The Who's mighty catalog of beautiful, poignant, and often silly pop songs bashed out with Cassius Clay finesse has suffered in the past at the hands of multiple, butcher-shop best-ofs and horrible packaging. But this thrilling band--undeniably one of ye classicke rocke's greatest--gets the career-spanning entry-point compilation it deserves with the double-disc Ultimate Collection. The songs included here are no-brainers, for the most part--if they aren't huge hits like "My Generation," "I Can See for Miles," or "Baba O'Riley," they're long-standing fan favorites such as "Boris the Spider," "Pure and Easy," and "Squeeze Box." And while this reviewer wishes different songs were chosen from Tommy, and more than one tune was gathered from their arguably finest (and definitely silliest) album, The Who Sell Out, this record really isn't for fans (aside from the total trainspotter types) but for newcomers. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

I'm sure there are other Who compilations still available, who will satisfy classic Rock purists more than this "Ultimate". However, if you're just trying to increase your knowledge of how good British Rock became in the 1960s and 1970s, this The Who collection at no doubt will lead you to get later their entire album collection. Enjoy it!

Jimmy Buffett may have made his millions, but that doesn't mean that he has eased up on his workload. After releasing 33 albums, mounting grueling annual tours, and fashioning an entire industry and lifestyle out of his signature song "Margaritaville," Buffett trots out this two-CD collection. Yet, Meet Me in Magaritaville, which spans 30 years, isn't merely a retread of his long, storied career. Buffett has written two new songs for the package and re-recorded six alternative versions of fan favorites (including a moving version of "The Captain and the Kid," which he included for his ailing father, who died shortly after the album's release). He's also added two new cover songs--a spicy bossa nova version of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking" and the Beach Boys' "Sail on Sailor"--as well four live tracks, which shows the singer at his best, conjuring up his own Yuppie Atlantis, an idyllic place where no one has to wear shoes, the sun is always shining, the bar never closes, and Junior Mints are always available at every cinema. A must-have collection for every Parrothead (or aspiring Parrothead), if only for Buffett's track-by-track descriptions. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

A brave effort at cramming one disc full of Temptations classics, The Ultimate Collection nevertheless makes a couple of puzzling choices. Why, for instance, include "Error of Our Ways," a very minor mid-'90s hit, and ignore "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" or "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)," both number ones from their classic period? Still, for the price, it's hard to argue with. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Over a remarkable 30 years, Aerosmith has delivered near-perfect hybrids of rock and balladry, converting generations of listeners into devout fanatics. O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits drives chronologically through 30 of their best songs, providing a tour of the construction process. And what a process! Listen to "Mama Kin" and you might not recognize Aerosmith at all--here is a young Tyler, before finding his distinctive gritty wail, fronting a simple blues-bar band. But the phenomenal energy and synchronization that developed between Tyler and Perry starts here, and is followed up by successive wonders. "Dream On" captures plodding despair; "Last Child" bears witness to Tyler's mastery of harmony and shriek; "Back in the Saddle" explodes with swagger. Built from the low-end up, Aerosmith's heavy kick, driving bass lines, steady rhythm guitar, and blaring exclamation-point horns create a perfect foundation. And the dirty, harmonic souls of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry do what they do best--put on an over-the-top, flawless show. --Laura EtlingAlbum Description

Dude still got it.......2007-05-14
In a world of political correctness it's hard to write good old fashioned rock and roll lyrics well , you've missed the plot if that's your mindset rock music is about having a good time , aerosmith are the good time band ! This album is full of classics from there early days to the recent present and , are then a band !
So , forget about your corporate lifestyle , your investments , that new car and big house get back to were it was when you had long hair dirty jeans drank like a fish chased a few babes and , well you know what i mean ! God bless aerosmith !!
P.S. Apologies to anyone who finds this review offensive but as you know the truth hurts .
Same Old Song and Dance - Yet another Compilation but the one worth getting!.......2007-03-23
Disc One boasts one of the best collection of hard rock/blues recorded in the 70's. Each song is a classic representing the band on top of their game. Hungry, raw, rocking, sleazy and fun. There are a few tracks that should be included from this period but you can't fit them all in can you?
"Walk This Way" "Sweet Emotion" and "Dream On" all the big ones are here. "Season's Of Wither" is one underrated song, a highlight really.
The bands commercial comeback and commercial peak weaves into disc one and dominates disc 2 with well known material from their albums "Permanant Vacation" through to "Just Push Play", the latter providing the minor hit "Jaded" and a cool remix of the title track of that album. A couple of bonus tracks don't add much but "Come Together" and "Toys In The Attic" are good additions.
#1 smash hit, "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" the most well known of their latter, albeit uninspiring period. These days Aerosmith still have it in concert, but besides a decent middle of the road rock album half a decade ago, are in a flat spot as a recording entity and the release of another Hits compilation really highlights their lost muse for creating music.
Let's hope Aerosmith are back with one more classic album if they can steer clear of the gimmicks and focus on delivering like they once did.
Truly The Ultimate.......2007-03-12
This collection 'O Yeah' shows them from the 70s beginnings all the way through the 90s and beyond!
I would recommend this collection to any Aerosmith fan and really any fan of music in general, but I would also recommend getting the other 'greatest hits' package 'Young Lust' because it features a lot of songs from their Geffen years that aren't included on this release...O Yeah focuses on the Columbia years (it has some Geffen years songs but not enough) and the combination of this along with 'Young Lust' would give anyone a perfect overview of this group of music legends
I would still tell people who can afford it to go out and buy the entire catalog because it's really worth it but having 2 CDs with all the great hits is very convenient to have in your car
there are some new re-mixes of songs from their more recent albums which makes this worth having for those (like me) that already have the whole catalog, but really the two new songs alone are worth buying this,Girls Of Summer and Lay It Down are both great songs..but Girls Of Summer is actually one of the best Aerosmith songs ever recorded
I don't know how they do it but this band gets better all the time! (with the one exception of 'honking on bobo' but I hope they learned from that disaster)...if anyone would walk up to you and ask who Aerosmith is,this and Young Lust are the CDS you should play for them!
The Upside - an almost perfect overview of a brilliant career! This covers the early years, the Geffen years, and the columbia years
The Downside - Missing some important Geffen years songs, they completely ignore 'Done With Mirrors' on this release, and 'Night In The Ruts' and 'Rock In A Hard Place'
The Bottom Line - If someone asks you who Aerosmith is,play this and Young Lust..these are great packages and well worth the price...donutman says so!!!

There's a cynical adage that argues if you stand still long enough, history will eventually catch up with you. It's tempting to say that about Barry Manilow, an artist whose stubborn, quarter-century dedication to old-fashioned song craft and musical melodrama has earned him few critical praises but a loyal worldwide following in the millions. When a cult of 20-something would-be lounge lizards tried to cash in on Manilow's shtick in the 1990s, they distanced themselves from its emotional potency with telling dollops of irony and retro-hip cynicism--anything to keep from looking too sincere. This album serves up the high points of Manilow's long, successful career, rightly focusing on the long string of '70s hits that built both his legend and record label. They're a body of songs whose solid craftsmanship is undeniable, but it's Manilow's sincerity that crucially sells them--indeed, he didn't write "I Write the Songs," but who could doubt him? It's an odd tribute that much here--"Mandy," "Looks Like We Made It," "Copacabana," et. al.--has become the palette for a popular entertainment spectrum that somehow encompasses endless hotel piano bars on one flank and TV sketch-com parody on the other. Good to remember that kitsch, by definition, requires a deep and lasting impact on the culture. Manilow hasn't just embraced the "K" word; he's reveled in it with a smile--how could one frown through "Bandstand Boogie" and "Copa" anyway?--and elevated it to something approaching the transcendental through his sheer, joyous force of will. And if his latter work has been unabashedly nostalgic, how could anyone be surprised? --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' 25-cut disc is the single most impressive one of Motown's Ultimate Collection series (which features 17 artists). Combining Smokey's endlessly inventive twists on romance (good and bad) with the Miracles' handful of straight-up party hits, it showcases one of American pop's most sure-footed and touching acts. The frontman's prowess as singer, writer, and producer lights up each of these single mixes; less-celebrated tracks like "My Girl Has Gone," "(You Can) Depend on Me," and "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" stand as tall as the many oldies-radio staples featured here. (For much more, including "Mirage's" unstoppable flip side, "Come Spy with Me," check out the four-disc 35th Anniversary box set.) Robinson and his collaborators, both in and out of the group, regularly injected undeniable emotion into their creamy constructions, making for a stack of tracks that remain as relevant as the contemporary creations of fans Lennon-McCartney and Bob Dylan. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Or, you could buy this CD. (Highly recommended).
No R&B/soul collection would be complete without Smokey represented, and this exceptional Best Of anthology represents him admirably. At 25 cuts deep, it is virtually exploding with content, replete with must-have classics and unfamiliar gems. Like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, Robinson's voice evokes a visceral, emotional response. It has, of course, an ethereal beauty that sounds more suited to heaven than earth. The precision of the back-up harmonies and arrangements makes for an effect that is uniformly appealing, and genuine. This music is never overtly clever or self-conscious - it is masterfully crafted and sincere.
The generation doomed to endure hip-hop and rap would do well to take this CD out for a test drive, if only to discover that there was once music both pleasing to the ear and nourishing to the soul. Smokey spoke to women in a language that made them melt, a language men strained to learn and understand. Put on "I'll Try Something New." In 2:36, Robinson evokes the sentiments of romantic love in a way that is nothing short of transcendent.

This double CD collects not only Brother Ray's best-known '50s and '60s singles, but some choice semi-obscurities (the 1953 jump blues "Mess Around," his 1959 cover of Louis Jordan's "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'") that earn their places next to "What'd I Say" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." The man's originality and infectious feeling bleed through on each of these 36 tracks, whether he's transforming "One Mint Julep" or "America the Beautiful" or collaborating (separately) with Willie Nelson and Chaka Khan. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
