4 out of 5 stars 4.5 star Hits album.......2006-10-11

With only 3 albums in the early 90's, the 4 man group from North Carolina, Jodeci, was one of the best R&B groups of their time, and maybe one of the best ever. Being a fan of rap I don't have many R&B CD's (maybe a dozen) but this is one I had to own. With 16 songs, you get some of their best as a group. Trax 1-4 are from "Forever My Lady" (1991), Track #5 is off MTV Unplegged album and is a remake of a Stevie Wonder song, Trax 6-9 are from "Diary of a Mad Band" (1993) and trax 12 & 13 are remixes of songs off that album, and trax 10, 11, 14 ,16 are from "The Show, The Hotel, The Afterparty" (1995) and #15 is a remix off that album. of the 16, 2 are classics, 1 is almost a lcassic, 4 are ok, the rest are good songs. I'd have liked to shear a few K-Ci & JoJo songs on here but I guess they only did Jodeci songs that all 4 members were a part of. Production is nice as well, DeVante Swing did 13 songs and Dalvun DeGrate did 3.

3 out of 5 stars IT'S OK...........2006-06-14

I ALREADY OWN "FOREVER MY LADY" ALSO & THIS COMPILATION COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. THERE ARE KEY REMIXES MISSING! "COME & TALK TO ME" (REMIX), "I'M STILL WAITING" (SWING MOB REMIX) & "FEENIN'" (ERICK SERMON REMIX). THE REMIXES WERE THE BEST SOUNDING TRACKS OF JODECI'S TENURE ON THE CHARTS! AND THEY ARE NOT HERE! WHAT A SHAME....BUT IT'S A NICE COMPILATION FOR THE AVERAGE LISTENER....

5 out of 5 stars Classic R&B Group's Grestest .......2006-02-14

This compilation is very good, and it has all of the hits, from their first hit in 1991, Forever My Lady, to their last hit before they broke up, Love U 4 Life. This compilation is very good, as Jodeci set their standard of the meaning of a good R&B group. (Boyz II Men did not set a standard, their style was used before by New Edition)To this Day, Jodeci has influenced acts like 112, H-Town, Jagged Edge, and most importantly Dru Hill.

One problem with this compilation is that they really should've added on a 2nd disc, to include K-ci and Jojo's hits as a duo, instead of releasing their own greatest hits, which was really a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars Memories.............2005-11-29

WOW! What a great CD! It is so hard to review a greatest hits CD at the title says it all: GREATEST HITS!!! They had some of the biggest hip/hop & R&B hits of the 90's and they are just as great when I crank them up today. Each song has a memory or a story tagged to them taking me back to that moment in time. It's all here....not missing a beat. Some of the remixes we could have lived without but that still does not take away from all the great hits that are on here. They have all their great slow jams from "Come And Talk To Me", "Forever My Lady" to "Freek N You" & "What About Us".

This is a must have for those of you who jammed out to these songs when the originally came out or for those of you who just appreciate good ol' R&B. Truly a gem!

5 out of 5 stars STAAAAY, FOR A LITTLE WHILE!!!.......2005-11-29

I am "Feenin" for the days when a guy group could sing!!! These bad boys were "IT" back in tha day!! Every song reminds you of brothers seriously singing to their girl. All the classic Jodeci songs: "Stay", "Come and Talk to Me", "Feenin" "Lately" are all on here. The only one missing is "Ride & Slide" from the "Diary of a Mad Band" album, but hey, I have that album so I'm ok with it missing from this complitation.

Here's to Jodeci! Come back fellas!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to their classic debut..........................2007-05-10

This cd is still banging. Teddy and the Brothers Hall brought in the decade of the 1990s in high style. New Jack Swing is in full effect, but this album is further enhanced by Aaron Hall's improved vocals.

The Jams:
Teddy's Jam 2
Do Me Right
Lets Chill
Tease Me Tonight
The Future
Smile
Gotta Be A Leader
Let's Stay Together (My personal favorite)

5 out of 5 stars Surpasses the first disc which isn't easy.......2007-01-05

Guy's sophmore CD,The Future easily surpassed their self-titled debut and this isn't an easy feat.considering the excllence of the first album. Guy brings so much show man ship and grinding, forceful funk into "Teddy's Jam 2" and "Her" you can't help but dance. One of the group's biggest singles Wanna Get With You still get my hype every time I hear it. Slow jams as "Do Me Right" and "Tease Me Tonight" are easily on par with the classic Yearning For Your Love, Where Did Love Go and Smile that I would have loved to hear them live. However the slow jam Let's Chill is without a doubt one of the strongest slow jams to be released in 1990 and still remains a classic to this day. The Future is one of the more appealing -- and certainly more authentic -- examples of "new jack swing a music genre that I wish would come back.

4 out of 5 stars A Really Good Follow-Up To Their First One........2006-12-26

my favorite tracks are "gotta be a leader" "The Future".

4 out of 5 stars Excellent followup to dynamic debut!.......2006-06-18

Guy's second album The Future was an excellent followup--had just as many hits as the debut! I loved D-O-G me Out and I Wanna Get With You, as Teddy Riley's New Jack Swing sound kicks hard on those songs. Sometimes his sound got too repetitive in some cases for other artists at the time. Seemed like he did 30 to 40 songs left and right. My favorite here is Tease Me Tonight, perhaps their best ballad to rival the very popular ballad Piece of My Love, almost to a draw. It has a '70s feel to it and has such a lush landscape. It's so sexy too, even down to the erotic heartbeats pumping and heavy breathing from Aaron Hall at the song's very end. It even rivals any of R. Kelly's sexy ballads in the '90s! But the tone on the album later gets angrier, as Guy lashes as Gene Griffin for not paying them for the songwriting on their last album. On one song, Teddy raps a lengthy, yet fiery rap at Griffin. The lyrics are biting, as tough as any of the Jay-Z/Nas battle records. Even over a rollicking beat and rhythm. The other numbers are just as sharp and Aaron Hall still sounds better as a soul singer on this effort.

4 out of 5 stars Neo Soul at its best.......2007-05-08

This set delivers on the ultimate side of passion with an intimate groove for the first two weeks after recieving this disc I fould myself listening to it over and over again. What I think that moved me about this music was the suddle tenderness the laid back groove and the lyrical connection that I felt while listening. This is the music one would listen to who is totally fed up with the mainstream music format.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......2007-03-02

I heard how ?uestlove was saying that this was a classic and all that, so I finally got around to purhcasing it the other day. I don't know if there's something wrong with me or what, but this album isn't capturing me all too much like all of these other reviewers. It's nice and laid-back, but some of the songs just don't have melodies and production that catch my attention. Some of the songs are also very repetitive. Not a classic to me.I began listening to their sophomore effort, The Tortoise and the Hare, today and it is much better, in my opinion.

I live in Philly and started hearing a lot about these ladies at the onset of the Phily neo-soul revolution. I was lucky enough to see them perform @ The 5 Spot and hoped that the word of mouth along the East Coast would help push them into the mainstream spotlight. It saddens me reading these reviews to know how truly foul the record industry is and how difficult it can be for people who seek (as one previous poster coined it) "alternative r&b" to find out about new artists so that we can support them.

Luckily for me I live in Philly and there was enough local buzz about the Jazzies for me to anticipate their debut disc, which I bought the day it was released. They got a lot of play on the local college jazz station, WUHR prior to release so a lot of us got to hear 'The Wound' & 'Unconventional Ways' which are two of the standout songs on the disc and whetted the appetite for more.

The great thing about the duo, Tracey & Mercedes is that they wrote the entire album which accounts for their heartfelt singing on each song. I love how each took turns at lead vocals - Tracey with her richly soulful voice and Mercedes, with her ethereal soprano and then perfectly melded their voices together as backup. Also production by Scott Storch, one of the premiere hip hop producers & backup by The Roots is EXCELLENT. Neither detracts from the singers, just adds to the overall beauty of this project. I can only imagine that those who said that songs sound alike truly did not listen to this disc or only listened once and made snap judgements because if you truly like alternative r&b, you must give discs more than one/two listens to truly appreciate the music.

As previously stated, the outstanding tracks are: THE WOUND (a hauntingly beautiful ballad), UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS (this is the song that made me fall in love with this duo, beautiful love song like no other you will or have heard on the radio to date). Following closely behind these two are: SAIL THE SEAS, BREAKTHROUGH, RELATED TO ME & LET IT GO.

If you appreciate alternative r&b, give this duo a chance, you will not be disappointed!

I purchased this CD almost three years ago and have not regretted it since. This is a MUST have for any R&B/Neo-Soul fan. I picked it up on the recommendation of Tower Records on the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia. One of the best CD's to come along in a long while. Their second CD, The Tortoise and the Hare, is even better IMO, but this is a solid debut. Get it NOW!

4 out of 5 stars A future . . . well, the future's hard to predict,.......2007-07-13

but I do hope for another creative HIP-HOP explosion that LONS were part of from '88 to '96.

Fun and creative is what most people wrote about this. I would say they are about . . . 100% right. I, also, wondered what happened to the trio since this album was so original.

I came to watch a documentary on the group or Busta Rhymes on MTV or Vh1 about 2 years ago. If you noticed it, Q-tip said that there was eerie feeling when LONS would be rapping. ' a very competitive, or extremely competitive spirit between them.

I think it was just strife or over the top competition that drove them apart.

Besides that, the samples, beats, and rapping flows(or styles) all flowed into one unit . . . for each and every song.

' a good album. ' a classic? . . . Well, we will see in about 40 years.

later,

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THOSE CLASSICS THAT SHOULD'VE GOTTEN MORE SHINE.......2007-03-04

you know, i loved LONS. some i know say this here i wack. what i hear though is hip hop with a bit of a twist. i love especially CASE OF THE PTA, FEMININE FATT, SOBB STORY, INTERNATIONAL ZONE COASTER, SOUND OF THE ZEEKERS, and WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE. i wore this out when i had it. if you are into finding that good ole hip hop stuff, this is fo ya.

5 out of 5 stars Criminally slept-on...a fantastic classic.......2007-01-02

I can't believe that "A Future Without a Past" is as unknown and underappreciated as it is. I can count on one hand the number of rap albums that are as consistently funny and entertaining as this one. This album is simply phenomenal throughout. The three MCs here are fantastic. Busta Rhymes would of course go on to be the quick-lipped apocalyptic mainstream MC, but here he is a hilarious, immature teen. Dinco Dean carries the weight as the one who gels Busta with the equally zany and funny Charlie Brown, whose yelling and chanting make him the one who really stands out. Cut Monitor Milo makes the beats, along with an assorted group of other producers, and raps on occasion. LONS are a joy to listen to because they celebrate youth, and are quite capable of tackling issues on the youth of the world amidst their crazy humor. The production is excellent, using samples and creative instrumentals to make a unique yet simple sound that doesn't sound slightly dated fifteen years later. I can't think of another group that has so much character and charisma. "A Future Without a Past" is a concept album that follows Busta, Dinco, and Charlie through a day at school. These guys have hysterical thoughts about the goings on at the high school, and I laugh frequently whenever I listen to this. This album is a must-have for any fans of 90s classic hip hop.

The skits are part of what make the concept work so well and make the album so much fun. Beginning with "Homeroom," which has the guys skirting into school amid some sort of riot, and the classic song "Case of the PTA" plays the school theme perfectly, poking fun at the school system over a legendary production with an infectious chorus. "Too Much on My Mind" allows the MCs to voice the problems of their teenage lives, with a horn-laden hook. "What's the Pinocchio's Theory?" is crazy and hilarious, anchored by Charlie Brown. Despite its standard fun, "Just When You Thought It Was Safe..." displays a social consciousness that only the best MCs had in 1991. After a visit to the "Lunchroom" is the incredible "Sound of the Zeekers," a crazy song with multiple guest rappers. "Sobb Story" is great, and "Feminine Fatt" is a funny song where Busta speaks happily of heavyset women. I love "Transformers," and "Afterschool" the LONS ask for role models on "Show Me a Hero." "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" is infectious and fast, as is the well-produced and executed "International Zone Coaster." The self explanatory "Teachers, Don't Teach Us Nonsense" precedes Busta's hilarious "My Dingaling." The album closes with the perfect "Where Do We Go From Here?"

For as much success as Busta Rhymes would later find, in my opinion this is by far his greatest accomplishment. "A Future Without a Past" is amazing. It's unbelievably funny, musically catchy, and simply entertaining as the best hip hop is. Fans of A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and even Brand Nubian or Wu-Tang should pick this up without thinking twice, and they will see that LONS are a group as unique and enjoyable as any. This is an album that never received its due respect but is a must-have for any hip hop fan.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Brown was the man........................2006-10-31

Dam! Music I played back in 91 while in 7th grade is like old school rap classics now. I like this albume still today in 2006. Dare I say it but it's a fun album. I mean I know hip-hop now you got to be a "THUG" and all. This album just brings back good memories for me back in a time in 7th and 8th grade early 90s. The beats on this album still play to me and aren't out dated. For example, I brought Ice Cubs' 'The Predator' album just for the 'Check Yo Self' track but all the other song beats on that album are mad out dated. I don't know if your a young cat reading this or someone like me around 29, but this LP is just that good stuff! If you weren't around in 91 you might not be feeling me, but tracks for example; Feminat Fatt, Sobb Story, Show Me a Hero, were just my songs along with many more on this LP. I don't know, I just feel those good beats and the creativty on this album, still today!

    5 out of 5 stars Past, Present, & Future.......2005-08-18

The whole cd is great I remember when the group first came out
because I was around back then as a teenager and my friends and I use to hang with them before they became famous and they were just starting out. I am so proud of them because lisa was one of the first real hispanics to make it big in the cross over. Everything you here now is garbage back then music was real music
they sang about sex and everything but they did it in a way that was not nasty just well sexy.

5 out of 5 stars A great blast from the past.......2004-02-17

This CD brings back memories of a different day in Hip Hop and R&B.... the music was fun, it made you want to sing along, to dance. The lyrics were about love (Lost in Emotion), relationships (All Cried Out), life (I Wonder If I Take You Home), and succeeding (Little Jackie Wants to Be A Star).

I can remember when "I Wonder If I Take You Home" was THE song. Everyone had it blasting on their car stereos, their boom boxes on the beach in summer, singing it down the hallways in school. You could say that about a lot of songs by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Unfortunately, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam aren't making music anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane! I love this CD!.......2003-03-20

If you were a teenager in the '80's (like I was) then you will remember Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. And you will want to buy this CD! It has all the songs we Lisa Lisa fans love, like "I Wonder If I Take You Home", "Can You Feel the Beat, and even later classic cuts like "Let the Beat Hit Em'! I love this CD! It is like taking a pleasant trip down memory lane, and you don't want it to end. I highly recommend this CD!

4 out of 5 stars Step Outside Of The Box {4.5 Stars}.......2006-09-07

Some will say this is hip hop, but I think this kind of music borrows from too many genres (funk, hip hop, r&b, etc...) to fit into one box. This is what I would call a "fan album" and it may alienate the pop fans that fell in love with smash hits like "Humpty Dance", "Doowutchyalike" or "Kiss You Back". This album is a lot more stripped down and focused. There are plenty of bouncy, feel good tracks, but they're done in a more mellow, laid back way than their previous stuff. And even though this LP came out in '96, it still sounds fresh 10 years later.

As far as flaws, there are a few snoozers due the abundance of laid back cuts. The title track (Future Rhythm) is mellow and funky, but the lack of direction may have your head nodding -- as you fall asleep. The same could be said for "Hokis Pokis (A Classic Case)" and "Hella Bump". The rest of the album flows pretty well after you get past these snoozers.

Future Rhythm may be the least popular of the DU albums, but it's probably the most cohesive album in their catalogue and that makes for a real treat for their hardcore audience. If you're on the fence when it comes to DU, then you may want to pass on this and check for their earlier releases -- the funk may be too strong for you. If you're a fan this album should quickly be added to the collection. Two thumbs up.

Standout Tracks: Midnite Snack, Food Fight feat. Del The Funkee Homosapien, Oregano Flow [Gumbo Soup Mix], Glooty-Us-Mazimus (My Favorite), Want It All, Fool Get A Clue feat. The Black Spooks, We Got More feat. The Luniz, and Oregano Flow [Hot Sauce Mix], Walk Real Kool

      4 out of 5 stars Use-Her Friendly.......2005-04-03

I'm a big of Digital Underground and I just gotta say that I felt probably some of these tracks. It's a fun album, no doubt but I just didn't feel all that was coming from it.

If you're a Digital Underground fan you'll definitely like this but personally I prefer their older albums though I'll still keep looking up for their latest albums, which apparently there's already one to come out this year.

There's alot of Shock G keyboarding works here you'll notice which is pretty smooth to some or just a sleeper to others. It's got good amount of features including Del tha Funkee Homosapien in Food Fight (hard to notice though). But, nonetheless a pretty good album.

      5 out of 5 stars Best yet.......2005-02-23

DU has always been my favorite rap act. I long ago grew bored with hip-hop and soapbox posturing about hos and bling and all that.
That being said, this is a genius album from a rap connoiseur's rap group. Probably better even than Sex Packets, which is a mighty bold statement. This is your standard DU mix of social commentary and gleeful irreverance, but this one was a little better than the rest. The beats are innovative and orignal. We Got More and Hella Bump being extremely unconventional, fusing in Middle Eastern influences. There's only one track I skip on the whole CD and that's after years of listening to it. Amazing. I have no idea how this managed to stay out of the mainstream. Could be it didn't toe the line when compared to all the ultra-conformist formula rap that was out at the time. If you are a DU fan of even modest proportions you should pick this up.

      5 out of 5 stars i want it all.......2002-10-14

this is your hip hop fix....it's everything you want...real blunted.....silly, mad hip hop.....i'm not gonna get all academic in this piece, lord knows i've done that to death...but after listening to this slept on d.u. album...that would be in very poor taste..beats for days...give it a listen....I love the song want it all--a jeremiad to duality....describes how we all feel sometimes(at least me)

      5 out of 5 stars D.U.'s greatest album..........2002-05-20

"Future Rhythm" still stands as digital underground's best album (which is saying a lot--they never put out a less than incredible album), as well as one of the most slept-on hiphop albums ever.

Shock-G (a.k.a. Humpty Hump, aka MC Blowfish, aka The Piano Man, aka Peanut Hakeem Anafu Washington...etc) reigns as the most multi-talented MC in hiphop history: he raps (as himself and numerous hilarious characters), he sings, he plays slick piano as The Piano Man ("Future Rhythm" esp. highlights his piano skills), he creates beats, and he draws (check out his artwork on the covers & in the liner notes of their albums, and go to ShockG.com to view his comic strip "*holes"... very hilarious stuff). Name another MC who can do all that... quick, you have 5 seconds... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... see, you can't do it, BECAUSE NO OTHER MC CAN DO ALL THAT. Shock-Geesus reigns supreme...

In the early 90s, years before Dre was sporting Funkadelic shirts in his videos, digital underground brought P-Funk to the forefront of hiphop culture. With their brilliant usage of sampling, they reworked Parliament's "Let's Play House" into the smash hit "The Humpty Dance"... and created a new generation of funkateers. If it wasn't for digital underground, I wouldn't be the funkateer I am today...

Every hiphop enthusiast should own a copy of "Future Rhythm." Featuring slick rhymes & singing, synthesized electronic futuristic bumpin beats, a hilarious Money-B skit about Humpty's sister "Rumpty Rump," and a Del the Funky Homosapien cameo, this albums also stands as one of the greatest love-makin' albums of all time...

And if you've already got all of digital underground's mainstream releases, check out Money-B.com to get a copy of "The Lost Files"...

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but..........2004-12-13

this CD seems to be bogged down by the typical problem with most "Urban Contemporary" releases..too many producers. Hopefully her next release (which i'm still waiting on, Nona! What are you waiting on? Hopefully ME! I've got some songs for you, sis! Just wait until i get my devices :-D) will have more of a unified production style instead of making the mistake of trying to please a million & one different types of listeners...

      1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2003-12-11

Nona Gaye's tracks with Prince also were much more
promising than her solo album (without the Prince tracks) actually is. It's
a very smooth but rather boring production. One track even sounds exactly
like Lalah Hathaway's "Rise" - just with another melody. Strange.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy woman - Nice voice.......2003-12-11

Well first of all she is extremely sexy. Her voice sounds pure and young, a lot like Shanice. I would love to see her work with some more r&b flavored producers because she definitely have a great voice. The cd has a pop feel to it. I was hoping for more R&B flava. I liked the songs Supernatural & Things that we all do for love (slow jam). She could go far with the right songs. Love you Nona. Looking forward to the next one.

      4 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2003-04-23

Only a true music lover can appreciate such high, octive vocal capability. A songstress indeed. Not only in lyrics, but in heart and in soul. "I'm overjoyed" The signiture to her debut. And "The things we all do for love", a smooth, melody cathing love song, clearly signifies Nona Gaye as a musical Maven. Being the daughter of Marvin Gaye, Nona comes on strong with this album from her musical roots and gifted performing skills. Each track on this album, upbeat or slow tempo, will fulfill all singers and songwriters intent.

      3 out of 5 stars first love.......2002-08-01

I bought this cd for one song only, "The Things That We All Do For Love", because it was very sentimental for me. It was the only single I had ever heard from Nona Gaye, and was released my senior year in high school. The rest of the cd was nothing to rave about, but that song is one that will bring back memories of my first love for years to come.
