5 out of 5 stars Great band (and to clear up any misconceptions).......2005-07-03

The vapors are a great band and this is an album to get. My husband told me "Turning Japanese" was about masturbation which I was surprised to hear. So I went to the website stated below and here is the exact quote about the song:
[...]
"Over in the States, "Turning Japanese" was deciphered as a paen to masturbation - more specifically the Oriantal - looking facial distortions one pulls in the moment of climax (so I'm reliably informed). Fenton is characteristically reticent on such matters. "It means whatever you want it to mean," he says, before admitting: "I wrote it as a love song. But when I went to America everyone said to me, "Is it about wanking?" In interviews, I'd say alternatively, "Yes it is", and "No, it's not". It could be about a lot of things. I just woke up with that phrase in my head. It's just an image which captures what that song was all about. But, no it wasn't intended to be about wanking at the time. What surprised me was that the Americans thought it was an English phrase!"

5 out of 5 stars The phrase "Turning Japanese".......2005-02-23

Is well known slang for being gay, or coming to the realization that you are gay.
I thought this was well known, but apparently not judging from the other reviews. what do you think the line "I have to kiss you when there's no one else around" refers to???

4 out of 5 stars neither mastorbatory nor racist!.......2003-12-20

The song "Turning Japanese" is a love song. It's about a guy with a broken heart and has become a different person to do this girl whome he is deeply in love with. The phrase "Turning Japanese" refers to becoming something different then what you are. Things like wearing different clothes or hanging out with different people or whatever crazy things women make us do for their love. Whoever thought of the idea that it is about masterbation has too much time on their hands, and that is apparently not all that's on his hands. Furthermore, to say it's racist doesn't even hold water. The song is about turning Japanese, not killing them. My rant is over.

5 out of 5 stars Get your facts straight..........2003-10-26

For the record, out of the mouth of Dave Fenton, "Turning Japanese" is not about masterbation, it is not a British slang term for masterbation and it is not a racist statement. Most of Fenton's songs dealt with angst and separation, and "Turning Japanese" is a love song(?). Being in high school in LA during the early/mid '80s, we had a different perspective on the song. The Japanese tourists seen everywhere around Los Angeles ALWAYS had one thing with them: an expensive 35mm camera and used it at every opportunity. I can't tell you how many pictures I took for people when at Disneyland (them with Mickey, them in fron of the castle, etc.)...

We figured the song was about a guy in prison obcessing over a picture(s) and therefore becoming Japanese. Just a bad propogation of a stereotype. Sorry.

As for the Vapors and "New Clear Days," I traded a tape of Berlin's "Pleasure Victim" for a vinyl copy of NCD when I was 13 because I absolutely loved their style, sound lyrics. I to this day feel this album is a great example of the musical environment of the early '80s and the quality music that was going around. Actually, the best songs on the album are "Waiting For The Weekend," "Prisoners" and "News At Ten" with "Turning Japanese" coming in a close fourth.

Recommendation: Don't talk about things you don't have the facts on or did not experience. For more info, go to www.parengstrom.com/vapors.htm.

3 out of 5 stars Turning Japanese is NOT a Racist statement.......2003-09-03

People keep claiming that this song, for which The Vapors will forever be known, is a racist statement. "Turning Japanese" is a euphimism for masturbatory activity. Think about the lyrics... he's sitting alone, with a picture of his girlfriend. He misses her, he starts to .. uh .. i don't need to go into details, but picture your eyes while involved in such an activity... you sort of have a closed eye squinty thing going... thus "Turning Japanese"

4 out of 5 stars A decent debut, though the remastering is incorrect.......2006-09-04

For far too many people, The Vapors' career consists of nothing more than the very overrated "Turning Japanese". While it is a pleasant bit of harmless New Wave, the band had songs which were far superior.

As with many New Wave albums, 'New Clear' Days was released in the U.S. in an altered version from its UK counterpart, though it was not to its benefit. The U.S. dropped two of the albums strongest tracks, "Cold war" and "America", in favor of including a different recording of their debut single "Prisoners".

On this album, the music of The Vapors if fairly run of the mill Power Pop. They sounded like a band who were finding their sound, which they do quite well on their second album, 'Magnets'. 'New Clear Days' has some great and creative songs like "Letter from Hiro" and "Bunkers", along side forgettables like "Somehow" and "Waiting for the Weekend". They seemed to save some of their best material for the single B sides. "Sunstroke" is a great rocking number with some heavy duty drumming and a catchy hook. "Here comes the judge" is also a classic, even though it only exists in this live version.

The mastering on this CD leaves a bit to be desired. Though all of the original sources are from master tapes, it doesn't hold true to the original album, and appears mostly to be a collection of songs from previously mastered CD compilations. On the original UK album, the song "America" merges into "Trains". Here they are treated independently with the songs fading out/in, exactly as they are on the 'Turning Japanese - The Best of the Vapors' CD. Also, the single "News at ten" was remixed for its 7" release, and was also included on the U.S. LP in this form. This single version is actually included twice on this CD while the original UK album mix still remains unreleased on CD. And last, the single version of "Prisoners" is a far better version than the re-recorded version on the U.S. album. The version included here is the U.S. version, leaving the original single version still unreleased on CD.

Like with many debut albums, 'New Clear Days' shows a band trying to develop an identity. Though it could have gone in a more mainstream direction for their second album, thankfully they chose to become more creative and individual. Unfortunately, that next album would not prove very successful, and the band split soon after.

4 out of 5 stars Another band of great potential eaten by the machine.......2006-07-19

The Vapors released a great New Wave debut album in 1980 in New Clear Days. Everybody has, of course, heard Turning Japanese. It's the one song that forces The Vapors into "One-hit wonder" status, which is unfortunate.

After some variable success with several singles and the resignation of their manager, The Vapors were turned off by the "machine" and called it quits.

New Clear Days is a hidden classic of '80s new-wave. If you're a fan of that genre, do yourself a favor and pick this up. Turning Japanese is, of course, infectious. The other tunes to look out for here are "Sixty Second Interval", "Letter From Hiro", and "Bunkers".

There really aren't any throw-away songs. This album rocks from start to finish. My only regret is having taken so long to pick it up. Now I need to go find "Magnets", their second and last album.

5 out of 5 stars UK Mod/New Wave Power Pop Masterpiece!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-21

I bought this in '80, I don't get tired of it.....simply put this is THE record from the late 70's - early '80's New Wave period....w/ the bonus trax the power and beauty of the original is greatly enhanced......sweep this up NOW!!! These bands are gone!!!! The kiddie bands today don't hold a candle to The Vapors' level of playing or songwriting....melodic, poppy, catchy, heavy and beautiful...Here Comes the Judge says what the Vapors were all about.....this cd/record is in my top 5 of all time for this period along w/ the remasters of Machine Gun Etiquette by the Damned, 999's 1st, Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady, Jam Box Set (ok, I'm cheating) and Undertones A's and B's.......good luck!!

5 out of 5 stars Uraniumý235 fuel for the nuclear soul.......2004-05-21

The Vapors have demonstrated by the artistic ability to hold fast to the claim, "one of the Fathers of New Way". The Vapors and A Flock of Seagulls arguably could be deemed as the reason for the 80's onslaught of great music. In the beginning, God created the Vapors and A Flock of Seagulls who begat all others!

Bottom line, buy this CD, crank it up, air-guitar yourself into a frenzy and hold your head high!

5 out of 5 stars I'm Dumbfounded.......2003-01-30

Why isn't this band here today? I'm trying not to be nostalgic, but the pure pop melodies, the seering guitars and mature, thoughtful lyrics add up to so much more, and deserve to be so much more than a forgotten album from 1980. There is so much good music on this album besides Turning Japanese that it is difficult to understand how this band, and David Fenton particularly, could have just faded away. This is a great album; a seminal new wave record.

5 out of 5 stars A much stronger second album, which should have been a hit.......2006-09-04

It's unfortunate that The Vapors' second album didn't have greater success. It's a much better album than the average debut album, 'New Clear Days'. David Fenton, (guitarist, vocalist, songwriter), had really fine tuned his songs into attractive, melodic numbers with smart Pop sensibilities while expanding on the creativity the New Wave era seemed to bring in abundance.

"Spiders" was the first single released, and failed to chart at all. It's a very odd and wonderful song, and a very bold choice to release as a single. In it's full length album version, the song tends to go on just a little bit too long; although the single version was a slight edit and minor remix, making that version a much better listen. The single version is on the 'Turning Japanese - The Best of the Vapors' CD.
"Jimmie Jones" was the second single released from the album, and only had a brief chart life in the UK. It makes no sense to me because the first time I heard it back in 1994, (yes, I was a late comer), I instantly loved it. The band was changing their image somewhat, including headbands and other New Wave-related clothing, as seen in the video for "Jimmie Jones". At least the song had a minor bit of public acknowledgement in the UK, because the U.S. had no clue about it. Thankfully, I managed to get the video in very light rotation on VH1 Classic several years ago, and I still think it makes an occasional appearance, giving the opportunity for a new generation to discover this lost classic.
"Isolated Case" was the only song in the bands recorded output that was written by other members of the band, and it's just as good as anything else on the album.
"Civic hall" has another of those classic mid-tempo hooks that could have made for a great third single, if there was to have been one.
The last half of the album is only slightly weaker than the first half, but there's not one song I'd skip.

Two of the bonus tracks are redundant, due to a mastering error. Though the excellent B side "Galleries for guns" is a must have bonus, even including a little extra at the beginning that was not pressed into the 7" version, the single versions of "Jimmie Jones" and "Daylight Titans" are identical to what is on the original album. I have the 7" of "Jimmie Jones", and it is a noticeably different mix of the song, which unfortunately remains unreleased on CD - though truthfully the album version is the better of the two.

Another minor complaint is that the CD cover is printed extremely dark, muting many of the colors that were clear and bright on the LP sleeve.

Though the band was set to make a third album, EMI pulled the plug and that was that. 'Magnets' could have been the first in a string a truly great albums, though as with many great bands the public doesn't take too much interest and the band splits up.

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE ALL TIME RECORD.......2006-06-13

Magnets is an album that at first sounds like it is not a good follow up to New Clear Days. However, after listing to it the 2nd time (back in 1984 haha), I was stunned to find out that every single song was not just great, but incredible!!!! This was one record, that I could say had not one bad song. Song writing, great guitar sounds, incredible bass playing (and sound) and of course, Dave's unique voice and song writing make this a 10 star album!! I only wished that more people could have listened to it at my age, I tried to promote it myself on my nu-wave radio show in NY, so I know that may have helped sales(a little)....but by that time the vapors were no longer :( Favorite songs: Daylight Titans, Johnnie's in love (again), Jimmy Jones, Isolated Case, Civic Hall, Silver Machines.

5 out of 5 stars Magnetsý. small and large.......2004-05-21

OK, here is the gag. Back in 1981 when I bought my second Vapors record, Magnets, I was emotionally and physically stunned by the sheer brilliance of the band. And, 23 years later, as I am playing this album in the CD format on my $15,000+ esoteric system it once again has stunned me emotionally and physically. The kids, all 4 of them, join in when dad is raising the roof with high sound pressure levels and jamming to the Vapors! God Bless the 80's!!!

P.S. If you were to endure cruel and unusual punishment by being sentenced to only getting to listen to 1 Vapors Album for the rest of your life...I would have to pick MAGNETS.

5 out of 5 stars As good as New Clear Days.......2002-06-22

I bought The Vapors Magnets to basically complete my Vapors collection. After listening to it, its as good as the first album in my opinion. Although I can't say that the alternate tracks are much different than the album tracks. Highlights include: Jimmy Jones, Spiders, Isolated Case, Civic Hall, Daylight Titans and Silver Machines. A very under rated band that deserved better than "One hit wonders.." description.

5 out of 5 stars They stand the test of time..........2002-06-21

Well this was my favourite album about 20 years ago...
I was in a drugstore and they had this cassette in the $1.00 bin
I bought it fast as I remembered what a fantastic album "new Clear Days" was,. And I was so surprised...
Wow!
what a masterpiece!
one that nobody I knew had ever heard before.
It quickly became my favourite album.
Johnny was in LOVE again!

Well here I am again 20 years later paid $15.00 or whatever to get it back again....
Wow!
Johnny is in LOVE again!
It's my favourite album all over again.
I have no words to explain how much pleasure it has brought me to finally get this album back. I have blown away my friends (different ones and the same old ones) with this album which again none of them have heard...
The lyrics are so intense. The new wave sound never sounded better than this! they are the cars times 5!

I can't talk anymore!

This is perhaps one of the best value CDs out there, imho. Both of these albums contain one great song after another. And you get all of both albums on one CD(!) Ahh, the days of albums under 40 minutes. Not a wasted note here. Fans of current bands like Blink 182 or Green Day will like the Vapors. Neither New Wave, nor Punk (and not at all an 80s haircut band) the Vapors just made good rock music that you can sing/pogo too all night.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmeric.......2005-12-09

Hardly known except for their least-impressive 'hit' 'turning japanese,' the Vapours are a sleeper gem that transcend the time period in which the band existed. The music is full of depth, the lyrics deep and perplex; even though it came into being during the new wave generation, applying such a label would be grossly underestimating the brilliance of the Vapour's music.

If you liked 'Turning Japanese,' please be advised that that track is the lowest production quality of the lot on this magnificent collection of rhythmic and thought-provoking tunes. My only complaint is that the haunting title track "Magnets" is absent from the collection.

A must-have for anyone that considers themselves versed in the evolution of music in our modern age.

5 out of 5 stars Class has begun for todays artists.......2005-11-20

The Vapors were an incredible band for the time...They are an incredible band for this time!

It does no one justice to lable them a "new wave" band. They melded old sounds with the current technology like their counterparts the Jam. Slightly different results. But, equally absorbing.

Today we have Franz Ferdinand, the Kaiser Chiefs, the Killers, ect...Borrowed sounds from an era long lost. Personally, I grew up in the eighties. I loved the music...even the bad stuff. We all did. The Vapors should have been huge. At least on par with Echo & the Bunnymen, Depressed Mode, the Smith's, and more...

Buy this disc...or try and find them individually. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Every song a winner!.......2002-08-29

Long ago I read an article that said that the Vapors took guitar New Wave farther than it had ever gone before - and they were right. There isn't a SINGLE bad song on this entire double-album collection! Which is a testimony to the songwriting skills of David Fenton, their lead singer (who is currently a lawyer in the UK, I believe). Magnets, their second album, is less edgy than their debut (New Clear Days), but displays far more maturity and depth - it was, simply, ahead of its time (and perhaps still is).

Brilliant, real, edgy, and just really really good music. I'd hesitate to join others in comparing them to bands like the Knack or the Pretenders, because in my book the Vapors were better. They were among the very best bands the New Wave ever produced. Which was why, I suppose, they were doomed from the start. What sort of industry produces thousands of cookie-cutter albums from cretinous boy bands and bimbos like Britteny Spears and only two albums from the brilliant Vapors?

Their music reminds me a little of another band that only managed to get albums made: the Cavedogs. Not as good as the Vapors, and of a far later era, but talented and very listenable.

Try the Vapors and I think you'll find it to be a secret musical lodestone that draws you back year after year...to remember when music was sincere, real, and just plain great to hear.

Often derided as one-hit wonders (for the 1980 hard-wave anthem "Turning Japanese"), or as imitators of the mid-period Jam, the Vapors were nevertheless a fine and worthy band whose two LPs have weathered extremely well. The evidence: They've spawned more greatest-hits packages than they had albums. Anthology is the best introduction, with the entire US version of their debut, New Clear Days, and four-key tracks (including "Jimmie Jones") from Magnets. It omits the latter album's great "Daylight Titans," but you can't have everything on a single CD. For New Clear Days and some single A- and B-sides, try the Turning Japanese collection. For both of the original albums and no frills, try the Vaporized double-CD set. --Gavin McNett

Album Description

Not sure what John Aizlewood was listening to in the 1980's but the Vapors rate with ANYONE as true masters of the Post Punk/New Wave era. 1. Turning Japanese is NOT about masturbation (see sleeve to similar anthology called 'Vaporized' ) 2. of all the great albums of the 1980's (and there were 100's), this rates in my top ten. I think about this album in the same light as Regatta de Blanc by the Police or the Pretenders first album or Joe Jackson's Big World or Elvis Costello or U2's Boy, or some of Peter Gabriel's work - The Vapors were masters and remain completely undiscovered. Don't miss this if you liked music in the 1980's even slightly.

3 out of 5 stars I love "Turning Japanese" but..........2000-05-18

the quality drops off pretty fast afterwards. Some of the songs are decent. "News at 10", "Waiting for the Weekend", and "Spring Collection" show off the bands considerable pop hooksmanship, but the quirky humor that made "TJ" so memorable is pretty much absent in the rest of the Vapors' work. If you like new wave from this period compare "New Clear Days" and "Magnets" to the Cars' first two albums, and you can see why one group went on to megastardom and one to obscurity.

4 out of 5 stars The Vapors: Misunderstood & Underrated!.......2000-03-15

Even in the '80s, I didn't know a soul who appreciated this band as I did in my teen angst, new wave way. Sure, "Turning Japanese" was great fun, but the Vapors' effect was really a cumulative one. You need to hear a number of songs (preferably taking in _Magnets_ as well as _New Clear Days_) before passing judgment on these guys: Letter from Hiro, News at Ten, Trains, Sixty Second Interval, Magnets... it's purely random that Vapors aren't considered classics of the era.

As for the Jam complaints: you'll hear Jam moments here, but that's hardly anything to get pissy about. The overall tone and *style* of the Jam v. Vapors are different enough that comparing them is a bit ridiculous. Rather like asserting that you can't have fun listening to Madness because The Specials were so good. Who cares? They're both good.

5 out of 5 stars The Vapors, New Clear Days/Magnets.......2000-01-25

This is the greatest CD ever. I simply love it. Every word of every song. Too Cool.

Jam? I may be dated at 50, but I never noticed them (or much else on the pop scene during this period). In 1980, the Vapor's first album was essential, discrete, high-energy, disaffected British youth punk. I loved it then and still do. Makes me feel 16. I had been looking for this CD for years and finally found it. Thanks Amazon.com.

Turning Japanese- great song. Lots of tunes from New Clear Daze that I had on vinyl. The Vapors are the Vapors- great band, but limited exposure.
