5 out of 5 stars Eddie Kendrick's Farwell To The Temps:The End Of An Era.......2006-11-12

'The Sky's The Limit' marks an important turning point for The Temptations. It was Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams final recording with them-Kendricks leaving only because he could'nt be in a group without his ailing best friend Paul. Both of course go out (hitwise) in a triumphant moment on "Just My Imagination"-the last Temptations smash hit with Kendricks aboard. At this point both group founder Otis Williams and Kendricks had professed to prefer The Tempts mellow, melodic soul style to Norman Whitfield psychedelic experiments. Therefore 'Sky's The Limit' is dominated by lush, laid back cinematic soul in the style of the hit an "Gonna Keep Tryin' Til I Win Your Love","Man" and "Throw A Farewell Kiss" are no exception."I'm The Exception To The Rule" is in the same school and features Eddie singing in his lower voice-he still sounds great. The highlite is their own twelve minute version of "Smiling Faces Sometimes",which is much busier and psychedelic then the famous hit version by The Undisputed Truth-Eddie's falsetto is absolutely chilling and it climaxes with a cavalcade of heavily echoed wicked laughter. The last two songs are uptempo-"Ungena Za Ulimwengu (Unite The World)" can also be found on the 'Emperors Of Soul' box set but is a hard rocking psychedelic soul tune with screaming electric guitars and Dennis Edwards heavily echoed singing."Love Can Be Anything (Can't Be Nothing But Love)" is in the same ball game but the guitars are replaced by The Temps own dramatic vocal turns.'Sky's The Limit' will almost make you want to forgot contempory R&B didn't exist-these guys.......just as secularized church style as Ray Charles sometimes. But even so it was very much a sad album for the group as Kendricks was departing and Paul Williams was delving further into the alcohalism and related illnessess that would in many ways be the end of him.But even if "Sky's The Limit' is something of a goodbye in many ways, one wonders way so many partings aren't so elegant.

4 out of 5 stars Temptations Classics.......2005-09-07

As someone who owned both the Cloud Nine and Sky's the limit LP's I can say that Gonna keep on tryin'(till I win your love)was done by both Eddie and Dennis,on Cloud Nine it was Dennis with it more uptempo and Eddie's was slower on sky's the limit,on sky's the limit songs like I'm the exception to the rule, throw a farewell kiss, along with just my imagination were classic Tempts ballads,Norman Whitfield was keeping in step with the psychedelic mood of the time with the version of Smiling faces and ungenaza ulimengu(united the world) also this is also the lastlp with Paul Williams the lineup that went into the R&R hall of fame was missing one person and that's David Ruffin, the earlier songs with him to me at least are the best but if you are a longtime Temptations fan you will also want this cd for it is also a part of their best years 1964-1975.

5 out of 5 stars The Temps At Their Most Romantic.......2005-02-19

The Temps are still the ultimate R&B sound by which all standards are set. Although this set of music contains some very psychedelic music that relegates the music to a specific era (re: Unite The World), hold on... Some of the most timeless and definitely the most romantic music the Temps did is here. This album seems like it came from two totally different sessions. If "Throw a Farewell Kiss" does not grab you try "I'm The Exception To The Rule" And then there is " Gonna Keep On Tryin' Til I Win Your Love" The big hit "Just My Imagination" is not much better than the previous three mentioned. It is a shame that the entire album could not be of the same genre and the psychedelic held over for another album.

1 out of 5 stars ALL THE TEMPTATIONS CD`S THAT YOU OFFER.......2004-06-13

THE CDS THAT YOU ARE OFFERING OF THE TEMPTATIONS,90 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE ALREADY HAVE.BUT THERE IS ONE THAT I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND ON CDNOW FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW AND YOU ALL CANNOT OR DO NOT HAVE IT.THE NAME OF IT IS (THE TEMPTATIONS FEATURING RICK JAMES).THE NAME OF THE CD IS (REUNION)

5 out of 5 stars The End of an Era.......2004-06-07

The last LP by the classic Temptations who would be inducted in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. A tribute to departing lead Eddie Kendricks. Peaches 13: "Gonna Keep On Trying Til I Win Your Love" IS led by EJK on "Sky's The Limit". The Dennis Edwards led version you speak of is on "Cloud Nine". Your reference doesn't make your review "null and void" however, just makes it in need of correction ((Smiling Faces Sometimes)) ........Peace

3 out of 5 stars Average debut from Magic.......2006-07-22

Magic, one of the newer members of No Limit's huge roster, finally drops his debut album. After hearing hiim on C-Murder's albums, I liked his vocie and delivery so I checked this out, and the result was nothing more than average. Like most No Limit releases of this time, there are too many songs and guests (which in his case isn't a bad thing). He only has 4 solo's and 1 song song where someone does the hook, so of the 21 songs, guest rappers are on 16 of them (all No Limit artists as well). Of the 21 songs, I'd say 6 are good, 2-4 I skip, and the rest are average. Production is decent and mostly handled by the Beats by the Pound crew. KLC does 6 songs, O'Dell & Craig B each do 4 songs, Mark Dogg does 3, Mo B Dick, Master P, DJ Daryl, Carlos Stephens each do 1 song. I'd pass this one up unless you're a huge fan of his.

4 out of 5 stars ONE AGAIN THE GUEST RAPPERS MAKE THIS ALBUM.......2006-03-22

MAGIC IS A GOOD RAPPER, HIS VOICE IS TITE, BUT HE CAN'T CARRY THIS ALBUM BY HIMSELF. C-MURDER IS ON A FEW TRACKS, FIEND AND THE REST OF THE SOULJAS OF NO LIMIT. THE ALBUM IS GOOD..NOT GREAT..BUT GOOD. FOR THE RIGHT PRICE THIS ALBUM IS WORTH PICKING UP. ($12 - $15) AT MOST. BUT IF YOU ARE A COLECTER THEN THIS IS A NO LIMIT MUST. IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW THIS.. FIEND,MAC, AND SOULJA SLIM ARE THE ONLY MC'S THAT CAN CARRY AN ALBUM BY THEM SELVES. THOSE THREE ARE A MUST HAVE FOR SURE.

ANYWAY, THIS ALBUM IS GOOD 4/5 STARS.

4 out of 5 stars godzilla.......2003-08-23

Tracks you have to listen to:
DID WHAT I HAD 2 (feat. Mystikal, hypnotic ghetto anthem)
BALL TILL WE FALL (feat. C-Murder, great combination b/w Magic's rough voice & C's softer type of voice, both spittin' game)
MONEY DONT MAKE ME (feat. C-Murder & Soulja Slim, 3 of my favorite rappers of all time in 1 track, and this 1's really hot!)
SKYS THE LIMIT (feat. Mia X & Sons Of Funk, great ballad)
NEW GENERATION (feat. Fiend & Mac, fast crunk-style song with good lyrics)
WHEN DRAMA CAME (feat. Fiend & Snoop Dogg, tight dark thug-style track)
THIS ALBUM IS A MUST-HAVE

3 out of 5 stars Failed Ideas.......2004-12-09

Maureen McGovern is a national treasure. Her Naughty Baby CD to me is the 2nd coming of Christ. By comparison Out of this World is quite disappointing. Mostly either Harold Arlen or MM's uninspiring interpretations and/or Renzi's arrangements don't seem to suit MM on this CD. The drums and percusion are sometimes schlocky. The screechy sax is always terrible. Also not working for me are the electric keyboard/synthesizer, the electric guitar and the cello. Even Renzi's piano playing is sometimes a let down. Jay Leonhart's great bass work seems to be the only thing that you can depend on here. Did MM do this to herself or is Renzi mainly responsible? Spend your money instead on: Naughty Baby, The Music Never Ends, The Pleasure of his Company and Christmas With MM. All wonderful music.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Exquisite.......2003-12-01

I'd forgotten what a beautiful, supple vocal instrument McGovern has. Here, she sings blues- and jazz-flavored tunes, torchy ballads, and more--all Harold Arlen--including "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Over the Rainbow," "Let's Take a Walk Around the Block," "The Man That Got Away" and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Her "Optimistic Voices" (from The Wizard of Oz) is worth the price of the entire CD. It is simply exquisite, like a fine jewel, polished and gleaming with feeling.

On this record, David Daniels, one of our finest, most sought-after countertenors, adds a wide variety of styles, from Italian bel canto, popular classics, and American art- and folksongs to his signature Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. He appears to be equally at home in all of them, naturally adapting his vocalism, phrasing, diction, and delivery to each idiom, while his uniquely beautiful voice retains its pure, floating quality and intense expressiveness. His astonishing breath control lets him spin and sustain endless phrases; his middle range is dark and warm, his top bright and radiant. (Hearing those ringing E-flats, Es and Fs from a male voice never ceases to surprise.) The program seems aimed at including something for everybody, but reversing the usual route, arrives at the European 15th century by way of the American 20th, opening with John Kander's title song and songs by Alec Wilder, Harold Arlen, and Leonard Bernstein, who is represented by the frighteningly contemporary anti-war protest "So Pretty" and a song from "Mass." Three beautiful Spanish Renaissance songs and three famous English songs by Dowland and Purcell are followed by three luxuriously romantic, intimately caressing ones by Bellini; the program ends with three popular favorites, two American, one French. The only false note is struck by two overly familiar versions of "Ave Maria": Gounod's, a skillful extraction of a fine melody from Bach's C-major Prelude (sung here in D-flat), and Schubert's, a setting of Ellen's prayer from Sir Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake." Craig Ogden's otherwise excellent guitar arrangements of the original piano and lute accompaniments are less successful here; the texture is too thin to support and sustain the intensity of the music. --Edith Eisler

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Star-crossed Crossover.......2007-03-13

There are many fine ways to hear David Daniels -- the Handel arias CD for instance, or the unique and wonderful performance he delivers on the DVD of Handel's Theodora. This CD, as other reviewers have declared, is half wonderful, half awful. "Innocent" music has to be sung by innocent voices. The Berlin Philharmonic can't play mariachi, Mick Jagger can't sing Danny Boy, and David Daniels shouldn't sing Shenandoah.

3 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-29

My problem with this disc has nothing to do with David Daniel's singing; rather it has to do with the line-up of songs. Some of them simply do not suit his voice. I really don't want to hear him singing:"My Shining Hour"-"A Simple Song"-"Beautiful Dreamer" or "Shenandoah"; and I'm not really fond of hearing the "Ave Marias". Not that he didn't do justice to them;he did! But the remainder of the selections were perfect for him and I think the contrast between the 2 genre is hard to take. The great songs on the album are great indeed:the 3 songs by Bellini;the 2 songs by Dowland;2 songs by Purcell and Martini's "Plaisir d'amour". I would still buy the album for these songs alone for they are performed with skill and emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Crossing Over in Dreamy Style....David Daniels Scores Again.......2004-08-05

When I realized Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand covered the first two songs on this CD, I had to admit I was a bit worried that "A Quiet Thing" would be one of those crossover albums that famous opera singers need to do to please their management companies. But leave it to countertenor David Daniels to continue venturing into new territory for his rarefied voice type. Although Baroque-loving traditionalists may balk at his choice of repertoire this time, he paints a broad musical canvas along with guitarist Craig Ogden, encompassing American folk, English and Spanish renaissance, Italian bel canto, two versions of "Ave Maria", and even some Tin Pan Alley. This could have been an unwieldy smorgasbord for a lesser singer, but never underestimate Daniels' vocal dexterity, incredible coloratura and superb taste. Daniels and Ogden have really turned this program into a cohesive vision full of simply beautiful music wonderfully realized through voice and guitar - probably the best such coupling I have heard since Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening's "Pleasures of Their Company" more than a decade ago.

Standout tracks include Alec Wilder's melancholy "Blackberry Winter", a contemporary piece which ranks right up there with any of Daniels' much-revered Handel arias; John Dowland's "Come Again, Sweet Love", so familiar yet perfect for his voice; the one-two Americana sequence of "Beautiful Dreamer" and "Shenandoah"; and the title track by John Kander, which he sings with a languid quality that adds dimension to its original meaning. Such flights of vocal beauty make one wonder when he will tackle the Sondheim songbook. This is a terrific album, ideal for those who want an introduction to not only the countertenor voice but also the artistry of David Daniels.

    5 out of 5 stars Reveries.......2004-04-04

A QUIET THING: Songs for Voice and Guitar is a unique, idiosyncratic, irresistible collection of songs that span from contemporary melodies from Broadway to English lute songs to versions of Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod and Schubert) to American folksongs. And as if this variety of communication weren't enough, these songs are performed by countertenor par excellence David Daniels and the subtle and sensitive guitarist Craig Ogden. Both performers are intensely musical, intuitive interpreters of poetry and melody line and offer popular ballads from the stage of today with as much sincerity as bel canto songs of Bellini and the other-worldly Dowland and Purcell. For those unfamiliar with the countertenor oeuvre then this is a beautiful introduction to that vocal quality. David Daniels is internationally celebrated for his resurrecting the original countertenor roles in Handel operas and his voice has more power on the opera stage in this unfamiliar vocal range than those many regular tenors. Not being a fan of crossover recordings (big opera stars singing Broadway show tunes) I admittedly approached this album with reservation. But listening to these two men changes all that. Here in this aptly titled collection Daniels proves that his soft and quiet range is just as admirable as his 'big role arias'. The collaboration between Daniels and Ogden is clear and pitch perfect and the result is a recital - no, salon - of intimately communicated moments. An album to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Food for the Soul.......2004-03-02

Having everything from Marylin Manson and The Offspring to Rossini and Offenbach in my CD collection, I'm certainly not a die-hard classical music fan. Driving home one night (stuck in peak-hour traffic) I heard "A Simple Song" (tack 15 from this album) on the radio. It was just so simple, so peaceful and joyous. I had never heard of David Daniels, but I bought the album and have listened to it constantly. It is superb. Even if you think you don't like the counter-tenor (male alto) voice, try this album, you won't regret it.

        4 out of 5 stars 'Blackhawk's fourth album soars ( 4.5 stars ).......2003-09-07

I have no idea what happened with their awesome third album, "Love And Gravity", as radio got lazy with giving the singles 'Hole In My Heart' and 'Postmarked Birmingham' good airplay. Their fourth album, 'The Sky's The Limit' is a bit better than their third. Lots of solid material, with the trio writing some, yet not enough, as there's too many of other writers songs on here instead. 'Your Own Little Corner Of My Heart' is a song with a little thunder, a little speed, and the sweet blend of Henry Paul, Van Stephenson, and Dave Robbins vocals, which are so formidable together, there are hardly any others in the buisness that can match their voices as well as these three. My personal favourite they've recorded on this disc is 'Who Am I Now', a man without an identity after love walked out. Nice work with a homegrown mandolin collaborating with some shiny electric guitar. Amazing harmonies here. Henry Paul on 'In My Heart Of Hearts' is welcoming and earnest, and the song has a slow, nuturing feel with sincerety. 'The Last Time' is another good love song, as they play with different keys, making it the most diverse sounding. They aren't afraid to make this one more than a two or three chord tune. A surprise (and a first for them) is the steel guitar on the snappy ''When I Find It, I'll Know It.' Still up there, and more gutsy is the ganglin' 'Goin' Down Fightin'. This is a real go-getter. Robbins and Stephenson get stellar in the background as Henry Paul's unique hickory voice delivers. Again, that mandolin and electric guitar work like a charm on 'Nobody Knows What To Say'. Everybody will love 'There You Have It', and awe as Dave Robbins stuns us with his simple yet fantastic sweet love song, 'Always Have, Always Will'. Van Stephenson also takes the lead with a nice addition to the album, the self penned 'Think Again'. Gettin' grity and rockin comes 'Walkin On Water'. These boys know how to rock. Sadly, Van Stephenson passed away after their Greatest Hits followed this album, and will be missed very much. The band has continued to record/tour, with the spirit of their good friend and partner right with them.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2002-05-23

In my opinion, this is by far the best BlackHawk CD ever. I'm a huge BlackHawk fan, and after I heard "Your own little corner of my heart", I became a mega fan, you might say.

5 out of 5 stars My family and I saw you at the Showhegan State Fair in Maine.......1999-08-19

We enjoyed the show you all gave us. I have a sister that I took with me that is very slow but she loves country music more then I ever do and I thought you all would like to know that she loved you all. we tryed to get an autograft at the show but we did not ever get near you all. My sister was up set. My mother and her loved your new songs you played there I try to get the online number you gave everyone and could not fine it. There view was they love ya. I liked it a lot for country music. I listen to rock mostly be I will come to see you all again if you all come back to Maine.

        5 out of 5 stars Better-n-Better.......1999-06-04

Reviewing this CD in 1,000 words is simple, because there is only one word I would use to describe it: INCREDIBLE! Dave Robbins takes his first attempt at lead vocals and solo writing with his ballad to his wife, "Always Have, Always Will." Van returns to writing and lead vocals with "Think Again," and BlackHawk's harmonies are showcased on all 11 tracks. "The Last Time" is reminicent of Henry's early music, and "Your Own Litle Corner of My Heart" is a song that describes life in a way that we can all relate. Though self-described as more commercially-accessible than "Love and Gravity," BlackHawk is still not afraid to step out and take some chances with their music, and they will continue to have me as a lifelong fan thanks to it!

5 out of 5 stars Here's hoping more of the same is on the way!.......1999-04-02

One of the 2-3 best Cd's I have bought in the last 2 years! All songs are very good to excellent. I liked the fact that there were no remake songs. I especially liked Little Corner.. , Think Again, and When I Find it ... Blackhawk is by far my favorite group after this Cd!
