Early Prince.......2007-05-26
Very interesting stuff to hear if you want to get a ear glimpse of what was to become. (Prince fans can tell its him too)
Real Prince Fans Know.......2005-10-03
If you're a real Prince fan, you know all about 94 East. This was one of his first bands with childhood best friend Andre Cymone. Lovin Cup is a classic! No, most of their music are without lyrics, but Prince fans know that's how he started. This is for the authentic fans only-I have one of the originals, but glad to see this re-mastered and re-issued. Priceless!!

Product Description
The following is the story of how the recordings on the 2-CD set, 94 East featuring Prince; Symbolic Beginning came into existence. When you play these recordings listen very carefully. You don't know what we went through to get these tapes and we don't want you to miss a thing. What you have in your possession is a collector's dream. These songs are very special because they feature the performances of Prince when he was just 16 years old. The songs which are referred to as the Cookhouse Five are Better Than you Think, I'll Always Love You, If We Don't, If You See Me, and Games. The name "Cookhouse" refers to Cookhouse Recording Studios where these recordings took place. The performances in these songs mark the very first time Prince was ever in a recording studio and the beginning of Prince's illustrious recording career. These recordings are a must for all Prince fans. Six of the songs on this album were first released in 1986 on the Minneapolis Genius/94 East: The Historic Recordings album featuring Prince, Pepé Willie, and André Cymone. The album was produced by Pepé Willie and Tony Sylvestre (a popular producer in the music industry and member of the group, Main Ingredient). The album included four songs written by Pepé (Games, Dance to the Music of the World, Lovin' Cup, If You Feel Like Dancin'), one song written by Tony Sylvestre (One Man Jam) and one a collaboration between Pepé and Prince (Just Another Sucker). These six songs were taken from the original recordings, updated with additional instrumental parts and remixed. We refer to this collection as Minneapolis Genius I: The Historic Recordings. They were actually recorded after the Cookhouse Five songs.

Don't expect a true PRINCE cd.......2005-10-05
Before you buy this read around there is a web site about this cd. This is a group that Prince was in when he was 16 years old. Don't expect an unrealeased cd of music before "For You". He is basicly playing guitar, bass and doing some vocals which you can clearly hear. Some songs sound a little dated but they were written and recored a while ago but they are not bad at all. The liner notes tell you what songs he is playing on and what he is playing, and even the ones they dont list him on I think I still hear him singing on. Even though when you hear him play you have to be amazed at his talent at 16. This is more something for a real Prince fan/collector.

Sixteen!.......2004-11-22
Besides just being a novelty to hear Prince at age 16, the cds are great quality recordings and bumping. "Just Another Sucker" is on par with songs like Uptown, with Prince's falsetto and a great groove and some simple but driving guitars. Both cds are great. Recorded mostly in 1974-1977, they're apparently "the first time Prince was in a recording studio." They're more than listenable and the quality of the recordings is great. There's also a practice recording, which is very low budget, but has a charm to it. Some instrumentals have Prince going at it on the guitar with a sort of discoey synth groove.

Different Sound - Excellent.......2007-02-04
This is not typical Prince but it is a very good sound. It is not a rock quality but rather a R&B sound. It is different for Prince but I really liked it.
A Waste of Money.......2001-04-13
I had to choose 1 star, but it gets ZERO STARS. This was not what I anticipated at all. Do not waste money on this one. To me, it has nothing to do with Prince at all.
Get the original.......2001-03-23
This album is a good, but dated album. I do, however, suggest that instead of this one you pick up Minneapolis Genius(Pepe Wille, Andre Cymone, and Prince). It is comprised of this album[94 east] plus "Just Another Sucker" and more. This is a ripoff unless you can't find Minneapolis Genius and want to make your collection as comprehensive as you can at the moment.
Beginning fun tidbits of Prince.......2000-08-19
This is a very early Prince record and shouldn't be judged in comparison with something like "Purple Rain" or even his first album "For You". This is Prince on a roll with a group named 94 East. The songs aren't actually songs rather than exercises with dance music in new fun ways. It's a little bit of whatever you had in mind, funk/dance wise. A whole lot of fun can be found the first two tracks like the synthesizer excess of "One Man Jam" and the R&B club sound of "Dance To The Music Of The World". Jazzy Hip-Hop sways on "Games". You get into the rocky/disco feel of "If You Feel Like Dancin'" quite easily. The funky experiments at the end aren't as capturing as the beginnings. "If You See Me" is Isaac Hayes like funk on a roll with pretty strong vocals (not Prince though). An iffy slow jam is found in "Better Than You Think", but again it's not Prince's voice heard here. In fact, expect for the few strums here and there, I don't feel him on this rather ordinary song. Not near the rank of a Prince album, but for a little funky fun you might want to check it out.
Average.......2000-05-02
I got the Original Album in 85&it was cool at the time.but hasn't dated all that well.still it's cool hearing Prince,&Andre Cymone Playing together early on.Some of the Bass Parts&Keyboard Parts would show up on Prince's Early Albums.this is Mainly For COllectors or Fans not Essential.

Prince's VERY first recordings!.......2004-12-24
Anyone who claims to be a Prince fan will have this album. I've yet to meet anyone who has it though. I've made it known to all of you prince fans by listing it on my must have cd's @cdnow.com. Most don't have it because they never knew it existed. Supposedly these jams were a high school demo. There is also an Import version available and I'll list as well . The most lasting gift you can give someone is the gift of music and this is my gift to all of you Prince fans!!! enjoy!

Watered-down 70s soul music, but not a Prince album.......2002-12-18
I wish sombody had explained this to me bofore I bought this album: 94 East is NOT the lost Prince album. 94 East was a Minneapolis band in the 70s. Prince, 16 years old at the time, played guitar with them. But Prince's current style of guitar-playing, recognizable to any Prince fan, is not heard on this album. Furthermore, Prince is not the lead singer (though he might do backing vocals?), nor is he even the main songwriter (he co-write one song on the entire "album"). You wouldn't know Prince played on this album at all (doesn't sound like a Prince album, and no liner notes to explain what his contribution was) except that there's a misleading picture of him on the cover.
Now, with that said, the album isn't bad if you're into lite 70s soul music, minus any hint of funk. This album IS listenable. But if you want lost Prince recordings, don't waste your money - you will be disappointed.
I Truly Know Why Prince Went On His Own.......2002-02-06
Somebody was trying to make some money off of Prince's name when they decided to release this CD. Yeah, it's Prince - but it's not the Prince we all know and love. It is understandable why this wasn't released at the time it was recorded. I doubt if Prince had any involvement with the official release of these recordings anyway.
