Album Can Be A Little Shady At Times (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-04-26
Especially when:
A) W.C. is a West Coast vet, who rarely flaws
B) Being told that this was one of the best of 1998
C) The Rap Pages Magazine gave this a 5 out of 5 (and they were pretty accurate in their reviews before they discontinued)
This album, W.C. rhymes about the street life and jacking/robbing people on most of the tracks. On the title track, "The Shadiest One" he and CJ Mac rhyme about robbing people over an Ant Banks beat. A couple of few other songs that stood out to me was "The Autobiography" as W.C. rhymes about his past life on a old school Crazy Toones beat. I would say that the best song on the album would be "Like That" featuring Daz, CJ Mac, and Ice Cube. What makes that song unique is the Big Daddy Kane scraches in the song ("It's like that y'all..."), something that wasn't being heard that much back in the late 90's, especially on the west coast.
The Shadiest One is a solid album from W.C. One thing I seem to notice was that he uses the flow of other rappers in his songs. Now other artists do it, but many of them try not to make it noticable. Like on songs "Keep Hustlin'" and ""Can't Hold Back", he uses the flow of Rakim and Big Daddy Kane respectively. Even Skooby Doo reacreates the beat to "Ain't No Half Steppin'" for the latter song. Some of the production really doesn't hold together like I expected on a few tracks. Possibly because almost every producer used synthesizer in their beats, as a popular west coast production technique, but I got tried of it halfway through the album (and this is comming from a fan of west coast rap music).
The Shadiest One is an album worth owning, but I wouldn't rush out and go get it ASAP. At a time when the east was pulling together and the south was making a name for themselves and starting to blow up, people forgot what the west had to offer. The Shadiest One does give somewhat of a taste of what was left on the left coast. I recommend that you check this album out. More dedicated W.C. fans will probably be more happer than I am for this album. Peace!
