When DJ Danger Mouse (DM) blew up with his Jay-Z-meets-the-Beatles underground project, The Grey Album, the furor around DM's illegal mix all but overshadowed the release of this full-length album with rapper Jemini. On Ghetto Pop Life you won't find the Fab Four rubbing sonic shoulders with Hova, but you will find DM's excellent production skills at play behind the adroitly flippant Jemini. The creative producer is willing to draw from everything from old '50s pop tunes to smoky funk, underscored by his intricate drum programming. Jem's presence is immediately felt--his distinct voice, acrobatic verbal skills, and quick wit make for a memorable combination. The album is mostly filled with playful bravado on songs like "Omega Supreme" and "Take Care of Business" (the latter featuring irreverent rapper J-Zone). Even a song like "Don't Do Drugs" flips on the standard public service announcement and manages to dish out sage advice with a lolling tongue. --Oliver Wang

5 out of 5 stars This Is What's Up!!!.......2007-06-10

To all the heads out there that say "hip hop is dead" .... kick rocks! This is some hott sh****t that plays seemlessly from beginning to end. The beats are tight ala Danger Mouse and the rhymes by Jemini & guests make all that top 40 bull**** just that. Witty and political, retro and futuristic, light and dark, who could ask for more? Cop it today.

5 out of 5 stars If you have not heard this album you are missing out.......2007-05-18

I know that Danger Mouse is a house hold name now that he ripped and re-did the Beetles, but Ghetto Pop Life was his first commercial album that nobody knew about but one of my friends in 2002 through digging, and it was done with a great Brooklyn MC named Jemini (who is still virtually unknown) but this album embodies hip hop - not rap as its know today, BETTER, and if you have any interest in Hip Hop or just good music then cop this album!!! I only knew the name of the album starting about 2 years ago after wondering why some of the best albums of our time are never known....it was only known after Danger got popular.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Underrated.......2007-01-15

I stumbled across this album while searching for Danger Mouse stuff (was a big fan after The Grey Album and St. Elsewhere). But this might be his best work yet. Jemini's flow is simply intoxicating, and he carries a confidence that feels far from bragadocious, even though in truth it is. DM's production here is jaw-dropping in its creativity and in its listenability (something that I felt wasn't the case on Danger Doom). Easily one of my favorite discs in recent memory and a definite must-have.

4 out of 5 stars DOPE CREATIVE MUSIC!!.......2006-06-30

I love this album for its beats. The MC wasnt my bag, but the music was definitely something I can play over and over. I want an instrumental of this stuff!! The MC holds the album back from getting a 5 star rating from me. I can't find any faults other than that. But that is just my taste preference. Just listen to the audio samples and judge for yourself!!

4 out of 5 stars BEATS! But thats it........2006-06-11

The production on this album is amazing, and you should get it just for that. But the rhymes are weak compared to the beats Danger Mouse put together. Jemini isn't bad, but he isn't good enough to match Danger Mouses genious beats. But it's still good.

1 out of 5 stars bathroom locks.......2005-03-02

sad to say, I was misled by all the 5 star reviews and bought this cd. I was expecting something extraordinary. this is not it. i am a true reggae believer and my ears are always wide open for something new. this aint it. its soft and boring. hate being negative about postivie music, but this album just doesn't add up.

4 out of 5 stars a good album from jah cure.......2004-04-24

i like this album. it is different in the sense of jah cure being so young yet very talented. he is a rougher version of gregory issac. beres hammond's production touch on the album is nocticeable and welcome. some heavy rasta messages are here. j.cure also sings of love, inlight of the situation he currently faces. i definitely like: zion await, every song i sing, western region(brothers, stop killing each other!!!)., and vibes man a build.

5 out of 5 stars ...WAKE UP!!! FREE JAH CURE!!!.......2003-06-20

when i first heard , "Free Jah's Cure" i was totally blown away.
a modern rasta album in which every song is a real gem.
his voice reflects inspirations from Yami Bolo and Beres Hammond.
when i heard his latest release, "Ghetto Life," the first thing i noticed was the production...Lord have Mercy! the bass is so deep and the kick drum hits so freakin' hard!!! the song selection for this album is slightly different in style compared to the first one. i was already familiar with the track that includes Sizzla, but when i heard "Western Region," i thought
he might have run out of ideas due to the fact that i heard a reworking of a previous melody. after listening a few times, all the tracks really started to grow on me. i enjoy this one almost as much as his debut album...
his music is so beautiful, i have a hard time believing he is guilty.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2003-04-01

Jah Cure has done in again! This is indeed a great work of reggae vibe. You can tell that he had some assistance from two of the baddest reggae artist around (Sizzla and Beres Hammond) to make this album. This one is just as good as the first. Go get it!

5 out of 5 stars WHAT CAN I SAY?.......2003-03-15

I've always likened Jah Cure to a singing version of reggae great Sizzla Kalonji. They both just seem to be on the same level of consciousness lyrically and the way they seem to be easily able to get their message across. Speaking of Sizzla, I find it very interesting that the first voice that you hear on this album is that of Sizzla, on the opener and possible best track Every Song I Sing, very very good on the lyrics. If Every Song i Sing is not the best tune here then certainly Hail to My King is, that is a song that everyone, every religion from Rastafarian to Atheists can appreciate, really powerful. All 15 tracks, not a bad tune amongst them, also really love the combinations one with the aforementioned high priest Sizzla Kalonji on the older King of the Jungle, if you've never heard it, then you'll probably love it, and if you have heard then you'll relish in having it on cd (that is if you neglected to get Sizzla's Greatest Hits Album last year), with Jah Cure providing the amazing vocals and Sizzla stepping in with the very meaningful verses. Also really lie Zion Way, Zion Await, How Can and Trust Me and also Vibes Man a Build, and Hanging Slowly, and i could go on, every track is nearly perfect in its sound and of course, its lyrical point.
Jah Cure is an album artist, only having 2 albums so far i know that may sound weird, but i have never had the experience of seeing him perform, i can only imagine, but his voice is soooooooo powerful on this album and his first that I am convinced that he can do what he has done so far in his career which is releasing albums every 2-3 years, and that works. His first album was critically acclaimed as this one is destined to be, he sounds excellent on album, and his writing prowess ranks right up there with lyric king Sizzla, he is truly on that level. As he is currently serving a long term prison sentence, a young singer might be wise to hire him as a songwriter because i assure you it gets no better than this in lyrics. AMAZING! GO GET IT

Album Description

You might still hear Yiddish songs today, in concert or at social gatherings of Yiddish speakers. But their natural venue was the village or shtetl of Eastern Europe or America where you could hear them through open windows in courtyards, or from busy people humming their way from place to place. They were born and flourished in a world that is no more. They represent the joys and sorrows, dreams and aspirations of ordinary folk, the Jewish mother's dreams for her child, the poverty of the rebbe, the Jewish teacher, the freshness of young love and revolution, the joy of Jewish holidays which provided a welcome respite from the drudgery and hardships of daily life for Eastern European Jewery. Yiddish song reflects the richness of Jewish folklore, as old, vast and varied as the numerous regions which the thousand-year-old language and culture inhabited. It reached its greatest artistic expression in the latter half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. There are songs of work, love and lullabies; songs about great Jewish heroes and parodies about the same, songs about Hassidic rabbis, pogroms, the Messiah, the longing for redemption and the return to Zion, and of revolution. Political parodies abounded in the 20th century as did Yiddish theater songs in various genres: operetta, art song and Vaudeville. There were writers, poets and musicians throughout the ages who created this treasure trove, much of it still waiting to be culled. The Yiddish street singer was a common sight in the cities and towns of Eastern Europe, well into the 20th century. The broder zinger from Galicia heralded in an age of Yiddish folksong creativity that reached every continent on which Jews lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. The poet Itzik Manger and, of course, Mordechai Gibertig, the most famous and popular of the Yiddish folk-poets, were heirs of that tradition. Gibertig "S'Brent," a vision of burning cities and a call to arms, written in 1938, proved to be all too prophetic. During World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews were confined in ghettos across German occupied Eastern Europe. In the ghettos and even concentration camps, members of the terrorized Jewish population engaged in remarkable, organized acts of defiance. Determined to leave a record of their history for posterity, they secretly created archives, diaries, drawings, photographs and songs to document Nazi crimes against their communities. During the same period many European Jews defied their Nazi oppressors by actively taking part in an underground war of resistance. This partisan warfare, carried out by clandestine, irregular forces operating inside enemy territory, was particularly widespread in the dense forests and nearly impassable marshlands of Eastern Europe. In 1942, the Supreme Partisan Headquarters in the Soviet Union extended its authority over the majority of partisan units in Eastern Europe and young Jewish fighters who escaped the ghettos joined the Russian partisans. Jewish partisan units were established in 1943, and the Yiddish language was now used for military communication, as well as for cultural and folkloric expression, such as poetry and song. This is a delightful album, full of energy and wit. The singing is magnificent and infectious. The CD booklet contains full texts of each song in English.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy.......2005-06-09

We love this album! The songs are soothing but not saccharine, invigorating but not forced. Our four year old loves to dance to it and I can't get the songs out of my head so it ranks ten/ten on our scale.

5 out of 5 stars When the Rabbi danced.......2005-06-04

This wonderfully performed collection of familiar songs from the once vibrant Yiddish culture of Eastern Europe is a great addition to my music library. While many of the songs are classics which I remember well from my childhood, the sweetness and elegance of the presentation by Counterpoint add significantly to their impact. Even though most of the European Jewish community was destroyed in the holocaust, these wonderful melodies survived to inspire us today, and to remind us that all was not lost. The arrangements, harmonies and solos are marvelous, and the Yiddish and Hebrew pronunciation are flawless.
It's obvious that a lot of work by some very talented people went into creating this album. Listening to it brings back many bittersweet memories that stir my emotions - It is my sincere hope that Counterpoint will continue to perform such music in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars You must own this CD!.......2005-02-22

What makes this collection of melodies unique is the marriage of traditional tunes with the less frequently heard songs of resistance and longing from the dark time of the Holocaust.
The beautifully arranged and performed vocals are, by turns, haunting and spirited, mournful and whimsical, taking the listener through the full range of emotions. To hear Counterpoint in concert is an unforgettable experience. This equally stirring CD will leave you feeling just as proud and uplifted, as expressed by the closing words of the final song (Zog Nit Keynmol)..."We are here!"

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of songs!.......2005-01-03

This collection of Hebrew and Yiddish songs, arranged by Counterpoint conductor Robert de Cormier and Viktor Ullmann, offers a unique view into Jewish life of the shtetl to the Nazi-used Czech town of Terezin and the underground Jewish resistance of WWII. From the "young widowed mother sitting by the cradle" in "Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen" ("Raisins and Almonds"), to the uplifting "Zog nit Keynmol" ("Never say that you are on the Last Road"), the 25 songs on the CD are superbly performed by Counterpoint. Skillful instrumentals accompany a first-rate choral group, and the stylistic arrangements retain the flavor of the genre. "When the rabbi danced" deserves a place in any collection.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a must-have!.......2004-12-27

I don't speak Yiddish. I am not a child - or relative - of Holocaust survivors. But this CD resonates for me in a unique way. I keep it in my car CD player and play it over and over. The evocative cumulative effect of the quality of Counterpoint's voices, the arrangements and the obvious poignancy and humor of the lyrics is hypnotic. I've given the CD as gifts to friends- to both Jews and non-Jews -and have not only received enthusiastic thanks and praise for the CD, but requests for information on how to buy more for their friends and family!

Product Description

The world is a ghetto, just like the 70s band War used to say. We live in a global neighborhood where there are more ghettos in the world than upper-class enclaves, sleepy suburban tract homes and middle-class row houses combined. Dave Ghetto repping Camden, New Jersey brings forth his solo debut. Love Life? is warm and filled with real soul while still keeping the subject matter raw and gritty much like the city that produced this witty wordsmith. The musical backdrop and features are provided by Tony Galvin, Denaun Porter (D12), 9th Wonder, Square, Cee-Lo Green, Phonte of Little Brother, Mystic, YahZarah , each bringing their talents adding to the classic sound of Love Life? as a whole cohesive unit. His album is already being compared to many classics, reconfirmed by many features in magazines. "Love Life?" caters to EVERYONE. This album is not targeted to one niche, IT IS MUSIC and already getting huge acclaim: "Dave Ghetto is street, lyrical, floetic, and brings me home to the game naturally" Fat Joe "DG brings me back to the HIP HOP I love to produce, Heads will be bobing." Just Blaze Dave Ghetto is simply the truth...this is what hip hop needs...dope beat wit dope lyrics...this went into my rotation from day 1 DJ Jazzy Jeff Dave Ghetto is one of the flyest emcees I know. Some rappers (like Jigga & Mos) are just soooo natural and Dave is definitely one of those emcees. Whether hes uplifting the young cats with one of his classic stories or just making a party jam hes always so finesse about it. I wish hip hop had more emcees like Dave!!! - Jack Splash of Plantlife Dave is part of what's good with Hip-Hop. It's been a long time coming but he has arrived with styles that remind me why I love this craft. Mystic

4 out of 5 stars (4+half star) I LOVE this more than LIFE!!.......2006-08-21

If like me, you've become totally disillusioned with the state of hiphop in general and the total lack of high standard of mc's then this is for you. Not only does DAVE GHETTO rock a mic on a whole other level but he also has an almost unnatural uncanny voice that sounds like MOS DEF. Now let me emphasise this "he doesnt sound similar, he actually sounds like Mos Def." This is honestly the album that Mos should have made instead of the weak "the new danger". Not only does Dave Ghetto sound like him but he actually delivers flows with alot more humour in them, in short, in my opinion he's better. The only reason i didnt give this 5stars was i found the production abit too relaxed+jazzy at times and would've preferred 1 or 2 more uptempo tracks. A very minor complaint when you get the pleasure of hearing this body of work, believe me. As i just stated the production is really smooth with jazzy horns and cool keys laced over funky basslines+beats. His lyrical scope is excellent as Dave shows us a wide range of topics that he tackles almost effortlessly. Standout cuts are "day in, day out", "static" (brilliant tale of a bad relationship), "the game", "ready for war" (awesome), "thats that joint" and the hilarious "groupie sex". But really any of the tracks could be regarded as standouts, there isnt a skipable track in sight. A must have for any hiphop fans collection.

5 out of 5 stars proper tings!!.......2006-06-11

absolutely hot!! i'm a neo soul junkie, but i was actually feeling this!! i think its cos there were elements of the basic neo soul sound in some songs, but anywayz....the production is HEAVY.. laawd hav mercy!! jus go and buy it!!........

HE REMINDS U OF MOS DEF. LET ME PUT IT THIS WAY, IF THE MINSTREL SHOW IS THE SICKEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR, THAN DAVE GHETTOS LOVE LIFE? IS NOT FAR BEHIND, NO JOKE, ITS THAT DOPE. 4 out of 5 stars "The Hill Top!" "The Hill, Hill Top!!".......2005-09-05

This is Cool-C's 2nd and last album. A good album, but no way near as good as his classic debut. It has production from Steady B, but it just can't measure up to his debut. The "Hill Top Hustlers" along with Steaby B put out strictly classics in the 80's, this one isn't their best work. Unfortunately Cool-C sits today in death row awaiting execution in the state of Pa. for killing a female Police Officer during a botched bank robbery.
