People who are a part of the world of Hip-Hop know me as Wellzphargo. I started rhyming and writing poetry after my mother first read me poetry by Paul Lawrence Dunbar, the son of American slaves. Being exposed to the dialect of African-American slaves at an early age, helped me to develop a writing style and a flow that is very different from the average Emcee. Paul Lawrence Dunbar was the first American rapper in my opinion and I am determined to honor his legacy.

After winning my first talent contest when I was in high school, I knew at that point that I had the talent necessary to achieve great success in the entertainment business. All I needed was enough resources to seize the opportunity if it ever came my way. The group that I started in high school was called Cash Flow and it consisted of me and two other rappers, Money Bagz and Big Money Grip and two break dancers, Devious Dave and Footwork. Our show was very well rehearsed and as a result we won every contest that we entered during a three year period.

When I went away to college I ended up at Florida State University, I started DJing dorm parties there and the rest is history. Being a DJ helped me to learn a good song from a bad song, based on crowd reaction. It also helped me to develop an ear for detecting a good beat from a weak one and this paid big dividends later, when I started recording songs in the studio. My first attempt at recording was definitely a learning process. I wasted so much time getting my vocals right, that it took a ten hour session to make a 2 song demo. I shopped that demo to anyone with music ties but I didn’t get any calls and eventually I gave up on my dream of being a rap star and settled on being a DJ from that point on.

Three years ago I made the decision to explore my musical gifts one more time and produced my first full length album, ‘The District of Columbia’ by myself using beats given to me for little or nothing by up and coming producers in the Virginia area. In retrospect that album was pretty good but the budget definitely was reflected in the overall quality of the music. So I went back to the drawing board and decided to take the $10,000 I made selling my first album at my DJ gigs and put that money into better beats, which in turn helped me to write better songs.

Federal Reserve was formed in 2004. Federal Reserve consists of two rappers, myself and Mafiano and a marketing genius named Gavin Morris, who I refer to as ‘Gavin The Great’ because of his ability to conquer anything. Gavin is our manager and primary promoter and he’s the glue that keeps us together during tough times. The three of us run Set For Life Records together and we share in all decisions related to the production and marketing of our music. I am very proud of how polished the Breaking The Bank album ended up sounding considering how small the budget was. I could have quit a long time ago but I come from a long line of people who find a way to persevere. So at this point in my life, I am determined to see Set For Life Records become a multi-million dollar operation. I am positive that we have the talent, brains and stamina to compete at a high level in the Independent Hip-Hop music game and I am looking forward to putting our show on the road so we can share our music with the rest of the world.
