True to his Crime Dog name, McGruff breaks no laws and plays it safe on his debut disc, Destined to Be. The Harlem-based rapper got his first break in 1995 on Big L's "8 Is Enough," and he was the unidentified MC on Monifah's "I Miss You"; he spent the intervening years lying relatively low, contributing tracks that often showed up on mix tapes while working on this, his first full-length. Ghetto music at its best!.......2007-03-30

I Heard Mcgruff trough listening to Big L, and i loved how he brought dope vers' every single time, so i had to buy this.. i dident really know what to expect so i just went ahead and copped it.
i was really suprised on how the album went down, like one of these dude's said.. its not your obvious hiphop head album, this is ghetto music at its best. Mcgruff's flow is straight fire, underground and raw! his lyrical content is just above average to me, the production was alright.. better than Big L's debut if you ask me.. anyways this is great album for any hiphop fan, also Big L fans would enjoy this.. Harlem music! Gruff's the real deal.. i'd give it 4,5 out of 5. but since you cant do that.. im'a give it a 4 mic. cause its a dope album, but not a classic tho.. PEACE

McGruff is the best kept secret in rap over the last 11 years. His flow is simply flawless, just as good as the likes of Big L, Biggie, and some of the greatest rappers your ears have ever heard. "Destined to be" is truly one of rap's hidden gems. If you liked Notorious B.I.G., you will love this CD, I'd bet my life on it. Also check out both of Nature's CD's and the last 2 Masta Ace CD's for more sleeper classics. Oh yeah, and Sticky Fingaz's "Kirk Jones" is also a must have. Some of the best CD's of all time, no b.s. I'D BET MY LIFE ON ALL OF THEM!!!!!!! DON'T LET PERCEIVED NEGATIVE THOUGHTS MAKE YOU HESITATE FROM GETTING ALL THESE CD'S RIGHT NOW. I'VE BEEN COVERING RAP FEVERISHLY THE LAST 15 YEARS!!!!!!! McGruff's album.......2003-04-10

I finally picked up this album a few days ago..and it's everything i expected it to be. Mediocre. There are however, a few jams on here(the track with Big L and Mase 'Danger Zone' being the best one). So, i guess if you're a really big fan of Big L this is worth getting.

McGruff is one of the best mc's in the game today. although because of label conflicts(uptown), he wasn't publicized as much as his other HARLEM WORLD COUNTERPARTS. NONETHELESS DON'T SLEEP ON HIM.

For his debut recording, Boston vocalist JoJo David teams up with extraordinary pianist Adam Birnbaum to create an intimate and timeless collection of classic and destined-to-be-classic ballads. David gets to the heart of every lyric, delivering each emotion and vulnerability as if experienced in real time. The context is masterfully set with Birnbaum's playing, always tasteful, and in captivating dialogue with the melody.

From its title, "Small Hours" shares the same fabric of Frank Sinatra's innovative concept album "In the Wee Small Hours." The first track wraps the listener up in those "small" moments from the beginning of the CD and takes the listener on a tour of sublime throughout the album. David and Birnbaum take meticulous care with their arrangements and performances to get to the heart of the messages. In the standards "Imagination," "But Beautiful", and "In the Wee Small Hours", the oft discarded and rarely heard verses to theses standards are resurrected and made essential to the matter here. Birnbaum takes a fresh interpretation of the Beatles' "Golden Slumbers," stretching its time while David indulges his beautiful tone in the soaring melody. They take John Hiatt's "Have A Little Faith" to an inspired turn with the blues. Birnbaum presents a haunting rendition of "Here's That Rainy Day", and with the hidden gems "Colors" and "Little Prayer", David reveals his wide-open heart and musical grace.

Great CD.......2007-02-11

This CD is great! The piano player, Adam, is a Juliard trained Jazz pianist (Juliard only takes 2 players a year!), and he is phenomenal. Jojo, the singer, is also extremely accomplished and I have seen him perform numerous times in Boston. Together they make an incredible album!

Highly recommended!
