These two albums from Little Steven are from 1982 and 1984. Little Steven, aka Steven Van Zandt, continues to record and is still involved with Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band. This CD has been digially remastered and is housed in a slipcase. BGO. 2005.

Digitally Remastered Edition Combining Two Original Albums on a Single Disc from the Long-time Bruce Springsteen Guitarist and Southside Johnny Collaborator. These Albums were First Released in 1982 and 1984 Respectively. Hailed for their Allegiance to Pure Rock N Roll, Van Zant Showed He is as Impassioned as his Best Friend and Recorded These Albums on his Own Terms. Two Songs from "Voice of America" were Covered Notably by Black Uhuru ("Solidarity" on their Album "Anthem") and Jackson Browne ("i Am a Patriot" on his Album "World in Motion". It Remains a Staple of his Concert Repertoire.). Van Zant Would Go on to Record Two More Solo Albums Before Returning to the E Street Band and Embarking on a Successful Acting Career, Where He Achieved his Greatest Fame as Silvio on the Long Running Hbo TV Series "The Sopranos".

Great Double-Disc Set Of Little Steven.......2007-04-02

MEN WITHOUT WOMEN/VOICE OF AMERICA is a great double-disc set of Little Steven Van Zandt, who achieved fame as Bruce Springsteen's guitarist, as a solo artist. The MEN WITHOUT WOMEN disc is a great example of 80s blue-eyed soul that was refreshing in an era when synth-op such as ABC and Duran Duran ruled the roost. This disc contains a great mix of soulful horns, guitars, keyboards, and vocals. The VOICE OF AMERICA portion of this anthology, finds Van Zandt taking on the role of a committed human-rights activist, protesting against both leftist and right-wing dictatorships and calling for people to take charge of the world around them, a theme that is, alas, even more relevant today. Van Zandt's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted also makes this collection an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Yes, Sopranos is fun & Steven's very funny in it, a natural actor.

More important, he's a strong reason Bruce Springsteen is such an immense success with the E Street Band. Little Steven is a superb musician & songsmith -- great melodies, beautiful words.

The Men Without Women disc is a great one, sure joy compared to a lot of the drivel taking up the space in your brain today.

But in VOICE OF AMERICA, Little Steven Van Zandt was touched by the greatest spirits in the universe. It's simply ONE OF THE GREATEST collections of songs on a disc EVER MADE, yowzuh, right up there with Dylan, Lennon, U2, R.E.M. & the others who fill out your top ten. And thank gawd IT'S FINALLY RE-ISSUED! A mint condition copy of VOA sold on Amazon for $160 as recent as last week. My original copy was borrowed and never returned.
I've been aching to get this sound back.

The songs VOICE OF AMERICA, I AM A PATRIOT (absolutely the best arrangement ever produced, notwithstanding the covers of it by great singers all over the world), JUSTICE, SOLIDARITY -- they're all superbly crafted songs, real works of art that will stand up to be cheered a thousand years from now.

You should be sold. You should buy a couple of copies so you can give one to the most special person in your life.

ps: 15 years ago I produced 4 half-hours on the radio, called "Dear Abbie! A Celebration of the Words of Abbie Hoffman."
I was permitted to use Steven's songs from VOA, and all the songs on the series except two were from VOICE OF AMERICA.

Out of the Darkness.......2006-03-10

A great many viewers discovered Little Steven/ Miami Steve Van Zandt from The Sopranos. Time Warp backwards, he was a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. In between he was a social activist, and created the (Don't Play) Sun City album project encouraging artists to boycott the South African resort in an effort to bring an end to apartheid.

I've heard Men Without Women and own Born Again Savage, but I think Little Steven's Voice of America is not only his best work, it's one of the best early '80s albums period. Checkpoint Charlie was prescient in predicting the fall of the Berlin wall: "Wall so high, gotta come down baby." If the news knew anything about popular culture, they would have played that (or The Walls Came Down by the Call) as the soundtrack of that historic moment. The list of great songs goes on and on: "Los Disparacidos (The Disappeared,:" "Undefeated," and especially the piece de resistance, "Out of the Darkness," one of the few songs which, like U2's One, manages to combine relationships aned spirituality. The Boss wrote "Blood Brother" when Steve left the band to pursue these various pursuits. How sad that just when Born in the USA gained the questionable honor of making the cover of Time magazine, his bandmates' best album slipped into obscurity. Hopefully with this double release the Voice of America will for the first time be heard.

Outstanding.......2006-01-09

If you are a fan of Steven Van Zandt you are of course familiar with these two albums. Here is your chance to get them both together (this comes as a two cd set, not both albums on one cd).
The remaster job is excellent, there are also some great liner notes and pictures, BGO did a first class job on this reissue.
There is not much need to go into the music as I am sure that any reading this already know how great these two albums are. Little Steven is great, pure and simple. He writes terrific songs, he is an outstanding singer/guitar player, the band is top notch. and the production is tight.
I highly recommend this set , for 18.99 you can not possibly go wrong.

One of the greatest records you never heard.......2007-04-28

I fell in love with the single, "Forever," the first time I heard it and thought the album was even better. I played this record so much, I just assumed everyone else was into it, too. It wasn't like anything else on the radio, which is probably why it barely cracked the charts. Still, it has terrific songs ("Princess of Little Italy" is a gem), lots of musical muscle, lots of heart, and lots of brains, too. There's some great songwriting on this record, some great imagery. Don't buy it because you like Springsteen. Don't buy it because you like "The Sopranos." Buy it because it's great.

If Only It Didn't Become A Budget-Buster.......2006-11-15

Steve Van Zandt is probably better known today as a cast member on The Sopranos, a radio DJ with a syndicated FM show and a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen when he decides to gig with the E. Street Band.

Van Zandt had left Springsteen to form his own band and release this Stax/Volt-influenced album in 1982. The songs were loosely based on Men Without Women, a 1927 collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway. The initial plans for the album and ensuing promotion was absolutely fantastic; an all-star cast of studio performers, a band that featured the outstanding bass player, Jean Beauvoir, and Felix Cavaliere on piano/organ, and the production of a long-form movie, with the album being the soundtrack.

But Van Zandt did not have a safety net that an established hit-maker like Springsteen could use when the project came in well over budget. Though the album received decent reviews, it could only stagger to a ranking of 118 on the Billboard 200, with the single, Forever, stopping at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The music has held up well over the ensuing 25 years and remains - depending on how one views the project - a tribute to a musician who wanted to test the bounds of innovation for his first project, or a plan closer to another Hemingway title for a short-story collection, Winner Take Nothing.

Second best album ever.......2006-06-17

The best album and by that I mean the most important, is Darkness on the Edge of Town. Add the Jukes' horn section and Miami Steve's songwriting to Darkness and you have Men Without Women. Both albums give you the strength to carry on, to not give in, to fight. If you want to survive without compromise, whatever the cost, because anything else would be to lose yourself, buy both these records. You will never regret it. And you will survive.

Forget Born To Run..........2005-06-23

Men Without Women, along with Southside Johnny's Hearts Of Stone, are the best albums to ever come out of Asbury Park. Just becasue they came after Bruce doesn't mean they couldn't surpass him. As complete albums, MWW and HOS top anything the Boss has done before or since.

MIAMI STEVE HITS A HOMER THE 1ST TIME OUT.......2004-07-14

With the help of a few E-Streeters, a handful of Jukes and even a Plasmatic, Miami Steve knocks the ball out of the park on his first solo album. I was lucky enough to catch Little Steven And The Disciples Of Soul play most of this album live at The Bayou (R.I.P.) on December 19, 1982 right after picking it up on vinyl. It's a shame that it isn't properly represented on the Greatest Hits CD. For some tasty Jersey tunes, look no further.

Mel Gibson staked $30 million and his superstar reputation on this painstakingly bloody interpretation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all the while dodging charges of anti-semitism and fostering excruciating cinematic gore at the expense of Christ's message (a notion that also begs some uncomfortable questions about this version's S&M undertones). But because the film's dialog plays out in ancient authentic language dialects, John Debney's musical score takes on an even more central dramatic role. In some ways an unlikely choice as composer (having cut his teeth on many a lightweight comedy and kidflick) Debney nonetheless rises to the challenge, first conjuring up a synth-laden soundscape whose gothic moodiness should be familiar to admirers of the work of Lisa Gerrard, then seasoning it with indigenous instruments, booming percussion and ancient modalities that give the score an almost palpable sense of time and place. As did Jeff Danna on his earlier score for the gentler, de facto companion piece, The Gospel of John, Debney eventually gets 'round to genuflecting towards some Hollywood choral and melodic traditions (the Gospels themselves having arguably helped lay the original foundations for Tinseltown's venerable three-act structure), but there's nothing cheap about his music of triumph and redemption, rooted as ever in roiling currents of ancient spiritual mysticism. I wish I knew all the names of the instruments that are being played in the score because they are absolutely mesmerizing! What an amazing score to accompany an amazing movie. Never a dull moment, I find myself being moved by the overall emotion of the music. The great thing about epic scores is that they manage to stir up some feelings within you of power, pride, and faith. It manages to inspire some in many different ways. I think that's the most important thing here. You can call it mood music or just simply uplifting. For me, the best way to listen to a score like this is with a great pair of headphones and a clear mind.

This has to be the most touching score to a movie I have ever appreciated.
Watching the movie was one thing but then listening to the score blew me away. I could find myself crying just hearing the music and placing it at the point in the story.
What a range of music. So well done and so different. The song selection for the different scenes in the movie just fit. It is as if each song was the perfection for its placement in the movie.
The score can hold it's own in itself but together they are as one.

Not original .......2007-02-16

I recently purchased both The Passion of the Christ soundtrack and Peter Gabriel's Passion. I really wanted to like The Passion of the Christ score, as I loved the movie. Regrettably, John Debney's music is so much like Peter Gabriel's superb Passion soundtrack, used in 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ that it becomes a farce. It even uses Gabriel's long-time collaborator, vocalist and double violinist Shankar, whose unique sound was also used on Gabriel's Passion. The producers also used a piece from Gabriel's Rabbit Proof Fence soundtrack for The Passion's 2003 teaser trailer. There's no doubt that Debney has copied Gabriel. Also the highlight of The Passion of the Christ is a theme virtually identical to one from John William's Born on the Fourth of July soundtrack.

So buy Gabriel's Passion over The Passion of the Christ, it is a magnificent score and far more original.

Beautiful Soundtrack.......2007-02-03

For me the most inspiring track is "Resurrection". I remember the day that I saw this movie for the first time almost 3 years ago. My friend and I stayed until the end of the credits only to listen to this track. It's my candidate for best final scene in a movie. Now , 'Resurrection" (as the rest of the album) is in my Creative Zen Vision M and I listen to this beautiful piece of music everyday. It's really inspiring. Buy it!!!
P.S. There are so many Jews here and there writing a lot of negative reviews about this soundtrack and the movie. Don't pay any atention to that. This soundtrack and the movie are masterpieces.

Buy Peter Gabriel's Passion.......2007-01-16

Anyone who knows Peter Gabriel's Passion would agree with me in saying that John Debney's score has taken liberally from Gabriel's incredible work, and a few have written as much in the Online reviews for this item. Do yourself a favor, buy Peter Gabriel's Passion. Even though The Last Temptation of Christ may not have been the best movie, the soundtrack was, one of my favorites. I listen to it often, and each time it takes me to another place.

Another plug along Christian movie lines, The Mission by Ennio Morricone, a masterpiece.

A life-changing experience with Andrae.......2003-11-25

I am now 40 years old. Since I was 14 I became an Andrae fan. His songs have totally inspired my and have taken me through the darkest moments of my life. His Finally albumn is one of the treasure in his collection. I sang Sweet Communion with just my guitar in Mozambique recently and the people were blest tremendously. God bless, you Andrae. You have had a bigger impact in my life that my Sunday School teachers!!

This is some really great music from someone who's usually behind Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny.

An acquired taste well worth acquiring........2004-03-03

Honestly, Little Steven has never really had a hit. And that's not really fair. There's some really good tunes here.
The multi-talented Mr. Van Zandt is best known as Springsteen's right hand man; he steals every scene he's in while playing 'Silvio' on "The Sopranos" and is responsible for a nationwide garage band radio program. He wrote and produced what I feel is the best "protest" song of OUR generation, "Sun City."
First off, his voice takes a little getting used to. It's a real voice, meaning he sounds authentic, but it's not what I would call "soothing". It's not meant to be. Nasal and whining, but services the songs very well (for the most part). When he's wailing "I will gather no more of your bitter fruit", it sounds just right.
Second, the production aspects on his earlier "singles" sound less dated than the later songs, due to their heavy dance-rock 80's style synths and drums.
Third...the funny thing is that I like THOSE later songs more. His songwriting clearly improves, as does his singing.
He's a phenomenal lyricist...plain and straightforward, an old-fashioned story teller.

And he's angry...hoo boy. He laments the plight of the Indians ("Native American" with a killer vocal by Bruce), the immigrant worker ("Bitter Fruit"...an irresistible beat with the great Ruben Blades on co-vocals), apartheid (the butt-shaking "Pretoria").

He rails against Reagan in "Vote!".
Not only does he wear his opinion on his sleeve, it's in neon lights. With the volume turned up to 11.
His earlier songs, like "Princess of Little Italy", don't leave as much of a lasting impression, but you'll still enjoy listening to his crack supporting band, The Disciples of Soul.
It'd be nice if someone would release this here in America. This is a great sampler for those of us wanting to get to know this particular musician.

Who had the Brain Fart when they were choosing the tracks that went on this "Greatest Hits"? How can this be a greatest hits package when one of the all time greatest relationship songs was left off of it.? How could they have omitted the heart grabbing "Inside of Me" from "Men Without Women"?

Silvio Dante's best Work.......2001-12-13

Steve van Zandt (Silvio Dante from the Sopranos)
proves that social consciousness and straight forward rock
mix very well. Start with the Carribean rhythms in
"Bitter Fruit" and crank it.
"Pretoria" starts weakly for about 15 seconds then becomes a haunting mix
of African tribal chants and rock & roll.

The only flaw: is the exclusion of the longer version of "Out Of The Darkness"
for the truncated top 40 version.

Lukewarm Set from Red Hot Singer/Songwriter.......2001-07-18

This is a nice mix ~ and certainly a good place for one to become acquainted with Little Steven's music. Yet, I would recommend the individual albums which comprise this collection (MEN WITHOUT WOMEN, VOICE OF AMERICA, FREEDOM NO COMPROMISE). One thing that I cannot understand about this collection is the absence of the song "I Am a Patriot" (which can be found on VOICE OF AMERICA). It is a song that has been covered by Jackson Browne and Pearl Jam ~ and would certainly qualify as a "greatest hit" over the majority of what is on this compilation. It should be noted that this compilation was put together without Little Steven's consent/blessing. In other words, he really had little to do with the final track-listing. Had he been consulted, I'm sure it would have been a completely different CD. Still, keep this in mind ~ a mediocre collection from one of the best still makes for a darn good listen. My only grip is that it is just "okay" ~ if done properly (as in having Steven compile the material for this disc) ~ it could have been GREAT.

This CD is one of 3 samplers from the Blood & Fire label. A great collage of artists and masterpieces of music mixed together to form this lp. With Tappa Zukie, King Tubby, Burning Spear and many others, you will not be disappointed. Its filled with the creme de la creme of heavy sounds of the reggae era, the "golden" age of reggae. Its a must have!!

i have to say this is the hardest album to find but well worth it i'm so glad i got to listen to it on the sample menu. i don't use my credit card on the net but for this i will.very very good music for praise and sharing.
