Aaron Neville is one of the only singers alive with a voice soulful, strong, and emotionally pure enough to warrant comparisons to Sam Cooke--easy to understand upon hearing his new gospel-oriented collection, "Devotion." With an intensity you just don't hear enough of, he tackles some of the great songs of the genre, such as "Mary Don't You Weep" and "Banks of the River Jordan." Those songs share space with a few originals, as well as ingeniously sung covers of pop standards such as "I Shall Be Released," "Bridge over Troubled Water," and "Morning Has Broken"--all done in the stirring, tuneful way that only Aaron Neville can achieve. As is the case these days on almost any solo recording by a performer over the age of 20, there are guest stars: able-voiced brother Ivan is on here, while adult contemporary act Avalon and diva wannabe Rachel Lampa attempt, admirably, to hold their own with the great singer. Okay, it's gonna sound clichéd, but this record really is as rock solid as its message of faith. --Mike McGonigal

Being a BIG music lover, I was Very happy with the quality of this DVD-Audio.

The DVD side offers 5.1 music (So sweet)

I have a High End System set-up in (Denon's Flagship)
I use pure silver cables with Merlins Filter and plug all silver too. All my cables are QED. I have a B&W CDM9 and M&K dual Sub, and much more!

* I have SACD which I would rate 9.5/10 for pure quality.
* I have DVD-Audio, which I would rate 9.8/10 for pure quality.
* I would also rate 2 channel set up correctly as being 9.9/10 for pure quality.
* I would rate New Dual Disc music 2/10 for pure quality

BUY this!!!

You will benefit and enjoy the quality of this album in DVD-Audio music...

Buy SACD or DVD-Audio or both. 10 times better!

It seems Aaron Neville gets inside every song he sings on this album, cover or original composition, and sings of higher love. His utter artistic beauty and sincerity will hopefully break down any misgivings people who normally avoid music with religious themes may have. If Neville suppressed this personal expression of his faith for the sake of greater record sales, I believe this world would be poorer for it. Regardless of your beliefs, treat yourself to this beautiful testament of suffering, joy, faith and love.

5 out of 5 stars What a talent!.......2003-11-10

I originally bought this DVD-A disk for my Mom, who is very religious. I listened to it at her house and immediately knew I had to have a copy. I've always know what a unique and beautiful voice Neville has, but I'm not a huge fan of religious music (other than Christmas music). This is just great music. Period. Some songs are superb and some are merely very good. Not a single bad song in the bunch. The teriffic surround sound makes the album that much more enjoyable. Also check out the Neville DVD-A "Believe," it is just a good as this one, but with completely different songs. What a talented performer!

5 out of 5 stars "The most slept on album by L.T.D.".......2007-02-04

In 1979 disco was in full swing and was only a year away from being officially dead...what a difference a year makes! Many band were still trying to keep up the th times and L.T.D. was no different. And although the band adjusted quite well with producer Bobby Martin still at the helm who knew a thing or two about dicso helping create the genre while at Philadelphia International Records, before it officially had a name. This also marked the first time in three years that the band had no number one r&b hit but was still quite an excellent album with the lead single "Stranger" which continues to receive plenty of airplay on most ol' school stations around the country. Other great tracks off this album are the disco-ish "Dance 'N' Sing 'N'",the midtempo "Sometimes" and the ballad "Promise You'll Stay". But as always theres a hidden gem on most L.T.D. albums and this time it's the album closer "Feel It" with its midtempo vibe and funky percussion. Jeffrey nails this song all the way through and I get a chills everytime I hear this song because it takes me back when I was a kid and my dad use to play this song over and over againby placing the needle on a certain spot of the record(still don't know how he does that). This is a great album but is very hard to find because it is out of print and apparrantly A&M didn't see the right to continue to make this album available in cd form, which by the way is the only one of the Jeffrey Osborne/Bobby Martin cds not available. Great album if you can dish out some heavy cash to a independent seller, which is the main reason I'm holding on to mine very closely. Peace.

L.T.D. at their best! The song say that you,ll be mine is really a song that was over looked as far as air play. Also the song somtimes, the whole cd is worth hearing again and again enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars You HAD to BE THERE!.......2004-08-07

Any fan of L.T.D. knows that this album, their last with Jeffrey Osborne, was slammin'. If I had to rate it, 5 stars would be the minimum. I have seen them twice in concert and they THREW DOWN both times! As far as the jams, Say THAT You'll be Mine is the one along with Stand Up L.T.D. and as far as the slow, Stanger is untoppable. The words have a special meaning for me and a certain young lady who is out there somewhere.............

Innocence, purity, exuberance and sweetness is Jaya Lakshmi...the album is a musical Lotus Blossom that celebrates harmony and devotion.

4 out of 5 stars Ocean Of Mercy, Jaya Lakshmi's first Album..........2006-10-01

I enjoy this album immensely.
However I like her newer album, Jewel of Hari much much better. and the funny thing is that these albums both grew on me, kind of crept up over a period of time. In fact when I first bought Jewel of Hari I actually hated it. No I really hated it. I don't know why, it was just one of those strong first impressions. But what is weird is that I listed it to sell on Amazon, and by the time I had a buyer, I popped it back into the CD player for a listen, and lo and behold, i loved it. So of course I had to ship it out. But I copied some of the songs to my computer. I ended up loving the songs soooo much over time, that I had to go out and get the album again, and this one as well.
This is her first album. What a spirited Woman musician. She went against all odds, traveling with her young daughter, a single parent, singing to her guru, and totally emersing herself in Divine Bliss, in the Ocean of Mercy. Smiles to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet voice.......2006-08-13

If you enjoy chanting and Kirtan, then this is a great CD to purchase. Jaya Lakshmi has a sweet voice, a voice like and angel. This is a great CD for yoga,(I'm a yoga instructor), even massage, or just plain relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For A Devotee.......2005-03-21

I would like to think that if something similar to this was first chanted thousands of years ago, it was done with the same soul-filled passion that Jaya Lakshmi does it with. Her beautiful voice and spiritual fervor blend together for a truly unique musical and mystical experience. The music is performed flawlessly, as English mixes with what I think is Sanskrit, in this lovely and moving piece.

Your sweet face
is like a million suns
flooding my mind

Oh You have captured me
with your beauty
now this heart
is no longer mine

~from Ocean Of Mercy

Fans of music from India are sure to love this. The often upbeat melody, that at times seems almost modern, will also appeal to anyone that is interested in hearing well played music from another culture. The sublime voice of Jaya Lakshmi becomes almost ethereal as she reminds me of a beautiful gopi dancing the Rasa.

5 out of 5 stars It's about devotion.......2005-02-12

Mr. Anderberg obviously doesn't realize that the single focus of this album is the love and adoration of Krishna, not the prattling of "subjects in any way related to eastern religion" that he seems to think it is about. If he wants to call adoration of God "drivel, pure and simple", well, that's his business. I think he totally missed the point. The whole record is devotional--pure, loving, and sexy.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The thing I love about this disc is it sounds like everyone's having a blast.......2005-06-29

The thing I don't like about it is all the overdubs. On most of the numbers the leader's playing between five and ten instruments, including a variety of horns, keyboards, and percussion. What's the point? He has a fine group of core musicians. If he wanted more coloration, why not just include a bunch of other regulars and guests? What is he, the new Ray Charles (who, on a particular session, dissatisfied with the sound his backup singers were achieving, fired them all and overdubbed all their parts himself)?

I'm also not real keen on the two vocal numbers. As usual, it's not that there's anything particularly wrong with them; it's just that they break the mood carefully established by the instrumentals, introducing a quite different, and intrusive (at least to these ears), sensibility.

Finally, Pine has a tendency to play too many notes. I don't think he's never been a first-rate improviser, and even though his soloing's improving, he still has a tendency to disguise his lack of ideas behind a flurry of notes.

But enough carping; there are also many fine, even brilliant, things about this disc. First, I'm pretty much blown away by the soundscape he regularly achieves (maybe all those overdubs work pretty well, after all!). Second, Pine seems completely familiar and comfortable with an enormous variety of musics--everything from reggae (as well as ska and rocksteady) to township to hip-hop to post bop to North African to blues to tender ballads to electronica. And, unlike a lot of world-jazz wannabes, he's not just messing around with cool forms; he seems committed to thoroughly digesting them and stamping them with his own unique take. Indeed, therein lies his greatest strength as a musician: conceptualizing some very cool aural palettes and realizing them with great strength and imagination.

I don't think he's recorded his ultimate disc yet, but he's getting close. One of these days he'll just nail it, and we'll have a masterpiece. In the meantime, this is a very fine session, one that's steadily ingratiating itself and worming its way into my regular rotation. ****1/2

          Album Description

Crooning over a back-in-the-day riff reminiscent of 70s soul, there's nothing "neo" about Marlon Saunders. Blending the intense devotion to groove that made 70s r&b so great with a modern edginess steeped in the powerful spoken word dazzle of hip hop, Saunders recreates a movement without sounding like a knock-off sampler. Which is exactly what he had in mind.

"I want to combine the richness of the 70's - all of it, the music and psyche of black folks, the sense of beauty and awareness - and incorporate that into what I find unique and special about today's music," he says. And the emphasis, like his idols Marvin and Stevie and Rufus, will be songwriting. "In r&b music, we need to go back to the basic songwriting," says Saunders. "I was listening to a Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway record the other day and I was amazed at the beauty of it. It's simple recording in terms of instrumentation, but those sturdy, beautiful songs transcend everything. You can do anything to that music - bop to it, make love to it, hang out with your friends to it, cook a good meal to it. I want my music to have the same effect. Or like the way Curtis Mayfield could marry the groove with the spiritual concept to the lyrics and still keep it ambiguous. I want my music to have that sense of discovery."

OK, so I bought this CD based on the reviews and all I can say is WHERE HAS MARLON BEEN ALL THIS TIME! This is a great CD folks! If you're into REAL soul music, look no further than "Enter My Mind". Marlon is a great singer/songwriter. Very much of the Curtis/Marvin vibe. The songs take me back to when I was growing up in the '70's, where music had much more substance than it does today. I'm VERY happy I bought this CD and you will too (especially if you love REAL SOUL MUSIC)!

So I actually came across the album in the store one day in the city and decided to give it a shot.....well......it was a FAR shot.

Though I would hate to say to not believe what you read because I would simply love for you to believe me when I say...DON'T GET TOO EXCITED OVER THIS GUY.

I see now-a-days no matter how bad the singer may be, if they bring something to the music scene that is reminiscent of the old days, people want to praise it because "it is different from all the contemporary stuff you hear today". BUT, just because he brings back the old style by NO MEANS makes this man any better.

You can check out some samples on the official website marlonsaunders.com--which I should have done to start with. See for yourself. Save a few pennies.

2 out of 5 stars what IS this?!.......2004-12-14

I am an avid music lover who doesn't mind taking risks when it comes to purchasing music from an artist i've never heard of even if i haven't previewed the album. At the expense of good money, you win some, you lose some. After reading the positive reviews concerning this album i was pretty anxious to give it a listen. BIG MISTAKE. This album is complete garbage. The only reson i gave it 2 stars is because on a couple of the tracks i dug the lyrics. But, as a whole the album is crap. This brother has a lack of control over his voice, bad pitch, and attempts to impress with poorly executed and mostly failed vocal acrobatics. It pained me to force myself to listen to a complete track without skipping to the next song. Nothing about his style is catchy nor is it unique. Not to say that catchy is good (i prefer more unique artists) but this cat couldn't even pull off a catchy hook. In too many songs he *ATTEMPTED* a flavor similar to Maxwell and sounded so bad he actually hurt my feelings. People, there is a reason why the songs on this album cannot be previewed, for if they were you surely would not purchase this cd. So, as a forewarning to all lovers of genuinely good music...stay far far away from this album, for my copy rests in the trash at this very moment.

          4 out of 5 stars Mr. Marlon.......2004-06-17

Marlon Saunders is one of my voice coaches. He rocks. This album is cool too.

          4 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Soul.......2004-06-01

Saunders is best known as a founding member of the acid jazz combo Jazzhole. Though his songwriting is featured prominently in the group context, his vocals typically only adorn a few tracks. On this first solo album his singing is pushed to the fore to match his songwriting contributions. The result is surprisingly old-school, given that fellow Jazzhole founder Warren Rosenstein produced over half the album's tracks (Shawn V. Lucas filled the chair for the rest). The backings are sophisticated, but smooth and melow, without the aural explorations or jamming passages of Jazzhole. This keeps the focus on Saunders and his lyrics - right where it should be for a solo album. A fine record for playing with the lights low.
