Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." As he proves with this five-star album, he is also among the most gifted artists ever to a turn a stint on the show into a recording career. --Tammy La Gorce

3 out of 5 stars Where's the Jazz...?.......2007-07-30

This is more about my musical preference than Elliott's album. That said, I'm pleased to see that he's being recorded. This is more about the type of music, rather than the quality. I love his voice. Selfishly, I'd like to hear more of him on the "Smooth Jazz" network. So.....I listened to the entire sampler first, and while I consider Elliott to be one of the best vocalists to pass through the Star Search mill, I truly believe that his handlers have yet to fit him into his zone. How can anyone listen to "Moody's Song" from the Season 5 show and album, and not see that Elliott should be showcasing his voice with quality jazz standards. Geeze, I'd love to hear Elliott do an album of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Sorry R&B'ers, but like a few other gifted singers that have passed through the Star Search machine, the material that made their voices soar on the show, the songs that said, "He/She sings this song better than I've heard it sung before...", well, that material doesn't seem to make it to their first commercial offerings? I'm not in the industry, yet I feel that as soon as someone puts Elliott into the same music circle of talent like Al Jarreau, Michael Franks and Bonnie Raitt...(yes, a mixed bag, but so talented), he'll shine as bright as any of today's contemporary smooth or traditional jazz greats. Give this boy the right material.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive debut!.......2007-07-30

I admit it, I watch the show. I've watched it from about mid-way season 1. This is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. Elliott's voice and genuine feeling captured me, no question. I don't care about his mother (sorry), I don't care about his diabetes, or his deafness (again, sorry--I know other people care about this kind of stuff, but I don't). He has a voice that fills me up!! I don't know a more eloquent way to say it, and for that, I apologize. But, his voice makes me joyous!

Some of the songs on this CD felt a little lacking at first, but just let Elliott overwhelm you with his feeling--and believe me he will. He takes these songs--some of them average, some impressive--he takes them to a different level. He's shown it here, give him better songs, and he will hit them outta the field! Honestly, I can't wait to see what he does next.

5 out of 5 stars Elliott's AMAZING.......2007-07-25

I love it. I have never bought an American Idol record before... I've heard the songs they HAD to put out and hated them. I thought Elliott was so good on American Idol that I thought, like many others, that he should have remained on the show (like Daughtry also should have) but, nonetheless, he was dropped. Much to my shock, while walking through a department store I recently heard a song I loved.. it was "Wait for You" by Elliott. I was floored. He sounds SOOOO wonderful. Now I'm one of his biggest fans. Trust me, his voice just doesn't disappoint. And he's so down-to-earth in interviews and when he sings on shows (like Good Morning America, etc) that you can't do anything but just adore him. It's a great album and I look forward to his future released with great anticipation.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely lovely lovely.......2007-07-21

After I saw him in American Idol, I have been waiting for his CD, and now that it's here, I can't stop listening to it. His voice is very nice and he CAN sing. A good choice if you want nice music.

4 out of 5 stars An exceptional debut that grows on you.......2007-07-20

Elliott Yamin in my opinion probably has the best voice of any of the contestants from AI season 5, even though I liked Chris Daughtry a little better overall, I was pulling big time for them both to be in the finale. Alas neither of them made it, so I was excited to know that Elliott had gotten a record deal, because I was fearful he might not get one since he's not as commercially friendly as some of that season's alums, and it would have been a shame to let his amazing voice go unsigned. All that said however, if I would have reviewed this album three months ago when I first listened to it, I definitely wouldn't have given it a 4/5 stars, it probably would have been more around a 2 to 2.5.

Indeed when I first bought the album and upon the initial listens, I couldn't help but be disappointed that such a great talent had put out a CD that in my opinion was very forgettable, granted I did like a few songs at first, such as the first single "Wait For You" and "Movin On". Thankfully I refused to give up on the album, and after making myself listen to the tracks multiple times I soon realized my initial impressions of the album were pretty off. No this is not a 5 star album or a classic in my opinion (but then again how many debut albums are?), but I now regard it as a very solid r&b/pop album. The tracks on this album really do grow on you, so I just want to stress to fans of Yamin that if they're not crazy about the album at first give it a chance before making your final judgments.

The album is definitely very R&Bish / soulful (who says white men can't have soul right?), but there are also pop influences present on the album. Almost every song is well written, especially such ones as "Find a Way", a modern R&B track about the unfairness of the world, and how love has to find a way in order to cope with it all. "Free" is another lyrical highlight about how we have the freedom to be able to make our dreams realities if we put our mind to it, although it's not one of my favorite songs melody-wise.

Some of my favorite melodies on the album are the mid tempo first single "Wait For You" which mixes R&B and pop, and the soft and soothing "You Are The One", a straight up love ballad. "Train Wreck" is a pure R&B song, and a favorite of mine, where Yamin's voice is in top form as he sings about a relationship thats heading for a "train wreck", and I love the hook of the song. On the other end, I love the upbeat rhythms of "Movin On", which boasts a hand clapping beat that accompanies lyrics about getting tired of waiting for his significant other to decide what she wants, and "movin on" with his life. "Alright" is another upbeat track, that wouldn't feel out of place in a club, the song definitely has a hip/hop vibe to it and to me sounds similar to something Usher would record. It's a great change of pace and another favorite of mine.

Thats another good thing about the album, there really is a variety of appeal on here, "Wait For You" and "You Are the One" for example would be perfect for ac radio or even pop, whereas I could see songs like "Movin On" and "Alright" fitting in on current R&B/Hip Hop stations, the album really has a range of appeal from old to young, Adult Contemporary to R&B. Even commercially the album has potential, "Wait For You" has so far become a top 20 hit on the Billbaord Hot 100, and I don't think its the only song on here capable of making it into that tier of the charts.

But perhaps the best thing about this album, is Yamin's voice itself. Even when I wasn't too into the songs yet, I still loved listening to Yamin's strong soulful voice, which shines on pretty much every track here, and fans of Yamin should enjoy the "A Song For You" cover, which is definitely a showcase for Yamins vocals. Even the tracks I don't really care for such as "I'm the Man" and "Take My Breath Away" are made much better by the voice thats singing them.

So overall I'm pleased with Elliott's debut, it took some time, but the album is one that I'll be listening to for awhile. If Yamin can improve upon his debut and grow more as an artist, he should have a long, bright career ahead. 4/5 stars

Nobody knows heartache like Mary J. knows heartache. But as she releases her seventh disc, perhaps more important is that nobody understands better how unquenchable our thirst to hear what it sounds like can be. The Breakthrough, contrary to run-up rumors, is no retrospective or greatest-hits package. Rather than reheat, Blige and producers Dr. Dre, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Will.i.am tasked themselves with stirring a river of hurt into some of the highest-caliber hip-hop/soul to hit the airwaves since she burned up the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack with "Not Gon' Cry." Cameos alone could sell this disc: Brook, Jay-Z, Raphael Saadiq, and Bono step up. But it's the trademark ragged-edged soul of its star that shines brightest throughout the 16 tracks. "A love that tears you down ain't really love," a laid-bare Blige reminds us on "Ain't Really Love," after dedicating "Good Woman Down" to "my troubled sisters." Somewhere in between, she leaves absolutely no room for doubt that she just can't be without her baby ("Be Without You"). It's an exhilarating, love-affirming moment on a CD jammed full of them (check out "Can't Get Enough," with its echoes of a pleading Curtis Mayfield). Blige, never far from the thoughts of the lovelorn, didn't need a breakthrough, but anybody with an ear for artful confession will be glad she's given us The Breakthrough anyway. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Appropriate Album Title for a Terrific Album.......2007-04-16

When it comes to Tiffany (and several other 1980's singers) the problem is that fans, critics and people who aren't fans won't let the singer "grow up" so to speak. They label each new album the artist puts out after 1990 as a "comeback", but really, how many times can someone make a comeback? Well, Tiffany has done it at least three times, and "Dust off and Dance" is another great album by the former teen-queen, far superior to any of the present so-called teen-queens. It should be noted, that Tiffany's album prior to this one, "The Color of Silence" is another superpb album, but with an entire different feel to it.

"Dust off and Dance", is quite likely to be a reference to Tiffany herself dusting off the past (be it harsh reviewes, haters, or the mood of "The Color of Silence"), and quite literally just dancing. At least "Dust off and Dance" doesn't try to be anything more than a dance / disco / Hi NRG album - and a fantastic one at that. Production blends the best of modern day sounds with a bit of the 80's, combined with Tiffany's powerful voice and some great lyrics, most of which are written by her, resulting in an album that is easy to listen to over and over again.

The songs may not seem as deep on the surface as those from her previous album, but they all tell a story and do have important meanings to them, like enjoying life as it is so short. Some of the songs and lyrics are a bit suggestive, but the album was written, according to Tiffany, with her gay fans in mind. It's also appropriate for the dance floor (obviously). While the overall mood of the album is upbeat, there are a couple of ballads, but even they are upbeat. It's great to see that the album has been getting some play on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty". The biggest problem with the album though is that it is too short - only eleven songs, two of which are remixes. But hey, quality over quantity anyday.

Highlights: Be With U Tonite, Ride It, Na Na Na

Low Points: Kama Sutra, I Think We're Alone Now (remix)

5 out of 5 stars kids point of view.......2007-04-04

cd was for my daughter and she thought it was excellent.

3 out of 5 stars A good attempt to comeback.......2007-01-11

Not one of Tiffany's best work. This disco-ish CD is ok, not the Tiffany that we're all familiar with. It's nice to see she's still recording, but it doesn't measure up to her earlier work. Her last CD "Color of Silence" was excellent, the songs were great. Had more feeling in it. If you're a Tiffany fan like me, then add this to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars 2 and half - Not Quite What I've been Expected..........2007-01-10

Well, I have to say I only start to know and love Tiffany from her come back 6 years ago, with some amazing songs like "Open My Eyes" and the exceptionally heart melting "If Only". I have absolute no idea what sort of her music in the 90s or 80s and have no intention of exploring it since the pop music from those period is a bit odd for me. Since this album was rather new and the review said it relflects her best in the past, I decided to buy it. There are some songs that quite upbeat, with lots of catchy tunes but I still prefer her previous work. This album is a bit blend, lack of emotion and there are some songs just sound alike. It's unavoidable since Trance and House just got a limited sound effect to play around with in the arragement, I think you know what I mean. Anyway, if you looking for a feel good family or even birthday party, you can go with this one. But if you fond of flowing with emotion and smooth melodies, then the last album would be the best choice.

Well U have to be a fan of pop or club music to really enjoy this latest CD of Tiffany's .Her latetest effort is a complete 180 from her last cd THE COLOR OF SILENCE but I luv both due to the fact u get to listen to her great vocals but with that said Dust Off And Dance is the correct title for this So Get This if U WANNA DANCE! 5 out of 5 stars Good Job, Colorado Mass Choir.......2007-05-02

I put this CD on and wondered why I hadn't purchase this CD earlier. My loss, but oh what an outstanding effort put forward by this choir. Joe Pace really know how to put things together. All the songs are well above average and you will be astounded at the vocal and musical arrangements on this CD. Play this CD and get your "Spiritual Breakhrough"!

5 out of 5 stars Top notch.......2007-03-11

You can always expect great anointed music from this choir. The full sounds of music and voices make their latest CD a true blessing!

4 out of 5 stars Stands up to repeated listenings -- what a flow.......2006-12-02

Joe Pace is an artistic minister that you can consistently count on to turn out sets that run from decent to great. This one is quite solid. While no individual song by itself is a groundbreaking standout, the flow of this CD is absolutely awesome. I just opened the jewel case yesterday and the disc is on its 5th spin as I write this.

As usual with Minister Pace's projects, we have consistently good arrangements, simple lyrics and good soloists who never get carried away. Of note is the brotha who leads the title track, who sounds a LOT like J. Moss. An effective church medley of old-school gospel hits is included and presented in a way that will be satisfying even to younger folks who may not recall the originals. And the overall selection of songs provides the mix of styles this crew is known for.

Again ... there is nothing earth-shattering here, but if you like spiritual music at all you're sure to really like or love PRAISE 'TIL YOU BREAK THROUGH. And fans of Joe Pace and Colorado Mass Choir will love and appreciate it right away, because it is typical in every way of one of their albums. Recommended.

And above all else, beautiful. Caroline rocks! This album just blows my mind. It's so, well, just see above. Favorites include So Uncool, Innocence Sleeping and Greenwood Laddie. The Armenian on Handful of Ashes is a bit too much for me to handle and borderline pretentious but that's really my only issue with this album. Caroline is humble, genuine and brilliant. Her other two albums are good too but this is my favorite of the three.

5 out of 5 stars Past and present - shaken, not stirred.......2004-11-09

Very different from the previous two albums, and yet, in a way, similar: "A distant bell" is a Lavelle 100% and one of the finest albums I've ever heard. Traditional songs, poems set in music and original compositions, they all blend in in a wonderful and delicate mix that shows its strenghts hearing after hearing. 'So uncool' will blow you away, 'No more words' will make you dance... 'Timeless' will make you love her.

"A Distant Bell" is Caroline Lavelle's third solo album. She has collaborated with many artists ranging from BT ("The Great Escape"), Chicane ("Lost You Somewhere") and Massive Attack ("Home of The Whale") to Vangelis ("Come To Me"), Hector Zazou ("The Freeze, "Lies Will Flow") and the violinist Nigel Kennedy ("Breathing Stone"). She has also contributed to Muse's "Origin of Symmetry", Radiohead's "The Bends", Loreena McKennitt's "Book of Secrets" and the legendary Irish band Chieftains, attending live tours of these artists with her cello and backing vocals.

A versatile sought-after vocalist and cellist by artists of classic, new age, electronic, chamber folk genres, Caroline Lavelle established alongside her collaborations a parallel solo career that has been one of profound experimentation. Merging traditional Irish tunes with electronic blends (on debut "Spirit", produced by William Orbit), she released an album which surpasses all the likes of Enya. Her second album, "Brilliant Midnight" is a brilliant showcase of her own song-writing and producing skills as well as the depths of her personality.

"A Distant Bell", her third solo effort intermingles, again, the traditional British-Irish tunes with that very creative and sensual attitute towards song-wirting and performing that she exhibited in her previous records. All the songs are crafted with a careful sense of perfection alongside many moments of inspirational spontaneity.

To the changes undergone, "A Distant Bell" has a minimum electronics and maximum of acoustics. The majority of the songs are performed with strings, haunting guitars, pianos and Lavelle's wonderful voice. The result is a unique and fresh interpretation of evergreen traditionality. Her distinctive voice accompany the album's emotive melodies so smoothly as to put you into a state of insurmountable captivation of music.

The haunting emotional essence of the record is further reinforced with her well-crafted self-written songs like gentle "So Uncool", the catchy Irish gem "No More Words", "Too Late" and the glorious climax "Timeless", which goes

"But old love grows so long / that the part above the ground has less effect / and time can wither tender shoots / but leaves those roots secure and strong / But the best love has no time / no forwards, backwards but only now / It's strong arms hold you when you walk and / if you fall you're always caught"... This is exquisite poetry clothed with music, at its best! A perfect 50 min. for forgetting the day and embarking on an acoustic chamber folk journey!

Also don't forget visit Caroline's website carolinelavelle.com where you can stream all the the songs on the album plus discover background of her previous albums, her own record label and some B-sides!

      Album Description

Mitch Mitchell and his Terrifying Experience tear apart the rock paradigm, bringing all of its raw eccentricities into full view: garage, psychedelia, punk and the cosmic spaces in between. Mitch Mitchell played guitar in the "classic line-up" of Guided By Voices, while other TEX members have been in semi-legendary Ohio punk/underground bands such as: The Method, Pica Huss, Vibralux and Monster Truck 005. Magnetic Breakthrough is psych damaged, full-on, rock 'n roll - make no mistake.

        Album Description

One of the most essential garage albums ever, loaded with the trademark harmonies, Leslie-fied guitar licks, and hypnotizing combo organ of Chicago's NC6. The CD features new notes by singer/tambourine basher Ray Graffia and ultra-cool unseen pics! Unstoppably brilliant! Originally released in 1966. Sundazed. 2002.

4 out of 5 stars Mid-60s Chicago garage and harmony.......2007-05-03

Like their Chicago compatriots the Buckinghams and Cryin' Shames, the New Colony Six evolved from garage rock to a more polished harmony sound. Though not as bluesy as The Shadows of Knight, this 1966 debut still features a good helping of organ, petulant vocals, and ten originals (and two covers) of teenage romantic distress. The British Invasion influences are strong, with Zombies-like minor keys and Yarbirds-styled R&B, including a cover of the latter's "Mister, You're a Better Man That I" and the original rave-up "At the River's Edge."

Sundazed's reissue reproduces the album's original twelve tracks. An earlier Sundazed release, "At the River's Edge," drops the Yardbirds cover and a live remake of The McCoy's "Hang on Sloopy" in favor of a non-LP single and most of the group's second album, "Colonization." The latter is also available as a separate CD with bonus tracks. The curious are best served by the "River's Edge" compilation, fans should pick up the individual LPs, plus the two-fer "Treat Her Groovy," which combines the band's third and fourth LPs. 4 out of 5 stars A Willingness & Wanting 4 U!.......2004-11-06

New Colony Six were a great Chicago band. With the Buckinghams & Cryan Shames, they were gusts of fresh air for the late 60s Chicago rock scene. This CD has the same cover photograph for the compilation "At the River's Edge," which might seem a bit confusing. All of the tracks from this set except their live version of "Sloopy" are also on "At the Rivers Edge."

I early bought the "Colonization" LP and have been hunting for this lp for over 3 decades; so I'm way jazzed that Sundazed has done a re-release. This is their original first release.

"At the River's Edge" is a superb rave-up which Ray Graffia confesses shows their Yardbirds influence. "I Lie Awake" was the flip side of the original "River's Edge" single release. It has the NC6 dreamy harmonies and Jerry Kollenburg's churning guitar, "I like awake counting my time, a breaking heart, a woeful soul which I have signed away; I want my love back." "Dawn Is Breaking" has more of those incredible beat/pause/build shifts that seem abrupt in a 2-minute song, but make their music fascinating decades later. "Mister You're A Better Man Than I" is a musically dark garage rock track that advocates tolerance and racial harmony. Craig Kemp's organ floats in & out of "Some People Think I'm A Playboy." "I Confess" with its unique sounding guitar & its haunting chorus retains a romantic hopefulness despite a difficult romance, "You'll be with me 'til eternity & be mine, the sun from above will be our love 'til the end of time." "Breakthrough" is a welcome re-release of a classic hard-to-find early album. Enjoy!

I have this CD and I am ordering more for family and friends.
This CD will uplift and touch you in your heart center. I have never heard more beautiful and Soul touching songs before. Each song sung is precious. My favorite song is Pilomaya. Pilomaya is a special song of expressing gratitude in Lakota. I highly recommend this CD. It is great!
