Born Under a Bad Sign dates back to a time when albums were collections of singles, and when singles, designed for radio and jukebox play, seldom ran more than three and a half minutes. That limitation meant that artists had to make an impact quickly and firmly. In blues, the tendency of songs to go on a bit had to be curbed to produce performances with punch and point. There are few better examples of this process in action than Albert King's 1960s tracks like "Crosscut Saw," "Born Under a Bad Sign," and his story of hot whispers during the hot-wash cycle, "Laundromat Blues." With his thick voice and no-nonsense guitar, King brought absolute blues credibility to the well-made commercial single, and even tracks that were recorded purely for the album, like the aching slow blues "As the Years Go Passing By," became classics. Reissued with the original funky cover art, Born Under a Bad Sign is one of the foundation stones of a blues collection. --Tony Russell

3 out of 5 stars Not his best sounding work by far........2007-04-24

This may be the album that made the man but it's not his best work. The clips above are by far the best part of the album. Less than simple blues leads, wrong notes played in several places with attempts to cover it by horns are noticible. The horn section on a couple of the songs is down right disturbing.

5 out of 5 stars The REAL trendsetter!........2007-02-12

It would appear that "King Of The Blues Guitar " contains the same tracks with additional songs thrown in. However this album was groundbreaking/trendsetting when it first was released.*I'm not seeking to use these terms flippantly as is the case with many reviewers.By the term "trendsetting" i mean to say it actually influenced thousands of guitarists including Eric Clapton who stole the lick from the intro of the title song as well as the melody for "Years Go Passing By" and used it for his intro to "Layla". The cover was striking and it's still rated as Albert's best ever release. "Personal Manager" for me is the standout track because Albert pulls out all the stops and ends up way past the 17 fret.

5 out of 5 stars Best Blues Soul.......2007-01-09

This album is not only the best of Albert King's it is also one of the best blues albums of all time. If you are into blues then there's no need for introduction, cause you already know it by now. If you are beginning to blues or just love good music you can't find a better place to start. Albert King is one the major influences in blues and guitar music. And this is his best.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired the blues we know so well .......2006-11-06

Albert King is a blues master and "Born Under a Bad Sign" is one of his most prominent achievements. On this album the band consisted of all top-notch musicians a few of which would rise to stardom. There was Steve Cropper on guitar[Blues Bros.],Booker T and Isacc Hayes(Shaft)-keyboards, Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass, Al Jackson Jr on drums , and those Memphis Horns rounding it out. Booker T. and Donald" Duck" Dunn recently did work with Neil Young and toured with CSNY on their 2000 reunion tour.

When you listen to this collection of songs you get an uncanny sense of deja vu. Like you've heard a snippet of a song somewhere before. For instance, "The Hunter" when King is singing " I've got you in the site of my love gun", immediately I recognized that line; However ,I remember it as Robert Plant bellowing it from "How Many More Times" off Led Zepplin's 1969 debut release. Or the style that Albert King had of talking in the songs. For instance "Crosscut Saw" he says "Now watch this" before breaking into a hot lead like he was going to do a trick and trying to get your attention. It made me think of Jimi when he would say "Move over rover, and let Jimi take over". And his guitar playing is profound, laying down a foundation for guitar greats like Jimi Hendrix to build their stellar style upon. It was with great insight that Bill Graham, the founder of the FILLMORE EAST and FILLMORE WEST had Albert King billed with the psychedelic San Francisco bands and white blues bands rising out of England in the late 1960's. Groups like the Yardbirds ,Cream [Eric Clapton] ,Led Zepplin [Jimmy Page], The Jeff Beck group, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Albert King is quilted throughout the blues we know today making his contribution legendary. If you love the blues I strongly recommend "Born Under a Bad Sign" as a worthy addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad song on here.......2006-10-18

A lot of Albert King's stuff has been turned into dull blues-rock cliches, but you can't blame him for that. This album is an incredibly satisfying experience. The songs are all well-written and arranged perfectly. Albert King may not have been the most versatile guitarist, but his playing always sounds good and he knew what to play and when to play it. Crosscut Saw and Personal Manager have two of the greatest guitar solos I've ever heard (I also like Albert's habit of saying things like "Watch this", "heads up", and "Woo!" during his solos). The Hunter is catchy like the flu. I Almost Lost My Mind is one of the prettiest blues songs you'll ever hear. If you like blues you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Its Definitely a Good Ready To Die Companion CD.......2006-08-31

Ok, not every song is Ill... I read the reviews and thought twice but I bang that stuff just as loud as I do Ready To Die. Its got some jems on it.

4 out of 5 stars decent (3.5 stars).......2006-08-08

lemme start off by saying DEAD WRONG IS ILL and eminem rips that track up, even better than big. other standouts include "notorious big" and "rap phenomenon" (which features the classic line 'all them rings and things you sing about bring em out / its hard to yell when the barrel's in ya mouth', which was used by jay-z on "what more can I say", and the jay version was sampled by swizz beats on last years hit "bring em out" by t.i.). the rest of the tracks range from good to bad, and none are outstanding like the first two.

buy it if you love big, otherwise just get the few best tracks from itunes.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not better than his others........2006-07-28

There's always been one thing I didn't like so much about Biggie's music, and that was the fact that it is so beat based. When I listen to some of 2Pac's material, I get caught up in the lyrics much easier. On Pac's songs his voice is standing out on the track so you notice it, while Biggie's voice is just there, while the beat dominates.

His voice fits the beats very good on this CD, just like his other Albums. This CD starts with an intro, and after that possibly my favorite track on the CD, simply called "Notorious B.I.G.". It's just the whole beat in this you just can't help loving. The CD continues the success with another great track after that, "Dead Wrong". But, sadly, after these two great tracks, this CD is only going to get worse. The next 5 tracks are also pretty good, all with rather good beats, but none that compares to the two first. Once you're about half way through the Album the songs starts getting really bad though, it seems that at this point Puffy had run out of good beats and just wanted this CD over with, but what do I know.

All around a pretty good CD, definetely worth picking up if you like Big's material, however, I would recommend getting Life After Death and Ready to Die instead, if you haven't already got those.

4 out of 5 stars aight .......2006-02-11

this album is real tight but dosen't have anything on Life After Death. in my opinion Biggie is the best rapper ever right behind Tupac, so thats why i gave this album 4 stars

3 out of 5 stars How can you not see?.......2005-12-30

Biggie is not dead. The guest rappers spot is just a fairly good ploy to hide this fact. Not like Tupac, who is consistently coming out with new material despite having died. I mean, please, people. How could Snoop Dogg NOT show up? He's a big crusader on the gangster front lines, pushing for the leader of the Crips and this as well. It's a front I tell you.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

4 out of 5 stars Standard George Rock and Roll.......2005-01-22

Okay, how the hell I'm the first to review this album is a mystery to me, but here it is. George Thorogood and The Destroyers released this record in 1988, and I bought it and still own it on vinyl. (I probably need to purchase the CD, hunh?) This was George still at really the height of his popularity - the mid 1980s -- and he was producing his own brand of standard rock and roll that was actually being played on the radio which was some kind of miracle. If I'm not mistaken, two songs had videos that were played on MTV. I specifically remember the video for "Treat Her Right."

This CD is a rocker with tons of highlights. Serious rock and roll includes "Shake Your Moneymaker," an absolute pounder, "You Talk Too Much," and "Born to Be Bad," basically the sequel to "Bad to the Bone," his signature song that everyone knows. Other really good tracks that I like are "I'm Ready," "Treat Her Right," and "I Really Like Girls," in which George proclaims his love of the fairer sex by repeating that he "really really really really really really likes girls," and then tells you what he likes about them, in case you were wondering. As usual, George reworks old blues tunes like "Smokestack Lightning," and writes his own new standards, like "I Really Like Girls" and the absolutely hilarious now classic "You Talk Too Much," which any straight man in the world who's married or who's ever had a garrulous girlfriend (and who hasn't) can relate to. This is a solid album with no low points. It's one of his best, and probably one of his most commercial, but it's still George's very basic bare bones rock and roll. By the way, if you like George at all, you have to see him live because that's where he really shines. His live shows are still as good as anybody. He's a workhorse. I've seen him several times over the years and he's still great.

4 out of 5 stars Standard George Rock & Roll.......2007-06-05

George Thorogood and The Destroyers released this record in 1988, and I bought it and still own it on vinyl. (I probably need to purchase the CD, hunh?) This was George still at really the height of his popularity - the mid 1980s -- and he was producing his own brand of standard rock and roll that was actually being played on the radio, which was some kind of miracle. If I'm not mistaken, two songs had videos that were played on MTV. I specifically remember the video for "Treat Her Right."

This CD is a rocker with tons of highlights. Serious rock and roll includes the reworked Elmore James tune "Shake Your Moneymaker" (an absolute pounder), "You Talk Too Much," and "Born to Be Bad," basically the sequel to "Bad to the Bone," his signature song that everyone knows. Other really good tracks that I like are "I'm Ready" (a Fats Domino tune), "Treat Her Right," and "I Really Like Girls," in which George proclaims his love of the fairer sex by repeating that he "really really really really really really likes girls," and then tells you what he likes about them, in case you were wondering. As usual, George reworks other old blues tunes like "Smokestack Lightning" and "Highway 49" (both Howlin' Wolf penned songs), a Chuck Berry song "You Can't Catch Me," and writes his own new standards, like "I Really Like Girls" and the absolutely hilarious now classic "You Talk Too Much," which any straight man in the world who's married or who's ever had a garrulous girlfriend (and who hasn't) can relate to.

          3 out of 5 stars A solid offering..........2007-02-06

Not the best Thorogood album out there, but it has a few really good songs, and everything is classic Thorogood. I recommend it for people who like Thorogood but want to hear something different than all the popular songs.

4 out of 5 stars Bad to the Bone ---Badder than Metal.......2007-02-01

I can't believe there's only one other review out here for a truly outstanding rocking blues album by one of the best rocking blues bands there is.

It's a shame old George doesn't get the props musically that he deserves, but I guess blues journeymen are used to that. I hope he's made lots of bucks off the royalties from those commercials his music is featured in (Sam Adams, pickup trucks).

One of the things I've noticed about GT & the D's recordings over the years is there are usually 3 or four great songs on each one. Back in the old vinyl days, that wasn't enough to assure commercial success. But nowadays, with music down loads, you can pick the tunes you want for your personalized playlist.

My favorite four on this disc are: ' Shake Your Moneymaker', 'You Talk Too Much', 'Born to Be Bad', and 'I Really Like Girls'. If you have a convertable, this is top-down-full blast-roaring-down-the-highway music. If you don't have the car, 'Born to Be Bad' also is served well with beer and barbeque at parties, or boogie-down forest preserve picnic-fests.

Hey you metal-heads. Try this on for size. Definitely designed to get you rockin'.

          5 out of 5 stars Party time! Hard-rockin' good-time music........2005-04-15

George Thorogood acquired a reputation early on as a barroom band, suited for places where people go out and dance and drink and talk loud and laugh. His critics say this is his downfall; his fans say -- that's what he does best! This disc is a real smoker, jumping right out with "Shake Your Money Maker", then before you can sit down he launches his own song, "You Talk Too Much", and then burns through T-Bone Burnett's "Highway 49." A couple songs later George assures us, in Fats Domino's words, that he's "ready, willing and able," and you know that's true. He then tells the secret motive behind just about all his songs in his composition "I Really Like Girls." I think we guessed that, and even those of us who are married can appreciate the sentiment and the energy behind it. There is no "deep" meaning here, except that feeling alive and lively is the essence of life. So crank up the volume and have a good time. It's easy with this disc playing.

            Product Description

Throughout the history of rock n' roll there has been those cratures that dwelt on the fringe, in rock n' rolls twilight zone. Deranged visionaries who took their music to the edge and sometimes ovver. The Cranps have helped us rediscover many of the crazed beings by recording and performing their songs and telling the world about about them. This album is devoted to uncovering those forgotten or ignored classics. Is also pays tribute to the spirit of goneness, so sadly lacking in today's music. And tribute to the genius of the Cramps who have the spirt and aren't afraid to show it.
