The Genius of Mannie Fresh.......2006-06-20
I have never been a big fan of most of the artists that have come from Cash Money. No disrespect intended; it's just that thug rap really doesn't reflect my tastes or lifestyle. I can only listen to so many songs about some b***h you're messing with, your desire and skill at being a killer and/or hustler/pimp and of course, what kind of material possessions you have that make everyone else a potential or actualized hater. In the past I had felt that New Orleans Hip Hop was misrepresented on a national and even worldwide scale, as the biggest local labels put out one genre of rap music (the variety of what might be classified as Hip Hop from New Orleans is far more diversified than bounce and gangsta rap). I appreciate and respect the business of doing things independently, especially when a successful formula has been discovered, but if it is not something I'm personally feeling, then chances are I'm not going to support it.
That said, I do feel this album, but not for the majority of reasons other reviewers had written. The beats compliment the lyrical content and the lyrics are oftentimes funny and entertaining as hell, but what I appreciate the most about this project is the satirical social commentary.
Mannie Fresh is a darn funny individual. His use of comedy to address social injustice, games with the opposite gender and our oftentimes unhealthy relationship with materialism is utter genius. He will take you lyrically and visually (please see the video for "Real Big") to the extremes of what we feel we need to be happy and show that those needs are ridiculous and potentially detrimental (somewhat like KRS One did with "Love's Gonna Get'cha," but in an ironically sublime fashion). This isn't to say that Fresh is not himself a materialist. He surely does enjoy those things that so many other rap music artists like to flaunt, but acknowledges primarily through comedy that there is far more to this world and necessary than the size of your rims and how much ice you can wear to ruin your grill.
Fresh is a businessman who makes beats. In the past he has created tracks for other rappers to bring the most out of them as performers, as well as make beats that satisfy their demographic of fans. Earlier songs produced by Fresh like "Back That A** Up" and "I Need A Hot Girl" aren't exactly great or even good songs far as what someone who considers themselves Hip Hop these days might enjoy. The lyrics are simple, the beats are, eh, alright. But it is what it is: pop music.
It is a business venture.
On this solo album, Mr. Fresh does what any sensible artist with a history of a very successful sound would do: continue to make songs that reflect the spirit of his earlier works. That's good business. But then add to this that he is no longer the man behind the boards, but the focus, and here we are given something more profound, something apart from what one might expect from Cash Money (as illustrated in the two brief Lil Wayne appearances). It is what it is: the mind of Mannie Fresh.
manny isn't fresh.......2006-01-10
Manny Fresh is an incredibally bad lyricist, the beats are dull, and everyone praising this garbage is no doubt from the south, where virtually NO good hip hop acts exist with the exception of Scarface and Outkast.
A FRESH album !.......2006-01-07
1-1/2 stars -- He's out of his mind.......2005-09-11
I don't understand why people on Cash Money feel like they have to fill up the entire disc. Like Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter, this album is also 79 minutes long (it has 30 tracks, which maks it longer than a Luke record). And it's even worse when everything on the album sucks. Some songs have stupid titles and even stupider lyrics (see "Beautiful B" and the failed club-rocker "P Power").
Even Baby outshines Mannie on the David Banner-produced "Go With Me". And while Banner's production saves the song, I wonder if he should step his production game up because when I heard the music, I felt like singing, "Rubber band man/Wild as the Taliban." But Banner's rapping ability hasn't improved either, as evidenced by when he is joined by Bun-B and Jasper (who?) on "How We Ride". By the way, what's up with Bun-B associating himself with all these wack emcees lately (Webbie's "Give Me That", anyone?)?
"Nothing Compares to Love" is a song for the children that falls flat, and that's due in part to the children's terrible singing during the chorus. Sexual songs like "Conversation" and "Tell It Like It Is" are ridiculous, and "I Know You Ain't Happy" made me think that Mannie was reading my mind. And I didn't think things could get any worse than when he decided to SING on "Not Tonight", but then came the final song, "Shake That A**" (with Tateeze, Reel and Lil' Mo). It horribly interpolates Keith Sweat's "Make It Last Forever" ("Shake that a** forever..."), and sorry, but whoever came up with that idea needs to get beat down.
I can't believe I actually listened to this whole album. It's not that I thought it would be very good, but I didn't think it would be THIS bad. Even Baby's albums are better than this. The Mind of Mannie Fresh is proof that someone should just stick to being behind the boards, because Fresh is sounding really sour. Oh, and all the skits suck, too.
