4 out of 5 stars Oooooooooozinnnnng sensuality..........2007-02-02

If you are reading this, you probably know about Leon Ware, his connection with "I want You" (Marvin Gaye) and his struggle to get his music on the market, explained in part in the inner booklet. I have four albums of Leon Ware and this is probably the one that delivers the most. Why ?

Well, for starters, you get 15 tracks and 56 minutes of music, whereas you are around 35-40 minutes in his other cds (Leon Ware, Rockin you eternally). Also, you get the "original" version of two tracks included on Marvin Gaye's "I want You". I find it always interesting to compare a final product with the creator's project. You get that here. And if you are a fan of Minnie Ripperton (another brilliant voice gone too soon), you will be in ecstasy; she sings on "Comfort" (the original version of "come live with me ") and "Instant love".

Having said this, it is true that Leon Ware is not the best or greatest voice I've heard, even if he sounds better on some tracks than others (tell me what you think of "With you" for instance). He is a great songwriter though. All the tracks on this collection are oozing with sensuality. It does sound outdated to some, but to me this is classic soul from the 70s. Well worth your money, but you need to listen to it with a positive approach and placing it in context. You will like it if you like Bobby Womack, Norman Connors, Average White Band or even Curtis Mayfield and Teddy Pendergrass.

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2005-01-05

Being the consummate Marvin Gaye fan that I am, I felt that I eventually had to pick up this release by Leon Ware. After I read the liner notes, however, I couldn't shake the feeling that Mr. Ware apparently had a point to make or a bone to pick ("I wrote those songs for myself and didn't want to give them to Marvin so now I'M gonna do them!"). While I think that Mr. Ware is a wonderful songwriter, I really don't care for his voice. Nor do I care for his versions of the songs (albeit his own) that Marvin burned into my psyche when he so masterfully and sensuously performed them on his "I Want You" album. For me no one will ever be able to do them like Marvin. The Minnie Riperton duets were a nice touch.

2 out of 5 stars Shockingly Disappointing.......2003-10-05

I'm very optimistic about an artist's work and I'm not quick to judge anybodys work as disappointing unless it's just that. Being that Mr.Ware produced and co-wrote one of the greatest albums of all time(I Want You). I was definitely eager to hear him do his own work. Although the writing is pretty good on the album, the songs just dont seem to jump out at you. There is not much to it that would makes you want to hear it again and again, and I'm a huge fan of of 70's soul. Maybe that is what Motown thought also, maybe they thought fans would rather spend their last on a sandwich. Which is maybe the reason Mr.ware didn't get the support for this album that he believed he deserved. I still honor him for his genius as a writer particularly with the work he's done with Marvin and Minnie Riperton.

5 out of 5 stars a must have...........2003-08-09

This is a must have for true listeners of good 70's soul music.
Especially if your into Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye, Lamont Dozier, etc. It's a wonder why he doesn't get more credit than he has gotten for his contributions to Motown's songwriting staff, and being the mastermind for Gaye's "I want you" album.
Great music, chord changes, background arrangements, and lyrics.
The perfect suite for seducing your lover. You must get it, and get familiar with Marvin's producer, and co-writer of one of his finest 70's albums.

5 out of 5 stars Truly one of the best!.......2003-08-02

I had the original recording on vinyl and was so upset when it was lost while moving! Thankfully, this re-release is worth every penny. The CD was released around the same time as Marvin Gaye's "I Want You", so you can hear the simular sound and feel of "Musical Massage". The sound is excellent and as a fan on rare gems, there are four unreleased bonus tracks. "I Wanna Be Where You Are" and "Comfort aka Come Live With Me, Angel" featuring Minnie Riperton were released overseas with the original 10 tracks and I am happy to say that Motown/Universal has decided to include it in this release. This CD will make you a either a new fan or remind you that Leon Ware is truly a talent MUCH overlooked!

5 out of 5 stars another sensual set from Leon Ware.......2007-06-07

When I listened to the opening cut on this cd, I loved it.
Not only is this a great cd, but it has the nerve to grown on you
more and more with each listen. I can not single out one particular
cut, because like "Taste the Love" there is a continuing theme. I just
love it all, and plan on ordering the other great cd's by Leon Ware
that I have missed. In a time of offensive Hip-Hop music, it's great
to have a lengend and master come out with a old school flavored cd.
Leon Ware was Marvin Gaye's soul mate. God how I miss that man.
I wish they had done at least one more lp together. When I listen to
Leon Ware I always think of Marvin.

4 out of 5 stars unheralded , underappreciated, and almost forgotten...........2001-10-29

.......Again, it takes JAPAN to release a cd , as the American music industry neglects musics with "limited commercial potential".

As noted Leon Ware was the producer & architect of one of Marvin Gaye's finest lp/cds, "I WANT YOU", which Mr.Ware composed & produced, for the most part.

I imagine soon , some of the new wave of young "Brasilianists" will soon check this cd out-- current FAVORITE of the "world music club scene" Marcos Valle was a collaborator with Ware in the early 80s.
("Rockin You Eternally" was a modest hit for the two, and much of the currently unavaliable Marcos Valle lp "A Vontade de Rever Voce" features 4 0f the 8 tunes cowritten by Ware/Valle.)

This cd, release in 1982 features contributions from Valle(co-writer of 3 songs), Janice Seigel from Manhattan Transfer, Bill Champlin(Sons of Champlin/Chicago) and Airto Moreira/Flora Purim,( a real treat on 1 track!).(Percussionist Laudir de Oliveira was the "broker" that brought Airto and Valle's talent to Leon Ware, and also the rock group "Chicago" later !)

This cd may be TOO SLICK productionwise for some, I thought so when it was released as an lp almost 20 yrs ago-- what with the same L.A. session guys everyone was using at that time. (most notably by Steely Dan in the "Aja" fase).

Why do I enjoy Leon Ware, and why is he so "unknown"??
I think it is because his compositions are far more complex than the usual "steppers soul music" that becomes a "hit"- the melodies arent instantly hummable "ditties", there is songwriting craft at work here, hehehehe!

You hear the smooth chord progressions, born of the marriage of classic "doo-wop" and jazz style chord progressions, and Ware's passionate vocal delivery
      .
The incredible basslines of Chuck Rainey, and soul jazz guitar of David T. Walker make "Words of Love" a feature tune, along with the funky romp "Why I Went to California".The ballad, "Deeper Than Love" is beautiful, and hints of his collaboration and influence on Marvin Gaye's best efforts.
This cd aint perfect, as some sub-disco crap and the aforementioned slickness sometimes gets annoying, but if you listen "deeper", you will appreciate what a fine composer Leon Ware is, and he is an INCREDIBLY PROVOCATIVE VOCALIST.

Give this cd a go, and pick up a nice companion in Marvin Gayes' "I Want You" if you dont own it already.

5 out of 5 stars The world of leon ware and marvin gaye.......2000-07-19

(This is second review, first was not complete before I accidently sent it.) As stated the album tracks keep coming at you taking you higher and higher from the beginng track to the end of the album. The first time I heard this album I thought I was listening to marvin gaye, not realizing that leon and marvin had known each other for quite some time, that this same leon wrote and sang on the"I want you".album with marvin releasted in 1976.Its really a shame because of fate that they hadn't collaberated on more projects together.Getting back to leon.this album has stood the test of time and sounds like it was recorded last week.Thats the difference between classic soul and some of todays music. It is my sincerest hope that leon will one day come to the Berkeley bay area and perform, we all know he's also a great producer!with all my love to leon ware fans. Eugene F.Evans

4 out of 5 stars Marvin Gaye's collaborator can do it on his own !.......1999-06-02

I bought this CD because I heard that Leon Ware had a big part in making Marvin Gaye's album I Want You. At first, I was desapointed: it was not exactly the same kind of voice, not the same kind of music even if it's the same kind. Listening it again and again, I finally found that this CD was great. It has a pure sound of the 80's. I especially love "Why I came to California" and "Somewhere Deep Inside You" and enjoy the cool ans jazzy ballads. Leon Ware' greatest talent is somehow producing, cause this CD really sounds good!

Great album from great singer. I first heard it just a few weeks ago when I found an original 1979 cassette copy from a place near my house that specializes in records and old tapes. In almost no time the disco-ish "What's Your Name" became one of my very favorite songs.

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM MUST BE EXPOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-17

I really think this album didn't get the true recognition it deserved.
An incredible voice and an incredible production (which by the way he produced) it's just a shame that this album is not recognized by a lot of people.
        A true masterpiece!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars love you leon...but CLUB SASHAY??.......2002-01-07

Am a big, long time fan but this would not be the first choice of his albums. The minnie ripperton tune is v good but the cheese factor elsewhere is way too high.....titles like "what's your name" and "club sashay"......bit naff. Brilliant production throughout but no real useful samples or classic basslines/ chord sequences like on his first album "leon ware" which is truly a master-work.

        5 out of 5 stars Supreme Soul.......2000-04-30

I think this album rates among the best Soul albums of all time.Leon has a very silky voice and he sings with such a sensitivity that emotions immediatly pour through your skin. That's what Soul music is about, and Leon acts like the master he really is. Before listening to Leon ware's music I assotiated his name with Marvin Gaye, since he had been the producer of the historical "I want you" album. But, even if I was ignorant of that collaboration, listening to his music would always remind me of Marvin's, because it shares the same sensual and emotional depth, making me believe that Leon is Marvin's "alter ego". This album consists in 9 solid songs, blended with a touch of jazz, in wich the highlight is, in my opinion, the superb version of Minni Riperton's "inside my love", called here "inside your love". After listening to "inside is love", it's clear evidence that, besides from being a top quality producer and songwritter, Leon Ware is also a great singer. The only thing I didn't like in this album is that it only takes 36 minutes. Anyway Leon's music will last forever!
