Honda hopes to make more noise with his sophomore effort, H II, without changing the formula that's given him a reputation as a true MC's DJ.... Honda's strength is straddling the fence between minimalist "underground" tracks and up-tempo dance-oriented beats. N.Y.C. mainstays the Rawcotiks are matched perfectly with Honda's bleak composition of subtle bass lines and harrowing horns in "For Every Day That Goes By," which evokes images of frozen project playgrounds.... In many ways, the album suffers from a lack of cohesion, sounding more like an underground mix tape than a complete disc. But the strength of the good material takes the weight off the rest and keeps it moving at a steady pace. Although he shows creative progress with each new project, Honda, with this second album, still falls short of fulfilling his potential as a hip-hop conductor for both the underground railroad and--music's mass transit.

Not only does this self-produced LP contain fresh beats, his scratches come extra crispy on each track as well. His collaborations with the Beatnuts, Black Attack, KRS-ONE ... among others, shine and maintain vitality throughout the full-length.... I got some PROBLEMZ...........2006-09-18

I need more DJ HONDA. This is by far the best production from a DJ to give these incredible MC's I've heard in a long time. All of the artists hold it down, especially Problemz & De la Soul. Its cool to hear De La again I remember why I was so into them. I guess what I want to say is this album will re-kindle some of your favorites including some help from Sinista & Roc Raida make this a must own for hip hop lovers.

to me this is his best album he stepped his game up on the production,its more dark now,nothing against the 1st one but this album has better production than the 1st one that's what really makes this album special,this is that real hip hop that you can blast in your car,he's underrated and shouldn't be,i hope he gets the attention he deserves,and what makes this album really special is that its an east coast hip hop compilation.recommeded for fans of real hip hop and underground hip hop,standout tracks are Trouble In The Water with de la soul,5 Seconds with black attack (he's nice), Team Players with krs-one and doe i think its jon doe not sure, Blaze It Up with black attack (my favorite track on the album),Go Crazy with S-On my 2nd favorite,and finally my 3rd favorite Around The Clock with problemz (that beat is hot,it has like a japanese mythical feel to it),recommended.

Awesome album, great to just relax too- has a ton of great appreances on it, it really would be impossible for this album to be anything less than 4 stars.... Black Attack, Mos Def, De La... its really dope and if you dont own it your missing out-

DJ Honda blesses this album with intense beats. Also, I was not dissapointed with any of the guest appearances. It was a good line up: especially with artists like The Beatnuts (Who the Trifest?) or De La Soul (Trouble In The Water) the albums gonna be good. Well worth checking out.

INCREDIBLE !!! This album is amazingly good !!! It's pure hip hop ! With the best lyricists and DJ Honda's stunning producing skills, this album is A MUST FOR ALL REAL HIP HOP FANS !! The best songs,(both not included in the imported version) are Hai! featuring Sermon, Murray & Redman ; and Travelling Man feat. Mos Def. Finally a DJ worth mentioning !!!

Haunting music.......2007-02-20

This cd has a haunting quality to the playing which struck at one's inner cord with its lovely flowing gentle quality. One could simply sit back and let the notes run through one's being, vibrating with it, as the notes hits softly, gently or vibrantly, sweeping the listener along its tide, going from gentle to vibrant, from gentle to exciting. I love the fast strumming and wonder at how a guitar could effect all that. It is a masterpiece, a stroke of genius transcribing something like Chopin from piano to guitar.

Great Music, Great Transcriptions, Mediocre Performance.......2006-12-27

Hearing Chopin on the Guitar is quite an enjoyable experience. Philip Hii has provided a recording with perhaps the best transcripitons of Chopin's Nocturnes for the guitar. The pieces work very well on the guitar, sound beautiful and really pay a lot of attention to preserving the textures and details of the original piano scores. Hii's scholarship in transfering the nocturne's from the piano to the guitar shows discipline and creativity. There is one problem with this recording, however. Unfortunately Hii's scholarship does not equal his performance chops. It's really a shame that Hii's playing really suffers. His attack is very sloppy. There is lots of noise that does not come from a vibrating guitar string. There's fret noise, string noise and nail noise. His attack in general is just very naily. Furthermore, his intonation is not always right on. It's really a shame that these faults are so obvious on this recording. They really distract from the beauty of the music. Most unfortunately, it's hard to enjoy such beautiful music when it's not performed well. Hii's wonderful transcription work doesn't make up for his undesirable tone. It's worth a listen to hear the marvelous transcriptions, but Hii's playing is far from exceptional.

I'm a long time guitar player.......2005-03-14

and love classical, flamenco, jazz, rock, etc... I've noticed that many classical guitarists aren't well versed in playing extremely rapid scale passages like some jazz, rock, and flamenco players, most notably, Al di Meola, John McLaughlin, and, probably the fastest and most cleanest player, Paco De Lucia. Hii is the first classical guitarist that plays as fast, if not faster, than Paco, with a very clean executed style and without slurs. His technique is phenomenal.

The music on the disc is amazing, and the Tocatta and Fugue are unbelievable. This is a must have disc for upcoming virtuoso guitarist of any genre.

Talented Player But..........2001-11-17

Philip's technical ability is unquestionable. He's fast and I'm sure has the musicality to impress anyone, unfortunately the transcriptions that he chose on this CD are lacking in feel and the quality of the recording has much to be desired.

I do like his website and he has some great opinions in it.

This is an incredible record. The Toccata and Fugue are just unbelievable. If you like classical guitar, this is a must have.

I accidentally got this CD in a box of demos. It was really good. I am someone who really enjoys the texture of music. He includes some of the resonant lows I look for. It is an excellent CD. I highly recommend it.
