"That was the grooviest!".......2007-05-18

One of the finest discs of American gutbucket rock and roll ever assembled, the first volume of the Back From the Grave series is a monstrously fun collection of obscure 60s garage punk. Everything about the set embodies the greasy, bloody-minded, and joyous spirit of classic r'n'r. The songs are raucous, raw, and rabid, dripping with teenage insanity and pulse-pounding passion. Just listen to those songs: "My Confusion" comes roaring out of the gate sounding like the great lost Rolling Stones single, rattling along on a whirlwind guitar line and some double-time drums. The Jujus' "Do You Understand Me" keeps up the pace, stomping along with a slinky main melody, some wonderfully snarled vocals, and what may very well be the coolest instrumental break in human history (which features an actual motorcycle being driven through the studio!). Other gems include The Lyrics' "They Can't Hurt Me," which exemplifies adolescent rage, positively brimming with lyrical bitterness and sneering vocals. It's also catchy as hell. There's also "That's the Bag I'm In," the Fabs' superb reworking of a folk tune (originally by Fred Niel). The version found here is a tense, pounding, fuzz-guitar-driven hard luck anthem, with a shout-along chorus. The explosiuve "Surfside Date," the acid-drenched "We All Love Peanut Butter," and The Banshees' frat-rock slopfest "They Prefer Blondes" are also fantastic. Which is to say nothing of brillaint bursts of absolute insanity such as "The Crusher," "Jack the Ripper," and "Scream." Best of all, there's "Rats Revenge," which the spot-on liner notes refer to as a "U.R.G.B. (Utterly Genius Ridiculous Blast)!" It's a work of idiotic brilliance, an absolutely over-the-top raver that transforms a "Louie Louie" chord progression into Bach (and vice versa). And there's so much more great music on this set than the songs I've mentioned. Basically, this is a full disc of wall-to-wall great music, an endless party that simply demands volume. Buy it, play it, and thank your lucky stars that someone thought to release it. Long live rock!

Great first wave punk rock.......2006-05-03

Great music to cruise around in your vintage car to. The first half of the CD is great.The "Rats Revenge part 1 and 2" are the most retarded songs I've ever heard but thats what makes them great! Larry and the Blue Notes doing the "Night of the Phantom" will make you check your back when you make out with a hot kitten in the back of your car at inspiration point. Triumphs rip in to surf punk romp "Surfside Date" that will kick any of these vans wearing, blonde tipped suburbian punk whiners in their pampered butts! Then your on to two of my favorites on the CD the first being "Scream", a massacre take-off on the then popular song "Shout" and it sounds so much better. It sounds as if when they recorded this song they were murdering someone, very unnerving. Then the awesome Novas do the song "The Crusher" I'm speechless to describe what a artistic masterpiece this is. The grunty screamy vocals,and the slow sludge of the guitars makes this CD worth buying after that it kind of goes downhill for me. It gets a little monotonous on the second half. However the first half redeems the CD completely. This is a must for people who like dirt in their music.

This is as pure as rock n' roll gets!!.......2006-04-27

Sometimes we seem to forget that the heart of rock n' roll is horny teenagers making loud, obnoxious noises in the garage just because, dammit, it FEELS GOOD. It's definitely an aquired taste, but this series is a great reminder of what rock n' roll was originally meant to be. Out of time, out of tune, but a hell of a lot of fun. It's worth it for the One Way Streets insane mutilation of Jack the Ripper alone. And anybody who can't listen to Rats Revenge parts I and II and not grin like an idiot is dead. This might not be the beginnings of punk rock, but punk wouldn't have happened without stuff like this. Definitely recommended if you want to know where it all really started.

Rat's Revenge.......2006-02-08

I honestly feel sorry for anyone who doesn't "get" this music. It's about creating instead of consuming, it's about taking a shot against the odds, but mostly it's about having fun.

A couple tracks stand out for me. The JuJu's - definitely a one take wonder. You have a motorcycle revving, a bottle breaking, and a totally trip atonal guitar riff. This makes the Sex Pistols sound like over produced dinosaur rock.

But my favorite is Rat's Revenge pts. 1 & 2. I can't think of any song I ever heard that sounds like the were having so much fun making it. The world would be a better place if we still had the Rats instead of the Rolling Stones...

Great garage rock comp.......2005-01-17

Like many garage-philes have stated, this is the next logical step in the history of garage rock, right after the enormously influential "Nuggets" and "Pebbles" compilations. Unlike some other comps of the sort, Crypt is only interested in bringing out the best of 60s garage rock 'n' roll. This is a perfect testament to why some people considor this to be the original punk rock. I wouldn't go that far, but it certainly influenced it a good deal. While some songs on this album are better than others, there are no really unbearable tracks. "Surfside Date", the cover of "Psycho", and espescially "Sticks and Stones" show why this music was so appealing to the teens of the day.

More rockin' obscurity from the mid 60s.......2007-06-30

The second volume of the Back From the Grave series isn't as mind-bendingly awesome as the first, but it still offers up enough grease-coated garagey goodness to make it a superb listen for any fan of good ol' fashioned rock 'n' roll. Sure, there's nothing here to match the power of "They Can't Hurt Me" or "Rats' Revenge" (from the first volume), but there are still plenty of earth-quaking rockers aboard: The Botumless Pit's "13 Stories High" is a fire-breathing raver with a breathless vocal, and the Jaguars' "It's Gonna Be Alright" is a low-key R&B grinder. Jerry & The Others go for the jugular on "Don't Cry To Me," a firestorm of drums, guitars, and snotty vocals. The Keggs serve up the ridiculously sloppy "To Find Out," while the Sloths sound utterly primal on "Makin' Love." There's also the Fugitives' "You Can't Blame That on Me," a roaring three chord rocker, while the Humans' sound meaner than mean on the leering "Warning." The Huns are responsible for the awesome "Shakedown," which simmers with barely understated rage. After a while, the collection does begin to sound a bit samey- it's hard to keep up this kind of excitement for 30 songs. Still, the dis is incredibly entertaining, and at times it threatens to rock harder than anything you've ever heard. Enjoy!

Better than the first volume.......2005-06-30

The first volume was great, but this is oddly enough even better, making the series the best there is for raw and primal garage punk. Once again Crypt compiles the best should've-been-a-hit-wonders from their obviously massive library. Unlike many other similar compilations, Crypt doesn't merely throw a bunch of songs together and put it on the market. They seem to go through their collection, and pick only the best garage rock pounders. For bands that were, well, ameteur teens releasing sole 45s on indie labels, they are incredibly catchy. It's a lot better than that "I Got You Babe" dreck that was scaling the charts at the time. Honestly, "You Can't Blame That on Me" and "Wild Man" should've been freaking anthems! Makes me wish rock 'n' roll was as fun as it used to be, kudos to Tim Warren and the other garage-philes on Crypt Records for bringing us only the best.

The Classics.......2004-12-10

Well, I'm giving this album 5 stars because my dad is on it! Check out "Warning" by The Humans. That's my Dad rockin' out on the drums! Who ever said Albion, New York isn't on the map?

Much Better THan Volume 1.......2002-12-17

I bought both Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the BFTG series as the next logical step in the garage-punk path that starts with the "Nuggets" collection. I find that Volume 2, top to bottom, has much better music than Volume 1--it actually has a number of tunes that could have been legitimate hits given the right kind of promotion, which one can't really say about Volume 1 (with the sole exception of The Lyrics' "They Can't Hurt Me"). Not that accessibility or mass appeal wholly determines musical merit--especially when it comes to mid-60s garage-punk--but, suffice it to say, a catchy riff and a modicum of musical ability help a lot. My favorite cuts on Volume 2 are The Humans' "Warning" and Jerry & The Others' "Don't Cry to Me."

Garage-rockin' madness!!!.......2007-06-16

As far as garage-punk goes, Crypt Records' Back From the Grave series has been one of the most consistantly rockin' collections of raw mid-60s music ever assembled. This is the fourth CD volume in the series, an insanely awesome compendium of garage-rock crash 'n' bashers from all over the country. The songs are pure deranged teenage rage: The Mustangs' "That's For Sure" opens the proceedings with a storming organ attack and some snarled vocals. The Tyme povide a brutal, earth-shaking rendition of "Land of 1000 Dances," and the Noblemen's "Short Time" is a sneering, leering pounder with a nasty fuzz guitar. The Snails' "Snails Love Theme" is a weird and wonderful raver with some greasy vocals and a droning main melody. The Retreds' "Black Mona Lisa" is a groovy, violent blues rocker with a brutal, back-to-basics rhythm. Half-Pint & The Fifths "Orphan Boy" is a drawling screamer with a catchy chorus. The disc also includes two tracks from the Spiders, who would later become Alice Cooper (!). Both songs are rough, ragged, and loose, completely absent of Coop's stiff hard-rock leanings. The Travel Agency's "Jailbait" is every bit as wonderfully sleazy as its title, and the Moguls' "Ski Bumb" is an attitude-drenched stomper with a somewhat hilarious concept. The Bel-Aires "Ya Ha Be Be" is an incredibly catchy organ-driven tune with some great vocals and some churning guitars. Beep Beep & the Roadrunners' "True Love Knows" combines raw rock with a certain haunting wistfulness. The disc also features Larry & The Blue Notes' "Night of the Sadist," which is a rougher, earlier, meaner version of their "Night of the Phantom," which was a highlight of Back from the Grave, Vol. 1. The afformentioned songs are only a few of the highlights that can found on this superb album- this disc contains no less than thirty songs of raw, gritty rock n roll insanity. Get it if ya know what's good for you!

this cd has some really great garage. one thing i would like to mention, is that 60s punk is full of awesome organ parts.
modern keyboards just dont have it going for them.
so if you want to here some great music get this now!

Best In The Series.......2004-04-05

When it comes to the vinyl, these records were releaed in (apparenty) whatever order Tim Warren came across them. Now on CD, he's spread the goodies around a little more evenly -- and this CD gets at least it's fair share. "I've Got Somthing To Say," "Night of the Sadist," and "Orphan Boy" are obvious winners, and the proto-Alice Cooper Band "Don't Blow Your Mind" will make you shake your head in disbelief the next time you see him sweating eyeliner at a charity golf tourney.

Basically, if you're into this kinda music you've already got this CD. And if you're just gettin into it, well -- get it. No jangly crap, no wanna-be Beatles, just angry, beer-fueled rawk-n-roll. And you can't beat that.

Love the Garage LPs.......2003-03-16

If you love garage music, get all of the Back from the Grave LP's or CDs!! These are the best. Hundreds of other decent garage/punk albums out there, but I believe the Grave series sets the standard.

Messrs Rawlston, are you aware there's another Beep Beep tune out there on a record (or CD) called Strummin' Mental? FWIW True love Knows is one of my two very favorite songs in the entire Grave series.

Why does Grave even bother anymore ?.......2006-06-27

This 2 CD release had potential, but the album goes no where. Grave have not released a good CD since Soulless, and I find that album a little too tame for what Grave once was. The only good part about this release, is the 2nd bonus disc containing their early Demos. Put simply, the demo disc is the only reason to buy this release.

Grave's new album As Rapture Comes will be out later this year (2006). From what Ive heard of the album (which is the entire album), its not anything to rave about either.

REVISION: I must admit that while Grave's recent studio works are not my taste, their live shows are damn good. Support death metal.

Get me a pillow.......2005-08-07

This CD is straightforward bore-core. I was so bored while listening to this CD the first time that I just had to change the CD, and pop in some Desultory (...). Old school metal is the best, but Grave's style is definately... horrible. I don't know why the hell I even bought this CD, and by the way, has anybody but me noticed that this CD lacks bass? It sounds as if the bass player's track just got left behind and out of this recording in general... not a sign of a good CD.
I'm a huge fan of swedish metal, but these guys just plain old suck. I have to tell you, the bonus CD that came with this worthless piece of plastic was better than the CD I bought. It has way much more music on it, it's raw, and it's actually creative.
I strongly suggest that you don't buy this CD. But if you can, try to just find the bonus CD somewhere (off a friend, ebay, anywhere) and listen to that instead. It's far better than the other one...

Just kick-your-ass death metal man... nothing fancy. If you're looking for something that blends 5 different genres in 15-minute epics or anything of the like, you've come to the wrong place... you're better off sticking to Opeth and other such things. If you like any of the old school death metal or things off the Century Media label such as Into Eternity, Vital Remains, Dark Tranquility, Divine Empire... you should love this. Just heavy heavy music that you won't be able to stop banging your head to. Every riff will kick your ass harder and harder.

Amazing.......2003-06-23

I went and saw Grave live with Immolation... amazing show. They played much off this new album, and it all blended perfectly with their old stuff. Old Grave fans WILL NOT be disappointed with this one... I wasn't. Buy it NOW. \m/

CRYPT knows how to do it! .......2007-04-27

I own volumes 1 and 2 (both outstanding)and I'm ecstatic I bought Vol.3! This CD is wild, quirky, teen rock created in the "garages" of America circa '63-67. I'm fascinated that these songs were even in existence when mainstream pop ruled the AM airwaves. The bands on this CD play rock for primal outlet, cathartic screamings,hell bent energy,and FUN! Check out The Keggs (Track 9) -- they sound almost out of tune and then the song comes together in what is one of my favorite tracks (they were big fans of The Kinks). I plan to buy all of Crypts'"BACK FROM THE GRAVE" recordings as long as they keep putting them out. These "Back From The Grave" collections are a fun, well put together look into an important part of American rock history. Even the liner notes on all of CRYPT'S CDs are insightful, honest, and a laugh riot.

Underbelly of Sixties Rock.......2004-03-21

This is a charming collection of obscure garage rock recordings from the sixties, providing 29 tracks and 71 minutes of raw teenage rock. The CD includes an informative booklet with pics of the artists and information on each of the tracks.

Stormy by The Jesters Of Newport is a wild California crunch rocker with lovely organ, recorded in a backroom studio of a record store in Santa Clara. Livin' by The Henchman from Detroit is a lively little guitarfest, whilst Close That Door by The Tigermen has catchy hooks, cute harmonies and wild screams. The Aztex with The Little Streets Of My Town bring some folk rock to the proceedings - it's a fast number with jangling guitars and beautiful vocals.

The Kid From Cinncy by The Hatfields is closer to pop though still fast and punky. Something Else by The Nobles is more subdued in the vocals but has deliciously explosive guitar breaks. The Shames contribute My World Is Upside Down and The Special One; theirs is a passionate flowing rock sound with strong lead vocal. The Keggs who contribute the track Girl, were obviously influenced by The Kinks, but the song is pleasant enough with great guitar touches.

She Was Mine by The Beaux Jens start out as gentle pop but explodes into full rock glory midway through, a complex number with frequent tempo changes and passionate screams. Varsity Club Song by The Golden Catalinas is pure acid rock or an early manifestation of grunge, two decades ahead of time.

Most of these tracks are short sharp numbers high on enthusiasm but not always strong on melody. Another way of looking at this music, is as Punk without the anger. The album certainly shows the underbelly of the Sixties in all its lively glory!

I've had volumes 3, 4, and 5 on vinyl since they came out . . .had no idea they were on CD as well. These garage monsters are guaranteed to blow the roof off the dump. The vinyl tracks were so good, I can only imagine what all the extra tracks on the CD sound like! If you like garage / punk / anything with energy and fun, grab this collection and regret that none of them ever made it big!

If your into garage rock this is the disc 3 is fun.the track beuax jens-she was mine,is great.This is some really rare stuff from the 60s. the song from the aztex-the little streets in my town is a amazing song, and only 100 where pressed in the 60s.This comp gets 100 miles from the mainstream of 60s music today.The inside has 24 pages of pictures, most bands are wearing suits and ties,not to many into the slopppy hippy thing.So if your into to todays deppresing sounds dont buy this.But if your into music from a more adventures time get this.Like song livin from track 3 of disc,have and have a good time!

as far as garge rock goes, this is sweet crypt knowns how to make immpresive collections of garge punk for sure...
i just got the doulble lp 36s cuts. well worth it.
i really like all the bands. the band that killed me was the merlynn tree. also i loved the elite u.f.o, there song kicked butt.
let me tell you this you cant find any thing out there like vol.8.

Punk Rock: 1977? 1992?...Gimme a break! these 'garage punk unknowns'of 1965-6 america laid the founding stones....(to waste!) Though every volume of BFTG is rippin', seems this one has slightly better sound (more dynamic bass and cleaner transfer)...(prolly cuz Crypt kingpin T.Warren's success had a little more spending cash for better copies of the old 45's..?...pure speculation!) Anyway, this compilation smokes; start to finish.
