Editorial Reviews
This debut album, basically a collection of early singles ("Eric B. Is President," "I Know You Got Soul," the title track), is the motherlode of late-'80s New York rap--assured, serious, and hugely influential. Rakim, a rapper's rapper, is the Chow Yun-Fat of hip-hop: cool as steel, absolutely calm, absolutely deadly. His verbal wit and rhythmic gift go hand-in-hand. He flows like a waterfall, playing around the beat, leaping from one ingenious phrase to another, letting the words do all the work. And Eric B.? He comes up with some straightforward but effective backing tracks (he favors James Brown grooves), scratches on a couple of block-rocking instrumentals, and makes room for the master to do his thing. --Douglas Wolk

A Pinnacle in Hip-Hop.......2007-04-03
This one's for real........2007-02-12
It's THAT "Paid in Full".......2007-01-06
The album begins with "I Ain't No Joke," a song where Rakim represents the duo and boasts of their talent as musicians, over a catchy saxophone-laced beat. The entertaining instrumental "Eric B Is on the Cut" follows, preceding the heavy and infamous "My Melody." The thumping drums and bass on this track are excellent, as are Rakim's legendary rap verses. "I Know You Got Soul" is upbeat and lyrically inventive. "Move the Crowd" is a product of excellent sampling of funky horn instrumentation and another great job by Rakim. The previously mentioned title cut is probably the most well-known instrumental on the album, having the phenomenal, oft-used bassline and fun lyrics. "As the Rhyme Goes On" follows, containing so many simple yet classic lines ("I'm the R, the A to the K-I-M / If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?"). "Chinese Arithmetic" is the most musically inventive, using an Asian instrumental along with the hard snare. The phenomenal "Eric B Is President" will forever be considered a masterpiece, and the closing instrumental "Extended Beat" is a nice touch.
"Paid in Full" is every bit the masterpiece that its legend would suggest, both musically and lyrically. It sounds like a cliche, but it is true that if it were not for "Paid in Full," hip hop would not sound quite the way it does today. I highly recommend that any fan of hip hop shell out ten bucks to own one of the most respected pieces of hip hop music ever. This is legendary for a reason, and is plain fun to listen to besides.
(Rating: 10 out of 10) So This Is What People Were Bumping Back In Eighty-Six.......2006-10-08
Hearing rappers between 1993 and today, a lot of them quote Rakim or said that he was their influence. But after watching the "I Ain't No Joke" on BET one day, I immediately went and bought this album. Rakim's rhymes were a good distance ahead of their time. Listening to the long track "My Melody" would perfectly describe how his wordplay was. And what I like about this album is everything is so basic, no gimmics or anything compared to other albums I've heard. Another one of my favorites is the well known "Paid In Full" (I'd be here all day naming the artists that bit this song) as Rakim starts off the song "Thinking of a master plan/it ain't nothing but sweat inside my hand..."(and you know the rest...).
But Rakim isn't the only person who was involved in this classic. DJ Eric B. contibutes just as much as Rakim does. His cuts are outstanding. "Eric B. Is On The Cut" as well as the creative "Chineese Arithmetic" are dope as hell. Production is 80's flavor, so thats good. It might be odd for some people to think 10 tracks makes the album kind of short, but many albums from the 80's were about the same length.
This album is a classic to name. I'm pretty sure people were playing this album like crazy back in the day. Me and this album are roughly the same age, and having discover this here I see where many artists got their style from. If you're a new hip hop head, this is another one of those albums that belongs in your starter kit. Each album that this group made together is dope (I personally like "Follow The Leader" better than this one) and recommend that you check out all of them.
Lyrics: A+

Sweet, and syrupy; just the way it should be........2006-10-12
While it's true that Paul nor Chamillionaire are profound lyricists, dropping GZA knowledge on this release, they are both damn good rappers, able to flip sweet punchlines galore. Clever metaphores abound throughout this album, while Chamillionaire sings the hooks in each song. I know Cham gets some flack for singing the hooks in his songs, and has even be labeled "50 Cent Jr." by some people because of it, but for the Chamillionaire detractors, face it; Chamillionaire has a slick voice, and is one of the few rappers who SHOULD handle his own hooks(the only other I can think of is Cee-Lo, and, well, he's made a career out of crooning now).
The Swishahouse crew handle production duties, and as one would expect, that's a good thing. It's hard to get an album sounding this authentic to the Houston sound Screw crafted over a decade ago, but 4 years ago, Swishahouse brought it; and they're still bringing the tight production today. These aren't songs to 'get crunk' to; these are songs to chill to. This is an ideal album to listen to whether you're taking a late night drive, or simply chilling out in your home with your headphones on. Calm, cool, and downright dope, the production on this album matches the charismatic duo perfectly.
If you're a fan of the H-Town sound, then this is perfect for you. Even if you're not, it's still incredibly difficult not to love this release. If you can find it, pick it up. Highly recommended.
Still N Luv Wit My $$$.......2006-02-12
This probably isn't the album 4 you if you're looking for a Nas' "Illmatic," Jay-Z "Reasonable Doubt" or Wu-Tang "36 Chambers" type of album -- lyrical masterpieces.
That's not to hate on Paul and Cham b/c they got somethin' 2 say.
This is definitely an album you can ride 2 ... N Luv With My Money is still one of my favorites.
It's really too bad Paul and Cham fell out after this album though I'm not sure I'd even want them to try to top this LP if they got right again.
Fun, fun, fun hip hop album. Recommended for those who like to chill, have a good time and ride to some highly entertaining hiphop music.

FIRE!!!!!.......2005-11-04
So, needless to say, I HIGHLY recommend this CD. First off, the vocals are beautiful - she has such a pretty tone which is a notch above most that you hear today, she is truly GIFTED vocally and I always appreciate being able to hear some pipes on an album. Also, the songs are real, talking about some of the things people are REALLY going through, ya heard? And the message is Christ - take a listen to No 2, 3 (I LOVE this one - creative), and the last ones ("He can fix it" - powerful!).
Now, the only complaint I have is some of the skits were a little predictable, if you don't like skits on CDs those might annoy you. But please, that does not by any means take away from the blessing that is wrapped up in these songs! Every single one of them is like, a hand-wrapped gift from God to so many in the hip-hop generation, showing how it's supposed to be DONE!
The hottest new female artist yet............2005-11-01
or how to difuse a bad situation or how to respect your self as a lady. Shei is doing pure ministry in its rawest form. Then she summs it all up after the last song with an invitation to accept Jesus. Mannn. That's Hot...... SHei keep doin' your thing girl, you are setting a new standard. Even if you just love good R&B this CD is a must have....
Not your average Christian album, but it's a must-buy!.......2005-10-28
By relationships I mean situations where your friends encourage you to reconcile their marriage("Call Me,") , leaving that other man or woman to go back to your spouse("I'm Going Home"), dropping that man that's clearly not trying to be about you("Sudden Change"), resisting to temptation to smack that woman who's going around town talking about your man("Lose My Cool"), and my favorite, not trusting the gossip when people say they saw your man/woman with someone else("Try Again Part 3").
She also gives shout-outs to all children who have big dreams("One Day") and the men who are working hard to support and love their women and families("Ladies to the Fellas"), which as a man I really appreciate. She tells the story about how God spared her life on "I Got Shot." But don't worry, she does have songs dedicated to Jesus. There's the upbeat "No One," and the slow tracks "He Can Fix It" and "He's There."
This CD is also different because it layed out like a talk show, hence the title. Think of a cleaner version of Jerry Springer done as a musical. For example, "Lose My Cool" starts off with some girl coming on stage who shamelessly talks about someone's man and taunts her, saying "Yeah I talked about your man, and what?!? What you gonna do about it?" and then it cuts to "Lose My Cool." So it's really a creative album, and the skits are too funny!
Overall it's a very well produced album, the tracks are hot, the skits are too funny, and there's definitely a godly message about relationships. But even if you're not into Christian music, this is a high quality CD that anyone can enjoy.

If you are new to slowed music and want to hear what it is about without searching out the true underground, than this is a great start. The mixes are slow and sloppy - just like they used to be. Don't expect great quality - and be aware that sometimes the records will even skip. These are raw mixes - and most people who consider themselves Screw Heads would have it no other way.
Worth it for 'Braids and Fades' alone!

Can you stop the roc????????.......2005-05-20
The R.O.C: I am a HUGH fan of the roc kanye west, memphis bleek (even though his album M.A.D.E was a weak attempted ive heard 543 is ment to be a great comeback), beanie sigel, young gunz and of course jay-z. poeple like to critisise the roc but i wouldnt be to sure, the roc is slowly taking over (even though of reports its a "death of a dynasty"). The roc have so much potential with knock out artists that havent relised an album yet! (rell & n.o.r.e-ed). The main reason i think this album is so brilliant is Kanye West. He is slowly takeing over the rap game (G.O.O.D music signing Common is a fantastic idea, i hear BE is a hip/hop classic) and he will continue to shine with his new album "Late Registration". The R.O.C is faultless though with "mistake" artists like: Peddi Peddi A.K.A Peddi Crakk, Foxy Brown (a newlly signed person to the R.O.C), State Propety's awful attempts to be gangstar, Jewelz Santanas and of cource DJ Clue who goes for quantity over quality! Anyway now to the album:
Why not 5 Stars??? because of the following reasons:
1. That alful track with Master P (He uses the term "Master" loosly and who "No Limit" records made Snoop Dogg look desperate for a record deal!)
2. The awful comentry by DJ Clue or whoever it is! Why does he wreck classic Hip/Hop (Paid In Full-Eric.B and Ramkin)!!!!!!
Another reason wrong with the R.O.C (as much as i love them!) is sometimes they try a little to hard even though Hova's at a point were he can do just about anything at the moment. Songs like Champions which is a great song streachs the limits a little bit (BUT GREAT PRODUCTION BY KANYE WEST!).
In conclusion i would pick this album up if your a fan of the R.O.C (i will hope to get this album if i get the money and theres not to many more things i wan Law and Order SVU anyone???). Hope you enjoy the review and take into acount what i have said and STOP HATTING THE R.O.C!

Hip-hop has always been a puzzle, and the two-CD "platinum edition" of 1987's classic Paid in Full reestablishes one of the genre's key pieces in proper context by combining the original 10-song tour de force with a companion collection of important remixes. From Eric B.'s Technics terrorism and sampling symphonies to Rakim's soulful, street-smart flow, Paid in Full is landmark science, a Ph.D. effort building on the early theories of New York City legends like the Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash. By featuring 10 remixes--including Coldcut's "Seven Minutes of Madness" treatment of the title track and the Wild Bunch's "Move the Crowd"--The Platinum Edition also highlights the duo's influence on DJ and club culture beyond the B-boy set. --Mark WoodliefCustomer Reviews:

The greatest lyricist of all time? You make the call.......2005-06-03
It's almost impossible to describe how brilliant Rakim rhymes. I'm better off just quoting some of his flows (although that doesn't do much justice for him either, but I'll try). Here's some from "I Ain't No Joke" - "Write a rhyme in graffiti in / Every show you see me in / Deep concentration cuz I'm no comedian". Here's another, "But whatever you do, don't miss one / There'll be another rough rhyme after this one / Before you know it, you're following and fiending / Waiting for the punch-line, to get the meaning". Here's one from my favorite track, "My Melody" - "The rhyme is rugged, at the same time sharp / I can swing off anything, even a string of a harp". Here's one from their most well known "Paid In Full" - "Thinkin' of a master plan / Cuz it ain't nothin' but sweat inside my hand / So I dig into my pocket, all my money is spent / So I dig deeper but still comin' up with lint / So I start my mission, leave my residence / Thinkin', how could I get some dead presidents?". Here's one from "I Know You Got Soul" - "I start to think, and then I sink / Into the paper like I was ink / When I'm writing, I'm trapped in between the lines / I escape when I finish the rhyme". OK, one more from "Eric B. Is President" - "I came in the door, I said it before / I never let the mic magnetize me no more / But it's biting me, fighting me, inviting me to rhyme / I can't hold it back, I'm looking for the line / Taking off my coat, clearing my throat / My rhyme will be kickin' it until I hit my very last note". I can go on and on and on quoting my favorite lyrics and rhymes from Rakim, but I think I would hit the maximum word usage.
I'm not sure how much more I can tell you. Besides the fact that this is probably my favorite old-school rap album (and by far my favorite from 1987). I just wish I would've discovered it before last year. If you end up buying it, you will think the same. I personally guarantee it.

EIHT DOES IT AGAIN GEEASH.......2006-11-14
What the game is missing... street-oriented gangsta rap from the Compton legend!.......2006-10-11
Dear West Coast fans, MC Eiht showed us once again that you can get better with age. With over 15 albums under his belt (and counting), MC Eiht (who is 39 years old by the way) shows us that you don't have to get wack or soft with age (unlike so many rappers these days... don't make me mention names, there's not enough space for that), and you can still release great albums.
Eiht just gives his fans what they want and what they love about him... He doesn't wear any diamond chains, does not drive expensive cars. Like Eiht said on the interview "[Brothers] ain't feeling this [stuff]". This album is for those who want to hear music from the streets and about the streets. MC Eiht ain't goin' nowhere. Geah! The album is named "Affiliated" and everyone knows that Eiht is a Crip, but unlike many of those fake-wanna-be rappers (you know who they are) he doesn't rap about it too much or shout "crip" all over the album. I think that by "Affiliated" Eiht meant he is affiliated to the streets, and to the ghetto... You gotta admire that from an artist who has sold millions of albums worldwide...
4.5 stars for "Affiliated".

MC Eiht Is Authentic Compton...Geah!!!!.......2006-04-05
Among the album's authentic Compton born and bred tracks is the radio single, "CPT'z Bac (159 Remix Featuring CMW," produced by Raw Steel. Throughout "Affiliated," MC Eiht comes back strapped with his trademark style on new songs like "Where U Frum (Featuring Gangsta Luv of the Road Dawgs)." "Just Lean" is a laid back track by Chill and DJ Subflo, a drum and bass producer, who is also a well-known rave DJ. "Gangsta Minded (Featuring Jaz and Chill)" introduces Jaz, a female rapper.
This is authentic Compton. Keepin' it gangsta since 1988, MC Eiht has been releasing genuine issue Compton tracks. Accordingly, he has solidly earned the respect of his fans and peers in the industry. With his solo recordings, his work with Comptons Most Wanted and his stealthy collaborations, this highly prolific artist has now released 19 albums, and this number does not even include the greatest hits, compilation albums or feature film soundtrack albums that have also resulted. "Affiliated" stays true to his serious alliance with the streets of Compton, and beyond.
On the date of this album's release, Allhiphop.com dubbed MC Eiht as "an unstoppable gangsta," and listening to this album explains why.
MC Eiht's music is the soundtrack of the streets, and of the Hub City, Compton, California---a feat that is envied by many other artists, despite their heavy padding from corporate bankrolling that has helped spawn a growing number of fake, wanna-be imitators.
"Affiliated" is true blue. MC Eiht is real Compton.
