5 out of 5 stars Better than the originals .......2007-01-29

I own several DJ Krush albums and love his dark, brooding, trip-hop influenced style. But with Stepping Stones, I found the perfect DJ Krush listening experience. This album is darker and more sinister than his original work. The first CD, Lyricism, is essentially a hip-hop/trip-hop album featuring a number of guest vocalists, including The Roots, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, Anticon, and others. The overall quality of CD #1 is so good that it's hard for me to name any favorite tracks, but #8 and #11 just blow me away. The second CD, Soundscapes, features haunting instrumental remixes of some of Krush's best originals. Again, the overall quality is great, so I won't name any favorite tracks. With this double-CD album, you get two distinctly different listening experiences. Call it hard/soft, active/passive, whatever. The first CD kicks you in the teeth, the second hypnotizes you.

4 out of 5 stars One CD hot, the other not as much........2007-01-23

First, I am a HUGE Krush fan, and have all of his other works (less some singles and foreign releases).

This is a double CD, which is always a plus.

- First CD is LYRICISM, as the name suggests, all the tracks are lyrics, mostly rap/hip-hop. The music is decent, but not up to my expectation of Krush. The remixes of wonderful songs from other CD's (the originals) are not nearly as good, if not lame. I was a little disappointed with this CD. Tracks range from 'meh' to OK.

- Second is SOUNDSCAPES, as the name suggests, this is ambient/chill. In my opinion, this is WAY better than the first CD. Great music (track 12 annoys me, though) overall. If you have a very, very good 2-channel system (not computer speakers, not an iPod dock, but a proper 2-channel audio system), the last track on this CD is a blast (lots of distorted, warped, and bizarre sounds that are a blast to hear).

I hold Krush to a very high, if not unfair, standard (one he has earned by making what I consider some of the best music out there) - and this album falls just a little short. Not bad, but certainly not his best.

I would only recommend this CD to a Krush fan who already has most or all of his other works (DO NOT FORGET TO GET 'Cold Krush Cuts'!!!) and wants more - it satisfies this need perfectly, but certainly should not be someones first experience to DJ Krush.

5 out of 5 stars From the master of the wheels of steel...........2007-01-16

A collection of his best works on 2 discs, remixed, touched up...plenty of outstanding hip hop and dnb beats, with jazz, scratches, cuts and breaks sprinkled throughout, reflecting the wide array of Krush's skills and progression as a musical artist. disc 1 has rappers performing on each track, underground performers that aren't pop but loaded with talent, krush using his skills to bring the best from each. disc 2 are his tracks, the stellar diversity showing whatever interests held krush at that time of creation, destroying any myths of typecasting.

the cd case is well designed, almost entirely black, including the cd's. very understated and subtle overall, sending a message of mystery and strength. removing the cd cover, the booklet unfolds to reveal lyrics for all the tracks off disc 1, a nice treat...this item is very difficult to by in store (i went to virgin megastore) so buy online if possible.

5 out of 5 stars Cold Krushin' ; DJ Krush has arived!.......2006-12-28

Underground legend DJ Krush delivers on this self-mixed compilation of some of his finest work. Divided into two perfectly cohesive cd's, this collection gives us a sampling of his stellar career. Whether you are just becomming familiar with Krush, or down since day one, this is a must purchase for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars Unreal.......2006-09-14

I'm a huge Krush fan & this is definitely his best work in years. This album is ridiculous in its atmosphere. I was a bit disappointed with his last couple of albums, but this more than makes up for it...I think it's his best since Kakusei.

If you are a fan at all, pick this up...you're in for a real treat.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I must be missing something.......2007-01-09

Sorry, but this is one of my least favorite DJ Krush albums. It feels like an unfocused, random pile of singles rather than a cohesive album. Which would be fine, assuming all the tracks were great, but they're not. Some, of course, are pretty phenomenal, since it is DJ Krush, after all. The others are subpar mostly due to some questionable guest artists, and there are some uninspired beats in here too. All the rave reviews make we wonder if the reviewers own many other Krush albums, because this one feels diluted in comparison. I'd go with Jaku and Krush's first album before this one. That said, this album still has some high points, and it is DJ Krush, so 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Grooves - a Highly Enjoyable Listen!.......2006-01-15

The 5-star rating might be a little generous, but it's meant to reflect how worthy of purchase I think this CD is overall. I favor the more subdued, relaxing tunes. Some justifiably consider this release to be a bit inconsistent, but I also appreciate its diversity. Whatever you want to label this music - downtempo, acid jazz, hip hop - I don't think it fits easily into any particular category.

DJ Krush is especially effective at creating minimal soundscapes with subtle sophistication. Overall, this CD is laid-back and quite groove-worthy.

A few highlights (some impressions):

"Song 1" - very relaxing, kick-back hip-hop groove, very minimal with jazzy textures including a sweet trumpet.

"Zen Approach" - easy hip-hop funk beat with Black Thought from The Roots in full effect and shimmering background synths. Off the hook, baby!

"Danger of Love" - I'm a big Zap Mama fan and Marie Daulne (who IS Zap Mama) sings exquisitely on this smooth, catchy track. She also contributes some amazingly acrobatic vocals in the background, one of her most notable gifts.

"Sonic Traveler" - Starts off with background noises from a train station combined with subtle African rhythms and instruments before it launches off with a hyperkinetic drum machine. Actually employs bouncing ping pong balls as musical instruments - a fascinating instrumental!

"Vision of Art" - an ominous tone pervades over this spare track featuring an intense, ballsy rap performance.

"Day's End" - another very relaxing instrumental, similar to "Song 1" with a more "end-of-a-quiet-day" feel to it. Features more trumpet, a seductive acoustic guitar and that African instrument that I think is called a kora (?).

"Candle Chant (a Tribute)" - an amazing song, absolutely mesmerizing. Features a bizarre (to my ears) rap in an Asian language (that I assume is Japanese) and a hypnotic, crystalline acoustic guitar.

"Paradise Bird Theory" - has a very mysterious, dark and sensuous trip-hop sound.

Highly recommended, especially for chilling out.

5 out of 5 stars DUCK CHASE.......2005-06-17

We have just spotted the duck with the rabbit ears, via satelite, we believe he is going to Bulgaria. Crawl, thats all the news for now. Gotta go and shave my neck. This has been Zebra Neck, calling straight from the North Pole.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Meditation.......2005-03-28

Although DJ Krush's "Zen" is far ahead of its own time, there is a palpable sense of nostalgia and iconography within the confines of this amazing album. The opening track, simply entitled "Song", is a gorgeously lush combination of subdued hip-hop beats and traditional Asian musicianship, reminding listeners of Krush's own roots dug into Japan. Which is why this album works as a whole. The slight reminders of what came before are knots in the music, they hold it together, giving us a myriad of hypnotic vocals (including N'Dea Davenport, Zap Mama and Black Thought, among others) and tripnotic beats, yet all having something in common. In all, this album is one worth meditating to, whether your eyes are open or not.

4 out of 5 stars pretty damn good.......2004-08-06

5 out of 5 stars Grade A.......2007-06-27

not everyone likes DJ Krush, but I do. This is another one in the series of his beautiful albums.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mix of beats, vocals and instrumentals.......2006-11-10

Another great album from Krush. Jaku and Kakusei are must haves for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars The best, and most refined, album from DJ Krush........2006-06-27

I've been a fan of Krush for years, and own most of his albums. If you are a lover of dark and atmospheric trip hop, then this album is for you. It is strong from start to finish, and incorporates beautiful japanese instruments, brooding beats, and smart lyrics. This is one of those albums that reaffirms your faith in good music.

I think that this album is Krush's most complete work. It surpasses "Zen," and takes the listener on a contemplative journey through towering soundscapes and dark valleys. I don't review many albums, but I believe that "Jaku" is a trip hop masterpiece.

Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece.......2006-04-05

theres so much to say about this album that words can't even describe. honestly, you really have to listen for yourself.
ive been a krush fan since i first heard 'kakusei'. for those of you that have been krush fans since day 1, thats not very impressive. but at the time, i was young, and listened to a lot of hip hop, and kakusei is his most trip-hoppy instrumental hip hop album. just solid beats... but lets focus on 'jaku'.
lets just say it brushes upon every emotion ive ever felt in my life. it starts out dark, and throughout the whole album there is a dark mysterious feeling to it. the mental image i get from the first track is flying high through green mountains, the sky all grey and misty. while listening to it, theres a sence of anticipation, chills that run through your body as if something is about to happen. and something does. especially on track 6. if you have seen the album art, it fits the music perfectly.
there is a feel for almost all genres of music. some hip hop, some jazz piano, some ancient flutes, and rhythm that is almost tribal, but still stays modern enough to be played in clubs.
the first track captures you, and lets you know whats coming ahead in the album, then the rest of the album takes you on a journey to the eastern part of the globe.... and gets lost. when i say this is a masterpiece its because this is krush's latest work (well he actually has two remix albums out now that are amazing as well) but this is his last full length non-remix album he has made, and he has taken his work to the next level. traveled the universe and came back, and then made an album to describe it. after nearly two decades of making music, his experiences throughout his life and where he has traveled come together on this album. As well, you still get a feel that this is the dj krush from japan you have always known. it seemed as though for the production of this album, he sat high on top of a mountain, in a temple, meditated, and understood the world. and jaku is his memoires.
after hearing 'shinsou' or 'the message at depth' (the album that came out previous to this one) i thought there was no way he can follow it up with a better album. but he proved me wrong. this work is far better than any of his other work, can he prove me wrong again?

5 out of 5 stars Chill.......2006-03-29

Was at a friends house drinking and chilling and I heard the Tsugaru Jyamisen for track 13, Beyond Raging Waves. Bought this album for this song but was suprised at how most of the songs were good. I know have about 6 of his albums. Also check out 'Zen' and if you like the sounds of the trumpet, check Ki-Oku for some nice turntable and trumpet sounds.

Pairing DJ Krush, known throughout the beat underground for his subdued, trippy soundscapes, with Japanese avant trumpeter Toshinori Kondo may seem an odd pairing. This record, however, is instantly knowable and intuitively easy to grasp. Krush's beats, while certainly up-front, don't come at the price of the composition, nor do they blast Kondo's trumpet out of the tune. DJ Krush is not only able to drive the direction and tempo, but he's also quite adept at creating mood--often mixing up somber, downtempo collages that glide with an underwater grace. His uptempo work is direct, solidly propelled by someone who knows how to handle bass and breaks. Thankfully, the canvasses Krush mixes up are large enough to include Kondo's color work. The trumpeter (who's worked with the likes of Herbie Hancock and John Zorn) takes full advantage of the opportunity. Kondo is a breathy, richly toned player, and his meshings add to the dreamy, psychedelic feel of the recording. He's effective whether he's drifting beside Krush's swirling dub coiled in a haze of effects or punctuating beats with pure blasts of horn fire. A hip-bop classic. --S. Duda

3 out of 5 stars Jazziz Magazine is right on the money (scroll up).......2007-01-09

The trumpet throughout most of this album is unhelpful enough to make me wish it wasn't there at all on some songs. There are brief moments when Kondo's playing illuminates and enhances Krush's moody, earthy beats, but throughout much of the album the horn playing is uninspired and unfocused enough to become distracting and actually diminish the effect of the beats. In places, it kind of sounds as if Kenny G. wandered into a Tokyo ghetto and couldn't find his way out. Those familiar with Krush's other collaborations with edgier, more bombastic Jazz horns (e.g. Edge of Blue) will recall how well they worked out. The album isn't all bad, though. Krush's signature soundscapes make Ki-Oku a satisfying listen when they're being complimented by Kondo, and still listenable when they're not. Recommended for background music more so than for attentive listening.

5 out of 5 stars great album for relaxation with quality music.......2006-01-29

As a trumpet player, I was looking for an album featuring a trumpet with a jazz/free form style and interesting production and beats. This album is exactly what I was looking for, and I'm hoping to do something in this style myself.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Good Stuff.......2005-07-21

dj krush rarely does much for me as a solo act, but when i noticed he had teamed up with a trumpeter, toshinori kondo, my interest peaked. the collaborators turn out a simple album. dj krush lays down the beats and toshinori kondo plays the trumpet over them. krush and kondo switch between upbeat and slower numbers, most of which don't deviate much from what you would probably expect from krush. on a personal level, i find that the more ambient tracks work better. the beats tend to be more spatial, thus allowing kondo the drivers seat and giving him more room to explore. kondo plays mostly muted melodic notes in a cool jazz fashion, and occasionally he'll play the electronic trumpet - which usually sounds like multiple trumpet parts. the more upbeat tracks have a monotonous beat underneath that just grind my nerves after a while, although they may be a nice spin for you dj folk. for comparison sake, focus somewhere between miles davis 'doo-bop' release and graham haynes 'music for the 21st century.'

5 out of 5 stars One of the most Consistent fusions of Jazz/Trip-Hop.....(Miles Davis would be Proud!!!).......2005-07-05

Dj Krush has been a premier figure in the art of stylished, beat arrangements, for some 12 years now, and he's produced a level of albums that have remained remarkably consistent. veering from hard-edged, hypnotic beats, to Slow cerebral laid-back grooves, as well as ominous and brooding soundscapes, and defining nocturnal and slightly detached tempos. Dj Krush has relatively explored the vast majority of avenues that a DJ/Producer can reasonably expect, encompassing: 'Trip-Hop, Breakbeat, Electronica, Acid-Jazz, Hip-Hop, Ambient'. And he is also remarkable for not only having collaborated with a great many artists, but seemingly able to generally always get the best, out of whomever he decides to collaborate with. Probably one of the more unexpected collaborations, was with celebrated Japanese trumpeter "Toshinori Kondo", who is able to manipulate the trumpet to perform in a sort of lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, that at times is refined, confident and mannered, but then also able to remain inventive with his performances and change the dynamic with a reflective, detached and atmospheric arrangement. Dj's taking Jazz instrumentation and implementing it within the confines of Trip-Hop/Hip-Hop isn't anything new, but instead of making a fairly uptempo Jazz/Hip-Hop record, Krush scales back on the BPM, and produces something far more cerebral and in tune with the relaxed feel, or something like 'Miles Davis'' seminal "Kind of Blue".

What DJ Krush actually contributes himself, is a level of slow burning production, that pays full respect to the trumpeter, providing the programming and beats and more importantly in giving the music a subtly shifting quality, and beautifully coupling the laid-back grooves and low-slung beats with the lushly passionate arrangements, that work perfectly with the tonal and structurally harmonic orchestrated trumpet. Toshinori Kondo himself centres himself perfectly around the widely sensual, atmospheric textures, and languid, mid-tempo break-beats that Krush is able to provide, and rather than remain completely reliant on one form of trumpet, the various tracks across this remarkable album feature him using acoustic and electric trumpet. With some of the tracks that feature electric trumpet owing a sizable influence and debt to Miles Davis's late-period electric albums.

If you've become accustomed to the more uptempo, and breakbeat/Trip-Hop albums, that DJ Krush has become famous for, so long as your aware that no Vocal collaborations with Rappers or singers exists on this record, or that there is nothing here, that largely resembles the blunted, smoked-out beats of other albums, most will find this to be a supremely well-produced and surprisingly soothing album. Think more like an album that has more in common with steamy, soundtrack-type music, with the emphasis on slow beats, scratching, and mellow horns, and intimate grooves layered on top of other grooves. It has the sort of introspective and reminiscing quality of 'Miles Davis's' electric trumpet, fusion of jazz/electronic masterpiece: "In a silent way", but with a heavy emphasis towards beats fused with cool trumpet. Krush fans shouldn't hold back in any hesitation in purchasing this, as it really does fit within the brilliantly consistant run of albums that Krush has produced, and is arguably some of his most melodic and breathtakingly gorgeous work. And such is the elegantly stylish nature of this album, that places a firm emphasis on cerebral intimate harmony, that it has the accessibility & sheer brilliance to grab DJ Krush a whole new set of fans......unquestionably reccommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz for blade runners.......2005-06-18

I'm forever in search of the perfect jazz/electronica hybrid, but 99.99% of the albums that are classified that way are just jive dance music with badly-played trumpets or tablas or some damn thing thrown into the mix. Some of Nils Petter Molvaer's music, particularly an obscure remix CD called "Recoloured," comes close; Erik Truffaz's "The Mask" tried to come close, but was too simple and pallid; but Ki-Oku is THE stuff -- the music that Miles Davis would be playing now if he was still alive and awake. Using trumpets and turntables only, two Japanese guys invent vast, brooding sonic landscapes that sound like what Deckerd of "Blade Runner" would be listening to if he had really good taste in jazz. The first track, "Toh Sui," was obviously at attempt to make a "dance-friendly" opener, but after that, the album dives deep into echoey, lonely spaces that are perfect for 3am stoned listening. I gave a copy to one of the guys who helped create "The Matrix" and he said, "This album makes me hallucinate."

5 out of 5 stars If you like this sort of music...BUY THIS!.......2006-11-10

The first 10 minutes of either CD is enough to 'sell' you on how good this album is. Very dark, serious music, and very well done. I have listened to the CD's dozens of times since I purchased this album (2 CD's) and it is just not getting old.

Not only is it a wonderful value (hi-quality double CD album, total of 125 minutes), but the music is great.

Only downside is SOME of the tracks are a little 'meh', but not in a way that would impact my recommendation of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Cold Krush Cuts...........2004-08-31

Dj Krush is simply the best triphop mixer out there, and this is one of his top 2 mixes... He flawlessley delves into the deepest recesses of the Ninja Tunes catalouge and produces on of the most briliant mixes ever put on CD....

5 out of 5 stars Best best DJ / electronica mix I've ever heard.......2004-07-13

There are a few other reviews so I'll keep this brief: I'm not a big fan of much electronic music, but I do like some DJ type stuff, a little trance, dub, etc. and I have some of Ninja Tune's catalogue, and this is bar none the best collection of its kind I've heard.

Ninja Tune has covered a lot of ground, and DJ Krush and Coldcut give you an excellent overview in these two discs. On disc one, DJ Krush covers the downtempo, abstract jazz and more hip-hop inflected stuff from Ninja Tune. I personally prefer Disc 2 by Coldcut, where they get into some of the more frenetic abstract jazz and jungle that first attracted me to the label.

Whatever side of that argument you fall on, these two DJs seemlessly lead the listener through a musical odyssey that covers significant ground, always stays interesting, and carries you from Point A to a very unpredictable and welcome destination. If you at all like the Ninja catalogue (Amon Tobin, Funki Porcini, etc.) this is can't miss -- easily the best Ninja comp yet.

5 out of 5 stars Tight Mix.......2004-02-25

Very chill. It does what few mix cds manage to do, which is to create something more meaningful than only cool songs that bleed into each other. Any fans of any music should check this out, especially if you like coldcut/ninja tune to begin with.

5 out of 5 stars Cd 1 Superb ( Hip-Hop Breakbeat) / Cd 2 (Downtempo) bliss.......2004-02-14

This 2 Cd mix album has the mixing duties divided up between Disc 1 "Coldcut & DJ Food", remixing the artists of the "Ninja Tune" label, with anything as good as their solo albums....with mixes of tracks by Ninja Tune label-mates "Luke Vibert, Funki Porcini, Up Bustle & Out, DJ Vadim, the Herbaliser and Drome", for a dance-Orientated and eclectic mix, hand picking some of the most recognised tracks from the respected artists. "DJ Krush" on Disc 2 is given the same template to work to, yet he chooses far more laid back and intelligent course for his mixes which is in keeping with Krush's `Blunted' grooves manifesto, which is no quick run through, this stands with his own solo work, and as such is ideally suited for late night listening. And through the use of Stoned grooves, is very Reminiscent of these Kings of the Stoner Album sound "Kruder & Dorfmeister".....because this album captures the best of both world and is designed around either a more upbeat "Dance" cd (Coldcut & DJ Food's Cd) and the more restrained "Downtempo" (DJ Krush) and most surprisingly of all, this album could even appeal to people that aren't usually listeners of Hip-hop/Breakbeat.

    Album Description

2007 release from the abstract Japanese Hip Hop master. Using almost all instrumental parts, Krush progressively introduces his own characteristic beats, and slowly makes the listener forget the all the rules. He uses the most exotic sounds from the label catalogue (E. Aldéa, Narcophony, T. Belhom, Bästard, D Petitgand) and manages to add his own musical style, creating something very different but still very DJKrush. 13 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning - and only the beginning........2007-01-06

Often an artists debut album will be wonderful - as this one is - but subsequent albums get progressively worse. This is not the case with DJ Krush. His first album (this one) is great, as is everything else he has released since.

About this album - like most of his work, there are some dark and heavy (dare I say depressing) beats with elements of jazz, rap, ambient, etc. mixed in. It is all orchestrated in a manner only a master musician like Krush could pull off, and the results are stunning.

Only thing I don't like is that the play time is 48 minutes - but who cares, it is 48 minutes of perfection, and there are well over a dozen more hours to be had on his other CD's. If you like this, hopefully love it, you MUST buy his other stuff - it is all excellent.

A final note - this album was released in May of 1995, almost 12 years ago as of this review. It sounds like it was just released, it is aging well.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Driving Music..........2006-11-17

Whether you're driving, lounging, or just looking for some more great music, this is where you should be looking. His production is creative and inspiring. Everytime I play it, I just zone out and get in this meditative-like state. It makes you wanna jump on the 1 and 2's yourself and just start creating. Anyway, brilliantly done all the way through. A+

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like Krush.......2006-08-25

DJ Krush's album "Krush" offers you a mix of classic smooth Hip-Hop, jazz, and electronic all rolled into one. He has a similar sound to DJ Shadow, but he manages to keep all of his work genuine and uniquely DJ Krush. To get a good idea of what's in store, check out some of the tags for the songs while reading the reviews (however these don't do justice). If you're a fan of Shadow, then I'm sure you be into Krush and his sound.

    5 out of 5 stars HOT SHIT.......2006-02-28

This is a great album, from song 1 to the last note.

4 out of 5 stars Dark and Compelling.......2005-09-08

Very austere, very beautiful in it's unique way. To my mind, an excellent soundtrack to a rainy 3AM in the big city. If you've been overloaded with the too-slick and the overproduced, get this CD: a breath of super-cool fresh air.

5 out of 5 stars For turntablelist, with a nod to hip-hop............2004-08-24

This cd represents what I like best about DJ Krushes work. When he wants to he can be as creative as any dj, but he needs the backing of equally talented people who can hold up their end. On this cd he has plenty of company with home grown and American talent as well Esthero from Canada. I will say this is a cd for turntable oriented listeners, and those who can listen to intramentals without your attention wandering.

    3 out of 5 stars Zzzzzzz.......2003-09-11

Am I the only person who finds this album incredibly boring?! Very average trip hop. Yawn.

5 out of 5 stars Tokyo Vibe Through and Through.......2003-04-02

Firstly I would like to say I am not obsessed by the fact that Krush is from Tokyo but this CD really does for me create the Tokyo vibe (I have been living there for the last 6 months). For example "Delta Forest" perfectly sums up a feeling of the Asakusa region of Tokyo.
Anyway not to get bogged down this album will definitely not suit all tastes. The beats are reasonably abstract and some of the tracks are very dark. This is not as trip hoppy as some of his earlier stuff. This album is also much more experimental than some of his other works (not to say that makes his other albums bad- far from it). There are some tracks however which let the listner breathe and relax such as the superb 2 minute long "Interlude" (another track that really captures an essence of Japan, allbeit a difficult to find one) and the only vocal track on the album "Final Home" showcasing the soothing tones of Canadian (i think) singer Esther. Also on the break down listen out for an extremely impressive scratching session from Krush. I was speechless when I first heard that scratch. Phenomonal.
This album like I said is not for everyone but if you like a little more originality to your music and you can appreciate the workings of abstract beats then this is far and away the best album I have heard to that description.

DJs like Krush don't make it easy for MCs to keep rap music primarily a tapestry for vocalists, as it's often perceived. DJ Krush doesn't write lyrics, he doesn't rap, he doesn't even understand English. But this renowned Japanese turntable maestro creates richly detailed and expansive tracks that, vocal or not, ooze hip-hop.

Perhaps to gel with American notions of what constitutes hip-hop, Meiso, his third album, features guest appearances by well-known rappers like C.L. Smooth, Guru, and the Roots on four of the album's fourteen, otherwise instrumental cuts. Though the MCs perform admirably and provide welcome human contact, the raps seem mostly like an afterthought, even a hindrance to the music's ebb and flow. There's never any doubt the star of Meiso is Krush, who imbues his electronic collages with mystical soul. --Roni Sarig

2 out of 5 stars there's a fine line between subtle and dull.......2007-02-16

I hate to rain on this parade, because Krush is a talented dude and I was really excited when I got this album. And it does have a few moments. "Only the Strong Survive" is a chill number. "Duality" with DJ Shadow is amazing, but the amazing part is mostly the second half, which sounds a lot more like Shadow than like Krush.

A lot of the rest of the album is, literally, beats. The paths are literally drumloops for 45 seconds or so, reminiscent of one of those demo records that DJs mine for breaks, samples, and general turntablism madness. Whereas other records by DJs that I have (I'll mention Shadow again) are able to take bits and pieces of samples and craft emotional masterpieces, this one is just soulful grooves with sparse, denuded arrangements. There's just not that much there.

So if you get this record, get it on vinyl, where it may come to more use. There is no point to having this on CD.

4 out of 5 stars Music for Cave Dwellers.......2007-02-03

This album is probably in my top 5 downtempo joints of all-time. It's murky, dusty, and mystical grooves set a very distinct introspective groove. Maybe a TAD repetitive, thus i'll give it 4 stars instead of 5, but certainly a must-own for any downtempo/underground hip-hop head. The title track with Black Thought and Malik B is worth the price of admission by itself. Some of the fiercest, dream-tinged lyrics I've heard from the Roots Crew. Cop this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great stuff, but not quite his best........2007-01-23

This CD is a mix between ambient/music-only tracks and rap/hip-hop - and it all sounds good, or is at least interesting. The beats are good, the lyrics are as well, but it is just lacking something that some of his other CD's have - dare I say this album sounds a bit mainstream and generic (in comparison to his other works).

No matter - compared to the piles of trash released in the music world, this album deserves your listen and is a mandatory part of a Krush collection. If you are more a fan or rap or hip-hop, you will definitely like many of the tracks here, and even if you are not a fan of this sort of music, it is done very well and there is a variety of sounds to enjoy.

Not DJ Krush's best, but compared to whats out there, it is great. I gave it 4 stars because some of his other works are better. Buy without hesitation.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully subtle.......2006-12-08

DJ Krush is a master of the super downtempo, where all the action takes place in a murky area beneath the beats. The majority of this album is chill beats over quiet instrumental samples. Some of this CD is rap - good bare homegrown-style rap. At first it seems to interrupt the theme, but then you get it and it flows great as an album. You can't listen to half these tracks in the car, because the road will drown out all the good stuff, but that's a small price to pay for great music.
The best tracks to check out are "what's behind darkness?", "most wanted man," "bypath 3" and "duality," which I consider an epic masterpiece. If you like this type of music, also check out DJ Cam's album Mad Blunted Jazz, Coldcut's Back in the Bass, and DJ Vadim's stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Dark vibes and ill rhymes.......2006-06-08

This was my introduction to DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Mo Wax, intrumental hip-hop and electronica all wrapped up into one. Meiso is a beautifuly dark LP that blurs generes as it paints from beginning to end. The kind of album you listen to late at night with the lights dim... a soundtrack... a soundtrack for the insomniac's soul.

Despite hearing DJ Shadow's work on Blackalicious' Melodica EP, this was the 1st time I heard his work as an instrumentalist. His portion on "Duality" by far outshined Krush and gave me a small taste into what his potential was.

Blessed with guests such as The Roots, Big Shug, Guru and C.L. Smooth, Krush's production wove a tapestry of smokey beats and ill vibes.

This LP is my favorite of Krush's 1st three LPs, which I'd say are his best works to date. This is music for insomniacs, so don't sleep!!!

After the gentle turns of 2001's rich and melodious Zen, DJ Krush's The Message at the Depth banks a hard corner, layering political dissent and antiwar sentiments with jumbled beats and harsh electronic scrambles. Again making expert use of guest vocalists, artists like Anti-Pop Consortium and Anticon give literal expression to Krush's dark waxwork, turning "Supreme Team" and "Song for John Walker" into overt political statements. Throughout, Krush explores a deeply pissed-off vibe, coming up for air only on the bittersweet "Alrpheua (Truthspeaking)" featuring Angelina Esparza. He finds a little peace by the end of the record, lifting the veil on playful dub rhythms for "The Lost Voices" featuring Sly & Robbie and "What About Tomorrow" featuring Abijah. In a chaotic world, Krush's eloquent anger is soothing, even when his malevolent turntables smack us in the face. --Matthew Cooke

    Album Description

2003 DJ Krush album is edgier than his last record Zen, with harder and deeper beats. A concept record with Krush reacting to 9/11 and interpreting a post 9/11 world. Guests this time include Anti-Pop Consortium, Sly & Robbie, Anticon, Angelica Esparsa and more. Red Ink label/Sony.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Lazy Production.......2006-12-16

Dj Krush is great, anticon is great, but this album is just boring. Every song sounds pretty much the same, the vocal tracks by the members of anticon are drowned out and the song done with Angelina Esparza, is less than so-so. It sounds like Dj Krush was given 10 sounds and was told to make an album using only those 10 sounds and 1 tempo. Again, I would reccomend any other Dj Krush album, and suggest that you check out anticon if you haven't already because they are splendid, but this album was weak.

5 out of 5 stars Redefining the Hip in hip hop.......2004-07-12

1999's KI-OKU proved DJ Krush's musical sophistication had far more substance than the pack of acid jazz and chill out posers who were grabbing the cash and disappearing with the next flavor-of-the-month product.

"Message at the Depth" combines that musical inspiration with a burning message.

If you liked the jazz tinged tracks on KI-OKU, "The Lost Voices" (with Sly and Robbie doing a lot more than just getting name checked) and "But the World Moves On" satisfy the promise of that earlier work. "Trihedron" makes d'n'b sound as fresh as if it hadn't happened yet. The hard electronica elements on this CD give it a solid edge that holds up under repeat listens. Add articulate lyrics that aspire to inspire to something more than a party - "Alehevo(truthspeaking)" achieves that all too rare miracle of speaking hard truth without preaching - and you have a CD that holds up to repeat play like few recent releases are capable of.

Subtle, sophisticated, hard edged, powerful, and recommended.

DJ Shadow may get the press, but DJ Krush is creating a body of work that can outlast the fads.

5 out of 5 stars the best album ive heard in a while.......2004-03-11

DJ KRUSH rules out in this wonderful compilation. The beats sinks the listener in a special and dark atmosphere. If you like Dj Shadow you will enjoy Krush.

    4 out of 5 stars angelina.......2003-11-26

Most of the album is o.k...but what stands out is Angelina's voice on "Alepheva". Angelina is a new vocalist, born and raised in Okinawa Japan. It's good to see how far she has come, especially from a tiny island in the Pacific. Her voice has matured wonderfully. Great job!
