Editorial Reviews

Noreaga has been a prime peddler of street-level drama and ghetto anthems ever since his 1997 debut (with Capone), The War Report. While his solo debut, N.O.R.E., lacks the sheer fatalism of his Queens, New York, peers Nas and Mobb Deep, Noreaga is unrepentant in his thugged-out exultation of fast money, fast love, and fast life. Because of his penchant for penning confusing tales that tend toward the cryptic (see the title track), Noreaga might appeal only to an audience eager to listen to stories of project life--just so long as they don't have to live it for themselves. Mostly mediocre production also weakens the album. It's only on two tracks, "Mathematics (Esta Loca)" and "Body in the Trunk," that we glimpse the potential for Noreaga's gifts. --Oliver Wang

With Busta, Nas, Big Punisher, and the mighty Kool G Rap guesting, you'd expect at least the odd killa track; what you get is great rapping ... sullied by unimaginative production.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

    3 out of 5 stars God's Favorite.......2006-02-14

Recognized for keeping a biography of Manuel Noriega with him at all times, the then 16 year old Victor Santiago was christened after the Panamanian General who he emulated while serving time for attempted murder. In prison he met his present day cohort Capone during bible class. He became well known in the game during a time of the media frenzied east coast, west coast dispute with his verse on "LA, LA" the response to Tha Dogg Pound's dis record "New York, New York." Later in the year Capone -N- Noreaga was signed to Tommy Boy Records and released their debut album "The War Report". Five years and three albums later, N.O.R.E. made his way from the label that he claims "sucks" to the Godfather of rap labels "Def Jam Records". Recorded in just six weeks "God's Favorite" is a return to focus for N.O.R.E. who says he wasn't focused when his last solo album "N.O.R.E." was being recorded. The album looks to be a home run with The Neptunes, Irv Gotti, and Swizz Beats conducting about half of the album's production.

The album begins in a very peculiar way with two straight intro's "Hit Me Slime" and "God's Favorite". The third track is his single and current banger "Nothing" which is one of five tracks that were produced by the super producers The Neptunes. The next song "Grimey" isn't anything new since it was on the Violator compilation but the fire that the Queens MC spits on the blazin' track and the energetic beat that The Neptunes hooked up keeps your head knockin' back and forth relentlessly. "Mr. CEO" is dedicated to none other then the CEO who won't let him eat and handle his business in the rap game because he straight out of the hood. Irv Gotti produced "Life My Life" which features Ja Rule but he only does the hook. The song isn't anything spectacular and is the first song on the album that won't provide you much replay value.

You know it isn't an album without the humor which is what N.O.R.E. is known for, but he does tone that down and switch gears on the track "Black Clouds" where N.O.R.E. displays his honesty with the people saying "I admit Melvin Flynt my soul wasn't there/recorded in the studio my mind wasn't clear/." After Black Clouds the album slides into a slump with very mediocre tracks that aren't really worth the listen. The album does in fact conclude very well with one of the highpoints from the album that is the "Nameanuheard Remix" which features Capone, Cam'Ron, Fat Joe, and Cassidy. Also the Bonus Track "The Life Of A...(Gangsta) by Capone will get Capone fans eager for his solo album.

N.O.R.E.'s "God Favorite" maybe his most focused album but it seems as it was his most un prepared work to date. The consistency and replay value of this joint just isn't on it. The lack of diversity in production from The Neptunes, Irv Gotti, and Swizz Beats, and his set of producers take away from the quality of the album. The crew love that he shows towards his Thugged Out Militant doesn't assist the album very well as it seems N.O.R.E. got sluggish with the album and just threw on filler tracks which features his crew. N.O.R.E. is better off being Noreaga with his partner Capone for group albums and not solo's. The album is good for a laugh here and there but for the most part it's just N.O.R.E. talking noise for 70 minutes.

    Pleather

    * Always 100% dog-free-guaranteed.

    * Designer Ty Bowers calls pleather "the wild kingdom of synthetic fabrics. It can look like snakeskin [and] can be dyed any color."

    * As the L.A. Times says, pleather "beckons to budget-conscious trendoids who want to save money and animal lives." A pair of leather pants can cost $500 or more, while pleather pants can be found for under 100 bucks.

    * These days, it's easy to accessorize and save lives. One quick trip to the mall (or online shopping spree), and you can score tons of great synthetic shoes, bags, belts, and more-in stylin' brands like Steve Madden, Unlisted, and Mudd. Click here for a free copy of PETA's "Shopping Guide to Nonleather Products."

    Leather

    * While most leather comes from cows, it can also be made from ... dogs and cats! In the Philippines and Korea, dog leather is routinely marked "cow skin" for export purposes. When you wear leather, you can never be sure whose skin you're in.

    * To make real snakeskin bags and shoes, reptiles are ripped from their jungle homes, often skinned alive, then left to suffer for hours, or even days, until they die.

    * Buy leather, and animals pay the price-with their lives. Production lines move too fast for slaughterhouse workers to ensure that all animals are dead before being skinned and having their legs cut off.

    Britney Spears-
    Pretty in Pleather

Add pop princess Britney Spears to the growing list of stars, including Pamela Anderson, who are singing the praises of pleather.

In her "Oops ... I Did It Again" video, she slipped into a skin-hugging, scarlet pleather bodysuit.

    What Are Your Pleather Picks?
What are some of your favorite animal-friendly fashions? Is it your "mock Docs" (leather-free Dr. Martens), your classic canvas Converse All Stars, or your pink plastic Hello Kitty purse? Tell us your top pick-we may feature them in a future issue of Grrr!
What are your favorite brands of synthetic shoes, bags, belts, etc.? Here are some of ours to help you get started, but list any brands you like: Delia's, Rocket Dog, Funky Chunk, l.e.i.

Where do you get your gear? At the mall, from an online shopping site (send us the Web address!), or someplace else?

Even if you've never thought about leather vs. pleather before, chances are you've already got some fab fakes in your closet! Take a look and tell us what you find-whether it's a divine vinyl wallet or pleather shoes. If you're not sure, look for these four magic words on the label: "All man-made materials."

    3 out of 5 stars "God's Favorite" 3.5 star album.......2005-07-10

The last time I heard, NORE was supposed to have an album from Rocafella called `One Fan A Day', but judgin' by the lastest issue of XXL, he's not apart of the ROC, or Carter Administration like they're callin' it now. As for this 2002album though, is was a solid release complete w/ ALL of NORE's charisma, and some pretty heavy beats. He was never a supreme lyricist, but people have never hated in the way he flips his words, pretty much in the same boat as Cam'Ron-except with NORE's slightly high tone, you never wanna put yourself o sleep. This album is full of headnodders, including the hit single"Nothin", one of the best Neptune beats on "Grimey", along w/ two other Neptune joints of "Head Bussa" and "Full Mode". One songs people might hate on though is "Love Ya Moms" w/ Capone, Mus-N-Maze, Gold, & Complexions. Overall it's meant to be a dedication songs, but lyrically it's still hard enough to NOT be mistakin' for any P. Diddy type stuff. I think "Banned from the Club" w/ Mus-N-Maze was on some other NORE cd, but I'm not mad at it for bein' on here. The only downside to this album was that it starts off w/ TWO skits, and some songs ("Wanna Be Like Him" w/ Mashonda, "Live My Life" w/ Ja Rule, "Consider This" w/ Kelis) could have been left off the album, cause they're pretty much crappy filly material. Hopefully NORE will be able to find a decent label to hook up with, cause he's able to put out good radio songs while not sacrificing any street cred.

4 out of 5 stars 3rd solo is his worst -- but still decent.......2005-06-25

After 3 years since his last solo, about 6 months of push back dates (leading to the fact I heard half the album before it came out), and a move to Def Jam, this was supposed to be his best album and best selling (his other 2 solo's went gold (and I'd give them 4.5 stars) as did both his group albums with Capone which I'd give both 5 stars, and of them 4 albums), I'd have to say this is his worst yet, barely getting 4 stars. Of the 16 songs (1 is a Capone solo) 1 is almost a classic, 3 I skip, 1 is ok, the others are good. Guests are on every song (about half just do the hooks) so you don't get a lot of NORE"s wild eccentric rapping style. Production is not the best, and bad on a few songs that brings the quality down a little. Neptunes did 5 songs, Swizz Beats & NPK each did 3 songs, EZ Elpee, Irv Gotti, L.E.S., Yogi, Kyze all do 1 song. A good album to have for his fans but far rfrom his best work.

Noreaga's First Album in 1998. I like this album man. It brings back so much memories. I remember listining to this album after I listened to the War Report. But N.O.R.E. the album is RAW! But not better then The Reunion. That brings back so much memories. Noreaga is mad lucky to have Styles and Jadakiss on that song. And with Big Pun (The nicest Puerto Rican Rapper LENGEND in the WORLD!) And with Nature. Nature is always with Noreaga. Off that Fantastic Four. Cam'Ron was there too. They should of had Big Pun on Fantastic Four on The Professional Part Two or have him making a Chourus after someone is done singing. Aw man! Noreaga has to do a mixtape. Because he is too raw! He's mad raw! And I give this mixtape Five Stars because he got mad tracks. It dosen't have to be more then 16, but it better be raw. And that's what Noreaga has. And some of you haters be drinking hateraid. Yall think he dosen't make sense. He does!

      4 out of 5 stars Hot Beats!.......2007-02-03

I have other NORE CDs and I will add this to the ones I like. The beats are great and NORE flow is diffrent but you still get the Raw substance that you are use to from him. Many guest available to give you a taste of other artist trying their hand in Reggeton.

5 out of 5 stars Off the Hook!!! ( Stop Hatin on reggaeton).......2006-12-25

I'm tired to see people disrespect Reggaeton artists just because they ain't feelin it, then leave it. This is just an another Great album for Nore to add in his already long list, if the next one is just as tight I will definitely cop.

1 out of 5 stars Its All About EL DINERO!.......2006-11-09

This dude is all about the money trying to cash in on the reggaeton and latinos this dude should just stick to what he knows best and thats not reggaeton.I rather get the new wisin Y yandel !ES TODO!

      4 out of 5 stars Tight beats..4 stars....Lame raps from N.O.R.E....2 stars.......2006-09-13

First off I'd like to say as a fluent Spanish speaker and one of the biggest fans of the Reggaeton movement, if this review was based on just the score I give for the beats and production it would receive 4 stars. However, since it ain't, I must give this album a 4 for production and a 2 for the sorry raps from N.O.R.E. I apologize to all his fans, but c'mon y'all, dude raps way better in English! All of us fluent spanish speaking latinos know this for a fact. In one of his verses he says "Yo quiere" when it should be "Yo quiero". There are other verses that show he clearly is barely learning to speak Spanish. And a lot show he doesn't know proper grammar either. He should have brushed up on his Spanish before releasing any reggaeton material. As a rapper and latino he should be ashamed of himself. Other than that all the guest spots from the big names in reggaeton and sick production are really what make this album good, not N.O.R.E. himself. These tracks should have been given to Daddy Yankee or Don Omar.

2 out of 5 stars REGGAETON CD .......2006-09-13

Ok I am cool with the reggaeton sound and the movement but this guy goes and gives us an ENTIRE cd of reggaeton. Gone are the days of NORE the rapper he COMPLETELY flips the script on this cd and I didnt see it coming, thats all I am saying. He didnt have any singles for reason.

4 out of 5 stars nice mixtape from N.O.R.E........2007-02-06

After being relatively quiet and really not dropping anything special since the CNN "Reunion" album (I think " Gods Favorite" only deserved 3.5 stars) and after his B-S Raggaeton album, N.O.R.E. finally makes a step in the right direction. Since his "One Fan A Day" album was hit with numerous pushbacks and may never see the light of day, he released this which has a few tracks from that album. With 12 tracks and 13 songs (# 2 is 2 songs), it's ratehr short at just over 38 minutes, but you get 2 almost classics, 5 good songs, 3 ok songs, and 3 that are borderline ok/pretty good. Guests are on 8 of the 13 songs and are mostly the normals from his camp. Production is great on some songs and average at best on others. Scram Jones does 3 songs, DJ Cut Throat, Midi Mafia, Heatmakerz all do 2 songs, EZ Elpee, Kyze, Vin teh Chin and Militainment all do 1 song. A nice album for his fans to grab.

      #1 - 7.5 (16 bars)
#2 - 9.5 (f/ Nature, DWNLZY, Maze, Cardan, Musolini, Baby Sis -- great beat)
      #2 (2nd song) - 8.5 ("Cuts From NORE")
      #3 - 9 (f/ Musolini, DWNLZY, Nature -- nice Journey sample used)
      #4 - 7.5 (f/ Nature -- they rap back & forth for a lil over a minute)
      #5 - 7.5 (f/ Nicole Wray)
      #6 - 9 (f/ Beanie Sigel -- deep song w/ nice beat)
#7 - 9.5 (f/ Nature, Young Chris, Baby Sis, DWNLZY -- tight beat)

      #9 - 7

      Amazon.com

As one half of the Queensbridge rap duo Capone 'n' Noreaga, Victor "Noreaga" Santiago's street credibility is based on his ability to rhyme over catchy, head-nodding beats while utilizing his own street slanguage, underdig (read: you understand)? Employing the services of knob twiddlers du jour the Neptunes to create sure-fire dance-floor hits, Pharrell Williams bangs out yelzabulb (read: off the hook) drum programs on the dated "Grimey" and the anthemic "Head Bussa." The Norebonics routine gets a little tired on "Nahmeanuheard" (and its remix featuring Capone, Cam'ron, and Fat Joe), as does the XXX-rated exercise in juvenilia on "Big D," featuring emcee turned pornographer Akinyele and foskeeezy (read: foul girl) Heather Hunter. But N.O.R.E. proves that he's not completely vacant on the eloquent "Live My Life," featuring a crooning Ja Rule on the chorus. With phat tracks laced by EZ Elpee and a rejuvenated Swizz Beatz, N.O.R.E. has no problem keeping things shamone (read: moving). --Dalton Higgins

      5 out of 5 stars The future.......2003-06-16

Track 19 explains the whole album cause everyone is waiting for Capone album. This is the future of hiphop, the future of nonstop theft and bootlegging.

      4 out of 5 stars It's NORE, younowhatimean!!!.......2003-05-16

This CD is bangin, please believe me. The cuts to listen to are "Nothin," "Big D," "Headbussa," and "Consider This."

      1 out of 5 stars Grimey?????.......2002-07-14

Noreaga used to be an ill grimy MC with albums such as "the War Report"(classic) and his first solo Lp. Noreaga always talks about how grimey he is, but all he does on this record is rap over jiggy Neptune beats in an attempt to make club songs. Doing cheesey songs with R&B singers and Ja Rule is about as un-grimy and commercial as it gets. Noreaga is a SELL-OUT. Save your money and buy CNN's War report, because this album is terrible.

3 out of 5 stars Same Ol' Same..........BUT................2002-07-06

Track #3 (Nothin) is HOT...... Thats definately a slammin track. Grimey isnt too bad and there are a few other tracks that are OK but other than that Id have to say its been done a billion times before and even the beats sound like the same ol' ish on most of the tracks. Also Nore isnt exactly a lyrical genius but hes slightly interesting and funny at some points. Its definately worth the check out if you like Da Shlimey Grimey... NahMeanUHeard?

      4 out of 5 stars Weak Production.......2002-07-05

I am a big CNN fan so I picked this up as soon as it came out, but the production just doesn't help Noreaga out. Personally, I think Capone is the better MC of the two, but Nore is a good MC. But, he doesn't get very good production on several of the songs despite the fact that big names like The Neptunes, Swizz Beatz, Kyze, Irv Gotti, SPK, and LES do the production. There are still several good tracks, like Grimey, Nahmeanuheard, Mr Ceo, Love Ya Moms, Head Bussa, Banned from Another Club, and Nahmeanuheard Remix. The Life of A.. is a good song, but is just Capone. Live My Life and Black Clouds are both songs that grew on me-I didn't like them at first, but after a couple listens they are better. Capone makes the best guest spots, but Dwnlzy, Musaliny, Maze, Gold, Troy Outlaw, Ja Rule, Final Chapter, Cam'ron, Fat Joe, Complexions, and Cassidy all have good moments. Overall, it is better than Melvin Flynt, but still a cut below N.O.R.E. and well below the two CNN albums.
