Does Anybody Like Real Music? Sweet Music? Soul Music? (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars).......2007-03-31

It took me a while, but I finally got a hold of this album. If you didn't already know, this is their '93 demo "Organix". If you've heard most of their albums, then chances are you will like this. In fact, a lot of this sounds like their second album Do You Want More?!!!??! sound wise. A lot of the tracks have heavy bass lines and swinging keyboard sounds, that at some points you think they were performing live (or atleast thats how I saw it). I guess since the fact that the origonal cut of "Essawhamah?" was recorded live at the Soul Shack, it does justify the live sounding vibe on this album.

Some more tracks that stood out were "Good Music" because of the production played so well as well as the hook that Black Thought says (the title to my review is the beginning of the hook). Both versions of "Pass The Popcorn" are excellent although I perfer the revisited version over the origonal in my opinion. And then we have "The Session", a track that clocks in almost thirteen minutes and has everybody spitting a rhyme, even ?uestlove (infact he rhymes a lot on this album). The production on that song sounds like it could be used in a movie, or such. There is a few spoken word poems on here as well, so many will enjoy those as well.

This demo is great from The Roots. It showcases what they were before they blew up, and became popular, as well as give a great introduction to their later albums ("Illadelph Halflife" remains my favorite album). Any fan of this band should have this album. It's really not that hard to find. This is one of those albums you shouldn't pay no more than 25 dollars for. But the album itself will make an excellent addition to your hip hop collection.

I was only 2 when this came out and i am 15 now but hear me out as im not into all this gun toting crap that's out these days, well basically it was only last year that i actually even heard of the roots, i know it's crazy, actually only because of the fort minor album on which black though featured with the brackets following his name.. Ft. Black Thought (Of The Roots) and i was feeling him in that song so i thought i'd check the roots out. This was around the time game theory was droppin' last year, I know, I know, it's crazy. But anyway i've finally obtained their ENTIRE discography and are now my favourite band ever!! I recently purchased the original 93' Remedy Recordings release of the album of a seller, shipped it over to the UK and tore the protective wrapping off the CD to rip onto my iTunes and i was simply blown away, no other way of explaining it, all tracks are very impressive and this is one of my more listened to roots albums, all tracks are listenable and shows how much potential these guys had then, they haven't exactly blown the charts off the scales and im shocked by that as they are absolutely brilliant!! With Scott Storch on the keys of course the organ chords will be put together expertly even if he was an amateur these days, he couldn't of gone wrong though considering he is one of the most sought after Hip - Hop producers now. Anyway here's my track by track review

1. The Roots Is Comin' 5 / 5 *
This is my favourite and it's only the first track, i was truly amazed! The song opens with a catchy baseline that soon sticks in your head after about 5 seconds then into a drum roll until the first time black thought's voice was heard on a recorded record and it is simply brilliant. This is definately a highlight on this album

2. Pass The Popcorn 4.5 / 5
Another brilliant track and in my opinion another highlight of this album. I love the this track from end to finish, truly brilliant.

3. Anti - Circle 4 / 5
Another brilliant track, there really isn't much that dissapoints on this album but this is another brilliant song, another very catchy baseline and in one part sounds like the same that was used on Commons Be Album off the track of the same name, Be (intro). Also the tune to inspector gadget is used sometime around the 2 minute mark, it might sound strange but it actually fits in well

This is what's called a skit these days....

5. Good Music (Prelude)
Decent, but not scoring it as it's a prelude to the next track.

6. Good Music 4 / 5
This track should of been renamed to brilliant music, another inspirational song off this album and people will probably of heard this off Homegrown! Beginner's Guide To Understanding The Roots Vol One and will probably know what a great track this is.

7. Grits 3.5 / 5
Another good song, the thing i love about this album as there is no such thing as a 'filler' on here as certain songs considered not as good as others like this one show you. Another song worth a listen.

8. Leonard I - V 3.5 / 5
Feeling the tune on here, it's very good, but so is Black Thought. Another song proving that a full album can be truly brilliant without mediocre tracks, but this is 93' i wouldn't really know ;-)

9. I'm Out Deah 4 / 5
Intersting track name. Start's off fairly simple, sound's very "Do You Want More" which is brilliant, another enjoyable moment.

10. Essawhamah? (Live at the Soulshack) 4.5 / 5
Of course the same song off the "Do You Want More" of course the Do You Want More album version being names Essaywhuman?!!!??! Slightly diffrent. If you purchased the recent J. Period mixtape, Best Of The Roots, it is the exact version taken off this Organix album, Performed brilliantly, Black Thought is fantastic on the mic.

11. There's A Riot Going On (Unrated)
ZzZzZzZzZz That's basically the lyrics for this track, quite strange

12. Popcorn Revisited 4.5 / 5
Another very catchy baseline included here, i love pass the popcorn and they revisited so it's got the thumbs up without even me pressing the play button yet, but otherwise i listened to it and of course i was very impressed agains as another brilliant track was soulfully flowing into my ears. This is racking up the plays on my iTunes

13. Peace (Unrated)
Yeah, I give this one the two fingers, well if you class fingers as thumbs, but who does???? Ok..... Sort of off topic there, just basically another skit on the album. I Like the background music though.

14. Common Dust 5 / 5 *
After hearing the first 10 seconds of this song without even hearing a word spoke i knew i was goin to like this one. This is sort of on par with " The Roots Is Comin' " In my opinion but just gets tipped to the finishing post, i love the beat to this.

15. The Session (Longest Posse Cut In History) 4 / 5
The length of this song reminded me of the sugarhill gang. If you have the longevity to listen through this song you will find you are listening to a gem of a song. It takes a good minute to get into the song but all is forgotten as soon as you hear Black Thought spittin his magic as usual, obviously Black Thought couldn't hold a song for over 12 minutes on his own as Dice Raw, Malik B etc. Help out, and looking at the credits for this, a HELLUVA lot of people contributed towards this great song. Definately worth the 12:44 minutes of your life.

16. Syreeta's Having My Baby (Unrated)
Not too sure what the track is called this for as there is actually no speech. On to the final track of the album

17. Carryin' On
A dissapointing end to a truly fantastic album which in my world is easily up there in the top ten hip - hop albums of all time without a doubt, but the dissapointment isn't in the track, it's the fact the album is ending, it sound's rather fairgroundy to my ears and of course is another skit type track.

A truly brilliant album from The Legendary Roots Crew

I've had this album in my possession for well over 3 years now and for some reason I was reluctant to give it a thorough listen. This past weekend I said fugg it I'll give it a shot and listen to it with no skips. Boy was I glad I decided to do that. From "Pass the Popcorn" to "The Session" I felt like I'd been warped back to the early/mid 90's nodding my head inside my black hoodie. This album is near flawless, from the funky bass grooves, to the infectious drums knocks from ?uestlove I immediately fell in love with this album. Fans of Jazz and mellowed out hip-hop should definitely cop this.

WHERE IN THE LLL WAS I????.......2005-12-18

I remember becoming aware of exactly who the Roots were (like the majority of their fans not raised in Philly, I suspect) thru the video "What They Do" from "Iladelph Halflife", which featured Raphael Saadiq...Huge fan of Tony, Toni, Tone; thought this was a new group, dug the video, end of story...Fast forward to 1999 and "Things Fall Apart"...By this time, I'm totally digging Erykah Badu and am totally impressed with the production of "Baduism", thanks in large part to the Roots(I read all credits on everything I buy)...Decided to buy "TFA" and bought "Illadelph Halflife" at the same time...Upon listening to both, I immediately made it my mission to get my hands on any and everything they'd ever done...Imagine my surprise when I finally get my hands on "Organix" (in 2000), seven years after its release, to find it's their best project and in my opinion, is still better than 90% of what has been released since then...Mind you, I don't claim to be a hip-hop head, but in the beginning, pre-NWA, I bought more than my fair share of rap and hip-hop(y'all know the difference, right?), both what was popular enough to get airplay and what was decidedly "undergound", so I can only deduce that I was in a COMA in my early twenties(as the DJs and know-nothing radio programmers in my hometown must've also been) because I cannot believe that as good as this joint is, it took me and the industry at large at least five or six years to catch up (wake up is more like it) and give these brothas their due...Granted by the early nineties, I was a full grown woman(as grown as 22, 23 can be) and was no longer loving hip-hop and it's depiction of women, but there were a few groups that didn't sell out to the whole misogynistic, gansta gansta thing that was (and is) selling large, but I digress...The difference (imo) between this and what was popular back in "93 is that Black Thought is clearly a poet, a lyricist, if you will, and not just a rapper...For example, MosDef--poet; JaRule--rapper; Common--poet, 50 Cent--rapper; Talib Kweli--poet; you get the idea...And the band on a whole is ridiculous...Don't believe me, check out Jay-Z "Unplugged"; the Roots is the band that backed him up on that set...Anyway, you don't have to be a hip-hop head to appreciate the art of this work...I like to think that "Organix" is a perfect example of what can happen when a group as talented as this is left to their own devices to do what they do, and execs stay the LLL out of the way and allow them to lead and not follow for the sake of record sales...And I'm glad to report that I have since come back to the fold and am loving hip-hop (not just rap) again...

Organix is, in my opinion, one of the best Hip-Hop records ever made. but be warned: if you're into the rap thats played on mtv and other "music" channels, then this is not for you. Organix is some of the most raw Hip-Hop ive heard, and also some of the best from The Roots (although I am a HUGE fan of The Roots, i can admit they get slightly "softer " with each album). basically, if you're a Roots fan, or a fan of true, old school Hip-Hop, then Organix is a must have. if none of the above, STAY AWAY, because u would probably be bored to death

Cause it is a good album no doubt, but not as good as the onez to come. Like The Roots say themselves, Organix was the base and they just built on that. Now if your are strictly a fan of the that early 90s type of bohemian-afrocentric-hiphop then this is definitely the album for U! But if your a fan of The Roots later works then you may like this, but i doubt not the same way u liked the latter onez. U may find this one even a little sophmoric. But throought u can tell that these guys are just havin' fun in the studio doin' their thing!

Stand outs: "Essaywhuman", "Leonards I - V","Im Out Deah", "Grits", the long 12 minute posse cut "The Session", and "Common Dust"

I've listened to all the roots albums and I'm sure most people are only familiar with their latest. Well as is the case with most groups their previous releases are much better. Organix is just the roots of the roots so if you like any of their music definately check this album out, you won't be disspointed. Did I mention there is a 12 min posse cut!
