Curtis Mayfield was as much social conscience for the '60s and '70s as Chuck D was for the '80s and '90s. Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down when a lighting scaffold fell on him at a 1990 Brooklyn concert. Though he can no longer move his arms and hands, he has continued to write songs simply by singing lyrics and melodies to his family and staff. New World Order is both the first full album of all-new Mayfield material since 1990's Take It to the Streets and the best since 1977's Short Eyes soundtrack. The Most Inspiring Album Ever !.......2006-12-31

"New World Order" released by a paralyzed Curtis Mayfield is laden with solacing, spiritual and conciliatory songs that resonate with love and soul. Divine intervention was at work when Curtis sung these songs with his gentle, yearning, wondrous and peerless voice. All the songs are dynamic and imperative. This recording exemplifies the triumph of a special human spirit, namely, Curtis Mayfield. It might be impossible to ever hear any recording more inspiring than "New World Order". I think of Curtis Mayfield every time the world's greatest living guitarist, Jeff Beck, plays his instrumental version of "People Get Ready". Curtis Mayfield will always be rememberred as a legend replete with talent, class and compassion. "New World Order" was his last CD and it was rife with vocal and instrumental virtuosity of the utmost quality !

I am a white male that listens to primarily Hard music. This along with superfly has made me a dedicated fan. It is haunting and musically fantastic. He recorded this album while paralyzed in bed.

6 years before the release of this album, during a preperation for a concert on August 14, 1990. a Light rig fall over Curtis making him paralized from the neck down. Curtis was hardly ever able to speak after that accident.
Yet, he releases "New World Order" 6 years after his accident.
The singing was done in very small parts in the studio, until the completion of all the album. Curtis was singing bit by bit while laying on his back.
Now go and listen to this CD. I am sure you will agree: Curtis is the King of Soul

Curtis finale is a good one.......2004-01-18

In the early 70s Curtis released some awesome soul albums. However his career got away from him and tragically, in 1990, during a live show Curtis suffered a horrible injury leaving him paralysed from the neck down.

However paralysis couldn't restrict the genius of Curtis Mayfield. In 1996, pushing 60 and with 6 years out of the game, he got back in the studio with a team of producers to help him out and record this comeback album. The long break must've done Curtis good because he sounds revitalised here. This album is hitting throughout and the Curtis vocals are strong and hold up. The sound is fresh and the jams fonk hard. 'Back To Living Again' is an awesome upbeat & inspriring number, as is the title track, a real substantial number, where Curtis shares words of wisdom over an ominous sounding groove.

This whole album is strong and the mans positivity and always uplifting messages are contagious. Overall a great showcase for Curtis' talents. I would recommend it along with 'Curtis', 'Roots', and the soundtrack 'Superfly'. R.I.P. Curtis.

In his forty odd years as musician, Chicago native Curtis Mayfield career took his fans to mountain and back, and we are all better people for the journey. It will be sometime in the future when Mayfield's considerable contributions to popular music will be fully realized. Co-founder of the Impressions with Jerry Butler, Curtis' deep roots in early doo-wop and latin music is reflected in their early chart-topper, "Gypsy Woman". Butler left the Impressions and Mayfield took the reigns and wrote and produced the long streak of gospel influenced hits associated the their classic era. Songs like "Amen", "People Get Ready" and "Keep On Pushing" became touchstones of the civil rights movement and songs of hope for the downtrodden. By the end of the sixties, when Mayfield went solo, his songcraft developed a deep harmonic complexity and along with Marvin Gaye, Curtis became one of great topical composers of the era. He embraced the newly emerging funk music, pioneered by James Brown and his perfoming ensemble struck dance ready groove as Mayfield became one of great guitar innovators of the seventies. He began experimenting with a wah-wah pedal and using sonic atomospheric washes of sound, as a counterpoint to the rock steady bass grooves. Subsequently his guitar playing became widely imitated by both rythym and blues and rock and roll guitarists. In 1972, Mayfield wrote the soundtrack to "Superfly" a small movie aimed at exploiting a black target audience. The album is arguably the best movie soundtrack of the 1970s and Mayfield directed his energies to writting soundtracks throughout most of the Seventies including an underrated collboration with Aretha Franklin for the movie "Sparkle". Curtis was also a mezmerizing live performer and the album "Curtis Live" is a showcase of the silky Mayfield falsetto, his highly stylized guitar playing and his genius as a bandleader. By the beginning of the Eighties, Mayfield's popularity was declining due to the rise of hip-hop but Mayfield continued to tour and record. In 1990, Mayfield was seriously injured when a lighting rig fell on him during a concert in Brooklyn. Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down as a result.

There are feats of artistic determination that stagger the imagination of us mere mortals. Henri Matisse became so ill he could no longer paint at his easel, so he improvised colorful and brillant cut-outs of scraps of paper while bedridden. Michaelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel on his back, atop a precarious network of scaffolding that rose from the floor nearly three stories to the ceiling. To record "New World Order", Curtis Mayfield had to lie flat on his back with a boom microphone and record a single line at a time. It is a stunning testament to the will of a man who had been all but written off as an artist, because of his injuries. Most of the songs here had to be sung and written down by friends and relatives. Curtis' soprano is as smooth as ever and he is still capable of sliding into his trademark falsetto. The guitars and synthesiers are played by a group of proxy musicians who are obviously familar with the Mayfield syle. The arrangements have the indeliable stamp of a Mayfield production. The songs are in the classic mode of Mayfield's socially conscious era of songcraft. Mayfield deals with the gap between expectations and reality as he appropriates the right-wing catchphrase "New World Order" and transforms it into a song of hope. "The Got Dang Song" is a bubbling reggae number that sounds like it could have been written by Bob Marley, his Jamaican soul brother. "Just A Little Bit Of Love" revisits the Mayfield's lifelong theme of redemption through love. "Back To Living Again" is a song where Curtis comes to terms with his injury and is, as always, a beacon of optimisim. Considered as a whole, "New World Order" is among the finest of Mayfield's recordings and is a stunning coda to a brilliant career.

boy, this is the PRT i was waiting for. i think they became even harder in BLACK BUSINESS first (never heard that one). this one is ESSENTIAL from beginning to end. where in the universe is PRT, man? these days, we really need them to break us off!!!!

Strictly For The Love Of This {5 Stars}.......2006-12-02

Like most of the reviews here state, this is classic material right here. You pretty much know what you're going to get from PRT every time out - dope beats and tight rhymes that mostly revolve around the ideals of the 5% Nation. The grossly underrated Wise Intelligent rips every track on the album. The beats are hard with no frills or gimmicks (the sound is what I like to call "tribal boom bap"). NWO was all but ignored by the mainstream due to the growing cancer known as the jiggy era. Those that were paying attention know that this album is great from start to finish. Joints like "Word Iz Life", "Gods, Earths, & 85ers", and "Miss Ghetto" are classics in my mind. As a matter of fact, every song on this album is dope. No wackness to be found here - and that can be said about any PRT release (all of their albums are top notch). You won't need your skip button for this one. Just take the disc, pop it in, and let it ride.

There aren't any flaws on this album. Well, at least none that I can think of. As far as I'm concerned, this is a perfect hip hop record. The songs are great, the interludes are well placed without being contrived or unoriginal, and the guest appearances all come off well (even Pras (from the Fugees) makes an appearance and does a decent job -- and I can't stand him). Basically, you'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong here.

New World Order is probably the most well rounded of the PRT albums and it still sounds fresh 10 years after its release. I recommend adding this album, as well as the rest of their discography, to your collection. Also, check out Wise Intelligent's outstanding solo joint (Killin' U For Fun) for more knowledge/ill verses.

PRT are on the most slept on groups in the history of hiphop, period. Similarly, Wise Intelligent is one of the most slept on Mc's ever, which is just too unfortunate in itself since he displays one of the most, well wise, educated & natural styles I've ever heard. PRT are mainly a Political/Socially conscious, pro-black group, who aint about the bullish and straight drop knowledge to everybody who bothers to listen to them. I know its a cliche, but Wise does "speak the truth". This is the 4th and last group album, and imo is the best one yet. With featurings from Mr.Hipop himself; KRS ONE, The Fugees, Brother J, Nine, Jr Reid & others the album stays consistent lyrically, with no disapoinments. Similarly, all the beats on the album are crazy..and suited to each and every concept. Aint no fillers on here! It's one big lesson about the USA's government systems, its ethics & everything else that they find un-acceptable trying to live as a black man. Brace Yourself, Open your mind and peep New World Order ( & PRT's other work). You owe it to yourself. 1996 Classic.

First of all the Nation of Islam members, PRTs is one of Hip-Hop's most criminally slept-on crews. This is their 4th and last album and in a rare feat in Hip-Hop, 4th time's a charm...their first 3 LP's are all amazing - but with NWO they went out with a prolific bang. They truly took the political/social-concious torch from Public Enemy, 'cause when PE was fallin' off, PRT was blowin' up.

Everything about this album screams masterpiece. The underlying message within this album took me a few spins to fully appreciate, once I got it this album became even doper.
The beats are incredible, the best they've ever handled. The lyrics, track themes & skits are all very well thought out and Wise Intelligent rips the mic harder and more passionately than I've ever heard him. The guest spots are the shining stars of Hip-Hop's social-concious/political/afrocentric/5 %er scenes: KRS-One, The Fugees, Nine, Brother J (X-Clan) and more.

Bottom Line: This album is a masterpiece, if PRTs weren't so slept-on everyone would recognize it as so. Every Hip-Hop head should own this album (along with the previous 3 PRT LPs). 5 stars, Peace.

best Poor Righteous Teachers album.......2004-10-15

Best album of the highly underrated Poor Righteous Teachers.
Everything about this album is great. Especially the first few songs and of course the song with KRS ONE. Word is bond is my favorite song. The album is a real recomendation at any cost!

Gorgeous soaring melody and rhythm.......2006-12-26

World (The Price of Love) is some of the most beautiful music to come into my head ever! The remixes do something to my brain almost like an addiction. I have a few copies of this CD, and the first few weeks that I got it I could not stop listening to it.This is soaring synth and melody like I never heard before. I think it's better than True Faith, maybe the most beautiful New Order has ever done. I'm trying to think of something comparable, maybe Red Letter Day, To Step Aside, or, currently, Minimal by Pet Shop Boys come close. Some of the remixes on "The Rest of New Order" might come close. Maybe.

"Just A Little Bit Of Love" revisits the Mayfield's lifelong theme of redemption through love. "Back To Living Again" is a song where Curtis comes to terms with his injury and is, as always, a beacon of optimisim. Considered as a whole, "New World Order" is among the finest of Mayfield's recordings and is a stunning coda to a brilliant career.

You have to get this cd right now if you love bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, Dirty Vegas, The Faint and anything "classic" Alternative. Forget about VNV Nation, Apoptigma Bezerk, or Covenant -- this, is what the future of synth-pop-muzik should sound like. Croc Shop have been making this unique brand of innovative electronic(A) industrial since 1994 and it gets better each & every album I buy of these guys. HIGHLY Reccommended !!!

A Bold Step Ahead in the 'Electro' Direction.......2002-12-17

Previous Crocodile Shop cds have been brilliant pieces of "Art" yet sometimes in sacrifice of the 'song'... it seems as if now that they shortend the name to Croc Shop (from 'Crocodile') they also 'edited' the overall style of the bands as well. There are still all the great dark melodies that the band has offered in the past; but now the vocals are laid on top of a more solid & bouncy electronic(a?) foundation. Think: New Order meets the Underworld with a dash of Front 242 thrown in for old times sake!

Don't let the title fool you, this is not a release of new 2002 mixes, rather a re-release of the out of print (in the UK) CD single with a brand new b-side. Tracks 1 & 3 are from the original single release back in 1991.

Track 2, "Such a Good Thing," is a brand spanking new track that the BBC used during World Cup 2002 coverage. IMO, the new track is fabulous. Upon first listen, it was OK, but like most great New Order tracks it gets better and better every time I hear it. It's vintage New Order, kind of Brotherhood vs. Technique, and IMO worth the cost of this CD by itself.
