Brand New have specialized in pain ever since the pop-punk emo-rage of their 2001 debut release Your Favorite Weapon. But they've outdone themselves on The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. If the songs on Weapon were paper cuts, the ones here are gaping chainsaw wounds, full of seismic, howling agony. The moody rumbles of 2003's Deja Entendu were pointing here, but this is something else, with Mogwai-level dynamic range and tracks that careen from introspection to fury and back again. Lyrically, lead singer Jesse Lacey's words remain excruciating and harrowing things, but that's nothing new. It's the music propping them up which gives this effort such depth and punch. "Degausser" starts so innocently, then uses a bridge augmented with a bitter children's chorus straight out of The Wall as a lead in to Lacey's bitter refrain of "I'll never say anything right." Then there's the nearly 8-minute "Limousine (MS Rebridge)," epic, and epically sad, constantly threatening to descend into pure cacophony (and eventually succeeding). Repeated listens will tune your ear to the band's still-intact pop sense (especially on "Not the Sun" and "The Archers Bows Have Broken"), which keeps the record lively and unpredictable, and away from becoming a depressing, head-in-the-oven mope. Brand New went through three years of intense recording sessions to make it happen, but it was worth the effort. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-07-12
The worship project, too!.......2007-06-16
Brand New Day is Jonathan Butler's second full solo offering of inspirational music. The project could have easily been titled "The Worship Project Too" or "The Worship Project 2" for it is a glorious rendering of inspiring and uplifting compositions that I find are love songs to Jesus Christ and music with a message for the rest of us.
The South African born Butler, known in some circles as an accomplished smooth jazz guitarist and vocalist/R&B artist, is absolutely unashamed with sharing his personal relationship with Christ with the masses. Just as he so fervently did on his previous inspirational effort, he again demonstrates his ministry in song here. Butler is more than a guitar playing genius - he is an outstanding vocalist, accomplished writer, arranger and producer. Jonathan is from a very musical family and being the last born of 12 children, it appears that perhaps, God saved the best for last?
Brand New Day offers you 13 wonderful tracks and assisting Jonathan in the production area is the very capable, Luther "Mano" Hanes. who also assisted in the expert engineering of this project. My faves on this work include, "Brand New Day", "Mercy" (featuring Jonathan's daughter, Jodie), "Let The Redeemed Say So", "We Love to Praise Your Name" and " He Said He Would."
Jonathan Butler: "Brand New Day" - a blessing from beginning to end.

There is a difference between being an inspired musician and an informed musician. Sting is the latter. As always, he surrounds himself with ultratalented artists: this time around Stevie Wonder, Branford Marsalis, James Taylor, guitarist Dominic Miller, and the prince of rai Cheb Mami, fill the roster. Brand New Day exhibits about as many musical styles as there are tracks, all encased in dense, meticulous production. The album begins promisingly. "A Thousand Years" pulses atop a lush, two-note foundation. "A Desert Rose" folds trilling Algerian pop into trip-hop. Melodic, late-night jazz ballads dominate the middle portion of the collection. But Sting's preoccupation with odd-numbered time signatures prevents the songs from grooving, while the choruses are yawns. "Fill Her Up" (no, not "Fill 'Er Up"), a country tune, represents Sting at his most self-indulgent. Listening to one of the wealthiest musicians in pop singing "Got no money to invest / Got no prospect / Or education / I was lucky to get the job at this gas station" requires a heroic suspension of disbelief. The song morphs into this gospel number where Sting and a supporting chorus chant "You gotta fill 'er up with Jesus! / You gotta fill her up with life!" Who knew unleaded could be so rousing? --Beth MassaCustomer Reviews:

While anything but novel, the follow-up to Brand New's emo-punk-blast debut Your Favorite Weapon features unexpected touches and wisps of maturity. YFW was all about the rage and misery of young, explosive love, presented with Weezer-like hooks. Deja Entendu isn't really over it yet; lead singer Jesse Lacey still sounds damaged and full of self-loathing on mopey, post-Smiths pop like "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot." But amidst the Jimmy Eat World choruses are experiments with sudden dynamic shifts and style (like Lacey channeling Adam Duritz for "Play Crack The Sky"), along with ruminations about the misery of cancer ("Guernica"). If Deja Entendu sounds like the work of musicians discovering their talents, it's also about learning that desperate heartache isn't just about girls who don't call back. --Matthew CookeCustomer Reviews:

Better and more mature than all the other stupid emo music out there........2007-03-17
With that said, let me talk about this album. Like I said, I don't like emo or punk music because of it's teenage angst lyrics and it's over the top and annoying yelling and screaming. I listen to Sarah Mclachlan, Hooverphonic, Fiona Apple, The Pretenders, and Cibo Matto, I also like classical music and film music. I have nothing against lyrics about sadness because I have a mental disorder so I understand unhappiness but I just don't like it when it's all about some high school crush who never called you back. I never really experienced that in high school because I had a more mature adult life in high school and still do. I herd Brand New's first album, Your Favorite Weapon and really did not like it because well you know why but when I herd this I was blown away, the songs are dark and atmospheric, great music to listen to on Halloween, it's almost like a more heavy version of Sarah Mchlachlan with its mature lyrics and melodies, oh the melodies are really beautiful, I don't have a favorite becaue all the songs are perfect. Wonderful lyrics about fear of all the scary things in this messed up world that is more serious than a heart break over a high school crush.
Great Album.......2007-03-12

Pick It Up!
i bought deja entendu first..........2006-03-13
the only song that was remotely close to their sophmore album was "soco amaretto lime". everything else sounds very immature compared to what i heard in deja. but that was what i LOVED about it! i'm a big fan of taking back sunday, matchbook romance (first album), green day, blink 182 and stuff like that. "your favorite weapon" basically combined the best stuff of all of them. it's upbeat, angry lyrics that sport a young attitude, yet are skillfully crafted so the angst and fun of it comes out. the hooks are totally catchy. but the best thing i liked about this album was the way it made me feel. i'm 22 and i'm listening to this the first time and it made me feel young and reckless again (in a good way !)
Great Cd.......2006-02-27
Great Songs and Great variety.
The Shower Scene - 8/10 A good opener, but not one of my favorites.
Jude Law and a Semester Abroad - 10/10 This song got me into Brand New. It's one of the best on the album.
Sudden Death in Carolina - 9/10 Also a great song. i love the opeing riff.
Mix Tape - 9/10 This one starts off slow but gets better and the ending is great.
Failure By Design - 8.5/10 This song is pretty good, but gets old.
Last Chance To Lose Your Keys - 8.5/10 See above song
Logan To Government Center - 9/10 I really like this song. It starts out kind of mellow which is different but great. I love the lyrics too.
The No Seatbelt Song - 7/10 This song is an acoustic song and in my opinion very forgettable. I usually skip this one.
Seventy Times 7 - 10/10 Great Song! Awesome solo in the beginning, great lyrics, awesome music. A toss-up with track 2 for the best on the album
Secondary - 9/10 another great song
Magazines - 9.5/10 I love this one too. Not quite the caliber of Seventy Times Seven but still awesome.
Soco Armaretto Line - 9/10 This is another acoustic but much better than The No Seatbelt Song. One of my favorite acoustic songs of any band.

Story of faded glory.......2007-03-25
And in "Brand New By Tomorrow," he changes sounds about a dozen times, seamlessly skipping through styles like a stone over water -- a sort of folky Beatlesy pop inflected with some delightful electronica, with songwriting that hovers somewhere between introspection and depression.
It opens on a strong note: "Color of Your Blues," which tries to reshape the traditional blues with some grinding fuzzy guitar and a backing chorus during certain lines. "I feel naked wherever I go/people can see/it's in my face/and when I breathe/it's the story of faded glory/life is made up of all that you lose," Mark sings quietly.
He follows that up with a series of pop songs that hit an unusually eclectic note -- peppy pop with violins and drums, blippy electropop, mellow guitar tunes, tinkly little ballads, folksy-edged pop melodies, and your ordinary guitarpop laced with sharp, rapid beats. Then in the last song, he goes completely wild -- a crazy, funky dancepop tune!
"Brand New By Tomorrow" isn't quite Money Mark's most inspired piece of work -- that would have to be 1998's "Push The Button." This album even sounds a bit like it, with its electic pop pieces. But "Brand New By Tomorrow" is more focused on its theme than on trying out new sounds.
Part of that comes from Mark's voice -- a little rough and gravelly, and even light at times, as if he is hiding his feelings. And he can twist electronica, guitar, drums and a bit of strings into whatever kind of song, and whatever mood. Tinkly stuff, warm guitars, or just complex twining pop tunes, with layers of strings just under the retro synth and solid drums.
It's more cheerful than his lyrics, which seem to be centered on the decay of a relationship. His poignant writing is full of "faded glory," black butterflies, and other bittersweet topics. "Everyday I Die A Little" overdoes the angst, but in most other songs he strikes the delicate balance between being sad and being mopey. "Pretend you sleep/it's your security/no one can wake you/don't fade tonight..." he sings sadly over a quiet guitar.
Money Mark is in good form in "Brand New By Tomorrow," which doesn't forge much new territory, but deserves kudos for being a musically adept, appealingly bittersweet piece of work. Very solid.

Funk 101, for sure. We may never totally understand how James Brown took his music from the earlier styles of R&B he assimilated to the feverish development of the harder, more modern sound of records ranging from "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to "Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud," but here's another chance for us to listen in awe. In addition to long versions of the period's cornerstones, Foundations of Funk offers an alternate take of "Cold Sweat" and live versions of "Licking Stick-Licking Stick" and "Mother Popcorn"--the latter achieving a meltdown that puts the Brown band on the same side of the street as Funhouse-era Stooges.
