Editorial Reviews
With her exotic beauty and steamy voice, Sade couldn't help but be a star. Taking the more sensuous elements of island beats, smooth jazz, and R&B, Sade scored major hits with the continental feel of "Smooth Operator" and the sultry stylization of "Your Love Is King." Her voice was often criticized for being thin, yet she made it work to her advantage with songs like the haunting "Jezebel," on which her delivery added the vulnerability necessary to the song. Sade sounded best when she stuck to the lower register, and there is nothing thin about her dynamic handling of her torch song "Is It a Crime." "The Sweetest Taboo" was one of her last great moments before years of mediocrity, chronicled here by the lifeless "Stronger Than Pride" and the limp "Nothing Can Come Between Us." "No Ordinary Love" was a return to form with the smoky richness back in her vocals and the urban/island feel of her first release. Best of Sade goes right up to her hit "Pearls," which, remixed, became a dance floor hit. The nicest surprise here is "Please Send Me Someone to Love," with Sade proving that although her range may be limited vocally, she doesn't suffer the same fate artistically. --Steve Gdula

The Marchioness de Sade.......2007-05-27
As musical wallpaper for yuppies it's unbeatable, however, it doesn't withstand much deconstruction. To begin with, Sade Adu is more exotic than beautiful, and her voice is very, very limited. It has a buttery texture, but almost no range. There is some excitement in her lower register, which is where she generates the most feeling. Overall, Sade resembles Linda Ronstadt in that she makes the most of a range that extends all the way from A to B. Her pop sensibility is right on time, as in Smooth Operator, but when she attempts to dig down into something real and vivid, as in Jezebel, the results are awkward and embarrassing.
Hey kids! Sade is also the name of the group! Keyboards, guitar & sax, and bass. (Perhaps the drum sounds are made by the sax?) These guys have the presence of narcoleptic L.A. session men. (Just give me the chart, man.) Which brings up the real genius of the CD, and the glue that holds it together. Robin Millar, producer. Millar uses everything, including Sade herself, as raw material, arranging, rearranging, fading in and out, sweetening, mixing, remixing. The individual musicians are completely unimportant, their relationships and dynamics meaningless. Every note is a digital file that Millar fashions to his will. This is what accounts for the incredibly smooth, homogenized overall vibe.
If you doubt this, try Track 14, Please Send Me Someone To Love. This has the sparsest arrangement and the most minimal instrumentation on the CD. Sade's limitations as a singer are glaring here, it's painful; the song has as much emotion as a dishwasher repair manual. Without Millar's brilliantly crafted palace of sound around her, The Marchioness de Sade is just another odd-looking chirp from abroad.
The Best of Sade, indeed.......2007-02-27
After listening to the entire album, I have become an unmitigated Sade lover. Helen Folasade Adu, better known as Sade Adu, easily became my favorite singer after this album. Her undeniably sultriness and the sensuality that emanates from her songs give her a unique singing presence. Let's not forget her incredible voice that breathes life into the aforementioned qualities. I like almost every song on this album and I was never a Sade fan. The album has its strong points like the smooth opening song "Your Love is King"; the bounciness and appeal of "Smooth Operator"; the seriousness of "Jezebel" and "Pearls"; the beauty of "Kiss of Life"; the sensual nature of "No Ordinary Love"; the playfulness yet longing of "The Sweetest Taboo"; and the heartfelt emotion of songs like "Is It A Crime", "Love Is Stronger than Pride", and the undeniable hit "Cherish the Day".
I bought this album looking for a few songs, only to have most of them resonate with me. Some of the less popular songs may even resonate with you and or enamor you more so then her most popular songs. My personal favorites besides those that most already love are "Love is Stronger than Pride", which I liked after first hearing it and still do now, and "Is it a Crime", which grew on me. Sade's soulful, graceful elegance is definitely discernable through out the album.
If it isn't conspicuous by now, I definitely recommend this CD.

Album Description
European only Gold-Disc pressing is housed in a die-cut slip case, exposing the gold disc. The serene, understated quality of Sade's arrangements lend this Best Of Sade its classic touch of elegance. Delicate washes of percussion and acoustic guitar, the coiled intensity of Stewart Matthewman's tenor saxophone counterpoint, Andrew Hale's suave, elusive keyboard colorations, and Paul S. Denman's discretely dancing bass provide a maximum of smoke, but precious little fire. The simmering aftermath of Sade's music is as deceptively powerful as a mixed drink: smooth and sweet going down, but with a surprisingly potent kick. Features the same mastering and 16 tracks that grace the US edition. Epic. 2005.Album Details

First came the jazz flavored "Diamond Life." "Smooth Operator" burst from the radio like a tidal wave, her fresh, clean sound washing over us and immediately garnering millions of loyal fans who couldn't wait for the next release.
Blue was the color Sade's second album, "Promise." Her music has always been an eclectic mix of light jazz and blues, and in her follow up to the more jazz oriented "Diamond Life" she colored this one with the blues. Fast and rhythmic tunes such as "The Sweetest Taboo" were mixed in with the blues like a sudden rain shower.
Sade and her band gave "Stronger Than Pride" a lighter tone than the bluesy "Promise" which preceded it. It had the feel of sandy shores at twilight and the nightlife of palm trees and exotic drinks with flowers in them. It was a lush but spare production of rythms and vocals blending perfectly to create a special atmosphere. No matter where you were, or what you were doing, once it was playing you were somewhere else. And it was a good place to be. Songs like "Stronger Than Pride" and "Paradise" conjured thoughts of exotic beaches and sandy shores.
Love Deluxe was Sade's concept album on love. It was filled with the euphoria of loving and being loved romantically. Even the love of a mother desperately trying to feed her daughter was touched upon. Soulful and deeply moving efforts like "Pearls" and "Like a Tattoo" alternated between sensual and happy songs such as "Kiss of Life" and "Cherish the Day" It was a magical CD that you never tired of listening to.
Sade would be absent for a long time after this was released, with only this "Best Of Sade" released before she returned several years later. Maybe only she knew how long it would be this time and decided to leave something wonderous to tide us over. This collection is soothing and beautiful, the vocals artistry in motion. Sade reaches into her soul and lays bare both the joy and misery love can bring upon us.
This is an exquisite CD with almost a spiritual feel to it. Sade's fans are loving and loyal and that feeling has always been returned from Sade. This is everything that is good about music, a rich and rewarding journey into the heart. In a career filled with wonderful moments, these are some of her finest. Don't miss this basket of potpouri given as a gift from the lovely, talented Sade Adu. This is a gift for the heart.
