Product Description
In their lives and music, The Treniers, led by twins Claude and Clifford, were the embodiment of wild good times. But their raucous, often outrageous, behavior, as entertaining as it was, was only a hint of the magic they wrought in their music. In their electricity and elan, The Treniers blurred the boundaries between rock and R&B and in the process, influenced legions of pop artists who followed. This twentry-nine track reissue contains twenty cuts digitally remastered for an Epic/Legacy "Best Of" release from 1995 (all tracks originally recorded 1951-55) and a whopping nine bonus tracks from singles released on the Okeh label in 1952 and 1953.

5 out of 5 stars An Act That Had To Be Seen In Person.......2007-07-31

If you're searching about for a singing group which can be best summed up as THE pioneer for some of the wilder R&R vocal groups that began to form up late in the 1950s and then throughout the 1960s and 1970s, look no further. The Treniers were it.

If you recall Michael J. Fox doing his guitar routine before a stunned 1955 high-school audience in the film Back To The Future, that more or less gives you an idea as to how these guys were greeted several years earlier than that. The wildest R&B acts one might have seen at the time was Wild Bill Moore and, for the white audiences, the early Bill Haley, who was admittedly influenced by The Treniers.

But these guys - twin brothers Claude and Cliff Trenier [who had once sung with the Jimmie Lunceford band in the 1940s], along with their other brothers Buddy and Milt, all from Mobile, Alabama - were on a whole different plateau with their absolutely stunning stage act, featuring wailing sax solos which would soon become an integral part of many bands as well as those backing individual artists. And although it did not translate into huge record sales [they had just the one charted hit - Go! Go! Go! - a # 10 R&B in 1951 b/w Plenty Of Money for Columbia's Okeh subsidiary - both included here], they did establish a faithful following that carried on well into the 1950s.

That included appearances in the movies Don't Knock The Rock [1956 with Haley and Little Richard, among others], The Girl Can't Help It [1956 with Little Richard, Fats Domino, The Platters, Gene Vincent, and others] and Calypso Heat Wave [1957 with The Tarriers, a group which then included actor Alan Arkin, and The Hi-Lo's]. Each film is memorable now only for the music and it would be nice if someone could release a DVD containing ONLY those moments because the acts by The Treniers have to be seen to be believed.

This is a compilation you must have if your interest includes acts that most influenced what was to become Rock 'N Roll.

4 out of 5 stars Fun CD offers rhythm-and-blues from a high-energy group.......2002-03-19

I bought this CD on the strength of The Treniers' guest appearance in the film "Don't Knock the Rock," in which the band's hard-driving music is punctuated by comical shouts and schtick. Given the visual aspect of their act, I wasn't expecting as much firepower from the CD, but I was pleasantly surprised. The compilation offers a cross-section of The Treniers' solid musicianship ("Rockin' Is Our Business," "Go Go Go," "Rockin' on Sunday Night" ); novelty numbers ("Hadacol," a bluesy hymn to an alcohol-laced pain reliever; "Bald Head," about a disastrous courtship; "Say Hey," which features some hilarious delivery about baseball's Willie Mays); and sly, tongue-in-cheek humor ("Ride, Man, Ride," the Lone Ranger parody in their boisterous nightclub act; and its original flip side, the questionable "Poon-Tang!"). The CD could have used more discographical information for the intrigued listener, but it's a good introduction to one of the longest-running, hardest-working acts in show business.

4 out of 5 stars The birth of rock and roll.......1998-08-21

I grew up listening to my father tell stories about the Treniers playing in our hometown of Wildwood. Several years ago I was able to see them perform in Atlantic City. Despite their age, they put on a great show. The CD captures the joy and energy of a group that was a tremendous influence in the early days of rock and roll. If you like Louis Jordan, Joe Turner or other founding fathers, you'll like this ablum. There are a couple of weak tracks, but overall the record "rocks, rolls, swings and jumps."

5 out of 5 stars I approve!.......2004-05-12

It's not very often that I pick up a CD & enjoy every single track on it, but it has happened with this one! JJ has a very unique sound which incorporates Rockabilly, Blues & Swing. Not many bands can pull that mix off well, but with them this is a magical combo.

...And as if the entire CD isn't catchy enough, their remake of WASP's "I Wanna Be Somebody" is an absolute gem in the remake department! I always thought it was a great song, but JJ went & improved it!

In summary: "Excellent"!

1 out of 5 stars don't buy it!.......2003-07-14

I played in this band for over two years.

even tho I invested in and played on this recording, I've not received one red cent, never seen any contracts, despite having asked repeatedly to see them. but gee, they keep selling the cd. not nice people.

the jerks running this band destroyed it (and a lot more than that, but I'm too nice to go into it; let them live in their own swill) with their terrible egos and mad selfishness.

don't give money to these creeps. pity them and keep your money instead.

5 out of 5 stars Smith & Jones are Brilliant!.......2003-06-25

This cd rocks! The best swing band I've heard since Benny Goodman. It's by far the most original swing band I've heard in a long time. A must buy!

1 out of 5 stars hey this is fake swing.......2002-08-19

this band has a horrible orchestra. It is like some lame rock and roll, not swing at all.Weak songs with lame lyrics. I tell all you swing cats out there take my advice stay away from this band. It is boring and not danceable. It is trying to change the music and boy it....

3 out of 5 stars Ruined by track #14 Come Back to Bed "special effects".......1999-06-05

There are many variations of swing music avaiable at the moment, and this is one. There are other interpretations that I prefer - Brian Setzer, Indigo Swing, BESO & SN Zippers ... but this one was quite acceptable. But ... track 14 Come Back to Bed ruined it because it had a ridiculous change in tempo, followed by quite serious static which sound like the needle finishing on a vinyl record, followed by a long silence. The static is that bad, I wonder if it is damaging my Axis LS88 hi-fi speakers. Sometimes these "effects" can come off successfullly, and there is always a temptation to use them, but I think it failed badly in this case, and ruined the CD.

5 out of 5 stars R&B Evolves Into Rock and Roll.......2006-05-10

The Treniers broke out of the R&B mold with their "big beat" music and this album displays them at their rockin' best!
Great songs and a wild honking sax make this a fun album.
A minus is the lack of decent liner notes but this is more than made up for by the great sound quality of this recording.

5 out of 5 stars re-issue.......2005-04-23

This CD is a re-issue of the Epic/Legacy release of the same name, with 9 extra tracks. If you want to hear sound samples of the first 20 tracks on this CD, go to the Amazon listing for the Epic/Legacy version.

Just FYI, if you're ever in the Chicago area, you can catch Milt Trenier playing live at a local venue somewhere, check his site for info: http://www.rockabilly.net/milttrenier/
