Uniquely Australian Comedy About the Great National Sport from Bill Lawry and his Gang.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2005-01-01

A great album. Australian comedian Billy Birmingham (aka the 12th Man) does an hilarious take of Bill Lawry, Tony Greig, Richie Benaud, and the rest of Australia's Channel Nine commentary team in this special release packaged for the UK market. The two albums packaged here are called "12th Man Again/Still the 12th Man" in Australia, and the "Just Not Cricket" track from the 1980's appears on the "Wired World of Sports" compilation. So if you're an Aussie who already has those, there's no reason to get this.

But anyway, on to the album. It's Just Not Cricket was the first major release by the 12th Man, and it's bloody hilarious. Richie goes through a wrap up of the scorecard for the day's play, with Sri Lankan players such as "Shewanda Piasuriya". The 1990 release of "12th Man Again" is included, with hilarious musings from not only Richie and Tony, but Bill, Max, and Geoff in the control room. Probably one of the better releases in the 12th Man's catalogue is included here, the 1992 release "still the 12th man". It follows a day in the life of Richie, with a hijacking of the commentary box by Bill and Tony, as well as Richie being locked in with Max, taking a SWAT team to get him out of there.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2001-10-28

An absolute must for people who enjoy cricket. This has to be one of the most amusing test matches I've ever heard!Even for people who know nothing about cricket this would still appeal to them.

5 out of 5 stars Cricket is the only sport played in heaven........2000-08-02

For the large percentage of the world that knows and loves the religion that is cricket (like Scott), this CD will become a favorite. For Australians like myself, raised on hot summers watching Ritchie Benaud and the crew commentate on Australian battles, the 12th Man's work is the Gospel according to Saint Hilarious!

5 out of 5 stars It's just not cricket.......2000-06-11

For those who appreciate the subtlety and sometimes crude humour that is so popular in the UK and all over the world, this is an absolute must. Very "Alan Partridge" like in presentation, it is a spoof on real life commentary on sports and the personalities behind the scenes. It can be offensive if you are over sensitive, but if like myself you are more interested in the pure comedy instead of political correctness, put this at the top of your shopping list. It's a cracker!

5 out of 5 stars It's Just not Cricket.......2000-03-31

This has got to be the funniest CD I have ever heard. The guy is hilarious with his brilliant impressions of all the favourite commentators, including Tony Greig, Bill Lawrie, and Richie Benaud. If you like cricket, this CD is for you.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Decent Album, but far from the greatest.......2007-01-07

2006 saw so many of Australia's best all time comedians release brand new albums all around the same time. Rodney Rude let his Frog Sack hang out, Kevin Bloody Wilson said to everyone, "D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F" and Chris Franklin finally brought a DVD out, and I was skeptical about the 12th man after I'd watched his alter Ego's DVD: Austintacious and didn't laugh one during it.... the one I wasn't all that keen on hearing was the 12th man, I've heard most of them before but never actually bought one myself. I just cant stand the game of cricket, but I figured, you don't need to to enjoy the past Wired World Of Sports albums, so i thought I'd grab it as well hoping he hadn't lost the touch of the 12th man as he had with austentacious.

I didn't laugh as much as previous albums released by the 12th man, I guess thats kind of expected that it would be near impossible to top the classics. But this one didn't go down faster then an AC/DC groupie, it has it's moments.

The basic plot is that Richie Bendover and the boys have all been boned (sacked/fired) by Eddie Maguire of Channel 9 due to inflations, and they've all been replaced by the 12th man! Yeah, the guy doing these albums, if he can do all the voices, why keep on a team of commentators? But Richie and the boys don't like it and set out to get there jobs back with petitions and complaining to whoever via radio interviews and such. But you'll have to listen to find out if they get reinstated or not.

There is also a re-work of the 1991 12th man hit, Marvelous. Quite frankly I prefer the original, but the story tells us that the song inst by the 12th man, its actually by Richie and the boys (storyline, not reality) and they decide to cover it to try and get cool with the kids and rip off the 12th man at the same time like he'd done to them for 22 years.

It has it's moments, decent buy, dunno if I'll put it back on for a while, but others may not be able to get enough of P.B Warne SMSing into the commentary box... but if it had've been me, I'd have gone further with it and ripped on Warne as much as I could.

5 out of 5 stars "Richie, you don't know how to ice skate do you?".......2006-12-13

When I thought Billy Birmingham had all but retired out he comes with the best 12th Man recording yet. An action packed double disk that features the best John Howard impression I've heard yet as well as all the old favourites - Richie, Bill, Tony and even a deceased Kerry Packer playing poker with God.
The most surreal and funny moment is the lunch with Billy and Richie, with a specials menu that is worth the price of this CD alone. Anyway stop reading this and go buy it!

It is the best CD in the world with all the cricketing spoofs. It is by far the most un-politically correct object in the universe except for Monty Python. Soooo funny it had my sides splitting. Daryl Eastlake is the 12th man's best impersonation yet.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Back to the WACA.......2002-05-13

My God!!!! How funny is this CD, I heard this first in 1994 when I was still at school, and I thought, it was the funniest thing I had ever heard. Unfortunately it was only early in 2002 did I get a copy for myself, from my friend who went to Aus. The Richie Benaud, Tony Grieg and Bill Lawry impressions are great, also his Daryl Eastlake made me laugh (it is so much better if you know how these guys really sound) but still side splittingly funny even if you don't! Not for the easily offended though as the explitives flow, but that is part of what makes it so funny.

High & Mighty return with their 3rd full length LP. 12th Man is your typical High & Mighty release; average rhymes courtesy of Mr. Eon over dark, cinematic production from DJ Mighty Mi. The album suffers mostly due to a lack of variety. The reliable DJ Mighty Mi provides the tight beats that we've come to expect, but some have a "been there done that" feel to them. Depending on your perspective, it can viewed as very consistent or very redundant. 12th Man is definitely worth checking out, but don't expect these two to stray too far from their usual formula. Guest appearances include Tame One, Sean Price, and Princess Superstar.

Let me start of by saying that this cd has not left my player since I got it. They seem to be returning to there roots and have a real chance of coming back up in the came, especially with new comers like Reef the lost Cauz, Cheif Kamachi Ju Ju mob ECT put aside all the Weathermen Cage beef and appreciate this album for what it is a true hip hop classic all there albums have ben good the last one Highligt zone was tight but not as classic as this so if you like there Air force one E.P. are there first cd Home field then pick this up you will not be disapointed, tight beats sick flows and good guest spots. 3+ star album.

Dark, arty and other worldly. Last Man on Earth is a haunting, swirly, ambient affair that shares a kinship with their February 2000 debut than it does with anything this band has done.

Anyone remotely intrigued by the darker elements of feathermerchants' last two releases, "Unarmed Against the Dark", and "Street Theater", will be knocked out by "Last Man on Earth". Gone are the occasional upbeat, even danceable tunes like "Temporary", "Heartbreak Beat", and "Best Regards", in favor of songs in the heavier vein of "Ursuline" and "Farmers Night Out". (O.k., I suppose you could waltz to "Hitchcock Blonde" but it would be more than a little weird.) Songwriters Pete Veru and Shannon Kennedy have crafted unresolved short stories of longing, self-doubt, regret, anger, paranoia, and panic. Kennedy plays each part perfectly, her vocals layered over the always excellent feathermerchants rhythms and arrangements, highlighted by Jim Chapdelaine's spacy, ambient, and pervasive Robert Fripp-like guitar work, a new touch that truly sets this album apart from the group's earlier titles. This is one of those increasingly rare records that I can play without reaching for the remote control to skip a track here or there. Whether I'm trying to find some new insight into the fate of the songs' protagonists or just wanting to hear some quality, unique music that's literate *and* has a decent hook, this one's been in very heavy rotation at home, in the car, and at work. Good thing it's not vinyl, or I'd need a new copy already.
