Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels great and small argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults--a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady." Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter-egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively; the stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters; and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks.

Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that many of the rarities here have already been repurposed by shrewd mixers, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form. A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mm-hmm! I can smell that funky music!.......2007-06-18

Rare indeed; I can't imagine where you would find original 45s or even LPs containing all of these songs. That would be one lifetime task. The good folks at Rhino Records with their remarkable and creative tastes took out all of that hassle for us and now offers a rather unique set of rare funky music from the vaults of Atlantic/Atco and Warner/Reprise dating 1967-1977 with 91 tracks spanning across 4 filled-to-the-brim discs. Any soul music fan will no doubt want to explore this area of the R&B category (funk and I mean pure funk), but at times the flow of the music could seem a bit too much to handle. Some of the cuts go more than 3 1/2 minutes and sound like they might not end any time soon. The other case would be some tracks sound bizarre or unusual in terms of sound due to instrumentation, arrangements, etc. Such "bizarre" tracks are the sitar-laced rendition of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Steppin' Stones" with a crazed flautist leading the way on a very blazing and dizzy-sounding track. The good outweigh the not-so-good remarkably, though. So get ready to hear punchy horns, infectious, simplistic and driving drumbeats, super funky bass lines, crunchy guitars, oozing organs and ultra-soulful vocals. On disc one, some noteworthy tracks are "Spreadin' Honey", "Get Otta My Life Woman", "Snatchin' It Back", "Sexy Coffee Pot" and "Help Me Make Up My Mind" (an answer to "Can I Chane My Mind"). Be sure to check out "Sookie Sookie", "Feelin' Alright" (done by Lulu (To Sir With Love)!), and "Engine Number Nine" on disc two, "Face It" (love the female backup singers on this), "Wah Wah Man", an alternate extended mix of "Rock Steady", "Suavecito", and "Nuki Suki" (from Little Richard) on disc three as well as "Moon Shadow", "Kissing My Love", "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky", "Chug Chug-A-Lug", "Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away", and "Chicken Heads" on disc four. Those were just some of my favorite tracks, so I may have missed some. Many are instrumentals, but there are a handful with vocalists singing about love, dancing, partying, social concerns, etc. Bottom line: worth checking out and worth the discovery. You definitely won't hear this stuff on commercial radio. Only about three or four songs you'll recognize; the rest is like a surprise. If you're into R&B and want to explore the funk side of it, you can't find a better pick, and about 90% of these songs aren't available (some or many) together anyplace else. The real deal of funk; that is "what it is!"

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IT IS ?.....NOTHING BUT A NON STOP PARTY! .......2007-02-10

This set right here could very well be the holy grail of rare and hard to find grooves. This box set is funkier than a high school locker room! Every track on here is certified stank(aka funky). The most amazing thing about these tracks is that they capture the spirit of the times better than a lot of their more popular comtemporaries(at least in my opinion). "What it is" feels like an audio documentary of underdogs making the funkiest music and having a great time doing it. If you listen to how these tracks are sequenced, you'll feel like a story is being told - rather than just listening to another compliamation of vintage r&b music.

I'm only 25 years old. Every time I play this set, I feel like I'm at a 70's block party, chillin' in a long black cadillac fleetwood and scoping out some foxy mamas with hot pants and thigh high leather boots
(that's how good the music sounds). With 20 plus tracks each per disc, you can't help but be amazed with the consistent quality of the music.

All I gotta say is buy this set and let the funk be your guide to love, happiness, and your rites of passage to throw it on down and dance your
a-- off!!! If you ain't diggin on this, you're diggin a hole for yourself!

Long live the funk baby!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Mind blowing. Worth every penny. And so on........2007-02-04

This is the real deal folks. Music with grit and soul and feeling, before the shining distraction of drum machines, computers, samplers, bling, and "MTV's Cribs". I saw an ad for this and went to several book and record stores such as Borders, and to my local hip indie CD store (headquarters to the local music scene circle-jerk), trying to describe it to various clerks. Which was about like trying to teach a card trick to a basset hound. Save yourself the agony of trying to interest a white twenty-something body-piercing pincushion in ordering this set for you, and just get it here. You'll be glad you did. The sheer quantity of great music on this is staggering. I love the mix of instruments with vocal tracks, and the mix of "name" artists like Aretha or The Meters with many very obscure ones. Whoever compiled this did a great job in selecting the track order, so it makes it perfect for a long party. Everyone will be getting up and shaking their groove thang. This is priceless music from a lost era, so grab it before it disappears again.

4 out of 5 stars Never a dull moment.......2007-01-28

I am a funk fan who is still by all means learning...With the passing of James Brown recently, I have tried to speed up this process a little and take as much in as possible. I think this collection of "underground" funk is phenomenal, 4 discs and never a dull moment.

4 out of 5 stars Soul-tastic... All Hail Rhino! Nobody knows box like Rhino knows box.......2007-01-14

I stumbled over this set just a few days ago, and I have to say that it's easily one of the top 10 best random-artist compilations I've ever heard in my life, and I own hundreds of them.

I won't say there's no filler--by filler I mean the cover tunes--and I'm confused as to why "What So Never The Dance" is credited to the Houseguests when this is a longtime Bootsy Collins track? What, is Bootsy in trouble with Warner Brothers and can't re-release his own stuff under his own name anymore?

But disc one is an absolute gem--you can't make your own mix better than they've done it here. If you're a fan of James Brown, Parliament, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, the aforementioned Bootsy, Tower Of Power, Prince, early Stevie Wonder, Motown, Isaac Hayes, then you shouldn't be without this set.

Absolutely worth buying.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Jill Scott's debut, Who Is Jill Scott?, is a luscious portrait of the artist as a grown woman. In R&B, black femininity has often been reduced to two dimensions: sex and materialism. But Scott lives in 3-D, and it shows in her voluptuous songwriting. She combines a beautiful voice with an extreme generosity of spirit, making her music a dreamy, soulful delight. Lizz Mendez Berry

Amazon.com

Jill Scott is the singer-songwriter who wrote the unforgettable hook on the Roots' "You Got Me." Jill Scott is a better singer than the garble-mouthed Erykah Badu, who mangled those lines (albeit prettily) on the Roots' single. If Scott had sung them (which she does, and marvelously so, on the group's live album, The Roots Come Alive), we would have known what the hell the words were. Thankfully, Jill Scott has put out her own album, which exceeds all hook-derived expectations. She is, in fact, a wonder--a magically soulful tunesmith who writes tunes like "The Way" and "Watching Me" that feel as comfortable, warm, and sexy as Al Green on a cold day. And then she rips into the songs' haunting melodies with a gorgeous honey-crisp alto that'll leave you wanting more. --Sylvia W. Chan

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. 1.......2007-07-21

I agree with previous posters that it's hard to expound further on this cd when others have so eloquently written their reviews of it but I love the artist and the cd so much that I'm going to add my two cents...

This is a disc that still gets constant play in my house, in the car & at work! There was such a huge buzz on Jill Scott prior to the release of her debut that I could not wait to get my hands on it. Every song & interlude just flows so magically into the track making this not only one of the best debuts by any artist but also one of the best "neo-soul" albums ever produced so those who still don't know who Jill Scott is but enjoy good music will not be sorry in adding this disc to their collection.

My fave tracks to this day are: THE WAY, I THINK IT'S BETTER, WATCHING ME, ONE IS THE MAGIC #, HE LOVES ME, IT'S LOVE & HONEY MOLASSES. Another honorable mention goes to LOVE RAIN (although I like this version very much, I adore how she switched it up on her live cd).

5 out of 5 stars If you didnt know...........2007-07-09

Jill Scott is a genius. Her voice is earthy, soft, powerful, flawless....mixed in with her poetic flair...this album is sexy, inspirational, and just somthing to sit back and groove to. Its mainly for mature listeners, but few young fans like myself can appreciate Jill Scott's many talents. Her music inspires your mind and turns you on, with her romantic and sexy poetry. She's the first of ther kind, with many artists following her pathway. Im not sure if she won grammy's for one but its Grammy worthy. I have all her albums and this is by far my favorite one.

5 out of 5 stars jill scott.......2007-06-30

her album is a story. each song takes you on a journey. not a lot of artist can do that.

5 out of 5 stars Jill Scott is Neo-Soul.......2007-06-27

I LOVE HER! LOVE HER! LOVE HER! This is the first cd that I played so much it started to skip. I enjoy how her similies for love, being a poet her melodic tunes and metaphorical stanzas profoundly inspire me. Buy "Jill Scott" cds and any cd she collaborates.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

5 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-07-15

This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I saw her play in person, and Live is much, much better then the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22

I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.

5 out of 5 stars relaxation.......2007-05-13

This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-07

Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.

5 out of 5 stars Talented violinist.......2007-03-29

When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

Album Description

KEYSHIA COLE is the real deal. Like many young people raised in tough neighborhoods, the 21-year-old songstress endured a tumultuous childhood in Oakland, California, and has fought all her life to keep her dream of a music career alive. Now she's realizing that dream on her own terms with her first album for the A&M label, The Way It Is. It's been a long road for Keyshia, but it's her powerful voice - a bell-like instrument whose soaring clarity is topped off with a tantalizing touch of soulful grit - that's carried her through, not to mention the diminutive singer's personal combination of sugar, spice, sass and sex appeal, along with a solid-steel spine. With production by Kanye West, Krucial Keys, Ron Fair and Chink Santana, Keyshia's dreams have been realized.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Gray starts from a solid foundation of retro funk and soul and builds on it by adding hip-hop signifiers and modern studio techniques. The result is one of the better debuts of the year, thanks to Gray's blunt proclamations ("I've committed murder... and I don't feel bad about it") and inimitable vocal phrasing. On How Life Is offers the sass of a '20s blueswoman plus the don't-mess-with-me strength of a 21st-century R&B icon-in-the-making. --Keith Moerer

Amazon.com

Macy Gray's debut draws heavily on '70s funk traditions to make its progressive-R&B points. With help from a band including former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Arik Marshall, she uses her raw yet controlled voice to celebrate sex ("Sexomatic," "Caligula"), God ("I Can't Wait to Meetchu"), and injustice ("I've Committed Murder"). Gray's songwriting doesn't seem fully developed yet, but On How Life Is is a striking first shot nonetheless. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars One word: unique.......2006-05-08

Macy Gray literally hit the charts in 2000 completely out of nowhere. Her unique sound and listenable R&B singles like "I Try" caught the music industry completely out of left field, and Gray herself achieved numerous nominations and awards at many award shows, and deservedly so. Though she isn't the best singer by any means, her style is consistent and deliciously unique. "I Try" is, of course, the standout track on her debut album On How Life Is, and it remains to be her biggest hit. The remaining songs on her record follow suit: from the revenge-driven "I've Committed Murder" to the soul-induced "Do Something," On How Life Is remains a debut album from an individualistic singer-songwriter that is both completely original and completely irresistible.

1 out of 5 stars What The %#&@ Is This??!.......2005-11-22

How long of a career do you think this funk diva will have, eh? I give her at the most, say, five years before she completely shreds her raspy sandpaper-on-broken glass voice. Will I celebrate? YES. Oh, to be rid of this monstrosity of a singer! Anyone who buys ANYTHING by Macy Gray does not deserve eardrums, because this ain't music, it's pure torture. What a waste of Vinyl Chloride!!! Excuse me, I just had to clear my throat. Heh-heh-eh-hack-hack!!

You don't expect a Broadway star to be slow burning and funky (Ben Vereen notwithstanding), but Heather Headley is both. Best known for her stage roles in The Lion King and Aida--the latter won her a Tony--the Trinidad native is used to arch performance. Yet her debut album focuses on smooth, lean R&B grooves and Headley's honeyed voice. Heartbreak is Headley's ace. "I Wish I Wasn't" is a tortured missive dispatched from an empty home. "Always Been Your Girl"--the set's hands-down centerpiece--finds Headley pleading with a longtime friend to consider her in a different light. It's a staggeringly powerful song--the kind you can imagine Headley belting out beneath a stark spotlight--made all the more stunning by the fact that the whole collection isn't tied to that one emotion. Also here are the breezy, Mars-Venus meditation "Nature of a Man" and the near-tribal thump of "Like Ya Used To." There are producers and guests aplenty, but Headley is, as always, the star of the show. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Heather Rocks!!.......2007-01-07

Discovered this artist a few years back through one of those recommendation links and I have been hooked on her music ever since. Thought this album was the best thing to hit the airwaves in forever. . until I discovered her second album! She is amazing! Both of her albums are incredible, soulful, beautiful and rank right up there with the likes of Mary J. Blige and Christina Aguilera. This CD is great, but her second CD RULES!! Get them both, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs ever made.......2006-12-27

I love, love, love this cd. I've already had to replace it twice due to overplaying. (Guess I should just break down and get one of those MP3 Players)!

For me, this is a musical masterpiece. Heather's voice is a divine gift that floats the listener into some parallel universe for the length of the cd. I totally "feel" her and would recommend this to anyone looking for darn good R&B, Pop, Lounge-y sounds.

I love Heather Headleys voice. this cd is great from begining to end...

2 out of 5 stars Her album is all singles.......2006-06-18

I wish I wasn't is her only good song on this album. He is isn't even that good of a song. It's okay. The rest of the album sucks. This is an example of an album where an artist puts out a good single knowing they could suck you into it.I wouldn't reccommend this album to anyone, unless they just want it for the singles. And for that, you could download the songs for 99 cents ea. on the internet.Overall, it's a bad album. There's nothing more to really say about it.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD!.......2006-06-05

I bought Heather's Cd when the song "He Is" came out. I immediately claimed it as my favorite. For several weeks, it was all I listened to. I can relate to the lyrics on "I wish I wasn't" and several others. You go Heather! Keep on doing what you're doing.

Junking '70s-funk cliches for a stripped-down sound (keyboards and synthesizers replaced the horns) built around a hard-rockin' guitar and a tougher-than-tough rhythm section--all topped off with a heapin' helping of humor--this Minneapolis-based sextet was once the best funk band in the land. This second LP is the best single album from the act, which soon imploded, owing to an over-abundance of talent. Bug-eyed vocalist Morris Day and guitarist Jesse Johnson went on to semi-successful solo careers; keyboardist Jimmy Jam and bassist Terry Lewis became a mega-platinum writing/production team (Janet Jackson, most notably); drummer extraordinaire Jellybean Johnson and keyboardist Monte Moir were the other members. Co-produced by Day and Jamie Starr (a.k.a. Prince), this six-song 1982 effort sports three wall-rattling party-starters: the self-explantory "Wild and Loose," the tongue-in-cheek dance tune "The Walk," and the still-percolating, knotty-but-nice rhythms of "777-9311." Toss in a "New Wave"-style rocker, a droll take on the obligatory love-man ballad, and the band's straight-faced answer to the titular question ("Time to fix your clock!") is O-B-V-I-O-U-S. --Don Waller

I THINK THAT THIS IS THEIR BEST ALBUM, BUT YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THE TIME.

4 out of 5 stars Chilli Sauce!!!.......2007-04-12

Ok...we all know that Prince, the genius that he is ,is responsible for all the music , backup vocals, instruments etc...but if we can look beyond that...this is just one big sexy party album. I agree that "Gigolos Get Lonely Too" is just begging to be re-made!!! (i think J.T. would be cool wit it) 777-9311 show cased just how Cool Morris Day was. It may have been Prince Behind the scenes but Morris was the only choice to make for the front man 4 the Time. This era in music did more than influence what we listened to but also how we dressed and talked! it was cool...Yayyess!!! Memories of sliding sideways in Stacey Adams at the Prom Yelling "Chilli Sauce"

money well spent if you like the old school beats.

5 out of 5 stars Somebody Bring Me A Mirror !.......2006-11-19

The Time without a doubt is one of the funkiest R&B groups to come out of Minnesota and the best side project Prince ever had a hand in. At only six tracks the disc can easily go toe-toe with most R&B discs released today. The huge hit 777-9311 is guaranteed to get an old school party started as is the self-explanatory dance song The Walk. Going with more epic jam-orientated songs through out the entire disc the group does plenty of partying. Fiannly Morris Day even manages to offer a respectable ballad with "Gigolos Get Lonely Too" which is just itching to be remade. The Time may not have been the most soulful band to come out of Minnesota that titles goes to Mint Condition but they sure are the funkiest.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-09-25

this era of Prince was his best to me in terms of the sounds&vibe he was creating through the time. none of these songs are particular memorable, but the instrumentation is still remembered. the Bass Solo on "777-9311" along with the Drum programming that Prince was coming up with was tight. "the Walk" was cool. we will never know just how god the time truly could have been because prince was worried about them big time. The Time showcased themselves more on Stage, than on Record. Time Records were mainly Prince,Dez Dickerson,&Morris Day& some other minor contributions here&there. 1982 to me was the last time Prince had his sound together.he was in the Groove back at that time.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars 4-1/2 stars -- Black-and-blue-eyed soul.......2007-07-18

It might be a little late to be just reviewing Leela James' album, but as they say, better late then never. I was first introduced to Ms. James as a VH1 You Oughta Know (or was it still Inside Track back then?) artist, and after listening to A Change Is Gonna Come, I'm sure glad I was.

Even though the subject matter of "Music" is starting to get played out, I don't understand why most of the reviewers don't seem to like that song. But it IS true that the rest of the songs are a lot better than that. "Good Time" and "Rain" are just plain funky, while "Soul Food" is very satisfying. And if you think you'll already know what "Mistreating Me" is about, just listen to the song and you'll find some very interesting lyrics. Kanye West also drops in to produce two back-to-back gems that compliment each other: "It's Alright" and "Didn't I".

I don't know if I'll do like another reviewer and put Leela in the same league as Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin (although she does a damn good job with her rendition of Sam Cooke's title track); speaking of remakes, her cover of No Doubt's "Don't Speak" is also quality. But that leads me to another point. As reviewer E. Sims says, Leela's singing voice sounds a little too much like Joss Stone's, and the thing about that is, well, not to be cruel, but it's like this: when a white artist sings "black" music in a soulful voice, it's invigorating. When it's the other way around, it's a little odd. In other words, Leela sounds like a white person singing like a black person, which might not sit right with everyone.

But that doesn't really bother me, and it's also not the reason why I knocked half a star off my rating; the reason IS because the Wyclef-assisted "Ghetto" completely throws everything off. But A Change Is Gonna Come still proves that Leela James deserves much more attention than she's getting, so help her get some by picking this up.

Anthony Rupert

4 out of 5 stars Ms. Leela.......2007-07-09

This CD represents a return to soul music for me. Leela's raw talent and the talent of the band did it for me. I'm hooked!!

Fantastic music. Will cause you to not only tap your foot, snap your fingers, wiggle your behind, but also fling your entire body onto the dance floor with abandon. Every time I hear it again, I'm amazed and grateful such talent is recorded for us to share.

5 out of 5 stars Soul found its resting place in Leela James THROAT!!!.......2007-06-13

Every few years or so..you got some talent that just has this WOW factor..and as I read the comments on Leela James and how her CD falls short is absolutely crazy. Its a beautiful story on how she yearns for good music to flow through into your ears and in your brain and appreciate soulful music. You are suppose to hear the anger, sadness, and joy of good music. That is travel she wants to take you on. She has a voice that is like no other. How dare anybody up here say she sounds like Joss Stone..it is the other way around..Get it correct. The CD is awesome. She has a voice built especially for live sessions..so if you have the opportunity to see her...do it. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Speechless.........2007-01-28

This cd is highly recommended for deep down soulful music lovers! I love this cd! Leela James has a voice that makes chills go through your body. Her cd touches on love, broken hearts, soul food, relationships...I loved it!

HIGHLY recommended!

For music lovers that give this cd anything below a 5..you don't appreciate GOOD music!

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This is a great album, from the first track to the last. Kelly Price is supremely talented, and I wish I'd known about it when it came out last year. She is one of the few artists whose albums I will buy before hearing a single track - just off of the strength of her previous material. Keep the good music coming, Kelly!

3 out of 5 stars mixed review.......2007-06-08

I recently purchased Kelly Price's latest album, This is Who I am. I would like to share some of my thoughts regarding this CD. Let me preface this my saying Kelly has a superior voice and that is why I purchased the CD. She is incredibly uplifting; however, the duets on the CD ruined my listening experience.

The portions of the duet ballads where she sang were great and those portions that were sung by other people were subpar. For example, I LOVE that song "God is not dead" up until the point Joe Ligon sings. Maybe it's my taste but I did not care for his voice or Vanessa Bell Armstrong's. I bought the CD to hear Kelly...not these other vocalists. Their voices were much more old fashion than kelly's. As a listener and fan, I would recommend that Kelly do all the singing herself unless she has the opportunity to work with singers like Whitney, Aretha
or other people of their caliber.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-05-07

We all know that this girl can SING!!! let's say that up front, however I did not like this CD. I think I was expecting a more traditional sound from her. With the exception of Healing, I did not like any of the songs on the cd.
