2 out of 5 stars disapointing.......2007-07-17

After an album of great originals the band gets cheap and does a mere 3 originals with a bunch of half baked covers. Cherry blossom clinic revisited is an unnecessarily stretched out re-do on their previous song, and hello susie is decent hard(er) rock. Why everyone thinks this album is great is beyond me..their first album is a true document of their songcraft ability, this album is a cop out.

5 out of 5 stars Side 2 (songs 4-6) alone earn this classic top honors........2007-07-04

We got to talking about this fantastic album a few nights ago on the discussion thread "YOUR TRIPPIN' ALBUM IS ON ITS WAY--WHAT IS IT?" (Most of those threads are a lot of fun, by the way...and very addictive to us music junkies.) I just shared my thoughts with joeindover in response to his knee-slappingly funny review and feel compelled to give my 2-cents' worth to the masses here.

Everything you've read here is pretty much right on the money, although I can't (yet) attest to the supposed lower-sounding quality of the CD. Guess I'll find that all out in due time. What I want to share was how I was made aware of this album. During the sweet summer of 1970--back when underground FM radio still blissfully existed--I was in Long Beach, California on vacation with my mom, between my sophomore and junior year of high school, and VERY much into the burgeoning English rock and prog-rock scene. In those days, the Moody Blues and King Crimson were my new gods. One afternoon, I was sitting in my living room, listening to what was then for me the Radio Station From Heaven: KABC-FM 95.5. There was so much unspeakably cool music I got turned onto that summer that I could be sitting here for another hour just chronicling it....but I'll never forget this particular afternoon. Seated there on my couch, I had my little portable mono Channel Master cassette recorder, microphone attached, pointed at the speaker of an inconsequential little FM clock radio, and filling up several C-60 cassettes with random recordings of what I was hearing on this fantastic radio station. After one commercial break, here came disc jockey Tony Pigg with the announcement, "Here's one from The Move, a Tom Paxton song called 'The Last Thing On My Mind.'" Well, I remember hearing the Chad Mitchell Trio's original country/folkie version of the song, so I kept the recorder going...

...and cornball and over-the-top as this might sound to some, this was one of the defining moments in my musical development. As I sat there listening to this band of Brits I'd not yet even HEARD of taking this sad little breakup song and turning it into a psychedelic, acid-drenched, acoustic and electric 12-string wah-wah guitar sound painting, I was just stunned. I couldn't move (pardon the pun) for the next 7 1/2 minutes. For me, it was like hearing "Question," "The Court of the Crimson King," Procol Harum's "Repent Walpurgis" or Yes's "Yours Is No Disgrace" for the first time. I swear this to you: those were moments that brought me to states of consciousness that tapped me lovingly on the top of my head to remind me that humanity--even with all its flaws--were still capable of creating great masterpieces in the world of music. When the song reached its very UNpretentious conclusion--with the final chorus still ringing in my ears in near-perfect CSN-style vocal harmoney--I couldn't set about to finding the album fast enough.

Here's what I discovered upon hearing it for the first time: I wasn't nearly as knocked out by Side 1 as I was by Side 2....that's just my opinion for all it's worth. But those 3 tracks on Side 2..."Fields of People," "Don't Make My Baby Blue," and the one I just raved about like a lunatic...for me amounted to 3 of the greatest tracks in a row in British prog history, 23 minutes of near-bliss. The psychedelia and interspersed humor of "Fields," the near heavy-metal interpretations of "Baby" and the concluding masterpiece alone made this album worth having...I can listen to those 3 songs even today and still get the initial rush of hearing them for the first time. But when it comes to "Last Thing," as I shared with joeindover, I think Roy should be humbly proud for coming up with such an exquisite arrangement of a very cool song, and I can only wonder what Tom himself would have thought of it.

For all of you uninitiated ones--especially those of you who might be exploring the founding days of the British progressive rock onslaught of the 70's--you'd be well advised not to let this one slip through your fingers. Cheers.....

4 out of 5 stars What else can be said?.......2007-03-09

For a band whose album output was small,The Move made the most of everyone they released. Roy Woods excellent songwriting and arrangement skills were always the high point of any Move album and of course great musicianship was a given. Highly recommened.

5 out of 5 stars Most Definitive 60's & Innovative 70's album you never heard of... .......2007-01-14

Back in the early 70's - when I was wearing out my A&M copy of SHAZAM - a friend brought over an aquaintance who was heavily into folk music, and, in particular, Tom Paxton. So, I decided to play him the Move's version of "The Last Thing on My Mind" (which I still think is one of the greatest rock tunes ever recorded). In the vernacular of the time, he was "blown away" - he said he had never heard such a unique and outstanding cover of a Paxton song. Naturally, I agreed! Roy Wood's arrangement and guitar work are simply amazing and perfectly complimented by Carl Wayne's evocative vocals. Why wasn't this song a top ten hit? What radio station in their right mind would play a Seven and a Half minute folk rock ballad with a Two and a Half minute double-tracked psychedelic 12 string "wah wah" solo! But it's perfect! Just listen... This WAS the 60's. Eclectic, electric,.. and in this case, Exceptional!

Appropriately released in 1970, this album is the culmination and pinnacle of the 60's Pop-Rock scene. It runs the whole gamut of influences and textures that defined popular culture of the time - folk, pop, classical, eastern, psychedelia, heavy metal. But done to perfection due to the talent and effort of Roy Wood.

Certainly not as influential as other British bands of the 60's - the Beatles, the Stones, The Who, Cream, etc. The Move came more from the Dadaist/Surrealist element of the UK music scene - akin to the Bonzo Dog Band - the "Pop Pastiche" school of British Rockers which never seemed to be able to transition into the increasingly "serious" music scene in the States during the Vietnam era. This is probably why many people in the US see this album as corny or dated. But I don't think humanity invented music because they needed something "serious" to listen to, and this album proves it. Each song on the album seems seems to have a "genre-inflation" index just shy of "Satire" while still managing to amaze with the depth of skill and excellence in production in every song. How can anyone NOT have fun listening to something like the Move's over-the-top version of the Mann/Weill composition "Don't Make My Baby Blue" - a heavy metal classic(?) as hot as roywoodium238, or "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited" with it's bouncing, vaudevillian construction segueing into Bach, Tchaikovsky, Moussorgsky, et al. "Hello Susie" as power pop on steroids and banana peels. "Fields of People" with it's anthemic "Flower Power" chorus and baroque-styled carnival barker verses ending in up in electric ragaland. Remember, in 100 years, the same weeds that are growing on my grave will be growing on yours... have some fun and check it out before you go.

"Good,.. Tune your organ and we'll roar away!"

P.S. I must agree that the sound on this Repertoire CD does not do the album justice. The extra live tracks are a nice look at a cross-section of tunes The Move covered, but the sound is murky, and I am unaware as to whether or not better versions exist.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the LP.......2006-01-31

The original vinyl LP release on A&M and Regal Zonophone is a sonic masterpiece, full of fun, heavy intricate music running the gamut from psychedilia, hard rock, pop balladry, raga and great hints of what would become Electric Light Orchestra. Unfortunately, I cannot seriously recommend this Repertoire release as the sound on the compact disc is heavily compromised, almost lifeless, and some of those live bits on Great Portland Street and in the studio have been mysteriously edited out. Better to search out the Japanese version. As for the live extras, better to save your money for the current Sanctuary label's Something Else From The Move ... Plus or wait later in the year for the upcoming Live At The Marquee which will include the long lost Fillmore West concert as well as a more complete version of the Marquee concert featuring the original quintet.

I never thought that I'd hear a trumpet player that I could put on a par with Miles Davis...of course Miles is still God, but perhaps Hakan is a major deity?

The virtuosity of the playing on these pieces is stunning. I have to admit that on first listen I didn't really like all of the pieces; some sounded to harsh and more "jazzy" than classical (not that there's anything wrong with jazzy!)

On a second listen, though, the harshness went away and the brilliance of the playing came through.

This is a must for any trumpet player or fan.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording.......2005-08-06

Having heard much of Hardenberger's piccolo work, I was pleased to see that his cornet playing is equally impressive. He nails technically demanding pieces without sacrificing his beautiful sound. Arban's Norma Variations and Hartmann's piece based on Rule Britannia are never dull, and Hardenberger is accurate and virtuosic on the more modern pieces, including the Francaix Sonatine and the fiendishly difficult Maxwell Davies sonata. Every piece is superbly played, and Pontinen provides good accompaniment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pop Rock Classic!.......2002-03-02

This is one of the top five releases of the last decade. If you like early Cheap Trick, especially Heaven Tonight, you will love this. All twelve tracks rock! Super Tuesday, Calling Sydney, RU Receiving, etc, etc. I do not exaggerate. This is one of those special records. Even the great Shazam will have a hard time beating this one. This is modern power pop at its absolute finest.

4 out of 5 stars Billy Batson would be proud!.......2001-11-29

The best post-modern powerpop album I've found. Echoes of Cheap Trick, ELO, DB's and others, but the Shazam don't merely ape these forebears - they pay homage to them with well-crafted songs. The lyrics may be a bit sloppy in places, but even this looseness is endearing. I can't stop playing it.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest CD ever made.......2001-08-21

In my country Shazam is worshipped as hero of culture. The rock sounds have the learnation and learnededness of the Zander, Roy Woods, BeatleGrup and other brilliant men. Indeed, God Speed The Shazam!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful pop.......2000-11-16

This cd is a step up from their self-titled debut(and that was pretty good). Much more guitars on this one and thats a good thing. Reminds me of the Who in parts, maybe some Cheap Trick too. While loud and proud this disc never loses touch with the melodies, and choruses. It lags a bit in the end, but the first eight songs are to die for. A must buy.

5 out of 5 stars RU Receiving The Shazam? You should be..........2000-10-05

Quite simply, an outstanding second CD (IMHO) from this band out of Tennessee. They've deservedly had strong reviews in the UK music press for this release. Much has been made of influences such as legendary bands such as The Move and Cheap Trick, but the songs on this stand up by themselves, although you can hear elements of those influences in some. Excellent "power pop" and I challenge anyone to give this a try... and then *not* keep playing it over and over! It really grows on you! Hans Rotenberry proves that he is a skilled songwriter, and he is ably supported by fine musicians. I honestly recommend this CD. Terrific band, wonderful album, BUY IT!

The Real Rock 'n Roll Deal! The time has arrived, This is primal, archetypal, balls out rock that just does not let up for one split second and whose big beats and raucous hooks will change and inspire air-guitar wrestling matches. Filled with high-energy kicks, blistering guitar flash, arena-ready anthems, unforgettable hooks and catchy fist-pumpers-this is the barn-burner and five-geared raver that fans have been waiting for, and a breathless, potent cocktail for new ones. As always, filled with highly accomplished and inspired approximations of such sounds as The Who and The Move and a host of other pantheon-chiseled rock gods, all dressed up to party with The Shazam. Not Lame. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing ...Finally.......2004-05-21

There are no need for comparisons here. The Shazam is simply 'The Shazam' - They Am What They Am. I couldn't believe what I was hearing on this album. "Tomorrow The World" is a rock 'n roll album - a real one. A great one. An amazing rock 'n' roll album by a genuine, 100% authentic rock 'n' roll band. This is one of those rare albums that will remain in your CD collection until the day you die. If the catchy, soaring melodies in "Gettin' Higher" don't grab you - then the rockin' guitar riffs of "Rockin' And Rollin' (with my) Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roller will. This album is pure rock 'n' roll spirit. Its clever enough to make a strong statement without being too serious. Its powerful enough to make you feel like the songs sound. Its inspiring enough to reignite your rock 'n' roll dreams and keep them alive. This album is a 'hit' - not because its on top of the charts - but because it has everything that all great rock 'n' roll albums have that make you want to know everything there is to know about the band, buy their t-shirts and posters, read all the linear notes and every lyric...this is the kind of music that makes people care about music. This is the music that means something to people. Buy this album. Don't wait around for J-Lo or Justin Timberlake to endorse it. These days you have to seek out great music. If you are lucky enough to discover "Tomorrow The World" then you'll find great music. This is one of the greatest, most underrated rock 'n' roll albums I've ever heard. Buy it, Listen, Love It, And "Squeeze The Day."

5 out of 5 stars Record Of The Year.......2003-02-06

I concur with previous descriptions. An astounding record, filled with big hooks, big heart, and passion. Shazam take their cues from the Who and the Move as much from the Cars and the Plimsouls. "Squeeze The Day" stands out even among this collection--one of those rare, elegiac rockers that remind us of the fleetingness of life. Reminded me of XTC. But enough comparisons. Get the record.

Album Description

If you like Shazam's 1999 release 'Godspeed the Shazam' this amazing 7 song CD of utter brilliance will be of no surprise to you. Taking it's inspiration from The Beatle's 'White Album', the songs here reveal the band and songwriter Hans Rotenberry to be rock's great white hope to break down the walls of resistance built by the teen-pop crapola of the last few years. Standard jewel case. 2000 release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!.......2002-10-30

A fine little stop-gap release that grows on you as you delve into it. Hans Rotenberry is the writer of many fine tunes and here are six of his coolest compositions as well as a well thought out reworking of the Beatles' musique concrete piece Revolution 9. Of course, anyone who digs guitar-based rock should get their other CD's, 1997's eponymous debut and their masterpiece, 1999's Godspeed the Shazam. Look for their new release TOMORROW THE WORLD, which hits the streets in the fall of 2002. It too, is BRILLIANT.

3 out of 5 stars It's no Godspeed.......2002-05-01

This EP is O.K., but includes some filler tracks, including the cut and paste, failed experiment of a title track. The original tracks are decent, but not really worth the price of admission. If you're new to The Shazam, you must check out their prior release Godspeed The Shazam, just possibly one of the top five to ten power pop albums of all-time! I kid you not. If you happen upon The Shazam live, bring your ear plugs! They played a ridiculously loud, distorted mix of new material, as well as a few classics from Godspeed, at a recent show in Chicago. I'll stick with the studio version of The Shazam.

Forget the pathetic editorial review of this record (featuring more typos than a third grade book report), and everything you've heard about The Shazam. Start all over with them with their first album. Before they became the glorious rock band that they are today, they were one of the world's greatest powerpop bands smashing out some of the best, most upbeat two-minute-thirty-second songs ever written. With melodies that are instant classics and the wittiest lyrics this side of 1972, you'll find the Cheap Trick-ish guitars and Keith Moon-styled drums irresistable. Get producer Brad Jones to stir in a healthy dose of The Move and you have the closest thing to a powerpop masterpiece that was released in 1997. The 2001 reissue added a handful of '97-era bonus tracks, including what should have been a hit single in the UK, "Everything" and the crowd favorite "I hate that song". Buy it now, enjoy it forever, and jump on the nearest mattress to your heart's content.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Arguably the best pop/rock album of all time.......2005-03-23

I got the LP version of this marvelous album many years ago, and was hooked right from the killer opening riff of the pre-punk power pop "Hello Susie" to what is perhaps the best ensemble guitar break ever recorded in rock on "The Last Thing On My Mind."

Each song is in a different style than any of the others, and all are exceptional. Not a moment on this album that is short of brilliant. Who else would do a HEAVY cabaret song ("Don't Make My Baby Blue"), or segue a tongue-in-cheek pop song ("Cherry Blssom Clinic") into one of the finest, totally non-cheesy rock arrangements of a classical song ever recorded?

Superbly produced, too, with crisp, chiming guitars, drums that sound like you're right there, distinct bass (as on all Move records), and clear, upfront vocals, all mixed very stereophonically. If only records made 35 years later can sound this "alive" and good. A great candidate for a SACD release.

Witty, rocking, catchy, fun, thoughtful, moving. Damn right it beats the "chart toppers."

5 out of 5 stars It's my music!.......2004-10-14

I'm amazed to find that no one has reviewed this sensational disk yet! Truthfully, I almost wish they hadn't put so many extras on it since it diminishes the experience of the original LP, but their fine on their own. But do me a favor, first time you play it, just play the first six tracks.

Personally, I think Shazam is in competition to be the best British rock album released in the sixties. I'm sure some of you will be offended by that statement, but listen to those six songs in one sitting and tell me you're not impressed. Great music, great vocals, great songs, and a primo psychedelic experience.

We start off with a hard rocker, Hello Suzie, and fade into a classic Move ballad, Beautiful Daughter. As the haunting notes of Beautiful Daughter fade away, we hear the footsteps taking us to the neoclassical, brain-spinning Cherry Blossom Clinic. No time to rest after it's orgastic climax, it's onto the Eastern sounds of Fields of People. Then it's back to their early rock roots with the angst-driven Don't Make My Baby Blue. The sequence is topped off with the best version of Tom Paxton's The Last Thing on My Mind ever recorded. Once you've heard it, I defy your mind to think of anything else for the next week.

If you're already a Move fan you know what I say is true. If you've stumbled here by accident, have I'll envy you when you hear this audio masterpiece for the first time.
