Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15
This CD is fun and action packed as much as you could hope for in a CD. He uses quotes from many famous folk and classical songs and implements them into his own compositions with a bit of a twist. For example, in Classical rap, where he raps about being the best rapper in the world with terrific brass interludes between the verses. The orchestra plays a clip from Vivaldi's "Spring" and then he twists it into a record "wicky-wicky" to the same tune. He introduces every peice before it is played in a hilarious manner in which he talks about the peice and something else that was going on in the composers mind as he wrote the peice. Starting at the begining-
This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.
1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.
Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.
The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.
What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

Amazing voice, mediocre material - Denetria deserves better!.......2007-03-21
Let me start by saying I've been a fan of Denetria LONG before she put out this "debut" gospel CD - actually, Denetria was a session singer for several house/club tracks, including the stunning garage house anthem "I'VE HAD ENOUGH" written and produced by the legendary FRANKIE KNUCKLES way back in the mid-90s (!) and then she sang many underground house hits under the psuedonym CHANCE with the SUNKIDS ("RESCUE ME" "RISE UP"), so when Denetria FINALLY drops her debut full-length CD literally years later, I was really expecting and hoping something truly wonderful...well, yes & no. While her VOICE retains its lung-busting power (really, the other review who slagged her off as a Aretha wannabe was unfair, for Denetria possesses a singular vocal gift - yes, she sounds remarkably like a young Aretha, but has her own edge), the SONGS on this album aren't strong enough to stand up to her powerful vocals. Aside from a couple songs, you just want Denetria to let loose, and it never quite happens. Maybe next time? Personally, I think Denetria should ditch the hardcore gospel approach and do a more gospel/soul/dance hybrid, much like TRAMAINE achieved in the 80s with "FALL DOWN" etc - then we'd see the REAL Denetria come out in full force! Still, she's a talent worth watching.
Awesome!!.......2007-01-20
I met Sis Champ in Colorado Springs, CO for the MLK birthday celebration services. She truly is an anointed women of God and was singing like that in this higgggh altiude. She was a blessing and I bought a sign CD from her. LOVE IT :-)!!!!
E
There Is Only ONE Aretha..........2006-10-22
Every since Aretha Franklin was annoited the Queen of Soul, thousands of wonderful singers have been hailed by music writers as "the new Aretha!" Why do they do that? Aretha EARNED her title and it's her's, just as Dinah Washington, who died in 1963, is STILL the Undisputed Queen of the Blues and Bessie Smith, who died in the 1930's, still is Empress of the Blues, Aretha will forever hold her title.
Perhaps it's because so much was made of Aretha's success and her being introduced as "...ladies and gentlemen, the Queen of Soul, Miss Aretha Franklin..." that people are so fascinated by her.
Let's face it, DeNetria Champ, is ONE of tens of THOUSANDS of black women who can sing their butts off in the United States. Just go to any black Baptist church in any state and you'll hear them sing their faces off! The talent pool isn't near empty - these ladies, the majority of them, will never be heard outside their churches, nor will the thousands of men who can sing just as well.
In this age of mediocrity, we have to settle for the hip/hop crowd, who know NOTHING about singing and the young people who are buying their records know NOTHING about music OR their culture.
I wish DeNetria Champ and all the rest of the truly talented singers all the luck in the world, but earn your OWN title and keep your eyes off Aretha's. SHE GOT HER'S THE HARD WAY: SHE EARNED IT.
Thank you Oprah!!.......2006-06-23
I was so moved by Oprah's Legends Ball Special - it was great to see O acknowledging these great women of color!! An added benefit for me was discovering DeNetria Champ who I saw for the first time on the Legend Special - oh my goodness, what talent!!!
Oprah seems to have a knack for discovering great talent before everyone else and after seeing her brief performance on TV, I did a search and bought her CD - excellent, excellent, excellent!!! I am looking for big things from DeNetria Champ - a voice like hers doesn't come along very often!
Oprah Winfrey loves DeNetria Champ!.......2006-05-30
Just tuned in to see DeNetria Champ on Oprah Winfrey's Legends Awards - what an awesome talent!! I see why Oprah Winfrey loves Denetria Champ!

Boy George's musical-theater debut has been unfairly maligned. Set in the glamorously decadent London nightlife of the early 1980s, the show is unquestionably hampered by a weak book. But Boy George's original score (which is credited to his actual birth name of George O'Dowd) boasts several strong pop songs and generously spread-out tour-de-force numbers among a handful of performers. The plot follows the rise to fame of Boy George (impeccably channeled by Euan Morton) and his interaction with lovers and hangers-on, friends and foes. One of the most striking characters is Australian-born performance artist Leigh Bowery, confusingly played by Boy George and Matt Lucas, who took turns during the London run and who both appear on this cast album (George sings "Everything Taboo," for instance, but Lucas gets the striking, Cabaret-like "Ich Bin Kunst"). Confused yet? Well, that's Taboofor you. But never mind the plot: There's plenty of cool, theatrical tunes on this CD, which is more than you can say about most contemporary shows. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Jolly Good!.......2006-06-16
Boy George may be to blame for the failure of his musical in the United States, though he would rather fault Rosie O'Donnell. Still, critics praised him for his lyrical skills here. There are catchy songs with various gay themes here. I enjoyed it though I've never seen the musical. I think musical fanatics will appreciate having this piece in their collection.
Bravo Boy George!.......2004-05-26
Don't hate me, but I saw the Broadway production five times including closing night. I'm still unclear why this tremendous production did not catch on, it was truly amazing. It's the first time that I've seen a Broadway show more than once. I received my Broadway CD today, as I ordered it the day after the show closed - I understand that it will be available in July, 2004, hopefully sooner in time for the Tonys. The soundtrack CD is absolutely brilliant, completely capturing the fire and energy of the live production. My favorites from the show are still my favorites here, especially Euan Morton's haunting Stranger In This World and his beautiful Pretty Lies; Liz McCartney's unbelievable take on Talk Amongst Yourselves; Guttersnipe (so funny and cute live); I See Through You; Raul Esparza's heartbreaking Petrified plus the opener Freak; Out Of Fashion and the finale, Come In From The Outside. My fingers are crossed that the Tony's are generous to this show and hope Rosie O'Donnell keeps her promise for a return for this show! Get a copy, you won't regret it, even if you are not a Boy George fan, his lyrics and beautiful melodies are his best ever - everything here is eons above so many Broadway shows that run for years. I guess I'll just keep wondering why mass audiences didn't get it, although the show did receive a standing ovation every performance.
holy crapper!.......2004-05-18
well first off, being a huge boy george fan... i was interested in his musical... i bought this cd... and i must admit most of the songs are written well and are catchy.... the most touching song is STRANGER IN THIS WORLD... euan morton's voice is soothing and the lyrics are sad and beautiful... and i recommend this album to all boy fans... although this is the london recording.... (as i patiently wait for the broadway score)... this album is good.... although george only sings on one song its still being rotated in my stereo.... get this album now....
A Very Pleasant Surprise.......2004-04-23
I did not see the Broadway Musical, but I am curious why it failed. I bought the cd just out of curiosity and absolutely love it. The songs are witty and the ballads are especially beautiful. I would highly recommend this cd.
No words to describe this.......2004-04-12
My review is going to be short and i'll get right to the point. Buy the soundtrack. The singers are beyond anything you've ever heard before. Euan Morton, be still my heart. His voice is mesmerizing. The song STRANGER IN THIS WORLD will leave you breathless. Just listen to it and you'll be transfixed, I know I was and am everytime.

Hot Club Mixes--Manilow on Fire!.......2007-04-30
OK. Only 2 songs, 2 versions of each: "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and "Could it Be Magic," BUT, I absolutely LOVE them! They are super and extended versions. They are soooo HOT! I mean, I was driving and had to pull over and get out the fire extinguisher!!! (No. Not for the engine. For ME!)
Alright. Maybe I exagerated a wee bit, but they really are 4 great tracks. I downloaded the CD this morning to my Gizmo (MP3 or whatever it's called) and danced all over the kitchen. It was like an aerobic workout. I blasted it in the car later, on the way to a friend's jewelry party and it just ROCKED as I blew down the interstate. Then I used it about 6 pm when I did my power walk. (Down 57 lbs!) Was great for all 3 occassions.
Most people would probably not like it because it's only 2 songs, but for me it's heaven. Track 3 is 4:48 minutes. This first version of "Could it Be Magic" is also on one of my other Manilow CDs. It's an upbeat version. It's on "Manilow Greatest Hits--The Platinum Collection" album. That's the album with the 8 fast songs/"The Beat" first, then lists "The Ballads" second. (Great album--19 songs) The 2nd version, track 4 (7:28 minutes) of "Could it Be Magic" is more Club-Mix. It's hot and heavy, but they are both great!
By the process of elimination, that means that tracks 1 and 2 are "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight". Track 2 is 11:09 minutes long and is hot as Hades (Hades is Hell, if you didn't know it)! Track 1 is 9:31 minutes long and is even hotter! Both are club-mixes. I could dance to this album all night long without keeling over. Total time on CD is a hair over 32 minutes, 32:16 actually.
I love Manilow music; I love a heavy club beat; and I love these 2 songs--and that's what this album is. And I got it "Dirt Cheap." Personally, I love the longer versions, too. (I KNOW I'll be hearing this CD in my sleep tonight. I've been playing it all day!)
If I was Barry, I'd release these versions on future CDs, mixed in with other songs.
And, to those of you who thought that Manilow could only do elevator music---P-t-t-t-h!

Kiri Proves she can "crossover".......2004-08-08
In "Heart to Heart" Kiri definitely proves that she can sing almost anything she chooses to. My personal favorite on this
one is probably "He Was Beautiful." I have had a very hard time
obtaining copies of this CD due to it being out of print. My
mother's friends all want copies since all the songs are basically love songs. Some say Malcolm was a poor choice for a
duet partner, however without him the lovely title song would never have been written or sung. That would have been a real loss because it tends to be a favorite. He wrote it for Kiri
as a part of their work together. So, I think if he had any weaknesses he made up for them by writing that song. It's a shame it isn't a choice people can listen to on this site. Actually, after writing this I went back and listened to the selections. They are all scrambled, so that the 1st one is Heart to Heart which isn't even on the possible list of songs to preview!! Overall, a lovely CD of beautiful and familiar songs sung very
well.
Wonderful Cross-over.......2001-08-28
Granted, this is not the best example of pop-style music. However, if you appreciate terrific singing and can't stand the yelling that pop is overwhelmed with, but still like the standard pop music, this is a great album. Kiri, while not the best interpreter, does a fine job with the music. She manages to cut out the operatic sound and deliver a decent pop sound, while still maitaining an integrity in her singing. The music is somewhat dated by now, but who cares? Definitely one to add to the Kiri collection.
Romantic 'popular' songs by Kiri, particularly for women.......1999-04-18
Kiri's voice is so remarkable she can even sing 'country' (Pieces of April). Her timing and expression of a David Foster song (The Best of Me) would compete with Celine Dion anytime. The only weakness in the album (and it is considerable) is with her collaborator, Malcolm McNeill. However popular he may be 'at home', his voice is so overshadowed by hers that it is difficult to listen to them together. Fortunately, she does many 'solo', so the album is still great, especially if a 'remote' is handy. Unfortunately, it seems to be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain this CD now, so Kiri as a 'pop' singer will likely leave that stage to Celine or Barbra. I loved it though, so covet my rare copy.

A Wonderful Performance.......2007-03-31
This is an an authentic, accessible, entertaining, and deeply satisfying performance. Although I like all of the principal singers, my two favorite are Clive Revill as Ko-Ko and Jean Allister as Katisha. For me, the key to a successful Gilbert and Sullivan performance is that it is not only funny, but also touching. In my opinion, Revill and Allister score high in both departments. In their final scene together, they are both vulnerable and hilarious at the same time. One small detail about this recording that bothers me slightly is that the overture has been rewritten. It is a nice medley, but I miss the original. I understand that Sullivan did not write it, but it is based on his tunes and I've always liked it. But don't let that stop you from getting this recording. I consider it to be the best Mikado on record.
ARTICULATE MIKADO.......2007-01-31
Articulate - both in diction and in musical interpretation - this re-release of the 1960's Sadlers Wells recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's MIKADO is quite delightful. The care and loving detail, which were the keystones of SWO's productions of G & S and operettas in the 1960s onstage, are preserved here in Alexander Faris's splendidly gutsy interpretation of the most popular of all the Savoy Operas; if his speeds are at times too leisurely, all can be forgiven just to hear the superb soloists; the expert diction of Denis Dowling as Pooh-Bah; the heroic tones of John Wakefield as the Wandering Minstrel; Marion Studholme singing the best "Sun Whose Rays" you will ever here on disc; Jean Allister as a correctly dominating Katisha, (hurray - a real contralto!), with a superb glissando in "Beauty and the Bellow"; the glorious Pat Kern as Pitti-Sing making so much more of the traditional soubrette; John Heddle Nash giving a singing and acting lesson with Pish-Tush's only solo; and the droll Clive Revill so completely at ease in the comic role of Ko-Ko, (though it is strange that his running out of breath at the end of his verse in the Act Two trio was not corrected!) I have to say that this recording of THE MIKADO puts all other D'Oyly Carte and Glyndeboune recordings in the shade, and the inclusion of highlights from Sadlers Wells IOLANTHE from 1962 is just an added bonus - the overture in this is simply stunning, and how good to hear Eric Shilling, Heather Begg, and Elizabeth Harwood obviously enjoying themselves so much singing Sullivan's most musical of scores.
Finally, a worthy recording of the Mikado!.......2004-03-03
It really does make a difference, when performing Gilbert and Sullivan, to use singers who can act rather than the other way round. Every soloist here utilizes a very forward, "in-the-mask" vocal placement, which not only reduces the need to force, but helps to render their diction crystal-clear. Sample Jean Allister's Katisha. No plummy, oratorio contralto tones for her. Here is all the waspish, incisive malevolence that is already there in the writing; she just reveals it by singing and pronouncing the texts in a light and unforced manner. This approach helps to restore the vim and vigor to an opera that can often seem tired and "played-out" to modern ears. If the recording has any weakness, it may possibly be found in the Yum-yum and Nanki-Poo. Marion Studholme is perhaps more shrill than is necessary, while John Wakefield seems to have wandered in from a performance of Dream of Gerontius. These are minor quibbles, however. The overall excellence of the performance quells any doubts, with Alexander Faris' conducting a model of transparent clarity. The Iolanthe excerpts are also well-done, but it's Mikado that is the jewel here. Don't hesitate; buy it today!

Some Enchanted Evening is enchanting!.......2002-07-26
This album takes you on a stroll down memory lane, enchanting all the way. It is relaxing and soothing listening, and will be great background music for a candlelit dinner for two, an evening party with a mix of ages and backgrounds, or just to sing with while you get some work done. The orchestration is excellent and the performances wonderfully smooth. A hit for everyone!
