Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sheer beauty from Agnes Baltsa.......2005-06-23

This disc from Agnes Baltsa (Greek opera-singer) containing the most beautiful Greek songs is a real treat. It's recorded in the -80s when she was around 40 and in her prime. The songs are written by famous Greek composers like Theodorakis, Hadjidakis and Tsitsanis. My only complaint is that the cd only contains 11 songs. I wish it had at least 11 more.... But fortunately, my cd-player has a "repeat-button".......(Which I might add, is soon worn-out..)

For people unfamiliar with either Greek music or opera, this is the place to start. To me it seems that Greek music often is a matter of strong likes/dislikes, as is opera. You either love it or you hate it. After listening to this disc you will definitely want to seek out more recordings of Greek music and/or opera-recordings featuring Agnes Baltsa.

I know and love Agnes Baltsa from the opera stage, but even so, this record still amazes me. You will not hear her belt out painfully high notes like an opera-star on this cd - just beautiful singing throughout the whole disc. She also has a clear phrasing which I think is great, because it enables me to understand what the songs are all about. Being a classically trained singer one should perhaps think her voice unsuitable for simple-styled Greek folk songs. You couldn't be more wrong. Her crystal clear voice lends an elegancy to the songs that has to be heard to be believed. I'm a long time fan of Greek music and own a lot of recordings from various Greek artists, but never have I heard these songs so beautifully sung. This is definitely my "desert-island-recording" of Greek songs. I never tire of hearing them played again and again and again....

My favourite tracks from the disc have to be "Oniro pedion tis gitonias", "to treno fevgi stis okto", "O tahidromos" and "Arhontissa" and not to mention "Varkarolla". Her voice is just so hauntingly beautiful in these tracks. Don't be surprised if you end up in tears. But really, all the tracks are real treasures, gift-wrapped in Baltsa's velvet voice. It's a treat to hear Baltsa sing in her native tongue for the first time. It's obvious that she feels perfectly at ease here. She captures the melancholic beauty of the Greek soul so wonderfully. To me it's a mystery why she hasn't recorded more of this sort (at least I haven't been able to find any...)

The Athens Experimental Orchestra which is playing on this disc also deserves some words of praise. They make the Greek instruments sound heavenly and in the instrumental parts of the songs you just want to get up and dance.

This disc is really a proof of Greek supremacy - the music, the lyrics and Agnes Baltsa's singing - so simple and yet so powerful and breathtakingly beautiful. What more can I say? Just buy the cd ASAP!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2004-12-10

This album was first released by Deutsche Grammophon (DG) in 1986 under the title "Agnes Baltsa, Songs My Country Taught Me." I have owned it and enjoyed it for probably 15 years. It's a wonderful collection of very melodious Greek folk songs with fine arrangements sung by one of the great mezzo sopranos of our time. It's great that DG has seen fit to re-release it so many of you can also enjoy it. Buy it; you won't regret it.

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Although these days Byrd is mostly known for his vast output of sacred choral works, he contributed a considerable number of secular and instrumental pieces to the repertoire, and this disc includes a variety of works in all of these genres. In Byrd's England, musical accomplishment in the form of singing or playing an instrument was an accepted and highly regarded social skill. Naturally, composers filled the need for music to be performed in the homes of amateur musicians, and much of it took the form of songs and instrumental pieces for keyboard or groups of viols. Here, by means of the talents of I Fagiolini--a refreshingly spirited singing ensemble--Concordia consort of viols, and acclaimed harpsichordist Sophie Yateswe enjoy both Byrd's lighter side and a few of his more substantial religious works, arranged in an attractive and enlightening program. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Why aren't more ensembles doing this?.......2006-11-23

The theme of this CD focuses on the recusant nature of Byrd's Latin works - Catholicism being illegal at the time, his music would not have been performed by cathedral choirs as we often hear it today. So it certainly makes sense to perform them one on a part, and who knows, even with female voices on some of the parts. I Fagiolini is as good as any other early music group performing this repertoire, and the quality of the performance is excellent.

The thing that makes this CD stand out is the use of historical Anglo-Latin pronunciation (vih-jih-LAY-tee as opposed to vih-jih-LAH-tay.) It is like a breath of fresh air to hear this as opposed to the 19th-century ecclesiastical/Italianate Latin that most groups use. I don't understand why so many groups are resistant or even hostile to the notion of historical pronunciation. Far from being pedantic and irrelevant, historical pronunciation is well-documented, not that hard (once you lose the baggage of your college Latin diction classes) and it does have an affect on sound of the music. In this recording, I Fagiolini provides a great example of how this can be done well and why it should be done more.

If you're interested in learning more about historical pronunciation, check out the books Singing Early Music (ed. Timothy J. McGee), English Choral Practice 1400-1650 (ed. John Morehen), and if you're lucky to find a copy, Singing in Latin (Harold Copeman.)

4 out of 5 stars A well-selected collection of Byrd compositions.......1999-02-09

I Fagiolini put together an honest rendition of Byrd choral works. With a many existing recordings of Byrd choral works done with multiple voices per part, it is easy to forget that a number of such works were written for performance at a house or manor, by a very few musicians and in secret at forbidden Catholic ceremonies. I had previously only heard my favorite sacred song, Quomodo cantabimus, performed by The Sixteen. It was a delight to hear I Fagiolini with far fewer voices per part -- in this way they bring out so many of the little details that evince Byrd's true mastery. Yates' harpsichord performances are likewise honest, not overly ornamented (as it is easy enough to do with Byrd) and overall well-played. An interesting twist is I Fagiolini's pronunciation of the Latin texts, utilizing a far more English and less Italianate accent. It is quite strange to ears that are used to the latter, but an accompanying explanation justifies the accent as a choice to perform the choral works as accurately as possible.

I was introduced to Ketelbey's work by the late Guillermo Figueroa of the famous Figueroa Family group from Puerto Rico. In the few couple of years I worked assisting him, then the conductor for a Youth Chamber Music Orchestra, Don Guillermo helped me rediscover good classical and contemporary music, and introduced me to some great works like the one in review. The recordings are old school but the music is haunting, timeless and beautiful. I highly recommend this cd, and like Don Guillermo told me about 10 years ago: "Give it a chance, you don't have to be a great musician to appreciate great music"
How right was He!

These songs are emblazoned on my soul ever since my mother (now 82) played them for my sister and I. Each every cut (on her 33rpm album now unplayable for years of listening) left mystical moments and cherished memories for us all. Would love to be able to purchase 2 more copies if the label re-released "In a Persian Market, etc./Faris, London Proms". Anyone looking for a treasury of magical soul-lifting music should be sure to purchase this classic.

5 out of 5 stars DEATH METAL HOLOCAUST!.......2007-01-09

Well, thats all I have to say about that! Awesome CD. I do not actually have THIS CD, but I do have "Crowned Unholy," which is this entire album along with a DVD with a live performance from Karlsruhe,Germany (which is great if you want a DVD that you will watch nonstop all the time) All of the songs are great but my favorites have to be "Under the Whip" "Death is the Hunter" and "Death Metal Holocaust." Either ways, if you want the DVD or not, this album is chock full of death/thrash that will leave you hurting and thirsting for more. So BUY IT ALREADY!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the genre's Crowning achievements, for sure.......2006-12-21

Quite a while ago, I bought "Crowned In Terror" without hearing anything off of it first, and without even know for sure what kind of music The Crown played. But once I popped this disc in and heard the second song (which is the first real song; the first track is just an orchestral intro), I was absolutely hooked.

This album has everything I love about thrash/death/melodic death metal: catchy, almost brutal songs composed of big, lumbering riffs, quick, cracking drums, and gruff, raspy (somewhat high pitched) death metal vocals. (Original vocalist Johan Lindstrand sat out during the recording of this album, The Crown's fifth, and the frontman from the godly, seminal melodeath band At The Gates stepped in, in his place.)

The title track (which is the aforementioned second track, but first real song on here) combines deft, walloping drums beats with crushing riffs. "Under The Whip" starts out with a catchy, skipping rhythm and powerful, machine gun double bass drumming, but then segues to become a strong, churning (almost steamrolling) rhythm. "World Below" is another highlight (it features fast, chug and churning guitar hooks and a winding, ascending and descending solo), as is the blisteringly fast eighth track, "(I Am) Hell", which boasts a fiery, almost blinding guitar onslaught. One can't help but pay special attention to the three, back-to-back guitar solos on "Death Is The Hunter," and the album closer, "Death Metal Holocaust", is an ultra heavy rocker which is backed by buzzsaw riffing and very busy double bass drumming.

But "Crowned In Terror" isn't all-out mayhem. "The Seed Of Darkness" features well-placed spots of clean (almost spoken word), backing vocals, and songs like "Out For Blood" are more mid-paced and restrained. Plus, of course, this disc has an abundance of melodic guitar solos (the solos on here sometimes sound more like it's from a keyboard than a guitar), so several (maybe even most) of these songs have at least a semi-melodic edge to them. And, lastly, there are a few classical guitar interludes which were probably thrown in to break up the monotony without killing the record's momentum.

Admittedly, "Crowned In Terror" will probably only appeal to you if you are already a rabid fan of this genre. But if you are, this is a must-buy. It will undoubtedly have you saying it's the best album At The Gates will never make again, and The Crown are definitely a front-running candidate in the "kings of latter-day thrash" race.

5 out of 5 stars hands down my all time favorite.......2005-08-19

This cd is by far my favorite ever of any style. since it's release in 2002 i am on my 3rd copy, which is really saying something because i treat my music like newborns. it is really hard for me to put my finger on what it is exactly that strikes such a deep chord in me about this cd. it is by far one of the most brutal, shredding albums ever. but at the same time it has its share of goetenburg and thrash solos and riffing. the production is raw and dirty sounding, but in an extremely polished slick way. tomas linberg is undoubtedly the best screamer in the game, and on this he is at the top of his game. the drums are downright mechanical, being able to switch from krisiun/origin style footwork to faster lombardo or at the gates style fills. this album manages to blend punk, death metal, thrash, and even a smidge of grind. check it out, it's not the favorite of an avid music snob for no reason

5 out of 5 stars Brutal Death/Thrash Metal Album.......2005-05-12

This album never fails to deliver, very brutal, just one hell of a killer record

5 out of 5 stars Damn!.......2005-02-13

I just bought this cd today and I love every song! From start to finish this cd smokes! That's a rare feet in my eyes. I am new to the death/black metal scene, and this is by far the best cd I have bought (Death's "the sound of perseverance" a close 2nd.).
If you are just getting into this type of music also, and want something that will blow you away!! Check this cd out. I promise you want be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Good, sullen background music.......2004-09-29

Very dark, very moody, very long. 8 tracks that clock in over an hour. My Dying Bride type misery. The listener is hung upon passages that sway in a hypnotic lull, or crawl along with a sludgy slow metallic crunch. Vocals toggle between a deep smooth vampire-like caress and a demonic belch of torn vocal chords. The band first made their mark with a few releases on Relapse, but some member changes and a hiatus to restructure has found this release on Dark Symphonies. The ebb and flow of this darkened yet melodic creation is quite emotional in structure and delivery. Indulge only if you have the stamina to wade through a couple of 9+ minute tracks. Since it gets lost in itself often, the listener's attention can wander. This makes good, sullen background music to set a dim mood.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-07-12

Morgion continues to make brilliant music, and this is a worthy follow up to the godlike Solinari.

5 out of 5 stars Doom at it's absolute finest.......2004-05-04

Let me just start this off by saying, this is the first time I have been so floored by an album that I absolutely had to share my experience by reviewing it. The moment I received my package from amazon, I took out this cd, turned out the lights and shut the blinds, put it in the dvd player (can't go wrong with home theatre sound), lied down, hit play, and shut my eyes. I was expecting something powerful, something beautiful and moving in a dark, deep way, and that's exactly what I got.
The songs flow together, in fact, I didn't realize the first track was over until I looked up and saw I was halfway through the third song. Not to say that it's too repetitive, or that all the songs sound the same, because it's not and they don't. It's just one of those cds that's infinately better when absorbed as a whole. Excellent production, the various elements are blended perfectly. The addition of clean vocals has been done very well, also.
By the end of my listening session, I regretted having to return to reality. This music transported me, it lifted me and tore me down, it flew me through dark forests and giant chasms, flowing water and pounding beasts. Very rarely do I get such a first impression and I highly, highly recommend this to anyone that can appreciate the beauty of darkness. This is not background music, this is not music that you play while distracted by other things... this is real, origional, and powerful.

3 out of 5 stars For Diehards Only.......2004-08-29

Not that Crowned Unholy does not totally kick ass, but unless you are a diehard The Crown fan, or one who does not own Crowned in Terror, it is probably not worth purchasing. It pains me to say it, but this revamped version of Crowned in Terror does not feature enough new sounds to merit forking over 18 hard earned dollars. If you are a diehard, then by all means buy it. In case you are one who has not heard, this is not just Crowned in Terror w/ Johan in place of Lindberg. The entire album was re-recorded and re-produced! Whereas Crowned in Terror has a Death Race King feel to it, Crowned Unholy better resembles the sound of Posessed 13. The bonus DVD's biggest asset is its rarity, since I am unaware of any other formal video footage of The Crown. In a way, the DVD seems a little boring, due to the very small and cramped venue in which it was recorded, but remains fun to own and watch.

5 out of 5 stars The Crown - Crowned Unholy.......2004-08-26

First off, ever since I heard Crowned In Terror I always imagined what this would have sounded like with Johan singing, and this was no dissapointment. Crowned Unholy is exactly what I expected it to sound like and i suggest any true fan of The Crown pick this cd up. As for the DVD, the quality of the audio is excellent, but the video looks like it could have been better, but it seems to have some added effects that didnt work too well, but is still worth more than the price of a single cd
