Be on the Look out for Rescue Through Tomahawk, which will be one of the best albums of 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for Alaska!.......2003-04-08

I'm from Germany and it's a pity this CD isn't out over here, it's like... exactly what's missing!
Have a listen and then go and get it :-)

    4 out of 5 stars Nice debut.......2003-02-20

I recommend buying this disk if you are interested in up-and-coming new rock bands, especially those with a guitar-based 'lo-fi' bent. I saw them live in Philly and their music was part acoustic, part electric. Their set went from mellow acoustic duets to full-on, noise-inspired, energized rock. Their music is melodic and uses interesting chord changes, song structures, and vocal harmonies. It is alternative/lo-fi in genre as opposed to blues-based rock.

This disc includes the best from their live set. Comparisons to Sebadoh, Beck, Hayden, Smashing Pumpkins (Pisces Iscariot), and early Radiohead come to mind. While their music may sometimes borrow from these artists, it merely references them without copying. In this way, they make a unique addition to a woefully sparse Lo-Fi genre. The best cuts are the driving melody of 'Broken', the high-energy waltz of 'The Western Shore', the epic 'In My Time', and the Beck-would-be-proud 'Rust and Cyanide'.

Despite a few near-misses on the disc, it is listenable straight through and every time I listen to it, I hear more that I like. For the hits noted above and their potential for a 5-star disc in the near future, I give them 4 stars for this excellent debut. Rock on Alaska and come back to Philly soon!

His respect and approach to the lyrical content with great respect to the melody is by far second to none. 4 out of 5 stars Downings Incites "Emotions" Once Again.......2005-01-09

Prime Cuts: Hey There Lonely Girl, Beautiful to Me, A Million Ways

Hailed as the avatar of sensuality, Downing's 11th album "Emotions" continues to accost the rabid admiration of the hopelessly romantic. Accompanied by a cadre of laureate such as Norman Brown, George Duke, Kirk Whalum and Nicholas Payton, Downing continues to execute his trademark soulful tenor over some of the most quixotic musical expeditions. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Downing has resisted the cusp of commercial allure by not giving in to the beeps of the hip hop shenanigans. Rather, what we have here are 10 solid soulful numbers with a tilt towards modern smooth jazz. Ironically, "Emotions" is also one of Downings most successful albums of late, making its way to the number 2 position on Billboard's Modern Jazz album chart as well as bowing at number 9 on the R&B/Hip Hop album chart.

Without a doubt, "Hey There Lonely Girl" is easily the highlight. Abetted by the smooth vibes of tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum, "Hey There Lonely Girl" is a milquetoast romantic invite from an earnest Downing over a gorgeous melody. Corollary to that, "Riding on a Cloud," a ballad coming from the pens of Barry Eastmond and Gordon Chambers, finds Downing on cloud nine basking in love's delight. For aficionados of Downings' late night love ballads such as "Maybe" from his "Sensual Journey" CD, "Falling in Love with Me" is sultry, sexy and warm. Love again is the theme of "Beautiful to Me," but this time we find Downing pouring out his heart to his daughter on this ode of paternal affection. Such benevolent affirmation from a father to his daughter is certainly much called for in this culture of the disintegration of the family.

On the uptempo side, lead single "A Million Ways" shows Downing's keening awareness of the opposite sex as he rightly points out that a woman's happiness is not restricted just to the bedroom. This is a much needed to hear advice from those who think that women are from Venus. Norman Brown adds his plush backing vocals to the easy going "King of Fools." As Downing has been known for his share of covers, this time two are included. "Anytime," a track from Janet Jackson's sex charged "Velvet Rope" CD, is perhaps an uncanny choice. Sad to say, Downing has blatantly tried to transposed Jackson's eroticism over with lustful moans which are uncalled for. Also, "Anytime" does not carry the same weight melodically as some of Downings' other covers (such as brother Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It"). "Daydreaming" is the other cover this time from the Aretha Franklin. Compared to the Queen of Soul's spirited version, Downings' cover sounds tautological.

Nevertheless, for fans of smooth jazz and those who like R&B ballads, this is a collection great tunes from a seasoned artist who speaks the language of love with fresh argots and with an accent eloquent with sincerity. Thanks are in order to GRP Records for allowing Downing to advance his vision of music without concessions to the frivolity of today's music.

5 out of 5 stars THE SMOOTHEST VOICE SINCE LUTHER.. BUT EVEN SMOOTHER.......2004-12-02

THIS BROTHA AINT NO JOKE! ALL OF HIS ALBUMS ARE NOTHING BUT SOOTHING FOR THE SOUL. I OWN ALL OF HIS CDS EXCEPT FOR HIS FIRST TWO WHICH I AM WORKING ON,..EVEN HIS MOST RECENT CHRISTMAS CD WHICH IS BETTER THAN HIS LAST TWO CD'S(EMOTIONS, AND SENSUAL JOURNEY). NOW U KNOW THAT IS DARN SUPERB FOR A CHRISTMAS CD.. THE WAY HE SINGS AND FLOWS ON HIS CHRISTMAS CD IS REMINDS ME MUCH OF HOW HE FLOWS, SINGS AND HITS ALL NOTES ON THE SCALE SHOWING OFF HIS SKILLS AS HE DID ON HIS INVITATION ONLY CD.. WHICH IS HIS BEST EVER IN MY OPINION! NOT TO TAKE AWAY ANYTHING FROM HIS GREATER THAN GREAT PERFORMANCES ON HIS LAST TWO CDS.. BUT I LIKE HIS EARLIER ALBUMS. THE WAY THAT HE SINGS ON THOSE WERE JUST SO MUCH MORE PRETTIER (SHOWING OFF HIS SKILLZ-RANGE) I UNDERSTAND THAT HE'S TRYING TO ACHIEVE CERTAIN LEVELS A FAR AS RECOGNITION AND A BIGGER AUDIENCE, BUT I THINK THAT WILL SHOULD MAYBE FOCUS MORE ON THE AUDIENCE THAT GOT HIM WHERE HE IS TODAY.. HIS ORIGIONAL ADULT FAN BASE. IF THESE NEWJACKS ARENT READY FOR HIM, THEN THEY'LL JUST MISS OUT.. THEY'LL CATCH UP TO HIM SOONER OR LATER. (HOPEFULLY SOONER) BUT AGAIN.. NO KNOCK.. I AINT MAD AT CHA WILL,.. DO YOUR THANG BROTHA. U DA MAN NO DOUBT! WISH I COULD SING LIKE THAT. WHEN I GROW UP,. I WANNA BE JUST LIKE U!!!

    5 out of 5 stars ummmm huh!.......2004-12-01

I have finally found it. I have searched high and low for years for this one song. It it well worth the price of the CD. Now I can hear it all year round, as opposed to the holiday season only.

3 out of 5 stars Rare Xmas Treasure.......2006-03-29

"WHAT DO THE LONELY DO AT XMAS" is an R&B holiday classic. That hard-to-find track is worth the price of the CD. Why it's not included in an of the Emotions "BEST OF ..." collections is beyond me! The song has that aching, tender appeal of the old-school girl-groups like the Supremes and the Marvellettes.

5 out of 5 stars Sing a Song of Disgust..........2006-10-15

It seems it took many bad experiences, including problems with record companies, Jaz Coleman being on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and global politics in general, for the Joke to release this monster of an album. The title says it all, and it is, in my opinion, one of their best releases. This being said, however, I am going to start its evaluation by discussing some of its flaws. The first of these is that the album is marred by slightly excessive length for many of the songs; many, if not most, of these outstanding tunes should be at least slightly shorter, "the Beautiful Dead" being the most prominent example. The second flaw, which I actually feel is more important, is the production. The vocals and the drums seem to be given much greater treatment, in terms of volume and clarity, than the guitar, the keyboards and samples, and the bass. Of these three latter elements, the guitar is certainly the most prominent, but it is not given anything close to the prominence that is found on many of Killing Joke's other releases. Unfortunately, the bass and the synthesizers get too buried under the guitar and blend too well with it, which in turn is buried underneath the production of the drums and vocals. Despite all of these things, however, this album is not only musically great, as are most, if not all, of the band's releases, but it REALLY captures a genuine essence of disgust! Extremities... is kicked off with the famous "Money is Not Our God," a strong track and political number that makes a very effective intro. "Age of Greed" is another great song, and it serves as an effective transition from the first song to the remainder of the album, as it is finds itself somewhere between the raw energy of "Money is Not Our God" and the remainder of the album, which generally seems to get darker and more venomous as it progresses; also, unlike some of the other songs, its epic length does not detract from its greatness. "The Beautiful Dead" is a bit too long, but it is a nice, dark number with hypnotic keyboards and some great thrash thrown in for good measure! "Extremities" is a thrashy industrial number with some typical "Killing Joke melody" thrown in the middle-- present on this album, as with practically every one of their releases, is the dark, sarcastic melody that is a trademark of the band. "Intravenous" is ugly-- in a good way, that is, and venomous is the only word to "literally" describe it (musically and lyrically). The remaining tracks take a turn towards a somewhat darker atmosphere than the first half of the album (which is also dark), and they range from somber and beautiful ("Inside the Termite Mound" and "Solitude") to the mysterious "Kaliyuga" and the tribal, thrashy, Ministry-like number "Struggle"-- an effective closing, no doubt. Some complain about the drumming of Martin Atkins on this album. While his thrashing style is a bit different from that of big Paul Ferguson, it must be noted that it is an excellent performance nevertheless. Besides, there are moments, both tribal and dancy, in which Mr. Atkins's drumming bears many similarities to that of Big Paul. Extremities, Dirt, and Various Repressed Emotions is an excellent addition to Killing Joke's awesome catalogue of releases as well as a good example of what punk-influenced industrial rock sounded like at the time, and I strongly recommend owning it!

4 out of 5 stars bleak and powerful.......2005-10-27

Extremities... is the kind of album that you have to respect from a distance. of course, when compared with Killing Joke's first few releases, this doesn't match up. but there is a snarling sense of drive and purpose that cuts through these songs and the album, as a whole, has a wonderfully bleak atmosphere throughout it's running time. a dark grey soundscape of frustration and futile struggle.

5 out of 5 stars Killing Joke At Their Raging Best!!!.......2005-05-06

This is the best Killing Joke cd in all their years as a vital presence in underground music. Extremities has everything that makes Killing Joke one of the best bands out there, especially the rage and frustration towards the world. It is perhaps their masterpiece, filled with all the right touches from beginning to end. Once the music kicks in, you know that Killing Joke mean serious business.

Jaz Coleman's voice has never been more solid than in this hourlong cd excursion into varied aggression. Many harsh emotions pour out from track to track about such issues as power and greed (Money Is Not Our God)as well as destruction and poverty (Age Of Greed). Coleman's lyrics have never been more passionate and sincere, reacting to the world's problems,"I fill hate...don't be afraid to show your hate".

There is a deep-seeded anger that can't be ignored, listening to Extremities. Raven's bass continues to line in sync with the rest of the band. Geordie's guitars are as fierce as ever, perfect timing. Martin Atkins, formerly of PIL, fills in the drums and pounds amazingly despite the reality that this is the only KJ album he is featured in. "Intravenous" and "Struggle" instantly come to mind.

Deep down, my favorites in this cd are the ones that blend the rage with Coleman's mellower vocals previously heard in 1000 Suns and Outside The Gate. "Solitude" is haunting, esoteric, and filled with desperation. "Slipstream" seems to be a lighter song about time and age, sung to the backdrop of fierce
instrumentation. "North Of The Border" has these great riffs, lyrics, everything, including a nails-on-a-chalkboard effect.

Extremities is a tough-as-nails, poignant, violent response to many things that were wrong with society, and could still be reactive to the current state of affairs in the world. The band were as honest, loose, completely free-willed in their convictions as ever when this cd first came out in 1990. Fifteen years later, it remains Killing Joke's magnum opus.It pretty much sums up everything you need to know about the band.

    3 out of 5 stars Goodbye synthesizers..........2005-04-07

After the slick, clean, synth-driven sounds on "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns" and the disasterous release of the somewhat underrated "Outside the Gate", Killing Joke returned with the somewhat overrated "Extremities, Dirt and Various Repressed Emotions". Paul Ferguson, unhappy with the band, had left, leaving vocalist Jaz Coleman and guitarist Geordie to figure it out-- they ended up being joined by old cohort Paul Raven on bass and industrial legend and former P.I.L. drummer Martin Atkins. This was probably in retrospect a mistake-- Atkins was another strong personality in a band dominated by the vision of Jaz Coleman. Its no wonder Coleman abdicated and Atkins kept the rest and put together the short-lived Murder, Inc. with all of these guys.

Nonetheless, this album documents their collaboration-- Coleman's focus has over the past couple albums drifted a bit closer to home,t his one seems largely about the evil's of society-- especially money, as so nicely illustrated by the two openers on the album, the powerful "Money Is Not Our God" and "Age of Greed". Gone are the synthesizers, the edgy guitars, and the smooth vocals, instead its raging and boiling like the old records-- Coleman wails on top of a distorted guitar wall. However, Atkins fills a different role-- he's a fine drummer, but he doesn't fall into the tribal or dance rhythms that dominated the early records, and with Raven largely falling in step rhythmically, this is a far less interesting band. The opening two tracks are great, but after that, its sort of an album of sludge industrial. Not that its particularly bad, but my expectations of Killing Joke are much higher than this, and without the usual level of noise and effects that a lot of industrial music carries, there's a lack of variety on the record as it passes from one heavy, loud song to another-- I'll grant that "Extremities" and "Inside the Termite Mound" are both great pieces, but outside those two and the opening pair, this one is somewhat formless metal. Maybe if it wasn't over an hour, it'd digest easier.

Nonetheless, there's enough great moments here to make me think reasonably of it, and if you come from a metal or industrial background, you'll probably love it.

4 out of 5 stars say what you will...this is one of KJ's best..........2004-12-03

MARTIN ATKINS. It wouldn't matter what kind of GUB was on this CD...it Martin played the drums, it's worth investing in. He creates the most incredible, undulating, MUSIC with merely a drum set, and sometimes a few other odd niose-makers (a rusty sink or old camera, as in some Pigface recordings). One thing holds true on all of KJ's discs--it's drum oriented, tribal, rhythmic chaos. They recruit a fantastic drummer for every disc (how about Dave Grohl on their new CD?) It was only a matter of time that they would run into England's most distinctive alternative drummer--Martin Atkins.

True, only the first two tracks and track 4 are legendary. The rest of the CD is like an odd Led Zeppelin tune: a rarely listened-to, John Bonham classic. I'm stunned by what some of the other reviewers have written! I have ALL their discs, adn I'm much happier chilling to this CD, rather than trudging through "Revelations" or "Fire Dances." Those are great CD's in their own classic sense, but song for song, if I was listening for 60+ minutes without skipping tracks, this one is at the top. There are even a few tracks I skip on "Pandemonium"...it gets too synth-ish at times.

There are some people who truly enjoy Atkins work...I am one of them, because I believe that a great, imaginative drummer puts the icing on the cake...he won't be with us forever--get this CD. The drums haven't been rendered this good in alternative music since, well--Pigface, Ministry, PiL,...
