Finally, the U.S. sees a domestic release of Fatboy Slim's On the Floor at the Boutique, hands down one of the most thrilling, addictive DJ mix albums ever released. Recorded live in 1998 at the Big Beat Boutique (epicenter of the mid- to late-'90s big-beat movement), Norman Cook, a.k.a. Fatboy Slim, takes the listener on a fascinating, diverse tour of four-on-the-floor sounds. What's always made Cook so great is the way that he seamlessly blends seemingly incongruous sounds to create righteously cool, shiny new beats; he truly is the trainspotting vinyl freak with an uncanny talent for creating accessible dance-floor shakers built of weird components. Take track 4--who'd have thought a spry blue-beat ska sample, an ELO riff, phat beats, a few stray horn riffs, and a sped-up Jungle Brothers vocal track would be one of the coolest things heard all year? --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars A Fatboy virgin's first adventure.......2005-11-02

WOW!! This was my first Fatboy CD. I had never even heard of him before buying. I was bored musically and looking for something new, different, and good. Talk about a bullseye.
I consider 'Boutique', to be one of the best CD's I've ever bought. Seamless music melding with infectious beats and glorious upbeat tempo make this a fantastic party album. Buy it, borrow it, download it, whatever it takes to experience this Fatboy masterpiece

3 out of 5 stars Not all good.......2004-02-16

I admit there are some really good tracks on this album (specifically #1, 9, 10, and 15-19), but the rest are just OK/border on annoying. Sadly, I'll probably get 10 million people clicking the No, this review was not helpful button because I don't give every album a 5 star review. Oh well. Bottom Line: Buy this only if you are a diehard Fatboy Slim fan. Otherwise, just download the tracks I listed.

4 out of 5 stars keep dat funk ALIVE!.......2002-01-16

The legendary Big Beat Boutique in Brighton housed some great artists (like Lo Fidelity Allstars, Bentley Rhythm Ace, and of course Fatboy Slim), but in 2000, it was shut down. So Norman Cook a.k.a Fatboy Slim threw together this live mix in retrospective of this great club. On this CD, you will find funky rhythm assaults, bouncing samples, drunken drum loops, and, of course, a LOT of funk. You'll be shakin it up to some of these swelling trax. I thought it really got great from track 6 to 9, where it reaches it's climax of sonic quality, topping off with DJ Tonka's essential "Phunky". Fatboy throws on a variety of records, from hip-hop / trip-hop ("Because I Got It Like That" and "Deaf Mike's Throwdown") to funky classics ("Apache" and "Post Punk Progression") and just plain great songs ("The World's Made Up Of This And That" and "Phun-Ky"). A great CD, be sure to pick it up on the way to a party as it appeals to most people and is great to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars Not what you'd expect..........2001-12-03

When I fist bought this CD and listened to it I was a bit shocked. This was not the Fatboy Slim that I knew. However, after listening to this CD a few times I was completely in love. This is not "You've Come a Long Way, Baby", so don't buy it if that's what you're looking for. However, if you're looking to listen to some incredible music just pop this booty- licious CD in the player. Track 4 is classic. Oh Norman...what can't you do?

5 out of 5 stars a-freaking-mazing.......2001-05-16

This album busts a better move than your mother after her breakdancing lesson. But seriously folks, how this CD rocks! May possibly lead to booty-shaking...

4 out of 5 stars Got to like it.......2007-02-01

When I heard samples from this CD, I really wanted to get it. However, when I did and listened the full versions I did not seem to like them that much. There are several pices that I totally do not care for, a few I really like (especially, Bach's pieces), and some I got used to. Overall, I like the CD, but not as much as I though I would.

5 out of 5 stars A gleaming vision of brass sound.......2005-10-18

The Canadian Brass have been a lively and fun force in music for decades, since being brought together in Toronto 'by a gleaming vision of brass sound'. They are now world famous, having delighted and dazzled people in concerts all over the globe. One of the problems for a group such as this is the lack of repertoire readily available, so the group has become expert at arranging pieces for other instruments for their ensemble. They have also commissioned a good number of pieces of their performance.

One such commission is found on this recording, entitled 'The Well-Tampered Bach', a take-off on the Bach work 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. This is a setting of various pieces by J.S. Bach for brass quintet and drums, worked by Luther Henderson for the ensemble's 1985 appearance in Toronto. Henderson is a frequent arranger and composer for the Canadian Brass, having also put together the 'Tuba Tiger Rag', reminiscent of the World War I era, and jazz pieces like 'Beale Street Blues'.

More traditional composers are represented in arrangement for brass, such as a more standard arrangement for Bach's Fugue in G minor, Mozart's Turkish Rondon, and pieces from Gabrieli, Vivaldi, Strauss, Rossini, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pachelbel.

The disc has a wonderful blend of pieces classical and modern, 'proper' composition and traditional/folk inspiration, and a very lively and powerful presentation of all the music.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-07-20

This CD is amazing. It's a shame more people don't know about this incredible group. I'm a brass player and I just learned of these guys a few months ago. If you like classical music or brass music, this is a must own!

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD.......2000-12-12

If you like the sound of brass and if your tastes run the gamut from Gabrieli to Handy, with stops hither and yon, this CD is essential to your collection. In it, the Canadian Brass demonstrate their amazing ability to play the early Baroque masters right along side the early jazz masters -- and make it seem perfectly natural! In the process, a bit of Rimsky-Korsakov, Mozart and Lord knows what gets thrown in for good measure. Plus, they play a rousing rendition of Bach's "Little Fugue in G Minor." If the music on this CD doesn't get you going, you need to immediately go to the ER at the nearest hospital!

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Best of" the Canadian Brass.......1999-10-26

If you buy one Canadian Brass CD, buy this one. It contains the widest variety of musical eras and styles. Our favorite CB song, Beale Street Blues is hard to find, but on this CD. There are serious, classical selections and fun songs such as the "Tuba Tiger Rag" and "Flight of the Tuba Bee". This is Brass Quintet music at its best!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Talented young group of musicians.......2006-12-27

I took a chance on this CD after seeing the trumpet player Troy Andrews on television (studio 60) and wanting to hear more...I was not disappointed.

In places on this enjoyable CD the youth of this group shows - in some ways this makes for a raw, fresh sound. In others it simply reminds you that these young men have years ahead of them to hone their craft. In places the CD really takes off though, most notably on the third track, "get down", a hard driving tuba-bass heavy funkified jam that will have you dancing around in your living room in your boxers, hoping the neighbors aren't looking in your windows. This track was worth the price of admission alone.

I love the blend of styles, though it doesn't work as well for some of the tracks as others. Still, there's plenty of good music on this CD, and I'm glad to have supported these players with my purchase. I almost with the entire CD was funk, as that is what these guys seem to do best. Echoes of Tower of Power shine through in places - they all seem to play more confident on the funk tracks.

I gave it 4 stars, but 3.5 seems a bit more appropriate. No insult to the group at all - the music is excellent, but production quality is not entirely consistent, and in places it comes off as a bit raw. Where it works though, it really works - track 7 is a terrific funky horn-based jam and they're really in the pocket throughout. Likewise with the aforementioned "get down" (track 3), and track 8 is another bright spot on the CD.

I look forward to hearing what these guys do with their bright musical futures. If you're a fan of upbeat funky music with a tight horn section and subtle hammond organ throughout you will probably enjoy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Be as Funky as you Can Be.......2006-06-15

I dare you to stay seated when this one comes on. Its recorded better than most of the Rebirth's discs, which turns out to make a big difference. The reason I gave only 4 stars is because no recording has ever really captured the Rebirth. But with this one, you can start to feel the thump of 10 musicians pounding out the groove; you can start to smell the sweat of 100 people dancing in a tiny bar. Not just rhythm-funky, its nasty-funky too.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, funky brass band.......2001-05-16

This represents a great version of right-now New Orleans brass-band jazz -- very funky fusion of Dixieland jazz, hip-hop, soul, and marching band. Live-in-the-studio recording really captures their energy (and some of their warts) with somewhat better quality sound than most live records. It's almost impossible not to move to the music -- my restrained-around-the-house teenager and a business associate of my wife's were both dancing around the kitchen with this on. Take the parental advisory seriously, though! Almost every song has lyrics, and there is a strong street component to most of them.

5 out of 5 stars Best music ever........2006-04-15

Sometimes music is so good that it's unbelievable. Well written, well arranged, and well performed. This CD is just that kind of music.

Youngblood Brass Band is true "brass band" comprised of sousaphone, trombone(s), trumpets, tenor sax, bass drum, snare drum, and cymbals, the main feeling is POWER: the power to play loud or soft, featuring inspired solos backed by thick harmonies and counter-melodies to make the music interesting listen after listen. The drum beats are so tight you'd swear they were played by one person on a drumset instead of two people on separate bass and snare drums.

While the album does feature some "rap" over the music, if you (like me) dislike rap, thankfully two of the best songs, "Brooklyn" and "V.I.P.", are instrumentals. Also, the lyrics are more cerebral than most you'll hear these days.

"Brooklyn" is probably the best song, featuring trombone solos, tenor sax solos, and one of the most fantastic sousaphone solos you'll ever hear by Nat McCavish. Tuba players must listen to it!

I've listened to this group as often as possible for years, and have yet to become bored of their music. I suggest you visit their website for more of their music, too.

5 out of 5 stars FREAKIN GREAT ALBUM.......2006-03-10

Read everyone elses review, I'm just adding my 2 cents on how much you need to own this album!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums. Ever........2006-02-27

First off, yes, this is a hip-hop album. If you are not a huge fan of rap lyrics and "foul language" then you MAY not enjoy this album if you can't get past that fact. However, I would HIGHLY recommend this album to anyone who enjoys really great music. The MC of this group can write lyrics like nobody else that I know (the closest I can think of is Tomas Kalnoky from Streetlight Manifesto). Not only are the lyrics amazing, the sousaphone groove backed with the horn "sampling" is amazing. Diaspora would probably be my favorite track, followed by Elegy and Brooklyn.

I have the older YBB albums, and I have to say that this is my favorite one yet. What sets this album apart from the others in my opinion is the sheer variety in musical stylings. It seems that all of the older songs for the most part simply open up with the sousaphone walking a bassline and then the horns come in (which isn't a bad thing).

If you've never heard of Youngblood Brass Band and have an open mind for something a little off the beaten trail, then I'd recommend picking this one up. If you love Youngblood, then why don't you already have this album?

5 out of 5 stars Why is YBBB so awesome?.......2004-10-12

First, this album is amazing. I dont know why one can critique the rap when it is so thought provoking and eloquent. Second, the tuba player did not use multiple tracks on "Nate Mccarish Handbills for No Man" By the way, thats the full title, not just ""Hanbills for no man"" He plays two notes simeltaneously by using a half-open valve. Yes, its possible. I highly recommend buying this album, it is an experience in itself which will hopefully increase your appreciation for all artists(emphisis on the point that not all musicians are artists, one must create to be an artist).
Peace

2 out of 5 stars Too much rap and foul language.......2004-07-07

I was introduced to the Youngblood Brass Band after listening to public radio (NPR) one morning. The band was being interviewed and played their songs Brooklyn and Human Nature on air so that we could hear a sample of their talents. I was blown away and told everyone about what I heard on the radio. The Youngbloods said that those two songs truly represent their album and their style of music: Based on that statement I bought the album looking for more songs like Brooklyn and Human Nature. What I got was an album full of stupid raps that messed up the band. I would have been happier if the youngbloods made an instrumental version to this album for those who don't like the rap.

But what really made me upset is their constant dropping of the F-Bomb. I don't think it's right for an album that has cursing in it to not bear the Parental Advisory Label. I was highly upset. This album received two stars from me for the two redeeming songs that I like.

If you don't mind listing to a rapping band that curses, this album is for you. But if you just want to hear a great band, you may be disappointed.

Mixtape magazine gives this hot mixtape 10 out of 10 stars, a classic rating! Signed to Aftermath in 2005, G.A.G.E. patiently waited for his album to drop for 2 years while Dr. Dre focused on other "more imporant" artists like Bishop Lamont, finally to be released from Aftermath in order to start his own record label, in an attempt to get his music released as quickly as possible by doing it entirely by himself. Contrary to popular belief, G.A.G.E. is not a firearms reference, but rather an acronym for "Germantown Avenue, Gotta Eat". Straight outta Northwest Philly, G.A.G.E. reps his set and reps it hard, and with appearances by The Game and Akon fans of real gangsta rap should definitely cop this one! "After The Aftermath" gives you sick lyrics over dope beats, and if you listen closely you will hear some inside info on what really went down between G.A.G.E. and the Aftermath camp. Most of the beats are originals produced by DJ Khaled and others, with a couple new instrumentals jacked straight from Dr. Dre that were meant to be on the Aftermath release of G.A.G.E.'s debut album, which will never see the light of day. Only 10,000 copies of this limited edition mixtape were pressed, so get 'em while you can! [25 Tracks]

    4 out of 5 stars Brass-Hop's for real.......2006-08-17

While most musicians just recycle and re-recycle the same old paradigms, something fresh does comes along every now and then. Meet Coolbone. This band combines hip-hop with New Orleans style jazz. It's like the ReBirth Brass Band meets Us3. Unlike most hip-hop, this music feels organic. While Brass-Hop employs electronic drums and an occasional background loop, this music feels like it was played in real time by actual musicians. Granted, there are a few moments when the brass sounds a bit like a high school marching band, but those times are few and far between. Aside from the originality of the project, the song writing is strong. The content is Afrocentric and socially conscious. Many tracks are filled with catchy hooks. The chorus for 'I Ain't Got None' is the Jefferson's "We're movin' on up" while 'Float Like A Butterfly' repeats Muhammad Ali's famous line. 'The Saints' is Coolbone's swingin' version of 'When the Saints Go Marchin' In.' This album is on a similar footing with Us3's "Hand on the Torch" -another 1990's jazz/hip-hop crossover. At the time of review, the potential listener could pick-up a dozen copies of this unappreciated gem for under a buck. Go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Something completely different..........2004-02-24

I saw these guys on Louisiana Jukebox one night while suffereing from insomnia, and I'm glad that I was awake. 100% ORIGINAL N'Awlins funk. These guys have crafted the New Orleans sound into something so unique that it can't be touched. In a way, I wish there were more bands like this out there...but then again, let's leave it to the fellas that do it right the first time.
For those of you that don't know what Brass Hop is, it's like this. Take a funky hip hop track, and replace the bass with a tuba (or is it a sousaphone?). Take that keyboard track out and toss in some trombones. Then get rid of the rest of the sound effects that every rap artist uses these days, and add some trumpet. Now start rapping about REAL stuff, not all about rims and guns. You're getting the idea now...but you have to sprinkle dust from the streets of New Orleans all over it, or it won't have that distinct NOLA flavor. Don't worry, it's easy to digest, and it goes down real smooth. These are true New Orleans musicians that deserve worldwide recognition. Peace.

2 out of 5 stars Must be better live.......2004-11-24

It's quite apparent that the Rebirth Brass Band knows how to jam. The energy, the excitement...it's all there in the album; you can tell these guys are having as much fun as their audience. But this album is just awful for two reasons: 1) The recording is bad. 2) The musicianship displayed is NOT top-quality.

The recording levels, combined with the proximity of a snare drum add a constant buzz to the sound--particularly the sousaphone--that will drive you nuts! I want to hear a powerful, booming rhythm section, but fuzzy sound just sucks the enjoyment right out of what is obviously a jumping set.

The CD is fun, and it's obvious everyone is having a blast, but don't hope much for a good sound or brilliant technical artistry. This is a party band. Their attacks are shaky, their intonation suspect, and their abilities obviously not at acme during the session. Solos are repetitive and unmusical. Musical dynamics are all triple-f. The band loves to scream hip-hop rhymes and catchphrases during lulls and between tunes--rap-stuff like the ubiquitous "now somebody scream!" Poor sound feedback at the venue? Too much drinking? Who knows? The CD becomes one long, monotonous, atonal mass of squawking brass and silly audience-prodding. It all adds up to something resembling a drunken pep-rally.

I had very high hopes for this CD, and I still hold out some hope for the band. I love Dixieland. I love brass. I didn't love this album, and that really, really disappoints me.

5 out of 5 stars Almost as Good as Being There.......2002-01-30

This is a great CD - a must have! The only better is seeing Rebirth play live at the Maple Leaf on Tuesday nights - a true NOLA tradition - eat next door at Jacque-IMOs to make it a perfect night of NOLA food and awesome NOLA music!

      4 out of 5 stars Rebirth Represents! ! !.......2000-01-25

Great live sounds from a great brass band. It's fun ... classic jazz brass kickin' it live with a bit (too much) flava at times. A whole lotta kick-as* horns in your face. It'll make you feel like you're dancing with the band at The Leaf. Gave it 4/5 because there's a bit too much singin' on a few tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Reliving the experience..........2000-01-06

I was in New Orleans last week, and just happened to stumble across Rebirth in the Maple Leaf! Can you believe that a brass band can jam a jazz-like improvisation for 20 minutes? Rebirth can, and it's hypnotizing! Who would've guessed that a snare drum and a sousaphone could produce such a powerful rythym section... If you have a hunger for live music, then this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Only in New Orleans.......1999-10-29

The ressurgence of brass band music in New Orleans, a tradition deep-rooted in the culture of the city, came about with the Dirty Dozen. However, ReBirth has picked up where the Dozen left off and this album is the proof. Never before has any live album contained so much unconstrained funk and energy. This is not album you simply listen to with your ears, its an album you listen to with your entire body.
