Don't Sleep On This Era Of Hip-Hop (Classics).......2007-03-24

It is now 2007 and I still bang this classic joint. I really didn't appreciate it back in 96 because there were so many hot artists out at that time, but considering the current state of hip-hop or lack thereof, this is a certifiable classic!! One thing I always tell people was that 1993-96 was arguably the height of hip hop (before Puffy and Dupri pimped H.E.R. out).

Think about it (Nas, Rae & Ghostface purple tape, Ol Dirty, Jeru, Kool-G Rap, Keith Murray, Dice Raw who ate up BIG in a freestyle, Smif-N-Wessun, Gangstarr, Outkast, OGC, Black Moon, Heltah Skeltah, M.O.P., Madd Skillz, Smooth Da Hustler, The Chronic, B.I.G., Tupac, Flava In Ya Ear Remix, Crooklyn Dodgers, Group Home, Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, Diamond D., The Alchoholics, Mobb Deep, Tribe Called Quest, Redman, KRS-One, even the Fugees was bangin) and countless others I omitted. All of them dropped classic joints at the same time!! That is unbelievable when yoou look at the mediocrity that exists today. Remember the Source Awards when Suge basically spit on Puffy and offered to take his artists if "they were tired of the producer dancing all in the videos."

Oh yea, don't forget Yo! Raps on MTV.

All of those artists joints still bang today and these so-called stars and producers of today would have been laughed out of a mic booth if they had to compete in that era. "Da Storm" still reigns 11 years later. Don't sleep on Louieville Sluggah, Starang, Top Dog and the shining era of hip-hop minus the flash and bling (and every other commercial on TV pimping H.E.R.)!

Classic Album from O.G.C........2006-04-04

I'm writing the review today and the CD came out ten years ago. What does that tell you? This is a nice CD. 5 stars all the way. Good beats, good lyrics, what else to you want? Pick it up if you are looking for a good HipHop/Rap CD to buy that doesn't sound like anything you hear on T.V. these days. Too bad the Fab 5 never came out with a CD, that would have been nice.

this album right here is hot,the production is on point and it fits them,the beats for this album are dark,this album is good to play when its raining and you have nothing to do,what made me buy this album was the the hottest track on the album the single no fear. there are times when the album does get kind of boring,maybe its because of their style of rappin, but other than that its a good album and its recommended for fans of boot camp click.stand out tracks are Calm Before Da Storm,No Fear,and Gunn Clapp.

Originoo Gunn Clappaz' debut as Duck Down's Boot Camp Click has the gun power to take on any crew. This trio proved to be the eye of Da Storm with this release after being featured along side of label mates and fellow click members Heltah Skeltah as Fab 5. As "Intro" comes to a closing, "Calm Before Da Storm" set the pace and tones for what's to come on this LP. Production from Shaleek for this song is a hip-hop, East Coast feel to lead the way. Quickly, "No Fear" takes the stage and the highlight with mesmerizing production by Mr. Walt. What makes this so amazing is that you can feel them feed off one another with chants like "...what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up..." "Gunn Clapp" is about getting into the music industry. Starang Wondah kicks off a solo on "Hurricane Starang" as the group's front man, but nearly fails without support from the other gunners. Louieville Sluggah and Top Dog make preparations for trouble on "Danjer" as the alarm sounds. To add to the forecast of Mother Nature's fury, the title track compliments this album even if it's just an interlude. Sadat X & Sean Black aid in the efforts that nearly stray from the overall direction, but "Wild Cowboys In Bucktown" adds dimension since we asked for it. After this, the storm gets out of control and loses its strength.

Like most BCC joints this follows in the dark beats and in ya face raps. However, this LP as a whole just wasn't that great. There are classic hits & ill lines from Starang & company but some songs you feel like skippin. 3.5 stars would be a better rating.

There are some very pleasant surprises here. Not all of this music is top-drawer Tchaikovsky, but the composer also wrote what can only be called very good "bad music." In other words, if something's lacking in melodic charm or formal sophistication, he usually hides it behind a higher-than-average orchestral excitement and hysteria quotient. Fatum is a perfect example: it's slow to get going, but before you know it it's slamming you through the roof on its way to a rousing conclusion, and your overwhelming impression is that you've had a very good time. This may be the weakest work on the disc--all of the others are very good, and a bunch are masterpieces, so if you want all of the Tchaikovsky tone poems in one bargain set, this is a good pick. --David Hurwitz

This review is a tribute to Tchaikovsky's Francesca da Rimimi, perhaps the finest program piece ever written. The work is uncannily appropriate for its subject as though Dante's Francesca and Paolo composed it themselves! This uncanny mimetic power is apparent from the opening bars, not just because of the whirlwind effect but because of something inherent in the harmony and orchestration. The middle section of the work cannot live up to the whirlwind sequences at the start and finish; but that would have been impossible. It's the idea of the lost souls of two lovers in a whirlwind that enabled Tchaikovsky to "find himself" as never before or since.

On the strength of Francesca da Rimini, Hamlet, Romeo and the Manfred Symphony (not included in this Philips Duo), I have always felt that program music is the heart of Tchaikovsky's accomplishment rather than his symphonies and other classical forms. Although there is fine music in the composer's 2nd, 4th and 6th symphonies, Tchaikovsky does not really make anything of the form. The phrase "tone poem" describes what he really does with his basic style. There is a note of total authority in the high intensity emotional world of Francesca da Rimini that seems out of place in the classical design of the four-movement classical symphony. The Manfred Symphony is in four movements but is really a suite of four tone poems analogous to the three in Liszt's Faust Symphony. There is far more involved in Francesca da Rimini than attempt to represent a scene in a poem. Essays are attempts; poems are realizations. Francesca da Rimini is a realization-- a musical embodiment of the subject itself.

Tchaikovsky's best all in one set.......2006-11-04

This collection contains two Tchaikovsky war horses: "The 1812 Overture" and "Romeo and Juliet." Both works have been heard millions of times for a good reason--they are great works of music that do not tire easily. I bought this set for another reason, however. "Fatum," "Hamlet," "The Storm," "The Tempest" and "The Voyevode" are all great works that are way under-heard. They don't deserve the relatively obscure status they have received. The first three are performed very well on the first CD and each runs a familiar pattern of dramatic intensity followed by beautiful lyrical themes in the middle. Tchaikovsky was very generous with his melodies and these three works are no exception. Listen for an unusual and compelling ending to "Fatum." It is quite good and includes and unexpected "twist of fate." "The Storm" has several Berlioz-sounding devices which I found quite interesting.

The first CD also contains his masterpiece "Francesca da Rimini." The sound quality is excellent, but to me the tempo was a little too fast in the beginning. This makes it more exciting perhaps, but it's almost as if the orchestra is rushing into the whirlwinds instead of lettling listeners be drawn into them. I have other versions that add a lot more artistic flourishes to this music, but still what you'll hear here is flawless if slightly perfunctory.

On the 2nd CD, "The Tempest" is one of Tchaikovsky's earlier works. It is also beautiful, but I can't help but think it could use a little editing. It is a bit too long.

The real gem of this collection is "The Voyevode" and it is not heard often enough. This set is worth buying for this performance alone. It was one of the last of his orchestral works next to his 6th symphony. One can hear echoes and parallels to his last symphony. "The Voyevode" is one of his most intensely dark, mysterious, desolate--and the most Russian-sounding of any of his works. I have only 2 other versions and this one is by far the best I've heard. This music can easily sound muddy but this performance is rich with dramatic clarity. It was like I was listening to it for the first time--the way it 'should' sound. Listen to this masterpiece and you may be reminded of a Russian winter. At midnight. Spring is so very far away that it seems an impossible hope. But there is a brief respite from the frozen winds on this moonless night: A small fire inside a Russian peasant dwelling provides some feeble warmth. Unlike his other tone poems, there is no love theme here, but it is still splendid and flows like a shot of vodka. Then suddenly SLAM--the door is shut. We are once again lost in the numbing brutality of the Siberian winter. The ending is similar to the 6th symphony only this time it is even less gentle and sympathetic. There is no heartbeat or the slightest speck of hope. Just a Stalin-like cruel ending. Tchaikovsky tore up the score and called it 'rubbish.' This is very curious and indicates the distressed state of mind he was in before he drank the cholera-laden water. Fortunately they reconstructed the work from the remaining orchestral parts.

Finally, I'm happy they put the Voyevode and others with this set and not the over-heard "Cappricio Italien." It takes way too long to get going and the main theme tires easily.

This set would make a great gift for any Tchaikovsky fan.

Poemas sinfonicos sorprendentes..........2004-11-30

La virtud de este CD es tener todos los poemas sinfonicos de Tchaikovsky en una misma compra, pero por cierto ese es su mayor defecto. La calidad es insuperable y la sorpresa de ir de una obra ingeniosa y casi magica a otra es incomparable.
Eliahu Inbal es un director de bajo perfil pero de grandiosa calidad y recia direccion, sus versiones del Fatum, el Voyevoda y La tormenta son geniales, para esta ultima Rodesvensky es grandioso. Igor Markevitch toma a su cargo Hamlet, Francesca da Rimini y la obertura 1812, es un gran director ruso y lo demuestra, quizas le falta espectacularidad en la 1812, para Hamlet Dutoit es muy bueno, la 1812 de Ormandy y la de Jarvi son de antologia.
Bernard Haitink dirige en forma suprema la fantasia obertura Romeo y Julieta, version alternativa podrian buscar a Leonard Bernstein o Igor Markevitch.

BUEN ALBUM.......2000-04-26

Una linda colección de los poemas sinfónicos de Tchaikovsky, en dos discos a un buen precio. Las interpretaciones de todas las obras son de buen nivel, especialmente La Tempestad por Inbal y el Hamlet por Markevitch. De todos modos si usted tiene la posibilidad de adquirirlas en forma separada, mejor.

An excellent sampler to get into classical music.......2002-07-02

So often we hear classical music in the movies and wonder "What is that called?" Well now it's here - a chance to find it and listen again to something that caught your ear and your heart. While normally I'm not a big fan of sampler complication albums, I love this set because of the breadth of works represented here. While not explicitly instructional (the liner notes are non-existent, and there is no real explanation of the works beyond their appearance in a specific movie), it lets you experience many famous, and lesser known pieces of classical music. Besides just giving you a nice album to put on and relax to, it also lets you find someone that you may not have heard before, listen to a piece and maybe go off in search of more by the same composer.

The bottom line is that for this price, you have a bargain of CD's of fine quality, and extraordinary breadth, with an anchor to the movies to help put them in a place. Besides, where else can you look for a specific film to try and find out what was that piece that is stuck in your head?

Not only do you receive an entire collection of ten cds for a phenomenal value, but you get the best classical music ever composed. These are songs that have been featured in widely popular films, including Apocalypse Now, which brought fame to Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries. This will make a priceless gift for any lover of the cinema or of classical music. All of the songs that are included range from a variety of eras. Exemplary recording.......2003-04-24

When listening to this recording, one can see why St. Louis was so disappointed to lose Slatkin to D.C. This recording of Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" and his "Sinfonia da Requiem" is excellent in every way. Except for Britten's own recordings of these two works, I rate this as the best recordings of these works. The clarity of expression and the precision the ensemble exhibits are beyond reproach. Buy this recording.

Another gem from Slatkin.......2001-06-05

Slatkin has become one of my favorite conductors, and this CD adds to that confirmation. Both the Young Person's Guide and the Peter Grimes Interludes are marvelous, with lots of passion and powerful playing by the London Philharmonic.

Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)

Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.

To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.
